That's lovely! More proof that FOX is retarded. Depth, History and Detail. A fully realized sci-fi universe. And they cancelled it? I could rant but I've had a beer or ten so I won't waste anyone's time. Man! SSOOOOO dumb.

No need to kill for a high res version, just fork over your money and they will deliver it to your door. Nice poster. I wonder if this idea, this fully realized universe was there from the outset or if someone (someone not Whedon or Minear) just sat down for one afternoon and came up with it to make some more money out of this.

Firefly was the greatest show nobody watched. I love the 14 episodes and the movie that they "allowed" us to see. But I don't see the point of this. It's very pretty, but really, for $34.95US...what's the point?

Because $34.95 is not a very high price to pay to have something nice to hang on a wall. I'm sure there are more than a few of us out there that have rooms decorated in space themes, and this would be a fantastic addition (and no, they're not all basement rooms - some of us DO have wives that are into it as well)

...and that was Firefly and Serenity failed. I remember watching the first episode, and I really wanted it to be good and watchable, but there was just something "not good" about it. It was like mixing ketchep and ice cream. I like both of those foods, but when mixed together it sucks. Therefore, I will not buy this poster, and I will do whatever I can to limit it's distribution in the United States.

So they are making up the planet names now that the show is past, done with, and key tossed into the toilet. Just like Star Wars... the background aliens that show up for a second of screentime, then get a whole backstory and name when the toy comes out "to collect em all!"

Contrary to what JJ Binks might say (and how can you seriously trust someone with THAT abomination in his screen name?!), I think Summer Glau is a VERY good actress. JJ Binks obviously thinks it's easy to portray emotion in an EMOTIONLESS face, which her major appearances so far have necessitated. It's all in the eyes and isn't that what all the so-called "good" actors do? She's had the misfortune to be somewhat typecast, but soon someone will offer her a decent role to sink her teeth into and then you'll see...

EriamJH is right, though. In the drool stakes, it's Inara all the way.

Don't care about this poster, though...

but the fact that all the "alien planets" were actually 2 miles outside of LA with nothing done to disguise this fact was entirely too distracting. If aintitcool didn't challenge the "Verse" map I would have never searched for it. I mean the Verse mape is cool, but I'd say this blows it away. Especially since it's on canvas.

I don't know if this point has been raised already, but I'm not going to bother to go back and read it all-- How the fuck can you even have a map of space? Seriously. A universe exists in three dimensions. A map is a two-dimensional representation. Wouldn't there necessarily be some overlap on the XYZ-axises? I especially think it's kinda rude and presumptuous to gush about how "Non-Fans" might want to buy this thing. There's a reason us non-fans aren't fans of "Firefly"-- WE THINK THAT IT'S BAD.

Flat space
by Beowulf316
Nov 25th, 2008
11:20:14 AM
Showing planetary bodies in this flat map style format is perfectly acceptable. I’ll bet every science text book you ever had in school had a diagram of the planets, in our own solar system, displayed in the exact same fashion. Getting upset at this poster for being flat is just as ridiculous as getting upset that the map in your glove box for not being round with raised mountains.

That's the thing, though-- even though the planets in our system orbit along different axises (axes?), we can all understand that they rotate around the same body, and can therefore be shown in non-realistic juxtoposition. Flat space just doesn't translate to a galactic scale, however, and I really wonder what the use of this sort of thing is supposed to be. Flat-space depictions of our solar system are there as educational diagrams, basically just outlining the order of the planets. It wouldn't work as a map, however, because it wouldn't really tell you anything about their orbital patterns, timelines, exact positions, etc. A flat-space map is absolutely worthless as a navigational tool, so it really wouldn't make much sense to create an in-verse map of "The Verse". I mean, honestly-- how is somebody supposed to find their way through space with that? The only excuse it has, really, is as a gimmicky piece of merchandise, but if something this lazy were actually used in the show-- oh, sweet baby Jesus, it'd be stupid...

by Beowulf316
Nov 25th, 2008
06:00:29 PM
Well, you are right when you say this is simply a piece of merchandise designed for the fans, but I disagree with your thoughts that this is stupid since, when viewed from the context of the series, it would be worthless for navigation. If this particular map did exist inside the Firefly series I doubt it would be used for navigation at all. It would be probably used for the same kind of things we use our solar system maps for. If I understand your argument correctly you feel that 2D maps of our solar system are ok because, our solar system is simple and that this fictional star system is way to complex to be shown this way. I do agree that if the star cluster known as the Verse was real it would most likely be too complicated to accurately depict in 2D, but I don't think it would be any more or less accurate (or useless) than the 2D maps of our solar system. Like you say, "Flat-space depictions of our solar system are there as educational diagrams, basically just outlining the order of the planets". If our own maps are too inaccurate to do more than that how could a map of something more complex be held to higher standards? If it won't work for 8 planets who would expect it to work for 200. Our maps are use for simple things and I don't know why you assume that this map would be used for any thing else. Earth's astronaut do not look at maps when they miss the left turn on the way to Mars and neither do the characters in Firefly. If the Verse were a real place I think the inhabitants would view a map like this in the same fashion as we view maps our solar system. Simply as a way of visually displaying the general order of nearby planets and stars, not a as a navigational tool. I feel that the people of the Verse would understand the nonrealistic juxtaposition of this map just as you and I understand ours.
Hopefully
