...but then I realized I liked the idea of Tim Burton movies better than what he came up with! His movies don't age well and aside from being quirky, they aren't terribly original and don't tell stories I haven't experienced before. I must confess that Pee Wee's Big Adventure is my favorite of his films in terms of pure entertainment but his serious efforts miss the mark (and I will never forgive him for the awful Planet of the Apes remake... they didn't need to make a remake, they just needed more Ape movies...) To be fair, I haven't seen Sweeny Todd and want to, but I do hope for the day when his films meet my expectations...

Sick of his self-indulgent, go-nowhere stories. Sick of his "look how creepy I am" attitude. Sick of his choices of same-old-same-old makeup, costumes, and film scores. Sick of his need to have EVERYTHING be a "re-imagining" in his style.

Seriously. Burton's "style" is nothing more than a hollow & shallow mimicry of his greatest earlier efforts. He's going through the motions now.

And Depp.... Awesome actor. However, he's pigeon-holed himself by sticking with Burton. Depp does some wonderful eccentric characters, but he's also capable of more ... normal stuff. Anybody remember him in "Nick of Time" with Walken? I want to see more of THAT Depp - intense without being odd. Under Burton's direction, he's turning into a one note player.

Also the film isn't coming out till March 2010.

Nov 17th, 2008
11:43:14 PM
It looks completely unremarkable. It's so thrown together it almost feels like Burton had Depp done up like this and had the picture taken to throw people off how he'll really look, something completely un burtonesque. The Pirates movies seem to be a psychological experiment in actor saturation. Take a likeable actor and character (Depp) and see how much they can overexpose them until audiences actually wretch at the sight of them. I now hate Jack Sparrow with a passion and might find myself hating Depp if it weren't for a little movie called Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas. Depp, the children's entertainer is about in the realm of Pee-Wee Herman, adults find him grating but maladjusted kids can build their entire childhoods off impersonating him. There's an idea, Burton. Get a deal with Paul Reubens to have Depp play the Wee. A handsome Pee Wee for a new generation.

That synopsis someone posted in a talkback a while back sounded stupid as hell. The one where this is a "sequel" to Wonderland and how The Hatter and Alice are star crossed lovers or some shit. Stupid as hell. I have no problem with Burton using Depp as his surrogate, but enough with the big budget mastubatory wish fulfillment fantasies already. We get it. You're a misunderstood outcast. I'm going to come down on the side of very fake..the photoshopper does a so so job conveying a Burton-esque vision of the Mad Hatter but the shadowing and expression is wrong...and it's rather dull and tired from a costuming perspective. I'm going with fake.

we hadn't already seen Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd, Willy Wonka, and all of Burton's other pale faced creatures. I won't 100% say it sucks until I see the look in the movie. I just hope he makes this darker than Willy Wonka seemed it was going to be.

Burton shamed me out of being goth.

I was "goth" when it wasn't called "goth" and instead we were just "alternative" or "new romantics" or "gothic rockers" or even "goth-punk". Back in the early 80s, when shit like Hot Topic was just a bad nightmare for a truly alternative person-- When Marilyn Manson and Vampire The Masquerade didn't exist. When this was truly unique and interesting...

And we loved Beetlejuice. We loved Pee Wee's Big Adventure. And then Burton thought he could keep milking that ideal and pushing his self-indulgent crap on audiences, and we started to become embarrassed. We wore less makeup. We leaned away from goth because guys like Burton and Marilyn Manson were fucking ruining it for us, making us look like chumps.

They took all the creativity and individual spirit out of goth, and then Hot Topic came along and drove the last nail into goth's coffin, more than a decade after its official death (which was in 1989, when MTV and America's Top 40 started playing the Cure and Siouxsie & the Banshees and people who used to ridicule them now said "Ohmigod, they're like, so cool!")

Now, Burton's this overplayed, tired hack that keeps trying to make it seem like the goth audience gives a shit about his work, when only the most pretentious posers flock to him these days. He's one of the most embarrassing things about goth. He never evolved, never grew, never became any more than the same tired cliches. He dragged goth's image down with him, and now it lies rotting somewhere underneath emo, but a few feet above above disco, in a hole in the back alleys of Los Angeles, where it had been kidnapped, tarted up, and raped repeatedly by the usual suspects in the entertainment industry.

If Burton had an ounce of dignity, he'd stop trying to make re-imagined gothy versions of classics, and go back to making original films in a completely different, somewhat normal style.

"Oh, my! Edward! Your ribs are just divine" "Thank you." Seriously, the guy who said Mad Hatter should be a villain in the Nolan-verse Batman, you're fucking retarded. And my vote on this is fake. I also vote Who Gives a Fuck, I'm tired of Tim Burton's predictable aesthetics.

are all Burton movies weird looking? Some call it stylish and in the beginning they were different enough to be deemed stylish but seriously-- shouldn't he move on and change things up? Both Batman movies were weird (first one cool in its own way second one sucked balls), Edward Scissorhands was bizarre, Nightmare, Sweeney, Corpse, Willy all feel the same even if they look a little different... It's like Oliver Stone's inability to get away from the "symbolic flashes" of the Doors, Natural Born, JFK, and others... Do something different. Stop beating a dead horse. And American McGee's Alice already "Gothed" this story awhile back...

...YEah, dude, feel your pain. It is sad what's happened to Burton. Although, thankfully, I was NEVER "goth"... I was just another ratbag who liked the Ramones, the Clash, the Stranglers, Black Flag, Dead Kennedys, etc... Then later, in college, Pixies, Sonic Youth, Butthole Surfers, the Mekons, etc. But Burton used to be cool... and suddenly sometime in the 90s, got lame fast. Every once in a while he tries to pull out of it (Big Fish, Sweeney Todd), but never quite succeeds.

Straight out gothic horror ... that should be what Burton is doing next. Instead he's cashing paychecks doing drivel like "Alice in Wonderland". I see that he's going to be doing "Dark Shadows" at some point ... and that's great ... I hope he does straight horror more. Things like Frankenweenie are fun and all, but comedy/horror that has classic Universal Pictures nods makes me just long for a classic horror that plays it straight.

...getting excited about Tim Burton movies. His last good one was Sleepy Hollow (which is being generous), his last great one was Ed Wood. The only people I know who liked Sweeney Todd have not seen the musical. The movie is okay, but only because the play is so good no one could completely fuck it up. To me, if you haven't made one good movie post-2000, it's time to give it up. And don't get me started on Big Fish, which was a movie full of squandered potential.

that people bitch about an eyelash being out of place when things like harry potter or watchmen are being adapted, but then marvel at this shit design since it came from Tim Burton? thats NOT what the damn hatter looked like. This has just gone to far, im not as outraged by the design as much as i am the positive response it has garnered. WAKE UP! I'd thought most people have read the book, this is something that was designed by a 16 year old goth girl, its shite. This fucker would scare the piss outta me if i ran into him. Burton needs to deflate that big ass head of his and try to put out a decent adaption rather than Burtonizing the whole thing, art is about being bold, he's been too safe casting the same people over and over. 'cuse the typos or whatever
