If you hang around Hollywood long enough, you learn not to believe everything you read in the trades. Still, it was pretty exciting to see the news this week that the indefatigable producer Avi Lerner had wooed Brett Ratner into directing Lerner's upcoming remake of "Conan," the iconic 1982 film that helped launch Arnold Schwarzenegger's long run as a Hollywood action hero. According to the original Hollywood Reporter headline, Ratner had committed to the project, though its latest version was a bit more circumspect, saying he was in "final negotiations" to do the film after working with the screenwriters, who were doing a quick polish to "incorporate" some of Ratner's ideas. The blogosphere wasn't quite so discerning, with some Web outlets simply saying that Ratner was "officially directing" the film. One of Hollywood's most persuasive salesman, Lerner told me this morning that Ratner was the perfect director. "He has the passion and feeling for this project--he even wrote a story about Conan when he was 10 years old," Lerner explained. "He understands the character, he analyzed the script really well. He knows how to make this a really big movie. I like his childlike enthusiasm--he almost sees these movies as wonderful toys. What can I say, he's a nice, likable Jewish boy." Lerner acknowledged that even though he sent out a press release announcing Ratner's involvement with the project, the deal wasn't actually done. "We still have a few obstacles," he said. "Brett is only committed if we agree on a budget, on how to do the special effects and exactly where we'd shoot the film." Lerner has a studio in Bulgaria, so he'd like to shoot most of the movie there, with some exterior work in China. But is Ratner actually committed to doing the film? In two words: Not really. When I called him today, he sounded somewhat agitated, unhappy that news of his negotiations with Lerner had surfaced, especially since he is extremely close to getting a green light from Paramount to make "Beverly Hills Cop 4." "Let me make this very clear," he told me. "I am not doing 'Conan' now. This is totally premature. For now, 'Conan' is only a development deal. I have a deal at Paramount and I'm doing 'Beverly Hills Cop' first, no matter what. Avi shouldn't be telling you or anyone else in the press what I'm doing." So what happened here? And how did Avi get the rights to "Conan" in the first place? Keep reading: The timing of Lerner's press release is revealing, since it surfaced during the annual American Film Market here in Los Angeles, a colorful film-sales carnival where international producers like Lerner do much of their overall business. Lerner was probably eager to make a splash with the news that such a high-profile project was moving ahead with an A-list director attached. Lerner said as much in his press release, boasting "this is a coup for Millennium Films and proves that our choice of projects and material is attracting much higher-profile directors and actors." It's true that landing the rights to "Conan" is a huge coup for Lerner. Originally produced by Dino De Laurentiis, the film had spent years in development at Warners, but never came to fruition. After Warners let the rights go, they ended up in the hands of Paradox Entertainment, a Swedish company that sold the rights to Lerner about 15 months ago. Lerner paid $2.5 million, despite stiff competition. "Everyone was after it, from New Line to Paramount to Universal," he says. "But we acted quicker. The studios always say they need a committee to discuss the decision and then run the numbers. With us, it's very simple. I talk to my partner, Danny Dimbort, and then I say yes." Lerner recently made a deal with Lionsgate to be his partner and distribute the picture, which he says will start production next summer. Lionsgate also distributed the recent "Rambo" installment, which Lerner produced. Lerner knows that Paramount isn't happy about his announcing Ratner's involvement in the project. "They sent me a letter, saying how could I do such a thing," he told me. "Hey, it's a free world. It'll be Brett's decision. I'm not putting a gun to his head." My gut feeling is that if "Beverly Hills Cop 4" comes together soon, Ratner will stay on board. "Conan" hasn't even been cast yet. With "BHC4," Ratner knows he gets to work with a real movie star--Eddie Murphy--and could have a big financial upside if he has a hit. If Lerner isn't willing to wait until Ratner is free again, he'll go hunting for another hot director. When I asked Lerner who he was hoping to get to play Conan, he said, "To be honest, we're looking for a younger Arnold Schwarzenegger, someone we could sign to a three- or four-picture deal, because I see this as a real long-term franchise." Did he ever approach the governor about the part? "I saw Arnold in Las Vegas at the premiere of 'Rambo,' " Lerner says. "He said, 'Wait two years for me--I'll be coming back.' But I can't wait that long." Lerner says he offered Schwarzenegger $1 million just to do a one-day cameo in the picture. "I told him we could even shoot the scene in Sacramento," Lerner recalls. "He was smiling, but he didn't say yes. Maybe he can't take the money while he's still governor. That's OK, if he can't take the money, I'd donate it to a charity or give it to a school that needs the money." Lerner laughs. "Don't worry--I'll approach him again. I don't give up that easily."

