John Carpenter? The legendary John Carpenter?

The man who could take a small budget and create a kick-ass classic film and make it look effortless. The guy who used to be my favorite director with perfect films like Halloween, The Fog, Escape From New York and Big Troble In Little China? I heard he was taken over by a talentless old hack who not only lost his eye, but his vision as well. I'm beginning to think that without Debra Hill as his producer, the guy will never come back. The new Carpenter even pisses on his old classics by selling off the rights for shitty remakes. RIP John Carpenter.......

Robert Altman was sixty-four when he got back in the game with VINCENT AND THEO (and look at his run from QUINTET to TANNER '88 - not pretty). Carpenter just needs some material that kicks him in the ass. A nihilistic gangster movie could do the trick.

If I know Talkbacks, this will get real nasty, real quick. John is my film hero. I went to WKU because he went there. The man has had a rough career, besieged on all sides by fans and critics alike all the way. The films we all consider classics, outside of HALLOWEEN, were pretty much spit on and kicked around by the fans and critics alike during their theatrical releases. THE THING got the worst of it. I remember. I was there. And he remembers too. Nobody got BIG TROUBLE during its theatrical run. THE FOG was bombed. ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK was panned. ASSAULT ON PRECINT 13 snubbed. He should be bitter. Any of us would be bitter. There is no director alive today that deserves a comeback more than John Carpenter, and hopefully one that won't have to wait 20 years to see any appreciation.

Old West Alien Invasion flick in 3D

11:00:50 PM
I'd love to see John make a old Western/Alien Invasion flick. Shoot it in 3d. Have that Touch of Evil and it Came from Outerspace shit about it. Something from space crashes near a small western town. A deafening boom and large blinding flash illuminates the night sky. The Sheriff and some men go out to the crash area to investigate it. When they come back. It's obvious that they are possessed. The remaining town tries to kill This possessed Posse. No fucking chance in hell! A kid escapes on horse back. He confronts a loner living secluded in the hills. This Loner is known for his gun and bare handed fighting skills. He begs him to go back to the town to kill this evil before it infects the world. Something like that.

Always wanted to see John do a Western...

Is the development of an Alien Gangster Genre. I would see the feel to be like Blade Runner, and great kooky characters that you could find from the casino scene in Star wars. Some Aliens would have lEEt talents like being able to assassinate while others with big heads would be the bosses because they would be smart. There would be fish aliens who would take other alien gangster to their doom under water and possible fornicate with them in weird 70s style gritty film shots with The Bangles Eternal Flame playing in the background. Cameos by E.T. or other world famous aliens would be a must.

my dad is fucking 61, and he rides his bike all over the city for fun. Carpenter shouldn't be in a hurry. if this project is worthwhile, and it sounds like it is, let it marinate and hopefully come to fruition. he doesn't need to make The Thing again, he just needs a hit to get him back into the realm where he can make what he wants. get a couple of A-list actors signed on, and this will definitely get made, and then it's off to the races!

which was such a love letter to Carpenter's EFNY (the intro, the title font, the music), that Carpenter needed a kick ass script and a decent budget and he could knock one out of the park again. Those one-offs for Masters Of Horror don't count, he was just keeping his beak wet. Lets hope this is the one. He is the last of the genre kings of the seventies to hang hope on. Hooper..sorry. Dante..where are you (I know about his next project tho)? Romero..stuck in zombieland. Cronenberg...doing excellent work, but has abandoned the "new flesh". DePalma...waiting for a return to glory.

so I'll just echo previous sentiments. Carpenter used to be so stellar, I'll still see any garbage he puts out there (and yes, everything since Escape from LA has been garbage). The man created truly original and badass flicks: Assault on Precinct 13, Halloween, The Thing (ooooh, so good!), Big Trouble, Escape from New York, In the Mouth of Madness, Prince of Darkness... (I think some people should go rewatch the Fog though, that was a misstep. Just some real poor stuff in that one). And dear god, NO NICHOLAS CAGE! When was the last time that guy was in anything watchable? Adaptation, maybe? Reuniting Carpenter with fucking badass Kurt Russell is the best idea ever.

