Seriously, this is what happens when you hire Enterprise writers. Just like pretty much everything that happened last season, another layer of artificiality that adds nothing to the story. "Started hearing Bob Dylan" is the new "jumped the shark."

This is what gets your juices flowing about this show? They'll reveal two gay characters in a webisode?

Search your feelings people! Is there any part of you that still remembers what this show was like in Season 1? And early Season 2?

Can't you see how far you've fallen?

If the you then, who'd just seen Adama get shot by Boomer, could see the you now, getting your knickers in a twist over the outing of two gay fictional characters in a webisode, don't you think the old you would feel ashamed? Embarrassed?

I mean, Whatever. Frankly, I don't get the reason for introducing this as a plot element THIS late in the game. Cash907 basically nailed it when he said in a post above: "Is there really a POINT in discussing the sexuality of these characters anyway?" And that's really what it comes down to. If their gayness is going to have some sort of MAJOR impact on the resolution of the series and its overall storyline that's one thing. Otherwise given the show's falling ratings and forthcoming cancellation and conclusion, it just feels like a cheap plot ploy that got tossed in to make the show politically correct or worst of all, to generate some quick media attention -- or even a media debate if the characters are actually going to be seen "full-out making out" as this article notes -- all in an effort to temporarily prop up the ratings for the last season.

I mean seriously, why are they bringing up their sexuality this late in the game? If it was such a character defining thing for these mysterious "two recurring characters", then why wasn't it introduced as a plot point earlier on? I guess we'll have to wait and see, but it already sounds like they're reaching a little bit as they wrap things up. It just reminds me of when J.K. Rowling decided that she just had to be politically correct, so she suddenly announced to all the world that Dumbledore was actually gay -- which of course was never mentioned IN any of the books, and of course she only decided to announce it AFTER they were all done and had been sold, when she had nothing to lose by announcing things. Much like with BATTLESTAR now being cancelled, where they have nothing to lose by doing certain things so long as it will generate media attention, good or bad, and thus help the ratings.

I'm not like jebuslovesyou66 who has some kind of beef with homosexuals and how they express their values. I just think this smacks of sensationalism and doesn't really add anything to this already over-melodramatic television show, especially since the show is heading for its conclusion and doesn't need to add some ridiculous soap opera mainstay this late in the game. And Dumbledore being gay is just a detail, it didn't have anything to do with the narrative and had no point being explicated in the text, but fits nonetheless. Dumbledore wasn't going to say "I'm gay, Harry," despite the fact the kids in these books use the word "berk," which is slang for "cunt."

Listen, I know we should all go back to having 7 wives or some shit in your book, but in the BSG world reality is reflected in how human beings behave, and newsflash for you: there have always been and always will be gay people involved in every situation ever. There were gay dudes who fought in WWII, gay dudes who helped take down mastodons, gay dudes in NASA. I knew a gay Air Force dude... He said there were tons of down low fags in the armed forces.

That we have to be homophobes, when we're just discussing how lame trivial it is to have to 2 characters be gay. You can call me whatever you like, and keep in mind I don't really care if someone is gay or not, but I do however find it absolutely vile to watch two guys making out. Its GAY, I'm not gay, So I do not find it interesting in the least to have gay characters in my favorite show. I think Ron Moore is a closet homosexual for even writing this into his show. Why would a straight man want anything to do with this? Ron Moore and that beard and hair, we should have seen this coming.

For one thing, the writers of BSG have always had a problem writing anything even remotely related to romance or sexuality. Most of the time the romance on this show has felt very forced and the actors have appeared quie uncomfortable doing the scenes. For example, every scene that even hints at Cain and Gina's romance is just plain awkwardly written and acted (not to mention retconned into Razor), and how about Lee and Kara? Awkward as hell. Even worse is Boomer's declaration that a hybrid baby can only be born through love. Sheesh, talk about corny and awkward.

So now we get to watch two dudes act through a gay love scene written by the people who can't even get straight romance right? Worse yet, this is so obvioulsy shoe-horned in for no other reason than PC bullshit, so expect more weirdness like "Gee Chief, I love you even more now that you've bashed my face in!!!" WHEEEE!!!

So much repressed sexual consternation and rage in this TB. Sorry to break it to you, fellas, but gay people exist in the real world. And don't pull that lame "why do they have to get into their sexuality in the show" business. Using that logic, you'd never see a scene between a man and a woman who were attracted to each other.

First of all, Ron Moore has said in the past in interviews that he felt the lack of gay characters was a flaw of the show. Obviously he wants the fleet to be a microcosm of life - which does include gay people. So, yes, they are including this now late in the game, but perhaps it is not just a stunt but an acknowledgment to the gay community (who do watch this show by the way) that they are not forgotten. And I for one hope the scene in question is something low key and sweet that just shows two people who have found each other amidst all the horrible drama that they are a part of in BSG. Sure it may not advance the final plot, but (like so many great episodes on BSG) it shows another parallel dynamic that's going on that is not as noticeable, but is still valid. And it DOES add something to the complex picture they have created with this show. If we can have humans and Cylons working together to find Earth, I think we can allow two men to find some happiness together. So chill out. And if you really have a problem with it, just don't watch the webisodes.