Asia, but Hollywood is plugging a big chunk of this as Irish too. I'm Irish, and I say send ALL illegal aliens back to the country they came from. I'm not anti-immigration, I'm anti-illegal immigration. If you want to come to this country then come there legally, learn English, don't expect a handout, and obey the law. Look at the governor of Louisianna. I don't know if he came from India, or was born in the US, but it doesn't matter. Here is someone who is an American. He keeps his culture and heritage alive, but he speaks English, and works with the country, not against it. Oh, and I'm also one quarter Mexican so don't tell me I'm anti-Latino either.
So this is a movie that paints the INS as the bad guys?
by Snake Foreskin
Nov 13th, 2008
10:33:46 AM
Why doesn't that surprise me? Come on, people. Hollywood just doesn't get it. They take the side of the criminals and make the law enforcement officials either corrupt or heartless. Nice. This movie will make about $3 at the box office.

What I would like to see is a movie that bothers to show what's happening in our border towns: drug cartels and military units making incursions onto our soil, killing our citizens at will, with no fear of reprisal.

We have our own citizens being brutally murdered for standing up to these villains when our own government refuses to lift a finger. Our guys are risking their lives, outmanned and outgunned by drug runners, and Hollywood paints them as the villains? Fuck you. You're the villains.

It's only propaganda if it doesn't portray the scenario accurately.
I think legal immigration should be made easier. We have people who hold jobs and are productive, pay taxes, own homes, raise great children, are friendly and neighborly, and basically hold all the attributes that make America great, oh AND they speak English, yet the system is rigged against them. My brother-in-law is one of those people. He's been trying for over TEN YEARS to get citizenship. He holds two jobs, owns a home, pays taxes, has an American wife and an American daughter. He likes soccer, cooking, and fixing up his house. His daughter is the most important thing on the planet to him. He's completely fluent in Spanish and English. And the only reason he has even the slightest chance at getting citizenship is because at his hearing the DA wasn't prepared or organized and the judge got impatient. In other words... HE GOT LUCKY.
Sounds real fair, doesn't it? Pretty far from "give me your tired, huddled masses"...

I hope this exceeds mediocrity and there's no actual reason it is getting dumped. Sure, the trailer makes it look slightly heavy handed and the African chant music that accompanies the images of smiling African American kids and pitiful looking adults doesn't exactly help. But as kwisatzhaderach wrote above this is the type of project I'd love to see Ford more in again. Although ....to be fair...this doesn't seem to be toooo much of a departure as his character. But hopefully it's only a first in a bunch of more interesting role, script and director choices he's going to make. ...And I love his aged and weary look in this one.

These films always play on the fears that one poor little 12 year old girl will be forced back to her homeland by the INS Gestappo. When the fact is in CA we can't even deport illegal aliens who commit crimes, let alone illegal workers.

Talk to anyone who knows about special order 40, its ridiculous. Talk to anyone in SF who lives under the regime of Gavin (I love coke and blowjobs) Newsome who does everything he can to protect El Salvador gang members from being deported. I agree that the path to legal citizenship should be easier, but what I can't fathom is why we make the INS look evil when they aren't even able to do the most basic things.

To anyone living outside of CA, don't believe the propaganda, the INS doesn't have that much time or power, they can barely deport people they know to be to illegal.

