And for those of you who don't think Smith could have miraculously survived the first film, then please. Maybe they'll use that development to further bastardized why he's a "legend." Idiots - including Smith, who should know better.

With Statham returning to play the lead? That movie was no more ridiculous than I AM LEGEND turned out to be. I guess movie endings in which the main characters die are now passe. I can't wait for the uplifting sequel to SAVING PRIVATE RYAN, where we see Hanks's Capt. Just to be clear, since I"m semi-new to this: It's "cool" to hate a movie, because it was popular, right? I mean, I can say that it sucked, without having to back it up, right? I don't have to justify it or anything? Oh, and I have to mock relentlessly those who liked it, right? Jeebus Jeffrey JONES, people...as an adaptation, yeah, it wasn't that good, but as a movie, of itself, it was pretty cool. I do agree, though, that a sequel would not be a good idea, considering...but a prequel? Yeah, I could watch that, especially if it follows the plot outlined in the article.

After watching the ending again the head monster is banging on the glass until a piece falls out of it. Then WS grabs a grenade pulls then pin and runs at the monster who also runs at him it show them about to collide and then a big explosion. All they would have to do is show WS dropping the grenade through the hole and rolling off to the side and then what is left of the glass somehow protects him from the blast. Not the best but it could work and honestly if they are going to make another one I would rather see a sequel instead of a crap ass prequel that we already know how it ends.

I know reading a site like this makes you think is was some. awful and disaterous flop, but more people who saw the movie liked it than didn't, so i can clearly see why there would want to be a sequel / prequel. It also had a pretty decent response from established critics, especially for a movie of it's type.

Oh and yes it would have been better if they'd found something other than cgi for the "monsters". etc, Just pointing out that it's regarded by many as a pretty decent flm, as well as a pretty entertaining one.

If they really want to make a sequel to a film that the main protagonist dies in hurry up and make us a seqwel to LEON! That of course does NOT mean it's a good idea, especially if thy go withsequel and try to keep Smith alive to guarantee the box office.

I'm taking this with a huge barrel full of salt.

Other than the fact that it appeared that Smith's character had grown despondent over how he had experimented on all those people (for which he had no basis, though) and wanted to kill himself, I don't know why he didn't shove the grenade through the hole and duck. But the movie was a complete disaster, so what's one more huge plot hole.

Co-stars include Dominique Pinon, Ron Pearlman, and Audrey Tautou as Astar from the planet danger.

Since everyone pretty much agrees that ending was better. The first film hinted at the vamps being slightly human and then tossed that away. If Smith survived maybe they could see the vamps taking action like they did in the first one, maybe they don't want to be cured and they start killing the human survivors at the camp we saw at the end of the first one. I don't know it could be cool but it most likely will be horrible shit.

I wish they had followed the Richard Matheson novelette more closely. I saw The Last Man On Earth (1964) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt00 58700/ and except for the special effects I prefer that story. Vincent Price did pretty well and it followed the original story. Anyone else seen this?

I saw the Price movie. In my memory, it consists mostly of Price sitting around drinking coffee and listening to records while a bad guy bangs on his door every night and ultimately trashes his car. This thought kept running through my mind: If the bad guys know where you live because their leader remembers where your house was from when he was alive, why in the fuck don't you MOVE SOMEWHERE ELSE? If you're not going to actively try and kill these fucks, who all move slower than Latina bitches at the mall, FIND A SAFER PLACE TO LIVE.

I shouldn't be surprised, though. After all, this is the same Hollywood that just greenlit Nutty Professor 3...

Will Smith seems to be on a run of sacrilege against great sci-fi novels. First of all he still-birthed Asimov's ideas onto the screen (although the only thing I Robot really shared with Asimov was the title) and then decided that Matheson's dark allegory was actually a fun, cool story and got rid of that unnecessary dark, philosophical ending.

Please, God. If you exist, please make sure Will Smith never lays his hands on a copy of Neuromancer!

