to enjoy the trailer. Seriously, it's nice to see The Rock grow and go from The Rock to Dwayne Johnson. Don't get me wrong, I don't want him to give up on the action movies, but it all started with Be Cool, then there was that Disney football movie, then Get Smart, now this. I'm glad we didn't see him lay the smack down on the evil aliens. That's old Rock. I like Dwayne.

The scene with the truck hitting the kid reminded me of Cassidy vs. the Saint of Killers in PREACHER. Oh, well, if they never adapt that into a movie or series, I guess people can just rip off all the awesome parts piecemeal, right?

i thought the same thing. The kids have all these fantastic super powers and they need help?! Think I'd rather see a film about adult aliens that had those powers and just follow them kicking ass.

can someone give dwayne johnson a good film please? And not a disney one? The guy is brilliant, obviously physically he can pull off the action hero role, but he's also got excellent comic timing. Can someone give him an real film role that mixes these two? Where's a shane black script when you need it.

I remember the first two films and loved them. Does anyone know if the original kids are going to make cameos or anything all grown up? Maybe as a couple of the pursuing agents or something? @grammaton- I could be wrong but I think Dwayne Johnson has started doing these movies because he has kids and he wants them to be able to watch his films. I have a lot of admiration for that. We live in a world with people who don't have any moral values and don't want to stand up and do the right thing...he is setting an EXCELLENT example for his children by doing these kinds of movies.

In the original the kids had telekenisis, and I think that was it. Maybe they talked to animals too, but I don't remember. So there I can see them needing help from the late great Eddie Albert in his flying Winnebago. Well, okay, they made it fly. But this one it looks like except for flying we have junior superheroes. Again, I will see this, I just hope they offer a valid explanation as to why they need any help.
THE ROCK a kids film pussy or action star?
by ABking
Nov 18th, 2008
09:43:29 AM
Is THE ROCK a coward to become an all out action star while he is young and able to do it all? Is he just plain dumb? Does he even want to be the next big action star? ESCAPE TO WITCH MOUNTAIN doesn't look bad, but it's a friggin kids film. I have nothing against them since I do enjoy well made ones...but WTF! Dwayne should be making hard action films like QUANTUM OF SOLACE, not baby kids films with action in them. He might have a huge hit with MOUNTAIN, but how long can that last. Vin Diesel is smarter doing films like THE FAST AND THE FURIOUS 4 and XXX 3.

Tom York did it first in a music video featuring a bum getting hit by cars in a tunnel. Then the fantastic four, then superhero movie, and now this movie. I'm sure another film did it as well. Very tired and abused film effect. Car really hits a grounded pole, and the pole is digitally erased/replaced with the actor.

The original is an OK film, but simple and kind of crude in terms of FX. And, it couldn't decide if it was serious SF or a kid's film, so the tone was real uneven. This looks like a Roswell with a bigger budget. Might not suck!

The Rock did Scorpion King, The Rundown, Waling Tall and Doom. Then, he started branching out in Be Cool, and has further branched out to do comedy. Here is a man who has transformed himself from wrestler, to action star to an actor who can do both action, and great comedy. Why would you want to typecast him? Why would anyone want to do that to themself? Vin did Find Me Guilt in an effort to branch out. It didn't do that well, but I thought he was great in it. Dwayne and Vin are better actors than Sly, not writers or directors mind you, but actors in that they can do not just action and do it well. Sly could only pull off action as an actor, but he does it incredibly well. Actually I take that back, he can't do pure drama, but there was a good amount of drama in Rocky Balboa that he handled well.

Disney is pretty smart, make a reasonably exciting action movie that the whole family can go see, and you just made bank. Dad's will be willing to take their kids to this, and if you can get them to go, you have a bunch of others as well.

Only question, why release this in March, that's a dead zone, but this has National Treasure audiences written all over it.

