http://www.ajiraairways.com/ kinda says it all.... The skies have no limit with our new destinations launching January 21st, 2009. Take an adventure anywhere around the globe and reimagine your world as big as ours. Check back often to discover new ways to get lost in the world. No Borders, Now Boarding - Ajira Airways. It's a Friday night and I have a life, kind of, no time to explore this. Save it for Sunday. Also Lost is losing some momentum with their absence as in the "old days" I would be all over a clue like this. Nothing lasts forever I guess.

What...The...Fuck. This is why I love this fucking show so much. The fact that are always thinking and including these interesting things and making the experience so engaging and fun makes it worthy of the devotion people like me have to the show. I don't need the answers right away, like some people who can't be patient enough to be told a story from beginning to end. The level of intrigue and attention to detail is just fantastic.

The freighter scenes in season 4 were all very obviously Shining influenced. They even acknowledged it when Minkowski asked Michael if he was going to go "All Jack Nicholson" on everybody. I don't know if someone spoke about it here but the arab/french actor Said Taghmaoui (known for being the young guy in Kassovitz's "La Haine") will be playing the role of "Caesar" in this season. I get what you're saying but I think it's a mistake to use S1 as the standard. I think with any TV series, you have to allow the show to evolve, but particularly with Lost, it was explicit in the text of the show that this was a mystery; what you think is happening may not in fact be happening. By that measure, I would argue that the first season wouldn't be my first stop when it comes to defining what the show is about.

necgray and other general Ben Linus musings...
by Ribbons
Nov 22nd, 2008
04:50:45 PM
...I have to say, it bothers me how almost everybody I talk to about the episode where Alex is killed seems to think that Ben brought his daughter's death on himself because of some sort of smugness or arrogance (which, granted, is only a handful of people). He was in a pretty impossible situation if you think about it, and I actually think that was one of the few instances where he tried to do the right thing. I love how terrified Emerson sounds when he says "I'm not coming out of this house" because you can tell that he IS afraid of the consequences. But anyway, I actually think Ben represents a part of the show that was prominent in season 1, which is moral relativism. The whole point of the flashback conceit and '-centric' episodes, it seems to me, was to make us understand everybody's perspective.

Morality, as you point out, is a huge part of the grand tapestry of Lost. But as RIbbons has pointed out, moral relativism has been inherent with the fabric of the show since the second episode, where we find out that our heroine (Kate) is actually an escaped convict. Lost is the quintessential example of the postmodern characteristic of the "neo-golden age" of television. All the qualities we love about current tv has to do with moral ambiguity and the grey area of good and evil. Even in film, we have 'No Country', 'There Will Be Blood' and most recently 'The Dark Knight'. This has been the dominant discourse of pop culture for the past decade. I will, however, include that this discourse is starting to change. I want to see some happy endings for godsakes.
Personally...
by Ribbons
Nov 22nd, 2008
05:44:24 PM
...well, for one thing I never thought that Ben masterminded the "Purge" of the Dharma Initiative. I don't know if the writers did or wanted us to think he did, but I got the sense that he still answered to Richard (or someone, at least) at that point. Which isn't meant to detract from all the other things he's done, but again, part of the storytelling structure of the show is to peel back layers of a character in order to make them seem more human to the audience. With Ben I do think the writers are aware that he's already done too much to be completely absolved, and by the time the show is over he'll probably end up being killed or whatever, but I think most of the characters in the show sort of act in their own interests. They're not always as extreme as Michael shooting Ana-Lucia or Ben stabbing Keamy, but the point is that they're not just performing a morality play; how we look at them depends on the situation. And personally, it creeped me out when the show started talking about "good guys" and "bad guys" at the end of season 2, so I'm glad that it sort of moved away from that.

Ben being responsible for the Purge
by D.Vader
Nov 22nd, 2008
05:52:01 PM
Zeddmore, you might be the only person who thinks that Ben is somehow absolved and guiltless for his actions during the Purge. I don't believe for a second that what Ben and the writers truly meant was that "It wasn't my fault."

And I don't recall what the exact dialogue was, but I think the inference the audience was supposed to get was this: I wasn't in charge of the Others at the time, and the Purge was not my idea. However, I was their man on the inside and thus I did have a big hand in the genocide.

