The current model for anime production largely focuses on producing products for a young audience and hard core fans. Basically, the audiences who'll buy merchandise. A lot of anime is really only recommendable to anime enthusiasts and genre fans. That said, The Girl Who Leapt Through Time is a work of art that will delight any viewer. If Hayao Miyazaki movies are the only anime that you watch, expand your horizons a bit check out The Girl Who Leapt.

what is it with you and obscure crap films no one has ever heard of? And there are lots of good anime, they just don't make it stateside legally. Macross Frontier is surprisingly watchable, even if a little kiddy at times. Pretty much anything from Gonzo and Studio Madhouse is good, as well as Studio Bones.

Yeah, in 2006 the buzz was that Josh Olson was writing a script for the live action Monster adaptation. As far as I can tell, the movie hasn't made it past the screenplay phase. I haven't heard/seen anything about casting or planned filming. If you enjoyed Monster, make sure to check out Naoki Urasawa's 20th Century Boys and Pluto mang. Both will be published in North America by Viz in January and both have recently been previewed in the AICN Anime column.

I took my 3-yr-old son to see it four times in theaters and bought the Blu-ray yesterday so we could watch it last night. Every single time, he sat stock-still through the whole thing, completely mesmerized. Didn't even want to bug me to get up and take him to the restroom. So yes, my kid LOVES it. But my wife and I are both huge sci-fi nerds and film lovers, so he's been exposed to more nerdy stuff than the average kid. I suspect it all depends on what the parents are letting kids watch. Let them watch crap, and they'll develop banal tastes.

Most anime is shit on a stick (its true), but I actually found THE GIRL WHO LEAPT THROUGH TIME" to be a good exception. A friend recommended it to me, and despite its young-girl attitude, it was actually a pretty sweet story that played out quite well.

Nice to see Japanese animation that isn't cluttered with esoteric and mind-numbingly bad dialog. Just a good, sweet movie that wasn't preachy or pretentious...again, unlike 95% of the shit that country produces.

I wasn't being sarcastic actually. I had never heard of Sophie Scholl before the movie, and I'm of German heritage. And you can go fuck yourself with your little jibe at American schooling, fuckwit. You actually think schools outside Germany don't teach about WWII? That's the one of the dumbest things I've read on this site. More like crammed down our throats my friend. We just get more of an American viewpoint of the war so relatively obsure German figures like Sophie Scholl may be lost on some of us.

"Many hate it, fewer love it, but I come down with the minority opinion – I love the film." I think that's at least two redundancies in the span of fifteen words, which is an impressive achievement. We then continue with "It is absurdist, sardonic and a pessimistic view of where this country was once headed, have we averted this future, I feel so, but 48% of the country would probably disagree." That's transcends a mere run-on sentence to become a marathon sentence. // They are, however, continuing to let Richard Kelly make movies, so it wasn't a total loss.

Robert Downey Jr does almost the whole thing in character. Then when his character switches to Australian, he switches to Australian dialect in the commentary. Everyone seemed to genuinely like and respect each other, which is refreshing.

Tropic Thunder Director's Cut
by Vern
Nov 19th, 2008

I guess it's about 13 minutes longer, not necessarily better or worse. There's one scene added before they go into the jungle where Steve Coogan is trying to get the actors to have a meeting during a party, it establishes the characters and his desperation a little more but isn't that important. The rest is just added lines and jokes throughout. My favorite additions were Jay Baruchel talking about Renny Harlin being underrated and some Ben Stiller movie-within-the-movie lines that I think were new, but I could be wrong.

The extras on that disc are great though. I remember a bunch of people complaining about Steve Coogan not being in the movie enough, well he's in the "Reign of Madness" documentary more than he's in the movie, so check that one out.

Also I would like to praise the designers of this DVD because under the paper sleeve it looks like a real war movie, there is very little to indicate it's a comedy and that's pretty cool.

