Comic Cartoons
by Mr.FTW
Nov 14th, 2008
11:12:03 AM
Hulk vs. Thor looks awesome mostly due to it being set in Asgard. That aspect of Thor is never exploited enough. For a cartoon that will rely heavily on action we don't need Donald Blake. Why does everyone hold the 90s X-Men cartoon as the gold standard, that show was awful. From the animation to the overly long and way overly convoluted story lines. Yes, it's cool they made it like the comics but the 90s X-Men comics were often a headache to read and that cartoon could be laborious to watch because of that. X-Men Evolution was a far superior show in terms of animation, fresh takes on the costume and character designs and a lot more character development. But people like to hate it because it wasn't a direct translation of the comics. I read the comics I don't need to see them redone in animated for. AS far as the people that whine about anime influence on the character design comic cartoons have needed that shot in the arm for a long time, the DCAU still needs it. It's doesn't have to be over the top, almost parody like the horrible Fantastic 4 cartoon that came out a couple of years ago where Johnny Storm had ridiculously spiky hair but some anime sensibilities work great with supeheroes. Shows like The Batman, Batman: Gotham Knight, Legion of Superheroes and Teen Titans at least gave something fresh from a visual stand point for those character. I know this is going to be blasphemy to some but I'm beyond tire of the Bruce Timm DCAU from BATS to the new Batman: Brave and the Bold it's been the same style for 16 years. JL, Superman: Doomsday, New Frontier and now Brave and the Bold took some side steps but never anything far from the Timm look. I'm not saying big eyes and spiky hair for everyone just something a little updated.

Why can't Marvel put out a good cartoon?

With the only exception being Spectacular Spider-Man, all of their endeavors suck ass. Why is that? Both ultimate Avengers movies were soulless and joyless spectacles. Dr. Strange was tripe and Iron-Man and Young Avengers isn't worth mentioning. Marvel was the first publisher to produce three dimensional, flawed characters, and yet, animation wise, DC is kicking their asses in producing well written narratives with witty, three dimensional characters. Being a Marvel boy growing up, it hurts me to see this crap. I remember getting into a debate on this board years ago when the first Ultimate Avengers cartoon debuted. I was told comparing Avengers to JLU wasn't fair because JLU had a few seasons to improve. My opinion was although the writing was raw the first season, you could still see the superior craft. Well, time has told. There is simply no reason marvels characters have been painted in such broad strokes in their animation forms, while the DCU characters are richly explored. Iv'e lost count of the times i've smiled at the screen watching Batman, and later, the JLU and have said, "yep, that's what Bruce/Clark/Wally would say..spot on". Shape up Marvel!

That was a great animated film made in 2006. Thor was great! not much on screen but he was perfect especially when he was fighting hulk. I think Marvel's animated films in recent years are far better than the live action movies. Check out Dr Strange, Invincible iron man, and Ultimate Avengers part 1 (part 2 is not as good). The New Avengers was also very enjoyable but set in an alternative universe where the Avengers have been killed by Ultron. Only Iron Man survives and protects the Avengers children who become the "new" Avengers. Cant wait now for Thor series and the movie Thor vs hulk.

First off, i don't know who mentioned it, but there is NO new Avengers cartoons, and secondly, i loved the X-Men Cartoon when i was younger just as much as anybody but i ask you all to go back and watch it now that your older, it does NOT stand the test of time, im sorry to say it but DC makes the best comic cartoons, they are the standard by which all others should be judged, Thor is my favorite comic character there is and JMS is really knocking it out of the park, this is the first time Thor has not seemed cheesy to me, i am very glad he dropped the Shakespearean speech, it made reading the old comics almost unbearable i think this new Thor seems VERY noble and i dont think Thor has ever looked this good.

IN volumes like Marvel Masterworks Vol. 4-6 of Thor (just like FF Masterworks V. 4-10 and the Captain American Vol. 3-4). This IS the stuff of comics legend. Simonson's Thor was probably the best take on it all until JMS' current run. The Ultimate's Thor? A variation on Millar's belief that all super-heros are assholes.

When the terrible animation of that show gets better and actually doesn't look like a console game for the Nintendo 64. I watch Little Einsteins with my daughter and the mouth movements look more realistic!
It is such a shame that Pixar and Disney ( I'm treating them separately ) apparently have a monopoly. No one in the USA can put out high quality TV animation. Not even Mr. Spend money on *anything* technology George Lucas, can create anything remotely good in animation. Why is that?
Watch a couple of episodes of Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in The Shell, Paranoia Agent, or Macross Frontier and then tell me Clone Wars is good with a straight face.

were true to comic book storylines, overall. Same with Fantastic Four (which got better better once they dumped the dopey theme song). They weren't on-par with BTAS, etc from DC end, but some the X-Men arcs (we have a stack of the VHS tapes), still hold up for kids, especially. The big question is why no boxed set DVDs of X-Men or Spider-Man or Iron Man or Hulk for that matter?

Because in actuality they are basically crudely animated Kirby panels, and Kirby is to comics what God is to the universe, and so the 60's toons use actual Kirby panels, not Kirby models or hacks trying to draw like Kirby, but the pages themselves and the pages are awesome, and so thus to are the 'toons, Kirby awesome. Wow. drop to lowest common denominator, huh? Lucas didn't do shit with Pixar. John Lasseter is the hero of Pixar, and the (sometimes reluctant) backer was Steve Jobs. George Lucas did not realize the power of his own creation, much like he treats Star Wars.
I am not an anime freak. I enjoy good animation of any source. I quite clearly say that Pixar and Disney produce good animation. I said no one else in the US does good TV animation.
Branch out a little bit. Anime is not a fixed genre. There is good and bad within it just like any other thing. Would it be fair to me to say I don't like American animation just because "American Dad" sucks?