For the record, I felt that "I am (jiggy) Legend" (as it should now be called) worked fairly well as a film for about 2/3rds of the running time as long as you could get over the fact that it wasn't that faithful an adaptation. Smith played the loner character fairly well, the Dog deserved the Oscar for best supporting performance (non-human category) and the general atmosphere of the film worked well. However, three HORRIBLE mistakes make all the hate for this film justified.

First of all, the decision to make Smith's character a brilliant scientist rather than an everyman seriously undermined any dramatic tension in the plot. After all, if your plot is "find a cure for a disease" and your lead character is "genius doctor with troubled past", I would bet all the possessions I owned in the world against winning a chocolate bar that said cure is duly found in the third act. Think how many other films have become predictable for the same reason:

The Day After Tomorrow: enemy = weather, hero = meteorologist. Victory assured.

Cliffhanger: enemy = mountain, hero = mountain rescue. Victory assured.

Outbreak: enemy = virus, hero = virologist. Victory assured.

Secondly, the decision to go with all-CGI vampires was laughable. CGI may be the way forward for anything obviously NOT human (the demons in the same director's Constantine worked just fine for this exact reason), but when something is CLEARLY a human being, albeit distorted, it needs a human actor at the heart of it. 30 Days of Night showed perfectly that real (and recognisable) actors can have their features tweaked by CGI into something truly other-worldly and creepy, while still maintaining a real, human, dramatic performance at the core. Going down this route would have led to truly scary monsters and there would have been no discussion necessary about the effects as they would have been seamless.

Finally, the ending, oh the ending...

For anyone that hasn't read the book and can't understand what the fuss was about, the entire point of the novel was that Neville was truly, genuinely the LAST HUMAN ALIVE. The vampires had now evolved a sentience of their own and had become the dominant species on the planet. Neville becomes a LEGEND as he is the last of his kind. In the future, vampires might forget that human beings truly ever existed and the story of the last human being, a dangerous predator of their kind, will become almost a bedtime story. That is what a LEGEND is, a story where any truth in it may have long since been lost, but the meaning remains.

Instead, we have humans surviving (and handily popping up to watch Shrek!) and Neville developing the cure through which humanity will be saved!

First of all, one little compound in Montana or wherever the fuck it was meant to be DOESN'T mean that humanity is saved if the whole rest of the WORLD is overrun by literally BILLIONS of vampires!

Secondly, even if humanity eventually succeeds and wipes out the vampire threat, the whole purpose of the title is reversed. Neville will not be remembered as a legend, he will be remembered as a HERO. A real, historical figure who achieved a famous victory. If anything, it is the VAMPIRES who will become legends 100 generations or so after they are wiped out!

If you're going to take an existing work and loosely adapt a few of its themes, ideas and scenes into a different story of your own telling, that's not a problem. After all, this is EXACTLY what was done with this story in previous adaptations.

However, if you are going to use the same TITLE, same CHARACTERS and exact same PREMISE as the book, it is a reasonable assumption on the part of the audience that the whole POINT of the book will also be retained. The fact that this didn't happen is the cause of all the vitriol and makes it totally deserved.

So go ahead! Make a dozen sequels to this for all I care. Just as you could make a sequel to any of the dozens of teen comedies loosely based off Shakespeare and afficionados of the Bard wouldn't care, I don't care where you take this story from here, as it has nothing to do with Matheson.
Not this again.

That's the way the original story went. The zombies, or vampires, or whatever you want to call them are stupid. No superhuman strength. They're just a nuisance to him. He's not that scared of them. You see him a couple of times fight his way through groups of them, almost effortlessly. And the Price movie does cover the period from the start of the plague to Morgan ending up all alone. He goes out and kills some zombies every day because he doesn't have anything better to do. He's lonely and bored. If he misses a day, it's no big deal. In the Will Smith movie I wondered why he didn't put more effort into killing the zombies, because they were such a threat to him. In Will Smith's movie, I think it would have made much more sense if he burned down buildings where they were hiding.

If the expiration date now comes that soon, I'm going to town with my friends who haven't yet encountered the massive spoilers behind The Force Unleashed, which I would think are much more potent as they inform an entire six-movie series. Let's see...I'll give them until mid-Feb., because by then they'd have had a full six months.

