I'm not the biggest Aronofsky fan either but that looked pretty good. What happened to Mickey Rourke's face? is that make up? cosmetic surgery gone bad? or just age?

10:18:32 AM
He fixed up areas of his face from damage all that boxing caused. Drugs and booze took a toll on his face as well. I like his face. It has lots of character. It looks like the face of someone who's lived a hard life, it's the face of a survivor, and theres lots of quiet peace in it now. So glad he's still here with us and that he defeated his demons. That charming smile is still there. I can't wait for this movie. It looks like an emmotional roller coaster with a big bloody heart! This is the Rocky we Sly could never find. There is no Apollo Creed or Clubber Lang. It's just himself. He is/was the only thing destroying his life.

Saw it the other day. Aronofsky and Tomei were there after the screening (yes, there's plenty of Tomei nudity, Mr. Gibsteinberg). The film didn't pack the kind of punch I've come to expect from Aronofsky, but he actually didn't write this film, so that's what I attribute it to. Otherwise, Rourke is fantastic, and overall, it's a very good film.

As a fan of professional wrestling, I'm extremely happy that Darren Aronofsky took the subject matter seriously. It’s amazing that some of these professional wrestlers that were headliners when I was a kid are now broken down former shells of themselves (Bret Hart, Iron Shiek, etc.). Looks like a sure hit and I can’t wait to see it.

It was the best film I've seen in over a year. Sure, the plot's a little obvious, and plays out just like you'd expect from that trailer. And don't look TOO hard at that trailer, it contains stuff from the final scene.

But yeah, none of that really matters. Bottom line, this movie is amazing. Imagine a strange parallel universe where Rocky 5 was an Oscar-winning masterpiece. Only better.

My new trailer rule...
by Reckoner
Nov 21st, 2008
01:42:04 PM
I don't even want to watch the trailer because I want everything to be fresh when I see it. You guys should try this on movies you know you will see anyway... it enhances the experience of watching a movie and its impact. Let's face it, trailers are cut these days to give basically the entire plot outline and even reveal key scenes toward the end of the movie. If you can just get by on maybe a few pictures or just read a little about it. But staying away from the trailers, if possible, makes more of an impact when you sit down and have no idea of what is said or done. I did this with The Dark Knight: only watched the trailer a few months ahead of time, but that was it. By the time the movie came out, I had forgotten most dialogue, etc from the trailers. Whenever a TV spot came on, I turned the channel so I wouldn't have anything memorized from the trailers and TV spots. And when I sat down to watch The Dark Knight on opening weekend, I had even more excitement and fulfillment because I didn't know anything. I can understand if you want to see a trailer because you have mixed views about seeing it or need to be convinced to see it, but if you know you will see a movie and you know you will probably like/love it, don't bother. You'll be rewarded... I'm going to do the same thing with Benjamin Button & Watchmen.

The trailer looked great. Rourke is a very interesting actor. He has shown flashes of brilliance in his career - like Barfly, The Pope of Greenwich Village, and Angel Heart - before he started to morph his face with the cheek implants, eye lifts - and now with the lip implants. He is only a few operations away from looking like that cat-faced lady we see from time to time in the Enquirer. Anyway, apart from roles like Sin City where he can be disguised in makeup, he will have a tough time getting roles - unless for some kind of fucked up tranny or accident victim. Plastic surgery just doesn't work too well on men. Just look at Burt Reynolds, Jerry Jones, Kenny Rogers, Stallone (though better than most)and David Gest (Liza Minelli's ex), That being said, The Wrestler looks like it was perfect for him - and heartfelt. I'm glad for that and looking forward to it.

And to those who are being recommended Before The Devil Knows Your Dead because of Marisa's boobies and such, you should know that it is also a fucking awesome movie. I have to admit. That after seeing this film at TIFF this year I couldn't talk for about 10 minutes after it finished. It was that effective at putting into this poor bastards life. Really tears at the heart strings and doesn't resemble anything Aronofsky has ever done. One of the year's best. And no, no Evan Rachel Wood boobies. But you do see him fuck a coke slut which is fun.
The bit about Cobain and the 90's is awesome!