The writers aren't going to suddenly say Ben was not responsible for everyone's death when he told Locke or Hurley at the mass gravesite that he killed all those people.

Hurley has been the one character that has attempted to be nice and friendly to just about EVERYONE on the show, even in the beginning when the "bad" guys were Sawyer, Jin, Ana-Lucia, etc.

I dont think it was out of character for Hurley to strike up a conversation with Ben during moments of duress and fear. That's what he does, its how he's been setup.

Well, I'm assuming you saw Season 4, and if you did, you'd know the reason they kept him alive was that he was too dangerous to just let loose all on his own. He was a prisoner for most of the season and then on the run with them for the latter half. You make it sound like they kept him around as a friend and cohort, but that's not the case.

Well that has been one of LOST's weaknesses
by D.Vader
Nov 22nd, 2008
06:09:19 PM
And a weakness of just about any major drama- the lack of continuity regarding characters' emotions. The beginning of Season 4 was spot on for Hurley and Claire in regards to their emotions in knowing about Charlie's death.

But then they forgot! I remember being absolutely FURIOUS when Claire comes out of her bedroom in New Otherton and tells Kate she has a hard time sleeping.

Why does she have a hard time? Is it because she's still distraught over Charlie and has been crying, like she should have been? NO! Its because she says sleeping on beds is too weird now!

Bollocks! But the writers have acknowledged that they have to let characters move on more quickly than they would in the real world. 'Cause mopey, depressed characters aren't that interesting when they stay that way week to week.

Still, the writer of that particular episode (and I think it was a new writer and their first episode) should be slapped for that mischaracterization.

I seem to remember that in Season 1 that Jin, Sawyer & Locke were all thought to be the myteriously bad guys just like Ben is. But the more that we found out about them in later episodes the more good they looked. Ben has gone through a lot of redemption just like them like Alex being shot and getting beat up a lot. we have also learned about his childhood. Sure theres still a lot of redemption to make for him, but his always trying to do whatever it takes for the greater good in his mind is a lot like Locke. Who knows maybe part of Ben's redemption is also being kicked off the island?

As for Hurley I think that like someone said before, he's just that way. He's easy going Hurley.

anybody wanna tell me why that one guy from the Others is always the same age, even in the flashbacks?

And remember those two skeletons Jack and Kate find in that cave in the very beginning of the first season? Yeah, betcha that's Jack and Kate in the past.

People forget about the old shit they never answer too easily. I blame the island.

... have moved onto the new "in" shows. How could you losers still be into Lost? It's like, so yesterday. Hip, young viewers like JJ Binks are totally into the freshest television programs that all the coolest people watch. You nerds are pathetic.

You should see the awesome viewing parties where all the dashing, popular people like JJ get together and watch TV. So glamorous and cutting edge. No old, boring, ancient fuddy-duddy shit like Lost. No. A fifth season? The hippest TV viewers watch half a season of any given show, max. I just can't believe people can look themselves in the mirror and call themselves TV show watchers after any longer than that.

YAWN (that yawn wasn't for "Lost" ... it was for the clueless talkbackers who constantly post "People still care about this show?".) Again YAWN.
People still troll Lost talkbacks?

the biggest douchebag in the U.S., you know, the kind that likes to wipe his ass with his hands, then suck the shit from underneath the fingernails, one at a time, to make it last, but no-- he isnt - he is just a schlubby spooge sucker who worships the show "Cupid", because it rhymes with stupid, and this is the sort of show he can comprehend, because it has to do with "trends" and stuff- you know, I bet he fantasizes about doing Sarah Palin because she reminds him of his mommy but anyway, he needed to scurry back to his pimple popping before his mommy calls for her "medicine" again
Binks is a troll.

Pure and simple. I could tell him that this is just a TB for a Lost trailer and not an episode and that those still smash a Heroes episdoe TB to bits. I could tell him that this is the third Lost TB in a week and that that might effect the number of posts. I could tell him that the Season FOUR finale TB is still relatively active and hits the top ten occassionally. I could tell him all those things, but it wouldn't change the fact that he's still just a pathetic little asshole of Heroes worshipping troll who's pissed becasue his show is a pitiful abomination.