if Carpenter were allowed to make the movie he wanted. Originally, he cast Jason Statham as Desolation Williams, but Statham wasn't a star yet so the studio FORCED him to cast Ice Cube. Carpenter went over Ice Cube's house to meet with him only to have to first have a 15 minute "session" with his handlers telling him how he should address the rapper. Never call him Ice or Ice Cube or Mr. Cube; only refer to him as Cube. Then Courtney Love was supposed to play the lead, but dropped out one week prior to shooting and had to be replaced by Natasha Henstridge at the last minute. Who knows how that might have worked or not worked. Massive studio tinkering followed. I still believe, if Carpenter were allowed a badass anti-hero to play Desolation Williams instead of "Cube," the results might have been better.

A world where John Carpenter knocked out a movie every couple of years would indeed be a brighter place. Give him a low-mid budget and a decent cast and watch the magic fly. What's shocking is the huge amount of horror/sci-fi films being made by hacks and turning over a decent profit, the majority of the being remakes or bland asian rehashes. You have one of the greatest genre directors wanting to work and no interest. Why hasn't Sam Raimi's horror company signed him up or Lionsgate or New LIne, the man even has his own original ideas to film. And when he starts to make films again perhaps he can coax Rob Bottin out of selling timeshares or whatever the fuck he is doing now. Maybe he just needs a new producing partner or something. I'm a fan so I'm biased, but the man made at least five of my all time favourite films, and some of them even made money lol :)

btw Skimm - you left out Friedkin! How could you leave out Billy Friedkin! Now THERE'S one for the where-are-they-now files...

Oh yeah...

You're saying that based on what? the scores of good reviews? The Academy Awards, the film itself. It's pretty much recognized as one of the great modern Westerns. Your subjective opinion that it's over-rated is just that YOUR opinion.

this TB was higher up the Talkback chart. During a certain stage of my life, Carpenter's output was essential. Assault On Precinct 13 - Halloween - The Fog - Escape From New York - The Thing... He couldn't miss at one point.

Christine is underrated, I think, as is They Live and Prince Of Darkness. Dropped in between those, the tremendous Big Trouble In Little China.

I still think he's got a corking movie left in him somewhere. If a studio took a chance and gave him a decent budget, I'd warily embrace a Thing 2.

Also, although this TB appears to be done and dusted already, I'd just like to say I'm honoured being on the same TB as the mighty triumvirate of Lost Jarv, DocPazuzu & Mr. Nice Gaius whose wholesale slaughter of AvP apologists several months ago filled my heart with pride. I thank yow. Again.

Glad to see the Carp love. I love almsot all of his shit, but I drew the line at those piss awful episodes of "Masters of Horror." Totally beneath him, the writers should be shot. So pedestrian.
Do it!

John Carpenter - the COOLEST auteur in films.

When I look at my DVD shelves there is only one section in which I have filed the films according to their director (the rest are filed alphabetically for easy access - which proves that I need to get a life). :-( Anyway, that director is John Carpenter. I have enjoyed every one of his films (yes, some more than others), and the man can truly be called an auteur. He can write, direct, and even score his own movies. How many other directors can make that claim? I mean, seriously... the man gave us Michael Myers, Jack Burton and Snake Plissken. How much cooler can you get?
no way is the orginal Thing cheesy!

I can only think of Robert Rodriguez as being as "all-in-one", even moreso. But I think even Robert wishes he could be Carpenter.

The Thing From Another World ain't cheesy!

Solid Sf. Fast shooting dialogue, typical Hawks. Check out the Carpenter commentary on the recent DVD release.

That shot of Stevie Wayne's car coming toward us. The camera does a leisurely 180 pan across the bay - and back to Stevie's car, now heading away from us. Simple but effective. Gives a real sense of place.

Also, walking down the steps to the lighthouse while the radio ads are playing on the soundtrack. Just the sense of isolation - and impending danger.

Quality.