First of all, I am a right-winger. I am have far more conservative view points than liberal. Yet, I still frequent this website, go figure... So it will be revealed that Galactica has a couple of dudes amoung the crew....who cares? Really. Big Frackn' Deal. If it is relevant to the story line, fine. Okay. If it is a cheap ploy to garner higher ratings, that's just lame. Gay people are everywhere, they always have been and always will be. Should we be surprised that a gay couple turns up on Galactica, I think not. Personally, if a Cylon were about to dust me, I wouldn't give two squirts of pi$$ about the sexuality of the person who might be in a position to save me. I have gay friends and clients. I have no problem with them. We have a lot in common, just not our sexual preferences. I still respect them though, otherwise, we wouldn't be friends. They do not try to "indoctrinate" me, nor I them. Quite simply put, I am not threatened by them. I am certainly not threatened by a couple of homosexuals showing up on Galactica. I think it would be a disservice to the fans though, if the underlying "Gay" plot were to detract from the overall focus of the story. My wife and I enjoyed "Will and Grace". That show as very funny. Sexuality was the core of that show. We knew what to expect when we tuned in. Let's face it, I tune in to Battlestar Galactica to see space ships, space battles and space $hit getting blown up, not to see a couple of space gays makin' out when they should be kicking Cylon ass! The soap-opera stuff I could do without. I will reserve judgement until I actually see how the topic fits into the context of the last season. Who knows, maybe it will work out fine. To all those that feel threatened by homosexuals, let me say this, they aren't going away anytime soon. Respect them, and they will respect you. You won't turn gay simply befriending a homosexual, I haven't.

People used to get upset over black folks sitting next to them on the bus too, people, to be fair are pretty dumb en mass.

The press release said there would be kissing?, I thought it said gay characters, hubba hubba I hope it is Hotdog and Lee, they frak nightly in my head.

Show what the show was about, basically to advertise it.

you might have only been watching for the space battles, but the show has always featured and explored so called 'soap opera' elements of sex, romance and human (or pseudo-human) relationships in testing times very prominently, so I don't see how it could be a disservice to the fans to continue that.

to have a show be gay-free? I am absolutely disgustingly sick to death of "where are the gay characters?" BS from the peanut gallery. It would be so refreshing to see a TV show say "we don't need to bow down to you, gaybots, our show is fagless!" Seriously, no one wants or cares!!

You're right. I do love the space battles though, when they occur, they are spectacular! I would prefer more of that. For a television show, the effects are amazing. Better than those of some movies in my humble opinion. I miss the Pegasus and Admiral Cain, she was one bad-a$$ leader!

Star Trek guilt?

Is this pointless gay reveal happening because of lingering guilt among the ex-Trek writers that they or Paramount never had the balls to have undisguised gayness on 80s-90s Star Trek? The only way this is worth it for BSG is if they're going to show a bad character who's more bigoted against gays than Cylons, to sort of comment on how the US military kicks out translators they need for antiterrorism, just because they're gay.

TV like this should reflect who we are. What if I said... they shouldn't include people with red hair? RED HAIR IS NOT A CHOICE. Cue the red-hair bigots...

It bothers me because it's an obvious stunt to try and grab headlines and ratings. This is exactly the same as stunt casting or the lead getting pregnant and/or married when ratings are down. It smacks of desparation.

Seriouly think about the previous webisode announcements, the first was about a insurgent/resistance movement on New Caprica, the second was about Husker and the First War, and now we get Lt. Gaeta and Lt. Hoshi are gonna be macking on each other? Out of what effed up left field did this come from?

In replying to my post, you said: "Will someone please point out to this tool that the show wasn't canceled, but reached its conclusion? I mean, really, if it's ending due to cancellation, can he find somewhere to back this up?!?

Okay, fine, if it will make me less of a "tool" then the show wasn't technically cancelled, it's "reaching its conclusion." There, does a fucking change of words make you feel better now? Will you be able to hold your teddy bear tonight and go to sleep peacefully? And does a change in words in any way, shape, or form change the fact that the series is ending? For crying out loud, the only reason I said cancelled is because Sci-Fi was considering axing the show at one point since its ratings have been dropping consistently. So, fine, they all reached an agreement behind the scenes on a timeline for wrapping it up, which basically means in Hollywood terms it was a backroom negotiated cancellation to save face all around. But hey, it's all good -- now you can walk around in a Zen-like state knowing that BSG is "reaching its conclusion."

For fuck's sake, some people need to SERIOUSLY de-stress about things.

And stop the homophone shit -- BOTH sides

I have no problem with gays. I have good, close friends who are gay -- not that I should need to define myself or my levels of social tolerance by even saying that. I hate that fucking crap. The bottom line is that gays exist, we all know some (be it friends, family, or whoever) so let's try to be a little more tolerant in life, shall we? There's nothing wrong with showing some respect towards a fellow human being.