For one thing, having an adult with kids makes the kids less conspicuous. Also, if they are aliens, they may need help navigating some basic culture stuff ... he is a streetwise cabbie who probably has valuable information on how to go from A to B. Finally, never forget that it is always to have extra allies so there are more targets for the bad guys to shoot at. The guys chasing them are more likely to fire at the big dumb cabble, thereby letting the kids get away. Never throw away a resource, until you need to (Cannon Fodder). :)

What is it with movies recently?
by Breotan
Nov 18th, 2008
11:26:31 AM
I remember the old Witch Mountian as having a charm or emotional warmth to it. You cared about the people in the movie. This "remake" doesn't really show any of that. In fact, a lot of movies recently have been big on eye-candy but have the emotional depth of a bucket of nails. Kim Richards had a vulnerability about her that made you care about two kids on the run. AnnaSophia seems distant with an almost android-like coldness. While the Rock has a few one-liners, he just doesn't have the charm that Eddy Albert had. This version appears to be more along the lines of Clockstoppers. A movie that you appreciate as being family fun, but not something that's going to fill us with a sense of nostalgia for the actors or the characters portrayed.

Johnson deserves better. Superman deserves better. He deserves an actor that can move the franchise ahead. Modernize it. One that can offer elements to Clarks upbringing that some white guy never could. Elements that would improve his origin. Make his struggle to not abuse his power even greater. That and the fact that no one, and I mean NO ONE, is as electrifying as Mr.Johnson.

He is the perfect man for the role. And should be considered.

I liked Copland. I don't think it was enough to make me think of Sly as a pure dramatic actor though, but I would like to see more. Oh he was good, don't get me wrong. He's a great writer, but action is his main thing. I didn't see Oscar, or Stop or My Mom will shoot, but I hear bad things. Still, it was pretty ballsy for Sly to appear in one scene in Stop wearing a diaper in some sort of dream/fantasy sequence. In general I'm just saying Dwayne is more well rounded. He's nailed action and comedy. I don't know how he'd do in drama.

He has this feeling like...eh. He's phoning it in. Maybe it was the vibe from the trailer. But if he was going for a Jamie Foxx/Max Collateral vibe albeit Cabbie mixed up in craziness it seems to be failing. I don't get the Close Encounters From the Third Kind vibe of wonder like Dreyfus had. I know he says "You guys dont look like aliens." But maybe they should have. Because the only other actor who could pull off what he's trying to do would have been Will Smith. Calm placed charisma. I dunno maybe it's the trailer but not looking forward to this.

I wasn't expecting to want to see this or care. I loved the original as a kid but figured this would just be a remake with nothing behind it. This trailer has me sort of sold though. I'll reserve judgment, and I doubt I'll see it in theaters, but this looks like it will be a great film for children and have a similar effect as the original did for me years ago. It's a kids movie, so we older folks aren't the group that should like it. That being said there is a lot to like in that trailer. It doesn't look like it's played for laughs or camp. I like that things seem to be fairly serious. Hopefully Disney will do right by the original.

Really, it looks good-Dwayne, super powered kids... and seemingly much more coherency than that godawful Star Trek trailer (why can't I stop hating on that POS?) Carla Gugino-can't go wrong-Spy Kids 1 and 2 were really great live action kids films. I liked the grim opening-makes me remember the old nasty Disney flicks that I still cherish from being a child. Unlike trek, it looks like a faithful reboot/reimagination. Action, leads you may have sympathy with-good dialogue. Looks like fun, -MLB P.S. I'm a fan of the originals, and my first reaction is that the kids are awfully powered up. The way they've reworked the premise (the kids know they're aliens from the beginning and have full control of their powers), this is clearly going to be a big, loud effects movie without the paranormal mystery and creepy undertones of "Escape to Witch Mountain." Oh well.
Totally ruined the plot
by mos6507

The whole idea of the original film was that the main characters were orphans who were having a hard time finding a place in the world. They were trying to remember where they came from and they bonded with the loner character of Eddie Albert. There are universal themes there. The aliens were just visitors who wanted to keep a low profile and didn't want to get in anybody's way. Now it's just an alien invasion thriller. They shouldn't have even tried to piggyback on the franchise, but that's Hollywood these days.