I'm used to the idea of hiding spoilers for at least a few years, but I guess with the way technology's going, that window of time is closing to the day-and-date of release!

by GreatOne3

Some of the vampires in the novel had evolved to a point of sentience, but others (if not most) were still brooding beasts. Neville was unaware of the evolution, so when he was killing vampires, he was killing from both sides. The woman he runs into was an evolved vampire who was terrified of Neville, thinking him nothing more than a killing machine - their own version of Dracula. She made contact for the sole purpose of setting him up for the evolved vamps to get him, which they did.

After being captured, Neville looked down from his confinement and saw all of the other sentient vamps looking at him in amazement. It was at this point that Neville realized that he was the monster, not them. He was their Legend. That's why he killed himself (although he probably would have been killed).

The first movie totally blew the entire point of the book encapsulated in the title "I Am Legend", and now they are considering a SEQUEL? Jesus titty-fucking christ! The title of Matheson's amazing novel comes from how the book ends, WITH NEVILLE'S DEATH! *spoiler*: At the end of the novel Neville has been captured and a female sympathetic tertiary has given him some pills so that he can commit suicide before he is executed:

"Neville meets Ruth again in his prison; she informs him that she is a ranking member of this new society but unlike the others she doesn't fear and hate him. She tells him she had come to his prison to try and help him escape but that is now impossible. She acknowledges the need for Neville's execution, and slips him pills, claiming they will 'make it easier'. Emotionally broken, Neville finally accepts his fate and tearfully asks Ruth not to let this society get too brutal and heartless. Ruth kisses him and leaves.

Neville goes to his prison window and gets a glimpse of all the infected milling around in the yard waiting for his execution. When they spot him, he sees the fear, awe and horror in their eyes and he understands to them he is a scourge, just as they were a scourge to him at the beginning of the novel. Previously Neville saw the destruction of the infected survivors as a right and a moral imperative to be pursued for his own and mankind's survival, but now he finally acknowledges defeat. He is the only immune human left in the world, the only survivor of the "old race".

He glimpses a future society where infection is normal and he, Neville, is a murderous, biologic deviant. As he turns away and swallows the pills, Neville grasps the reversal that has taken place and that, just as vampires were legend in pre-infection times now he, as obsolete exemplar of old humanity, is legend in the eyes of the new race born of the infection."

Neville realizes that he will be "the boogey man" that the "new race" will tell scary stories to their children stories about around the campfire. "Be good or *The Neville" will get you". As his consciousness slips away, he concludes: "I Am Legend". Stupid fucks.

How these idiots in Hollywood could have taken that last, poignant prose and fucked it up the way they did is an abomination.

I just saw "Dead Set", and was put off by the ending the way the producer became such an illogical, irrational, bullying asshole in such a time of crisis. But then I remember crapfests like IAL and realize that such a depiction probably isn't all that far off.

Omega Man = best part of movie is flashbacks of the plague. I am Legend = best part of movie is flashbacks of the plague. Last Man on Earth = best part of movie is flashbacks of the plague. 28 Days Later = best part of movie is characters talking about stuff that happened during the plague. The Stand = sucks after the plague ends. Dawn of the Dead [both versions] = best part of movie is while society is still falling. Seeing a pattern here? The best part of movies like this is the last gasp before society goes down, but for some reason [budgetary?] filmmakers don't show enough of that, and always want to set that plot AFTER the best stuff does down. The army, the police, our religious institutions, the government - all of these things have to fall apart in the last moments of some crazy plague shit going down, and nobody ever wants to show THAT and have THAT be the story. It's always some "Survivors turn on each other / survivors learn lessons about life / survivors listen to crazy old black lady spew nonsense" plot line instead. The only movie that really put part of its focus on institutional collapse was Lifeforce, and that's only in one city, and once again it's the best part of THAT movie, too.