You could sweep through Santa Ana and probably find that %40 of the population is illegal. Now I am not suggesting that we start up a Nazi like regime, to be honest I really appreciate so many of what the immigrants bring to this country, and I want to see us expand the ability for more to come, but how is it fair for some to abuse the system, while there are those living here legally (for the last decade or more) who can't get citizenship and pay their taxes, while others cheat the system, bankrupt hospitals due to the free emergency services they take, and then go on with no problems. And you can't just go after the people, you have to start really fining the businesses and those who hire teams of illegal aliens, they are just as bad, if not worse, they are basically operating sweatshops in the US, why isn't Hollywood showing how wrong these guys are, instead of just picking on the INS. Its ricoculous.

I can tell you that in no way does the film make immigration agents out to be goose stomping Gestapo thugs. Ford plays a very sympathetic ICE cop and Sean Penn plays a sympathetic border patrol agent. It's actually the exact opposite of what the naysayers are barking about. If I was an illegal immigrant, I'd pray that one of these guys grabbed me because they approach their jobs with a lot of compassion in the film. Also, Harrison is bad ass in this role. May get awards attention. And another thing: the film has not been on the shelf. It has only just been completed. It went through a lengthy editing period and was only delivered to the studio a few weeks ago. It was hoped it could be ready last year for release, but the studio opted to take more time with it. Don't believe the reports that the film is being dumped, either. From what I hear, it will have a qualifying release in December. Anything can happen to change that - but that's the latest word. The film has also tested really well several times. By the way, the line in the trailer about "I never understood why he joined the immigration gestapo" is taken completely out of context. It's not even said in regard to Ford's character. It was said to describe Ford's partner, an Iranian American ICE agent played by Cliff Curtis (in an amazing performance). It's a decent trailer, but it doesn't half convey the intensity and power of the many storylines. The storyline about the young Muslim girl is inspired by a true story. You can read about it in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2005/06 /17/nyregion/17suicide.html

..why? Why do you want poor, innocent, guileless immigrants coming here, to the worst, most hateful country in the world? You've hated this country for at least eight years (you'll probably bite your tongue through the Magic Negro's administration, no matter how much he dissapoints you) and yet you've STILL advocated open borders. If the country were really that terrible you'd think you'd be parked along the border with sings saying "Go Back! It's A Neocon Hell!" As for the movie...I predict it will gross less than "W." I always love it when people who are wishy washy on border security say they're "shocked at the anger Americans have over the border issue." No shit, Sherlock. We want the border secured, we want any immigrant who ends up here to do so legally and we want to be at least reasonably certain they're not coming here with a hidden agenda like terrorism or the drug trade. Until they figure this out pro-immigration politicians will lose elections and pro-immigration movies will lose money.

In your brother-in-law's case I agree. If you have an American spouse I think you should automatically get citizenship, assuming that it is a real marriage, and give it some sort of reasonable time frame to last. What gets me is I have a friend from Albania. Her father came to this country, then she and her brother and sister, then her mother. It took them about six years to get here piecemeal as war refugees following the process legally. Then it took her another eight to get her greencard. Not once did the family come looking for a handout. Then, in another part of our state the government wants to hand out free identification cards to illegal aliens, and not enforce the laws. It is a slap in the face to my friend and her family. They followed the rules, then these others get to basically cut in line. Oh, and her brother joined the National Guard to fight for our country. All speak English, and all go to school. We don't have bilingual Albanian paperwork here, or have press 1 for English, 2 for Albanian. They came and adapted to this country without losing their culture or heritage, not the other way around. If Latino want people to stop thinking of them as stereotypically lazy, then the first thing they need to do when they get here is try to learn English. When I move to Spain, I'll learn Spanish. When I move to France, I'll learn French. I'll adapt to those countries, not the other way around. It's not racist, it's common sense.