On the other hand, in terms of this new plotline for BSG, I agree with many of the posts here and stand by what I said myself earlier. This is not about being anti-gay or being a homophobe, so people on the other end of things should stop flinging around those names and labels and those accusations TOO. That's utter bullshit as well. There's a perfectly legitimate argument behind simply saying "WTF? Where did this storyline come from?" this late in the show and with such a limited amount of time left to spotlight certain things or to wrap up certain plot elements.

In simple terms, here's the way I see it: with the limited time left -- even when it comes to what you could detail in a webisode off to the side -- what's more important to you: finding out Gaeta is gay or maybe answering some fucking questions that the show has yet to address this far in? Seriously, if you had to draw up a list of the things you'd like to see in the final set of episodes before the show goes off the air -- even in some webisodes off to the side -- how many of you REALLY had "I want to find out if Gaeta is gay" at the top of your list? Yeah, that's what I thought...

I think the storyline came from showing all aspects of humanity.

How is this badly relieved news an attempt to grab publicity?

Here is another way of looking at it, the show is ending, the people writing it want to show gay kind too so we get squeezed in some webisode so they can feel like they included everyone whilst in reality we are again consigned to half usage, did you bleat about lesbianism being used to further the show?, of course you never?, then fuck off spreading hate speech disguised as reasonable opinion, its transparent and has no place in 2008.

Yes in fact I did Smashing....
by Hairy Nutsack

I did "bleat" about the lesbianism when Razor aired, and also right here in this TalkBack in my first post. I "bleated" about it because it was poorly written, awkwardly acted, and obviously retconned.

Why is it that we can't have a reasonable discussion without some asshole shouting "hate speech" and homophobia? In what way is me calling this a "stunt" in any way homophobic or hateful? I'd say the same thing if they announced Dirk Benedict was showing up in the webisodes as Kara's Dad. A stunt is a stunt, and all stunts smell like desparation.

As BDA said, this is the important story/issue they need to tackle this close to the end with limited screen time left?

Is there celery involved?

I'm comming in late to the game here so bare with me, but i thought it was rather obvious that the first gay couple on Galactica were Gaeta and Hoshi considering the way that they were shot during their hug when the Galalctica found Earth. Both actors played it noticably differently to everybody else.
Limited time left?
by Sacredfun

Aren't there about 10 to 12 full episodes still coming? A lot can be covered in that time. And this is still a webisode we're talking about. And we don't even know for sure how much of it will even be about Gaeta and Hoshi. I doubt it will be a ten minute make out fest lit by candlelight. I don't think the limited time argument holds water when this really will be just a blip that might have a thread that continues here and there later on. Yes it's tacked on, perhaps. But I don't think it has come out of nowhere. Gaeta certainly hasn't been actively romantic with anyone before. And I still think the point is to show humanity as a complete picture, and that's all. I know it has come late, but I still think it's an interesting idea - especially if they discuss what it is like to be gay in this society (and a diminished one at that). And on a personal note to dibarahman and others who choose to use the word "fag" - rethink your choice. It is an offensive word that has no place in polite discourse. If you want to say a show has "gone gay" then say that. There's just no need for the "f" word.

Fuck it. Season 3 was horrendous, season 4 ignored what should have been the main thrust of the series at that point (the four). I stopped watching Buffy when Espenson took over and yet i want to see how this ends. Despite the latent racism and/or misogyny and lack of balls/ovaries i will continue to watch the series until the finale. I'm so weak.
I thought Cain and Six's romance added to the betrayal.

It also helped explain why Pegasuses C.O was so damn hard on her.

By definition of being added later of course it is a ret-con but it felt like it was an idea they had before they wrote season 2, maybe they just held it over to dvd to avoid upsetting people who dislike gays?

I don't mean to accuse you of hate speech, more just lazy thinking when it comes to people different to you.

You obviously have some sort of issue to get so wound up, though that alone is not enough to make you a hater, just not part of the solution.

I agree there Smashing....

Cain and Gina's romance did add to the betrayal, but in light of what had just happened to humanity was it even necessary to tack it on? Gina's rage at Cain was just as easily fueled by the months of rape and torture, likewise Cain's rage at Gina, and overall unbalanced state, could have been left at just the war in general and Cain's self perceived betrayal of her own sister on Tauron. I found the sister thing more intriguing than the romance, wish they would have explored that a bit.

If I'm wound up it's not because Gaeta is suddenly, definitely gay, it's because I hold BSG to an extremely high standard. Pulling a stunt of any kind is more than a little Shark Jumpish.

And more than anything, I'd like to reitterate that I've felt from the very begiining of the show that BSG has handled romance very. very poorly. Very few of the romantic moments have felt real to me, with the VERY notable exception of Adama and Roslin, but in fairness that may have more to do with the skill of the actors rather than the skill of the writers.

I'm still hoping it's Gaeta and the Marine dude

"Why do gays have to crammed down our throats!" Because gay people exist. They're doctors, lawyers, and in the military. We don't know how much of these webisodes are going to be about these characters personal lives, but anyone who watches this show for the space dogfights and action should probably switch over to Clone Wars...they have a sassy teenage sidekick and no gays to speak of! BSG has always been about the characters and the revelation that two of them are gay probably wont affect who the final cylon is or change the ending of the show.