... Because is smart and had a good idea, amidst all the bitching in here. Parallel narratives: one showing Smith settling into the ruins of New York, losing his fellow survivors to what used to be people and by the end of the movie cracking up and starting (continuing) his first capture of and tests on live specimens, the other narrative would be him with the human survivors in the compound being overrun by the new breed and fighting for their lives and as the attacks become more sophisitcated he finally gets that the vampires are intelligent and that he's in the middle of a genesis story and that he'll be the monster in the stories of the future civilization. Bouncing back and forth between the pre- and sequel could add some great pathos as the last human finally surrenders himself to the creatures he tortured. That's a movie I'd watch. I mean, his transgression against the vampires has already happened. I'd definitely watch him come to the point where he begins his kidnapping, and the point at which he repents. But, seriously, TallBoy66 gets a prize for cleverest guy on the thread.

...I actually had something similar to that in mind that could put them on track for a legitimate sequel. Movie 1: The Legend of Robert Neville; which would focus on Neville's life and how he became the big shot scientist he is, how he meets Dr. Krippen, and eventually ending at how mankind falls. It would be a prequel that would take you to about the begining of IAL. Movie 3 would be The Legend of Alice Krippen, with the good doctor being a part of the survivors in Vermont. It would pick up from the theatrical ending of I Am Legend and we'd once again be introduced to Anna and Ethan, just as they arrived at the gates of the compound. We'd see Dr. Krippen leading the effort to synthesize a cure amongst the colony, and with Dr. Neville's cure she would be able to save everyone. She too would be consumed with the guilt that Neville was struggling with in IAL, but she'd have different ways of dealing with it. (We'd also flashback to the points in her life that happened during the evacuation, just like the first movie.) One problem though...the Darkseekers have adapted to cold, and are planning to lay siege to the colony. Just something that came to mind, I'm keeping an open mind to see just how they pull this off, but a prequel/sequel sounds about right.

"Adaptation" is necessary to translate literature to film. But how these "screen-writers" can look at a closing act like the one Matheson presents in his novel, and then change it to something as lame as what we got, is entirely beyond my comprehension. The end of this novel is what ties the whole thing together. Any other ending drastically undermines the impact of the story. A "sequel" is just greed driven idiocy. They've wrecked it enough as is. I hope Matheson sues if this actually goes into production.

The hero, grieving the death of his beloved wife, refused to incinerate her. He opts, instead, to bury her and, as a consequence, she's resurrected as a vampire. At least this passage survived an earlier adaptation, LAST MAN ON EARTH (a pretty underrated movie). In the Smith abortion, his wife is blown-up in a helicopter. Pretty chilling, huh? Also: the hero routinely leaves home to exterminate vampires. He blisfully snoozes on the job, later waking-up to realize that his watch has stopped! Darkness is falling, the vampires are pissed and he has no sanctuary! This passage is in none of the three movie adaptations. A pity--the filmmakers yielded to Hollywood in lieu of Richard Matheson's classic.

Legend explanation in the theatrical release
by Bramton1
Nov 24th, 2008
05:25:26 PM
The end of the movie states that Neville was a legend because he discovered the cure. Someone said that doesn't make you a legend, but a hero instead. I somewhat disagree. Let's say that the cure works and mankind retakes the planet. Neville will be known as the creator of the cure. Or will he? Think when a satirical email gets forwarded around, and noone knows who wrote it. Someone eventually adds some famous comic's name to it. Soon it becomes a question of "Did he say that, or didn't he?" I see something similar in this universe. Robert Neville was well-known as a scientist researching the cure. But after three years and an overwhelming majority of human race dead or infected, I expect most survivors figured him long dead. Suddenly a woman shows up and says that Robert Neville gave her the cure. I expect the popular reaction would be "Yeah, right." Now the discovery of the cure becomes attributed to an anonymous nobody, while the legend says "The great Robert Neville saved mankind." Kinda like how the legend says that the great John Henry took on the machine and won. So yes, Neville still becomes a "legend." Granted, the explanation in the book would be so much better, but whatever.