I really enjoyed the actual Kirby drawings coming to life. It's funny that although Colan and Heck and others were also similarly "animated", only Kirby's looked like they were moving although they actually weren't. The MOST funny part of the cartoons is the spelled-out sound effects. Are "KER-AACK!" and "RUMBLE!" really necessary in a sound cartoon?

Sorry to come right out and say that, I've never insulted people on these boards, not once (as far as I can remember,) but reading your posts J.J. Binks, and seeing how you're insulting people left right and centre, I just couldn't help it.

And I'm not talking about the Pixar/lucas debate, I could care less. Thor is F#*ing Brilliant in The Ultimates and if they want a character that has broad appeal, they'll use the Ultimate Thor for the movie and the cartoon.

Everything about the Ultimate version of Thor is awesome. He kicked BUTT in Ultimates 2. He made a kick ass book even better. The costume is up to date, (no cape, no stupid helmet) and very simple. His mental state is intriguing and could make for a great film. (I fear they'll screw it up though.)

As I said, I've not insulted on these, or any, boards before, but just had to put in my two cents.

I await your raging response.

Fuck anyone picking on the Sixties cartoons!

I have a news flash and a reality check for some of you: that YouTube clip from the Sixties utilizing Stan Lee script and Jack Kirby's art -- as primitive as it was for just shaking the art and all -- STILL has FAR more grandeur and scope and emotion to it than that ultra shitty clip from that laughably bad HULK vs THOR direct to DVD bullshit.

Stan and Jack still own Marvel's ass! They'll NEVER be topped!

HAHAHA.... awesome

That was a lot more contained than I was expecting, J.J... Kudos.

First up, I'm 30 years old, married, professional, with a mortgage but no kids. As far as comic book knowledge though... well... it's debatable. I've only been reading comics for the last fifteen years (i.e. not since I was a kid) and my tastes aren't that wide ranging, BUT... I do try to sample as many writers or artists as I can. So, very little comic book knowledge? No, I wouldn't say that, but I also wouldn't say I'm well versed in all areas. Never read a single manga, for example. And, I admit, I'm fairly new to the Marvel Universe... there, I said it. Always read more 'out there' books like most of the Vertigo line.

I own and worship just about everything Alan Moore has done (so we agree there) although I'm yet to be really blown away by Morrison's stuff. (I think Animal Man has been my favourite so far) (Haven't read Doom Patrol yet.)

I, like you, prefer actually creativity over buzzwords, certainly... It's just, I'm really enjoying the Ultimate line as it's easy for someone like me, whose not been reading Marvel Universe books their whole lives, to jump into. I can certainly see where you're coming from though, some aspects of the Ultimate world are just plain bad. I picked up Ultimate Daredevil the other day. It was awful. BUT... I utterly enjoyed Ultimates 1 and 2, (haven't read 3) and would be really interested about what you didn't like about them.

What I do take issue with, (in your comment), is "the latest Bendis piece-of-shit"
Have you read Alias? Powers? For someone who prefers creativity and imagination... I'd have thought you'd enjoy what he's doing with comics. If you're ONLY seeing Bendis as Secret Invasion Man, then you're not looking far enough.

Last point: You talk about Kirby and Moore and Morrison rather than whoever's 'hot' right now... sure. I respect that. BUT... take Daredevil for example. I STARTED with Bendis' run. Fell in love with the character, the art, (Mack and Maleev) and just ate it all up. Heard about 'The Greats' who created Daredevil and made him who he was. Stan Lee, and Frank Miller. So I read their stuff... you know what... not that great. Love Miller, don't get me wrong. (Well, like is a better word, Dark Knight Returns, of course, and some others, but still think he's over rated.) And I know he was just starting out when he worked on Daredevil, and I know he IMPROVED it a HELL of a lot... but the best parts were still just kinda ok. I realise comics were different back then, still evolving, absolutely... but I'm not into worshipping the past as if they're better than what's coming out now. Respect it, certainly. Without them, we wouldn't have anything... but Alan Moore said it best with "Whereas the Stan Lee stuff, the Marvel comics, he went from one dimensional characters whose only characteristic was they dressed up in costumes and did good. Whereas Stan Lee had this huge breakthrough of two-dimensional characters. So, they dress up in costumes and do good, but they've got a bad heart. Or a bad leg."

So, no, I'm not a youngster. No, I know 'a bit' about comics, but not as much as you perhaps. And yes, I respect where Thor has come from, completely. But for a mass audience, the Ultimate Thor is the way to go. Taken the design and improved upon it. In my opinion.

Cheers

Its not really my bag, but I don't think its bad. I'd much rather have a 2D series like the 2003 mini episodes. Some of you act like its "Rudolf and the Island of Misfit Toys". What is MUCH more important is that with Clone Wars - you have some really good stories, characterizations, and action scenes. Watching these things with my 5 year old is absolutely great. Now that the Clone Troopers have personalities, it throws a whole new element on the Star Wars universe.
