Thanks Moriarty. This is the one film, apart from Avatar, that I'm looking forward to most in 2009. Where the Wild Things Are is my favorite book from my childhood. Jonze is so great and it's music to my ears to learn that WB has let him release the film the way he wants. And the pics are just icing on the cake! October can't come quick enough!

I am looking foward to this,Spike has only done 2 features but 2 awesome features at that. My only problem so far is it looks like there just on some island,it doesnt look heavyly stylized like in the book.With CGI it could look exactly like the book and since its half CGI anyway it could of captured the book to a T. Anyway im still stooked for this.

Haven't we seen enough CGI for things like this? I really miss the techniques used in 80's movies, where the objects are actually right there in front of the actor, and not added later via a green screen. Having these characters created with CGI would make this project rather soulless. I'm very glad that Spike has decided to go with actual furry monsters on the set...

It's all in the execution and to what degree the effect has on your suspension of disbelief. I think it's disingenuous to assume that, as LordPorkington said, "...characters created with CGI would make this project rather soulless." I can think of just as many projects done with practical effects that made me say, "that's a cute effect", but still removed me from the narrative as I can CGI effects that did not upset the flow of the story -- or even further immersed me in the tale.

...Sendak interviewed once and he was talking about the fact that the story ends with Max finding his dinner and "...it was still hot". His editor apparently wanted to change it to "warm" instead, but Sendak insisted that it had to be "still hot". Apart from just sounding better, I think the idea is that dinner represents his mom's love...so after having his big wild tantrum (as represented by the Wild Things and the Wild Rumpus) he can calm down again and his mom will still love him. So dinner can't just be tepid or lukewarm...it has to be hot. Also, for Max this isn't really the same night...he has been on a long long journey...the returning hero should at least get supper.

I love the first still at the end of the interview. It conveys so much and yet has the feel of the book. Sendak's work is what made me want to be an artist as a child. This interview is great because it wakes up those same basic emotions I had as a kid reading the book. God I hope they nailed it.

...the fact that I transcripted this interview makes me sort of biased, but I think it's completely fascinating. I don't understand the whole thing about Moriarty's questions not being succint enough. The whole point of this interview is that it's a CONVERSATION; if it wasn't conducted in the way that it was than a lot of the most interesting information some of you guys were looking for would never have had a chance to be expressed. And I loved hearing Spike's comments about how long it took to edit and the process of getting the suits to act retroactively; it's all really fascinating, and regardless of whether Wild Things is an "epic" or not, it sounds like a movie that I'd love to see. Thank you for the interview Mr. Jonze, and thank you Moriarty for conducting it.