First off I really loved the first movie. I agree that the CGI monsters sucked and ruined it towards the end, but the first hour is pure gold baby. A prequel would be great for once. I like the fact that Smith fails to save the survivors that could add a great dynamic to the first film. They could also change the monsters up, seeing as how its right when they manifested. They can make it actual people in makeup and not crappy cgi. Maybe through the years they mutate into the cgi monsters but when they start off they are more human.

Have Keifer Sutherland star as Neville, he already did the audio book for it. "The Last Man on Earth" is the best adaptation of this story and that flick was made over 40 years ago. WTF. GreatOne3,

Correct point and one I was aware of re some vampires not developing sentience. I was aware of this fact, but chose to simplify my point from the point of view of not writing an epic essay, nothing more.

Johnno,

Yo u may be right there re The Matrix. Why do you think I singled out Neuromancer as the ONE property I don't want him anywhere fucking near? I can just imagine some soulless hack (or Smith's agent) going "gee, this is quite similar to that Matrix thingy" (wonder why?) "maybe Willie wants to make this instead".

As to GreatOne3's reply to your post, I have no problem with Will Smith making sci-fi films. I just have a problem with him taking sacred works of genuine art by genuine visionaries and turning them into shitty identikit action movies. MIB rocked because it was meant to be fun and worked. I Am Legend sucked because it was meant to be a philosophical treatise and failed. Miserably.

The Eskimo,

I'm not sure too many people on this board who really HATE Smith, just the choices he has made from time to time.

I really cannot understand how people can possibly be receptive to this story being sequelled or prequelled. Fair enough, if you haven't read Matheson's original story, you won't necessarily appreciate his reasoning behind the story and why it is MOST DEFINITELY a stand-alone novel. Even if you've just seen the film, though, I fail to understand how a sequel or prequel is NECESSARY.

In a prequel, you'd be looking at the gradual build up of vampires. You already know how it begins due to the original film's prologue, you know how it ends due to the situation of the world during the original film and Smith's story has nowhere to go or come from before the events of the film. What is the plot arc exactly? In order to make any sort of prequel at all you'd have to introduce a whole set of new characters, therefore the ONLY link to the story would be "vampires". Why not just come up with a new vampire movie then? Why does it have to be linked to I Am Legend?

The same works for a sequel. You would again have to introduce new characters and what would your story arc be? A small group of humans slowly, bit by bit reclaiming the world from vampires is an incredibly UN-cinematic story. As well as being too slow in pace, it would also lack anything in dramatic tension, because the ending would be already decided and you just get to watch the gradual steps leading to that inevitable conclusion. Any other story you could drag out of "small group of humans in a world of vampires" seems like either a low budget B-movie or a Sci-Fi channel miniseries, either way hardly fitting material for one of the supposed premier A-list stars in Hollywood.

Yes, I realise that I Am Legend made a lot of money (unfounately one ticket's worth came from me - they fooled me into thinking it was faithful too!), but profit alone cannot ever justify sequelising a story that just doesn't lend itself to such a process. Let's face it, they talked about a sequel to Titanic for a few days before realising how insane that idea actually was. This is probably the same kind of scenario.

This "let the vampire go and they walk away" ending, is that the alternative one on the DVD? If so, I can't comment on it, as this film wasn't worthy of my money on DVD.

The REASON it wasn't worthy is because of the novel. Pick it up at your nearest bookstore straight away! It's an old book and fairly short, so you should be able to pick it up cheaply and read it quickly. Once you do, you will never attribute the word "depth" to this movie ever again...

And heres why in a nutshell - What I like to call "Bionic Zombies". In the good old days, you had shambling slow Zombies that slowly encroached upon you...1 by 1...more and more, and you felt safe enough to walk outside, go get wood or gas, and suddenly 7 or 8 walked out of the dark, still slow, and you went to turn around, and they were everywhere. There was no direction tun, and slow as they were, the sheer NUMBERS overtook you and drug you down. Now adays, the Zombies, and I mean, ALL OF THEM... the WHOLE EARTH, are bionic. They can run at 60 miles an hour, rip doors off and smash walls down, lift cars, set elaborate traps, think and drag things around, and hang upside down on the ceiling by digging in their rotting fleshless skeleton bone fingers into the drywall support beams and rip entire chunks of the ceiling out with huge mandible bionic jaws. Now, if that aint over the top (you show me how dying and rising from the dead grants you bionic powers and strength) I dont know what is. As always, old school rules, modern CGI wet dreams drool.
Well...

