It wouldn't be hard to best his body of work so far. He is the epitome of mediocrity, as far as his films go. Having said that, if Apollo 13 -- a true story -- hadn't had sound effects in the vacuum of space -- it would have been a truly excellent movie. A better director would have used the silence as a dramatic device.

"David Frost was not the man set up to take him down." Frost's power was in APPEARING to be lightweight when he has always had a sharp, incisive mind. Massawyrm is just trying to throw praise and AICN cineaste street cred at a huge hollywood prestige project. "You know what other movie is also great?...Will Smith's next movie!!! Frank Langella as Skeletor = Best "Toy" Super Villian Ever!!!
by Demode
Nov 19th, 2008

Frank Langella owned as Skeletor in the original MOTU movie. Sure, the movie kind of sucked, but his Skeletor was amazing. No live action "toy" movie has had a better villian. If Warners does indeed make a new He-Man movie, they would be smart to cast Langella as the "VOICE" of Skeletor. No one could do it better.

by Leafar the Lost

I really can't. It makes no sense to have someone who writes movie and Roleplaying Game reviews on AICN who has never seen Battlestar Galactica. Massawyrm seemed proud of it when he wrote it; I saw it as weirdly pathetic. Normally, the people who choose not to have cable/satellite do it for religious or other stupid reasons, and they believe that they are better than the rest of us. I do not believe for a second that Massawyrm cannot afford to buy cable, when he can afford to subscribe to a monthly Dungeons and Dragons service. I know he is paying at minimum $50.00 a month or more on roleplaying products. Finally, I will see the Frost/Nixon movie, but not because of Massawyrm's review. In fact, his review made me not want to see it, but I am a fan of Ron Howard, and I have learned to trust anything that Massawyrm writes. Thank you for your time.

"A Beautiful Mind" was one long lie. Read the book - heck, just read the lengthy introduction - to see how much Goldsman and Howard chose not to put on the screen, or how they chose to water it down to make it more like the movies and less like messy reality.

i vote that we start a "for your consideration" movement to award frank langella a retrospective best actor oscar for 'masters of the universe'. as has been stated ad nauseum his performance was, all jokes aside, brilliant. absolutely menacing, note perfect. ive got a massive soft spot for the film and most of that is to do with him. hes a villian who doesnt patronise the audience and who is genuinely evil. top, top marks mr. langella. ill leave with this: "everything comes to he who waits. and ive waited so very long for this moment" whoever wrote that film, kudos to you too...we'll motion for you to get a screenwriting gong also.

From what I've seen of That Was the Week That Was, you could think of David Frost as the Jon Stewart of his day, only more aggressive. But to be fair to Massawyrm, the movie is supposed to play down that side of Frost, I guess to make it more of a David and Goliath battle.

He does assemble damn good casts. I liked early Howard, when he was trying to prove that he was not Opie Taylor or Richie Cunningham; that he had a dirty little mind and liked to be a little raunchy.

I like Far and Away a lot. That is probably his finest achievement. Willow, I credit to Lucas.

I don't despise anything Howard has done. I just think he is a very bland filmmaker. Take The Grinch for example, amazing set design and make-up and everything but he was somehow able to make it feel dull and ordinary even in that magic world.

I was speaking of the CHARACTER as presented in the film, not of Frost himself. I've seen enough of these Biopics to know that characters are far too often sexed up or dressed down to make the story more interesting, and take this as a character rooted in fact rather than a portrayal of an actual person.

With every review that he writes Massawyrm gives us a few more details about his life, and what we see is truly disturbing. By the way, "A Beautiful Mind" was a great movie, and one of the reasons for it's success was that Clint Howard was not in it. I wish Ron would stop supporting his idiot brother's career. It's the only one he ever made that doesn't overreach or drown you in triteness. Other than that, he is the consummate go-to Director for Oscar bait films that critics always end up recognizing just don't go the mile but the run of the mill public ends up swooning over.

Other examples of these psuedo-contenders, Howard directed and otherwise, are: The Last Samurai, Crash, Apollo 13, Glory, Charlie Wilson's War, Cinderellla Man, Changeling, the works of Rob Reiner, Edward Zwick, even Spielberg's had a few not-quite there yet lightweights: The Terminal, Catch Me if you Can, Amistad. There seems to be one in contention every year before the nominations are announced. Usually, they are mercifully snubbed, but sometimes they break through, and every once in a while they win the whole damn thing, like Crash.

I suspect this year's idiot's contender for Best Picture will be this year's Far and Away, Baz Luhrmann's Australia.

Just like Pacino won for Scent Of A Woman, Beautiful Mind was given for his long, and most important successful body of work. Since Splash broke out in what?, 1984-85, Howard's had how many flicks?? And of all genres and types. And he's widely regarded as one of the nicest guys in Hollywood. (Nice guys can finish first) So add all that up, they give you an Oscar...

Iron Man and Quantum of Solace don't deserve to be on that list. QOS wasn't as good as Casino Royale, and it was ultimately forgettable. And Iron Man was so cookie-cutter standard by the numbers fare. Tropic Thunder however was great, as was TDK and Wall=E

I'm sure that Frank Langella is outstanding and he also probably will turn in the true best performance of the year with this, but dammit, I'll really be disappointed if he takes the award away from Mickey Rourke in The Wrestler.

The Wrestler is a good film, but it gets bumped up to GREAT status based on Rourke's performance.

With this match up the Oscars will at least be worth watching this year.