...starring Mickey Rourke, people wouldn't be doing cartwheels over it. Maybe the movie is as amazing as people say, but apart from the last shot where Rourke's goofing off with the guy behind the counter, the trailer's pretty forgettable. It looks like any other "one last chance at glory" film that's been made in the last decade or so. Maybe I'd care more if I hadn't already seen ROCKY BALBOA.

Am I the only one that thinks he got his new lips just for this role? Most of you seem to think that he just happened to look like a walking rectum when he walked on set. Botox is temporary, and it's not out of the realm of imagination that he got some "tight and shiny" to ad a layer of complexity to the character. Granted his appearance has changed quite a bit since the 80's, but he hasn't gone THAT far over the edge... has he?

Props to the hundreds of puppeteers that operate the muscles on his face.Sadly, technology is not so advanced that he can realistically show emotion yet... the film looks like a wrestling version of Rock Balboa and the trailer left me cold...

anyone who saw the long and depressing Jake the Snake section of this film will undoubtedly see some similarities. How Jake is slumming it with all the indy feds, and reunites with his daughter whom he slighted for so many years. It has the same gritty look of that footage, which is to make it seem as real, I'm sure. Though I don't mind, it looks like a great film and I know anyone that's followed wrestling will understand every bit of the character's motivations and how hard it is on the indy circuit and how addicted to the spotlight washed up wrestlers are and so on. Which is probably why the trailer affected some (me being one) as it looks like the film gets it right.

I get teary-eyed everytime. I hope it's as good as the hype it's getting and i'm no wrestling fan by far. In fact, I hope he wins the f'ing Oscar for best actor in a leading role. And for the person who said he'd be going up against Ledger, Health would be in a different category, supporting.

and its amazing that Mickey is even still alive today. The man is a walking catalog of physical and emotional pain. He is a fucking acting God to so many actors of his generation. Could you imagine his acceptance speech at the Oscars? I hope someone shoots the conductor if they try to play him off.

So, no one saw Rourke's Homeboy about the aging boxer who is down on his luck and is advised not to get hit in the head again? Very similar but I agree that this will be great! Maybe not Johnny Handsome great, but great! (Any movie directed by Walter Hill with Rourke, Ellen Barkin and Lance Henriksen can NEVER be topped! It is nice to have Rourke back (though for some of us he never left because we watched everything he did) but much nicer to have him in quality films again.

Mickey's face has looked fucked up for years. It started w/ steroids back in the 90's. He used to be normal sized, then suddenly he's got like an addtiional 80 pounds of unnatural looking muscle almost overnight... the he started on the face.It really is too bad.

i was lucky enough to see it at a prescreening this week in dallas. Darren Aronofsky and Marisa Tomei were there for a Q&A afterward. I think this one is going to surprise a lot of people. It's very funny and as much of an emotional beating as you think it may be. I've been thinking about writing it up for submission. i may do that if anyone cares.

I caught this at the closing night of the NY film festival at Lincoln Center. The audience gave a standing ovation to Rourke & Company for 3 straight minutes during the end credits. If i hadnt lost all my money in the stock market, i would go to one of those sites that lets you bet on the oscars and put it all on Rourke for Best Actor. Its a sure thing that standing O will be repeated endlessly during the upcoming award season! The man simply rules in this picture and will make you laugh and make you cry. What else could you want? (oh yeah Marisa Tomei is naked too) - so that kinda takes care of everything huh? GO SEE THIS!!!!

I saw this movie with a Q&A with the writer (who used to be the editor in chief of The Onion, incidentally) and he said that a direct influence on the creation of this film was the documentary "Beyond The Mat". So, yes, Jake The Snake is definitely a catalyst for this story, but he did say that there were several other wrestlers from the glory days that inspired the work as well, and this character's story isn't completely similar to Jake's.
By the way...

It is one of those few times when an actor is perfectly cast for a movie role. I am a fan of wrestling. I have loved it since I was a kid watching Dusty Rhodes wrestle in Florida. I can't think of a single good wrestling movie that has ever come out. This one looks good. Rourke, a broken down actor, is playing a broken down wrestler who is begging for work and seeking redemption. Yes, absolutely, I'm there...