Smith is the best thing in the original. The script's average - considering how good the source material is that makes it worse than average. The CGI 'vampires' are crap - shoulda gone with real people; in the book his nest door neighbor is creepy as hell (like the kid scratching on the window in Salem's Lot, TV version). And the epilogue is a slap in the face! Bringing Will back in a sequel is kicking us all while we're down. Just because a prequel sucks, doesn't make a sequel the only way to go - make leave it alone, you killed it already - maybe one day someone can film the book properly.

Haven't seen Price's "Last Man on Earth", but plan to. Omega Man was superior to the new one. I found the idea of the "society", a cult-like amalgamation of the infected, to be far creepier (and believable). I agree that "bionic zombies" are retarded and hopefully will never see the silver screen again.

In the Last Man on Earth, Neville does fall asleep during the day at one point when he visits a church. But since the zombies in that movie are dim and week, he easly fights his way through a group of them to his car. The zombies never really pose much of a threat to him.
It would be hilarious if they bring him back without mentioning.

How or why he is alive. He's just there. Like Halle Berry just not having an accent in X-Men 2. Just a hilarious monument to what a joke Smiths career is.
Thot - you can see Last Man On Earth for free on-line

I Am Still Legend opens with the death ending from the first movie. Then Smith wakes up and the alternate ending plays out. Then the true sequel begins. Cheesy, but it would work that way.
About that alternate ending where he lives ...

Where was that bridge supposed to come from? Did the people writing the end of the movie not get the memo from the people writing the start which said they blew up all the bridges?

If you're going to insult someone, at least make sure of your facts first.

I direct you to my previous post on this thread, titled "Oh Dear", where I make my feelings on this movie abundantly clear by, well, ripping it to shreds. By doing so, I make clear comparisons to the book, indicating I have, in fact, read it (at least once a year for the past 12 years, incidentally - one of the most battered, well loved and well read books in my entire collection).

In case you can't be bothered to read the post in question (after all, you were happy to base your judgement of me on one post, strangely called "in reply" - doesn't that possibly suggest it to be part of a wider conversation, especially considering the REFERENCES TO PREVIOUS POSTS?!), some excerpts follow:

"(Will Smith) decided that Matheson's dark allegory was actually a fun, cool story and got rid of that unnecessary dark, philosophical ending." - please note the heavy sarcasm involved here!

"However, three HORRIBLE mistakes make all the hate for this film justified."

"If you're going to take an existing work and loosely adapt a few of its themes, ideas and scenes into a different story of your own telling, that's not a problem. After all, this is EXACTLY what was done with this story in previous adaptations.

However, if you are going to use the same TITLE, same CHARACTERS and exact same PREMISE as the book, it is a reasonable assumption on the part of the audience that the whole POINT of the book will also be retained. The fact that this didn't happen is the cause of all the vitriol and makes it totally deserved."

"I don't care where you take this story from here, as it has nothing to do with Matheson."

I hope I have made my feelings for this movie abundantly clear. I have only seen Omega Man once - and that was before I read the book - and have never seen the Vincent Price version, so do not feel I can realistically comment on those particular adaptations, hence I haven't, except in generic terms. I have been made abundantly aware of how unfaithful to the book they are, however, which is why I am in no rush to watch them.

I would hope you are man enough to apologise (or woman enough if you are that way inclined gender-wise!), as I consider I have made my feelings on this MASTERPIECE OF LITERATURE fairly clear by now. In future, if you're going to insult someone for their beliefs, try to make sure of exactly WHAT their beliefs are by reading ALL of their comments on the subject in question, rather than just taking their most recent post and forming a sweeping, generalised opinion from it...

Maybe he wakes up, and he just dreamt about the girl and the kid.
He's been alone all this time.

Maybe he wakes up, and he's in the cave from THE DESCENT.
