I don't think I'll miss him on-screen. I think they kind of painted him into a corner and there's nowhere else for the character to go unless they want to redeem him for some reason and seriously, is this a show about redemption? I didn't think so.

His character development has been incredible. He's a perfect character to offset Michael Scott. See he was presented to us as the normal, straightman character, like Jim. But we eventually learn that even though he seems normal, he has issues of his own. His evil and ambitious rise to power and his downfall. Now the guy who once seemed like the most normal seems to have lost his mind. I think his character arc demonstrates what I believe is the overall theme of The Office - there is no normal. Michael isn't the crazy boss, Jim isn't the normal joe - although that's what you are supposed to think at first. But then you slowly realize that they are all just human beings with distinct personalities. Different issues, ideas, beliefs, etc. None of them are perfect.

I'll miss Michael's creepy moments with Ryan. "Jim's been staring at me all day, but it's nothing compared to the way Michael stares at me." I also enjoyed Ryan's "I played for keeps" speech last week. I was curious to see where he'd go this season, but it's time for some lasting changes on this show. Amy Ryan gone after 6 episodes? Weird. Toby's coming back. In an interview, Amy and Paul evaded a question about his return and a possible conflict between Holly and Toby.

But it was in the bathroom. And we knew who it was, considering he was the one who used the shitter right before the mess. It was ridiculous. It looked like someone packed a hand grenade in crap and pulled the pin. Noone wanted to use the bathroom after that, and we only had one terlet (loft office, dot.com days.) This guy kinda looked like Harry, and had to sit down to wait for the elevator to come. Nasty.

It's strange what happened to Ryan. Episode one was his first day on the job, and typically a show will follow that character as the hero (like Dr. Carter on ER). Instead, they had Ryan go the way of Wesley Crusher.

I actually feel the same way about Andy. . . his story arc was getting from Standford to Anger Management. Once he came back, he just wasn't funny anymore. His relationship with Angela isn't even sad. . . it's just mean.

I don't get people who say they should just let Jim and Pam be happy and not introduce anymore conflict in their relationship, because that would be "realistic". Of course they shouldn't go do the Sam/Diane, Ross/Rachal contrived on/off thing. That would be ridiculous. Jim and Pam have one of the most realistic friendships/courtships/relatio nships ever depicted on TV, but even the most mundan, seeminly perfect couples have problems. And it's always the little problems thst seem like huge ones when your in one of those relationships. Yeah, don't have them cheat on each other or have dramatic arguments, but having them wonder and doubt if their seemingly perfect union is right is realistic the the exact type of conflict for the show. Last weeks ending, with Pam's conversation with her male friend, was tough because it made us and Jim wonder if their relationship was flawed. Jim used to be the one that encouraged Pams art, while Roy stood in the way. But is Jim now the one holding her back? Pam's male friend seems just as nice and funny and average and as concerned for Pam as Jim. Is Jim now Roy, and are we now rooting for "Roy" and against "Jim"? The show is trying to defy our expectations, which is the right type of coflict and drama. Just "letting them be happy" would be the most unrealistic and unsstisfying thing they could do.

The British office was only two seasons so the boss could be an idiot and get fired at the end. The romance/sexual tension thing was also perfect for two seasons. Jim and Pam had a great story arc but it's boring now. Jim seems to have run out of things to do as well. I thought Ryan was hilarious as the arrogant, cokehead boss but he's useless returning as a temp. Dwight has become a cartoon. I enjoyed Andy when he was a douchebag but now I just feel sorry for him.

Remember last season how the first like four or five episodes were hour long? I sort of miss that much Office. These deleted scenes couldn't extend the show a full hour, but add just a bit more and they would have. There is so much material in there, and I love the dynamic of Phyllis and Stanley as friends, its both funny, endearing, and cleverly realistic. Working in a corporate office, I have seen the strangest alliances form, often simply due to two weirdos stuck by themselves in an area and forced to be friends because of lack of understanding from everyone else.

I want them to just let Pam and Jim be, because I'm sick of the tired sexual tension cliche EVERY SHOW has to play out for 10 seasons before they finally get together in the final season. In the same show, we have still Michael/Holly/Jan, Andy/Dwight/Angela, and now Ryan/Kelly/Darryl. We DO NOT NEED ANOTHER LOVE TRIANGLE, and we do not need any more romance drama. This show has it in spades. Jim and Pam are the least funny of the romances anyway, and I tune in for the funny. Making them happy (for at least a while) lets the other more improbable and funny relationships take center stage.

New blood is needed - Ryan's character is done, Toby was kind of wryly amusing but not "ha ha" funny, Andy was fricking hilarious when he was the "super dwight" trying to outdo him and was mega-obnoxious. Now he's just mildly cocky and irritating. ------------------------------ ---- My recipe would be to look back to the British Office and do something like the Neil character from Season 2 - a new corporate manager who everyone loves and Michael feels pushed aside by, driving him to even more insane attempts to get people to like him. Let them go to darker places as UK did with Michael being snapped to breaking point as his new management realizes they don't really want/need him. For casting, go back to the daily show pool and get Jason Jones or Rob Riggle onboard.

While it seems like the over-whelming majority of folks hate his character, if he does indeed do a complete departure from The Office, it will be a massive loss. Most of the episodes people credit as being the funniest were ones he wrote and produced. So, while we may hate "Ryan", we should still respect and appreciate "BJ".

According to IMDB, Charles Robinson appeared in 193 episodes, which would be about how many episodes they would have done over 9 seasons. However, Harry Anderson is listed at 118 episodes. That's 75 fewer episodes. And John Larroquette is listed at 117 episodes. Does my memory fail me and there were 3 or so seasons of a Dukes of Hazard type recast in the middle of the series? Or is IMDB just plain wrong?

Bumps in a relationship are pretty normal and all of these conflicts (and tension teasers like the one last night) are all reasonable and brought to simple conclusions usually within the same episode. I guess people expect more contrived happiness from their sitcom relationships. They're not the problem this season...especially since Pam's only been in roughly half of the episodes. The problem is the rollercoaster nature of the stories. Last night was heavier on drama, week before was pretty hilarious, week before that Holly left the show, etc. They're striking a much better balance than last season, but it still jerks you around because you don't really know whether to expect a funnier or more depressing story next time around. I thought bringing back Kelly/Ryan was weak as hell, but it could be setting up for B.J.'s forthcoming departure. I could only ever see Kelly as the main reason for Ryan running away forever. Funniest line thus far this season: "I told the temp agency just give me Ryan Howard, give him to me. I want him. I need him." Dammit the delivery cracked me up.
