I must admit I find this concept rather intriguing. It would be interesting to see a compilation of some of the films, although that might contradict the original intent. Still, I'm sure there are some great ideas and ingenious creativity floating around there - not to mention a few cetifiable lunatics.

And hey, if it helps to "wean people off of Hollywood movies, and the marketing apparatus that drives it," that can't be a bad thing.

so besides dropping $12.95...

is there anyway to get the protocol? or at least a summation of it? I'd love to give it a try, but I already have 5 DV cameras, so I won't be contacting him. I just want to know what to do!
also, is his website not up yet?

just one picture so far, and no links? I take it he isn't ready to hear from 10,000 dopes trying to get a free DV camera...
Maybe He'll Print The Protocol?

I guess you could just wander into a Barnes & Noble and read it. Only seventy-nine pages, and the rules comprise maybe three or four of those.

Nor have I ever watched a amateur movie on youtube that could compete with even a shitty Hollywood movie. If the Gondry Protocol is designed to uplift people -- fine -- but, if it's designed to compete with "real" movies then it will fail miserably.

The man seems to have been moving toward this for a long time. His video DVD...

...has a superb documentary, during which he is constantly creating things, doodling, animating, building. He never stops creating. He obviously wants to spread the happiness he gets from the creative process , and Block Party, Science of Sleep (despite its warning note finale), and Be Kind Rewind have been building to that. The Greatest Frenchman of All Time, obviously.

The BE KIND REWIND PROTOCOL is...

...turning off this artsy fartsy piece of shit after the first 5 minutes. Terrible movie. Even worse...that pretentious piece of shit known as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. lame, lame, lame.

Actually this sounds quite inspiring. It would be helpful, though, if the protocol advised people NOT to use the Steve Jablonsky soundtrack music they're so in love with and to stay away from those ugly video editing software titles (I've been forced to look at creations that made both things their primary style trademark and I'm scarred for the rest of my life.) I guess, though, that Gondry recommends in his books to do almost everything yourself. Can't wait to to read it myself.
I like the guys music videos...BUT..his features stink

Eternal Sunshine was self indulgent wank and Be Kind Rewind was just embarrassingly try-hard earnest and terribly executed...i barely made it to the predictable end..

I like how there's nothing to really be negative about here, so the talkbackers are making stuff up "If this is meant to compete with real movies..." Yeah, it's meant to compete with real movies, like Gondry said over and over in the interview it WASN'T.
Can't compete, eh?

It's amazing how in such a short period YouTube et al have altered the notion and perceived importance of physical presence in a film community, even in the face of the internet's having done the same in a more general sense. I never thought an original concept like Gondry's, even though it is kind of silly (maybe that's one of its strengths), would be derided simply because you can't post it on the internet for strangers to ogle while they eat a bowl of cereal or something. Not that there's anything inherently wrong in that, either, but I guess sometimes if you can't do it from your computer desk, people think it isn't worth doing at all. That's an encouraging thought. Nice interview, Beaks.

That anyone is being negative about this proves that the internet is about a dozen people trying to accomplish something, and five billion chanting "FAIL!"