Which is exactly why so many people feel they have the right to come here, red tape and protocol be damned...they have been willing to risk death to get here for decades, so as wrong as illegals are, I understand why some do it.

And once I'm in the theater, I'll learn a valuable and poignant lesson about how illegal aliens aren't really doing anything illegal, even though they're, uh, illegal aliens.

Forget about whether or not this will be a good film. But dosn't Harrison Ford make the best angry face ever? i never realized it until now, but in every film he makes that scoul that only mr. Ford can do

in the film. They just put that line in the trailer. That's what's wrong with trailers these days - they don't reflect the accurate film they're marketing. This is a hardcore film. There's tons of sex and violence and it's a lot grittier than the trailer will have you believe. The film doesn't apologize for illegals, nor does it make a case against it. The film is more intent on depicting a no-win situation for both sides. We see illegals as human beings, not just statistics and we see the enforcement cops as guys who have a tough job to deal with, being the gatekeepers of the U.S. It's a compelling film and it's too bad that CRASH came before it, because that's all anyone is going to compare it to. This is a more focused film than CRASH and it doesn't feed off a bunch of ridiculous coincidences. Kramer is a far better director than Paul Haggis. Haggis shoots like a TV director. There's some good style to this film. Jim Sturgess is great as well.

about the lowlife pice of shit scumbag degenerate Mexican criminal who was deported and then snuck back in to SF and then wasted a father and his two sons for cutting him off in traffic? Sounds like a slamdunk to me. Or about the drug cartels who are taking over border towns and either bribing their way in or flat-out murdering those who stand in their way. Yeah, lets get some REAL movies about illegal immigration from Hollywood. I'm a Russian immigrant and my parents and I came here legally and bust our asses to pay taxes and obey the law like everyone else. We don't expect special treatment. So, don't tell me about how tough it is out there. Make a movie about the real trash and criminals that come here against the law and then continue to break it any chance they get. Fuck Hollywood and fuck Ford for his self-righteous liberal bullshit. He looks more bored in this movie than he did in Indy 4. Retire already if you have this much fun acting. I want the Ford who did The Mosquito Coast and The first 3 Indiana Jones movies. That Ford had a blast doing films. Thsi Ford looks like he's doing work detail for getting out of prison early.

to me again, with charts and testimony as to how did Crash and Paul Faggis won Oscars??? Driving Miss Dasy and Ordinary People did not deserve to win over Goodfellas and Ragin Bull, but at least they were good movies. Crash is one of the worst, lamest, crudest, most tone-deaf films I've ever seen in my life, with some of the worst dialogue I've ever heard, and the critics acted like this was the first film about race and racism that Hollywood ever made. It's obvious Oscars are a joke, but CRASH????

Go write and direct your own movie about that piss-ass version. It's guys like you that want to paint every immigrant with the same xenophobic brush. What makes you even worse, is that you are an immigrant yourself and someone opened the gates for you and now that you've got your American Dream, it's just fuck you to the rest of the underprivileged world. Well, fuck you, bro, because America was created by immigrants and it will always be a country of immigrants. You and your xenophobic cronies are always quoting the .01 percent of immigrants who cause shit in this country, but most immigrants are hard working, decent human beings and deserve to be cut some slack. How about I just label you as some Gulag hopping Russian scumbag mafia import - does that cover you and your family? Well, don't fucking use that same all purpose brush on the rest of American's immigrants, illegal or other. The only difference between illegal and legal is a piece of paper with your name on it. Bottom line: if immigrants want to come to the U.S. and do good and work hard and contribute to our great country, then they should be welcomed. If they want to come here and try fuck us over, then we'll ream their asses and show them the door. I'm so fucking tired of this attitude that we can't take any more immigrants. America only has a population of 300 million and more land to settle people on that you can imagine. We just need to find a way to deter them from congregating in the major cities.