I'm right there with you - I think she's one of the hottest women in the business. But this movie? Come on! Rock totally looks like he has the same expression in every scene. And he's bored. Plus, this completely shits on the original movie and the book. The whole point about these kids was that they DIDN'T know they were aliens. They were just misunderstood loners who had weird powers and everyone was either afraid of them or trying to use them. If everyone knows 'Witch Mountain' is all about aliens, why isn't it called 'Alien Mountain'? The point is that the kids were called 'witches' because they had these powers they didn't understand. And finding out that they were aliens and in the end were welcomed by their own people, was really just a metaphor for becoming part of an accepting community - there was little to no science fiction element about the book at all. This whole action adventure scifi thing is so far away from the book it's laughable. The original film is one of my earliest cinematic memories (I'll never forget the opening titles with the drawings of the dogs). And I loved the book, which was even more disturbing and creepy than the movie. This is so different they might as well call it something else.

Because the Witch Mountain trailers gives us the Gugino goodness the Watchmen trailer deprived us of. This new version seems like a fun kids/action movie. I have no memory of the original, I know I've seen them as a kid but that's it. I remember seeing Watcher in the Woods when I was like 6 and it bored the hell out of me, but I couldnt tell you a damn thing about it.

I'm impressed!!! I loved the original and it's sequels...but I thought this would be a mess. I am glad to say that they got it right!!! But the Star Trek Trailer, is just horrible!!!

He looks familiar, but fatter than I remember? I wish The Rock would do another action flick like The Rundown. That was awesome.

I agree that AnnaSophia Robb's "alien" acting

detracts. We need to empathize with the characters whether they're human or animal or toys, whatever, and her robot voice is distancing. Jeff Bridges could pull off robotic, alien acting in Starman, but as much respect as I have for Robb as a great child actor (Sleepwalking), she ain't no Jeff Bridges.

The Rock owned that night. He was still a wrestler then. I have NEVER laughed so hard watching SNL. Every sketch he was in was great. Even one as basic as Nick O'Trell. "You don't talk to Nick O'Trell like that." Even McMahon, as annoying as he can be was great doing the intro.

It's taken me a while to forgive the Rock for "Southland Tales". But this might do the trick.

...and everytime I see her on TV or in a movie I picture those tits. They were beautiful and so very touchable. She will not be topless in this movie, so I will not see it. I hope Carla realizes that she needs to be topless again on film and she needs to do it soon. Oh, I think the Rock will be in the Shazam movie...

I gotta agree with the critics who're saying this doesn't seem to have the charm, warmth, or heart of the original. What made the original work was how it started off as a very small story (two kids in an orphanage with a few powers) and built up into a much bigger story by the end. By starting small, you got an emotional attachment to the characters AND the big reveal at the end seemed that much bigger. Judging from this trailer, this flick goes big from the very beginning. So, if the first act is already big, where does the movie go from there? Pacing is important. One thing this trailer did do was make me want to see the original again.

Even as a kid, I thought the original Withc Mountain movies were lame (even though my own Uncle portayed the sherrif). This looks like it is going to suck even more. They can throw all the slick FX they want into it, but this looks like it is going to be nothing but one formulaic cliche after another.

Naked prisoner in SIN CITY, she's down with that. Jet Li's Buddhist wife who doesn't even have a real name in THE ONE, she can play it. Robert De Niro's BDSM fucktoy in RIGHTEOUS KILL, no problem. She is committed, y'all. I like Dwayne Johnson too. He is a fine actor who got used and abused horribly by Richard Kelly in that piece of shit SOUTHLAND TALES. He deserves better. But this looks fun.

Good family fare. However, I do tire of the grossly overused "big bad government/alien" thing. Sigh. Oh, well.
