The best thing that's ever come out of Wales, save perhaps for the Super Furry Animals, is getting made into a movie! (Hopefully). I even put it down in the Dream Movies thread in The Zone (it's right at the top of the page next to chat, you can't miss it) as the movie I'd most like to see made. Let's just hope it matches up to the brilliance of the '80s Sean Connery adaptation. I know, even with Malick on board it'll be hard...but with the perfect collection circumstances, it might manage to match it. ;^) This is one of the purest of the medieval poems, and Malick is one of the purest directors in the biz right now, so I can't see how this would fail. Let's just hope I don't croak before he finally knuckles down to it.

Then cinema would have a lot more character than it does now (though I think we're in quite a creative purple patch at the moment). I generally try to watch a movie on its own terms, but I guess that's just me.

While it is true he gets near universal critical acclaim it seems to only pop up when he has a new film coming out. He is easily one of the top 5 american filmakers of the last 30 yrs but he rarely gets the play of a Kubrick or Scorsese.

I would ask how you watched New World. I would say that Malick films in general, but that film in particular you really need to see in a cinema. Sitting in the dark with those images and sounds envelpoing you, it truly becomes a sort of meditative experience. Seeing "The New World" was one of the best movie going experienes of my life, but the film simply does not work on a TV(at least for me).

also wrote a Christian fable called Pearl. Both of the books were written in an insanely intricate numerical style. Gawain even had an odd number of lines (a few hundred and 99) to indicate that the character at the end of the story wasn't quite "complete." There are a whole bunch of other little symmetries and "codes" like that. (And poets think they've got it hard having to rhyme) ANYWAY, point is, there are quite a few early semi-Pagan Christian influences sprinkled about in Gawain, so it wouldn't be too far off thinking of the Green Knight as some kind of heavenly messenger. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it's the early Christian elements which attracted Malick to begin with.

Who said it comes from Wales? The poem was written by an anonymous guy from the midlands. & I know many Welsh historians back in the victorian era linked Gawain to Gwalchmei ap Gwyar, but there's no proof of that. The only reason dictionaries tranalte it as Gawain is because it was popular at the time to do thaat, in the same way that Britannia was linked to Boudica & therefore Victoria & the way that the notion of a celtic brotherhood & foggy, green hilled image was invented by the likes of Arthur Conan Doyle. The truth is, none of that stuff ever actually existed before then (the spanish were celts for example. Back in Roman times, if you weren't a Roman or a Barbarian, or a Visigoth etc, you were probably a Celt. The image of Spain is pretty fucking different to the image we see, the one that was invented, along with the Welsh claiming a British folktale as their own. In fact, there's no real proof that King Arthur or any of that stuff ever existed, nevermind lived in Wales. You go to Northumbria, they'll say he lived there. Malick is great, the story is great, but don't start trynna claim it, 'cause it's as Welsh haggis.

I just happen to know about that stuff (I've been studying it since I was a kid) & it really isn't Welsh. I mean, it may be, but it may not be. Like I said, historians from Northumbria claim it, as do historians from Cornwall. There's nothing anti welsh about it. I think I was fiar by saying that Victorian historians & authors, created images (brittania equalling Boudica, Gawain for Wales etc. I could have mentioned that the first time the Scots went to Ireland, there was a massacre. By the time of Victoria, that was forgotten in the name of image building.) I was fair. Just saying that you can't really say it's the best thing to come out of wales, because it possibly didn't. Besides, if I'm Anti-Wales then I wouldn't have a Welsh girlfriend (the real best thing to come out of Wales)..and I would need a cumrag.

I didn't for one second think you were anti-Welsh. And I'm going to be one of the first people in the history of the Internets to step back and admit that they just got schooled. I knew that the book's origins were muddy, but I thought that Gawain was a sort of Welsh icon, and much of it was written in Welsh. And isn't Gawain Middle-English for Gavin (a pretty Welsh name)? But I guess that's hardly proof of anything. The Super Furry Animals are DEFINITELY Welsh though, right?

I enjoyed Sean Connery's role of the Green Knight back in the 80's movie of the same name. The flick wasn't that good, but Connery, as usual, made it watchable. I wonder if the new movie will be the J.R.R. Tolkien version that he translated from ancient celt, or a remake of the Connery film?

It is one of the most gorgeous, engrossing, thought provocking, multi-layered, and thrilling experiences I have ever had as a film-goer. And Terrence Malick is completely underrated, not overrated. "The New World" is very HIGH art. And it deserved best picture from the academy.

This would be an amazing project, although Malick is box office poison. I remember seeing The Thin Red Line 3 times in the theater and 2 out of 3 times I was alone in the theater and the other time there was one other person. Malick's a genius, but he's way too intelligent for today's audience.

He has zero self control when it comes to editing and his movies wind up being long, dull-as-fuck exercises in directorial masturbation. After Kubrick died, Malick was left as the only true living genius. And I agree. Malick's films are not for everyone. I hate to put down anybody's taste, but you do appreciate them more the older you get. Not that you have to be OLD to like them, but a certain amount of patience is needed to watch them. Same as the films of Tarkovsky. They are amazing if you just relax and let them work you over. But must be grueling for anybody who expects a Tarantino-like explanation for every single scene. Plus, Malick has the best eye for gorgeous images. His stuff rivals anything Kurosawa did in his prime.

but now that I think about it, it sounds perfect. I just re-read Sir Gawain and the Green Knight a few weeks ago, so it's fresh in my memory. The poem has a great sense of humor about it (which is sometimes missing in Malick's films) so I wonder how he will handle it.