Where in my post does it even hint that I am against immigrants and immigration? I can tell that you are not the shrpest tool in the shde from your writing, but I still can't figure out where did you see that I was against immigration. Did I say that all immigrants are scumbag criminals? Did I say that people shouldn't immigrate to US? All I said was that I am an immigrant and I'm here and I pay my taxes and obey the law, which is what everybody should expect from anyone who comes to this country. Clearly, since you've done some much research into the matter, you must know about all of the immigrants who are not here legaly and who don't pay shit in taxes and still get the use of the services provided by our government. Now THIS I have a problem with. if you take you must give too. I fail to see why anybody should get the benefit of out healthcare and other services (like free education) and not even bother to pay taxes, which is what happens when you are here illegaly and work under the table. So, where am I wrong on this, Mr. Genius? Grow the fuck up.

StraightToHell -- Well, what about all the social security payments they make under bogus social security numbers? They can't ever claim those benefits and those "illicit" payments have been keeping social security alive for years. The dirty little secret that the U.S. government doesn't want to talk about. I know a lot of people in the immigrant community and they are only using our health services in the most serious of medical situations. They're shit scared to come out of the shadows and risk being reported to immigration authorities. The right way of becoming legal in America may be a three month wait for you, and you probably came in on your daddy's greencard, so I doubt you washed a dish in your life. But for someone else - and not just from Mexico or South America, it can be a ten to twenty year wait because the system is so fucked up. You can buy your way in for a million dollars, but unless you have a powerhouse degree and a serious job offer (and even that will only buy you a temporary H visa), you're going to struggle to get residency in the United States. Oh, and if you get married, obviously. You can't even get a brother or sister or child over 21 into the country without a wait of several years. Everybody says, they should wait in line - but do any of you have any idea how long or arbitrary that line is? No - I don't fucking think so. You just regurgitate what you read in the headlines and buy into Lou Dobbs' rhetoric. The white guy in a three piece suit sitting next to you in Starbucks could be as illegal as the Mexican dude working in your yard - maybe even more so. When the politicians get off their partisan soap boxes and stop using the issue as a political wedge to gain support, maybe they'll do something about fixing this country's immigration law. And, StraightToHell, if you could write half as decent as me, you'd be smiling all the way to the bank. Fuckhead.

You don't know a fucking thing you're talking about IndyJonze. Both i and my family wore other people's clothes, had furniture from trashcans and worked dirty-ass jobs like crazy to get where we are. And we waited for years to get a green card and to become citizens. So, don't be telling me about how tough it is to come to US. Right asshole??? And my parents and I came here at the same time as a family, when I was 13. Of course I depended on them to come here, how the fuck else could I at that age? Steal a fucking plane??? What does that have to do with anything in my original post about making movies about criminals who come here illegaly??? Huh, moron? Before you get on your soap box read what people say and don't put words in their mouth and start insulting them, you fucking twat. Just because it's hard to become a legal alien, doesn't mean it's cool to break the law and get free shit based on other people's taxes. Law may not be fair, but it's the fucking law. Learn to argue you fucking cretin.

Listen, Fucktard, stop shitting on immigrants and I'll stop shitting on you. I meet asswipes like you every day. Zero compassion for anyone else's circumstances but yourself. You're the one laying judgment on illegals, not me. You're the one declaring illegals criminals. Half the immigrants in this country start out with no status - it was statistically reported a few months ago. I don't have the fucking link but you can google it. Therefore, half the immigrant population in the U.S. must be criminal, right? YOU don't know what the fuck you're talking about. And until you personally had to struggle for a greencard, I don't need to read your kissed-in shit, regardless of whether you had to wear someone else's clothes or scored furniture from the trash. Boo-hoo. Douches like you should be back in Russia watching American movies with subtitles. Your greencard would have better served someone with an ounce of decency.

harrison in indy and star wars is simply my favorite, but he really doesn't have much other than that. I'm now imagining him in traffic and syriana. I wasn't huge on those movies, but they were ok. With him filling those roles they would prob be another firewall or whatever that was. k19 was ok though, but ford was not the best thing in it.