I'm skipping Blu-ray. By the time I've spent the hundreds for a new player, and further hundreds for a disc collection, I'd wind up with MAYBE 5 years worth of use before all this becomes obsolete. All this will be available in a digital format for download via X-box or a netflix equivalent in HD in a few years anyway. Blu-ray is great and all, but it's the music DVD of our times. A High quality format that will not survive the convenience of downloadable HD that is already becoming ubiquitous. Skip the expense. That said, I try to ignore all of Harry's gushing over the format, because he points out the interesting small genre films that come out unnoticed buried under the hype of bigger movies, that I would otherwise miss. This column keeps my netflix list well stocked. I wish he would put a little more focus on under-the-radar genre releases and less on 20 year old movies we've all seen becoming available on Blu-ray. How many people here actually have a collection extensive enough to care about purchasing Sophie Scholl on DVD, let alone the newly available Blu-ray?

THE WHO AT KILBURN
by Mr. Nice Gaius
Nov 19th, 2008
05:37:40 PM
As a huge Who nut, this is a real treat. What's even cooler is the bonus disc which includes a monster gig from the London Coliseum (I believe).

DarthJedi - strangely enough, the Kilburn show is NOT Keith Moon's last performance with The Who. It was his second-to-last.

The Kilburn gig is infamous for a number of reasons. But it's the show that was originally filmed to be included in The Who's first biopic, THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT. However, the band had not played in over a year and Keith was out of form on the drums. (You can actually see the physical change in his appearance due to his excessive lifestyle.) Afterwards, the band and filmmakers decided that they were not pleased with the gig and agreed to film another show at Shepperton Studios later on. It was this later show that would go on to make up the footage we all know and love from THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT. (If you look closely, you can see that everyone, except Moon, wore the exact same outfits from Kilburn.) So, ultimately, the Shepperton gig was Moon's last performance with The Who.

Cheers!

The penultimate scene where his memory gets wiped and Eve is trying to get him to remember who he is and herself made me shed a tear, even though I knew that Pixar wasn't as heartless as Disney and would eventually find someway to flip it back to a happy ending. Fuck you Pixar.
you hate Wall-E because it made you cry?

I meant to say that I hated pixar for managing to to elicit a tear from me with a such a wonderfully executed scene, even if I knew how it was going to end.
I figured that's what you meant

Is that box like a special edition or something? Looks thick... Anyway I wanted to check out Mirror mask, maybe I'll try renting it, as for Wall-E, I like it, but I like Finding Nemo, Incredibles, and Ratatouille much better...
Anyone who doesn't love MirrorMask...

I love Pixar. I love animation. I do not get WallE. Not at all. It is by far Pixar's weakest film for me. I wish I could see it in the way the fans do. But I just don't get it.
Girl Who Leapt Through Time (Sucks!)

I'm no snob towards anime (FLCL and Miyazaki are two of my favorite things, anime or not). I'm totally fine with a romantic drama/mushy coming-of-age story if it's done correctly. I absolutely LOVE time travel as a concept, and I ABSOLUTELY HATE "The Girl Who Leapt Through Time." The story was loose, the rules were unclear, the protagonist was whiny and brain-dead. This was possibly my least favorite time-travel movie ever. If you want something good, watch PRIMER.

Just saw this movie right now. I must say, they don't make gutsy ' high school films ' like this anymore. It's really the film for people who certainly didn't buy into any of that teenaged sort of garbage when it was happening, in a terse, focused, legitimate sort of way. One that just skirted out of that dumb milieu, into crafting a brutal, fascinating narrative about youth, society, class politics and force of arms. Truly unbelievable. " Mean Girls " is just a meaningless, downgraded, egghead , Tina-Feyed saccharine shit version for the plastic MTV set that got into the joke instead of laughing at it. Negative points again, for that bitter Clintonite hag. If it weren't for Sarah Palin..... Mature fun film for those who never got the deal with all that manufactured subcultural nonsense, yet not acting pathetically sorry for not ' getting the date at the prom '. I'd recommend it to everybody !
