They change his age (He's Only 10?) and what, the plot is going to be... "A mother and her young son move from Middle America to the inner city after she loses her job at the . They live in a one bedroom apartment when on his first day of school he meets the neighborhood bullies. They chase him, take his lunch money, and chaos ensues. UNTIL, elderly man from Okinawa goes Kung Fu on their little underage asses. The boy learns this Kung Fu and saves the neighborhood from these young gangstas at the end when he beats them at the local Boys and Girls Club annual Karate Championship."... The plot of a kid being taught karate is pretty basic and you could easily use it for a film and not call it "karate kid". so there only reason for using the karate kid name is the hope of drawing in fans of the previous films. I was never a huge fan of the first Karate Kid until I saw part 3 and the DOZENS of movies that tried to make a simular film that did not even come close. Karate Kid had great drama, great romance, great suspense, great terror and a great relationship between characters plus a great sound track. It will be hard to replicate that if they are doing a remake, even if Speilberg himself was involved. They could pull of a great sequel. They need to bring Ralph Machio back since he has charisma for this sort of film and he would bring in all the people who watched Karate Kid at the movies and on TV growing up. He is know old enough to be the Karate Master.

These types of movies aren't made to be good. Okay, I knew that. But what I realized is that they aren't really even made with aspirations of having a big box office return. They use the theatrical release essentially as advertising for the DVD release. They bank on the fact that parents will buy all of these crappy non-offensive films for their kids so that the TV set will continue to act as a 24/7 babysitter. Direct-to-DVD releases are all well and good for established Disney characters, but actual theatrical releases get more weight in the general populace's subconsciousness.

Not that it wouldn't be right for Macchio to play a teacher now, but only if he'd be Daniel again and not Miyagi. If this is a full fledged remake, then Miyagi should be played by an actor who is Japanese American. I'm surprised there isn't more outrage about that kind of thing change too. At first the Smith casting surprised me, then I realized they want him to make sequels! Getting him at 10 is a smart move in that case. As for this perception of blacks taking over roles that were previously not black--all I can say is this is the result of Hollywood remaking things with name recognition and not breaking new ground. We've segregated our entertainment for a long time, and while I don't agree with changing the ethnicity of characters who are SUPPOSED to have a certain ethnicty, I'm not against changing characters who can be anybody. For example, it was important that Rocky was Italian American, while Rambo didn't have to be.

tom cruise does it...brad pitt did it with troy... actors destroy movie properties due to arrogance. i hope all of you blasted brad pitt for TOTALLY destroying the awesome helen of troy myth. that is worse in my eyes. lol@achiles lasting to the end of the movie, because pitt played achiles... for all the purest...the ralph's karate kid wasn't even true to the origin...they made it about a teenager, to make more money...am i happy they are remaking it? no...but it's no worse than karate kid 3. will is in it to make money...period. he is savvy and building an empire. people on this board just want to see the black actor playing the bug eyed comic relief sidekick to some blond hair blue eyed hero. the same ones that want to cast that muscle head from lost in every role. hence the jocking of sam jackson and morgan freeman...they are fine as long as they play second fiddle to some white dude. do you know how many times a white actor has played character written originally as minority role? a hell of a lot more times than minorities have been been cast to replace a white actor. i love 80's action movies as much as the next guy... you slurp and pine for the terrible acting of stallone and arnold, but bash will smith...if this was christian bale remaking the karate kid...you guys would be doing back flips....talking about..."i hope bale casts himself as daniel-san and ken watanabe as mr. myagi...oh and i hope he wears a cowl and makes cobra kai an evil ninja cult."...will isn't the greatest actor in the world, but he is solid and steadily improving. will's kid has been in 2 big budget movies...one of which will had NOTHING to do with... it crushes you, because the most bankable movie star in hollywood is a black man.

CFE stands for Creativity For Entertainment. And this is something that has been waning in recent years. Seems most of the projects coming out of mainstream American entertainment has to be remade from an earlier (and usually SUPERIOR) work. It has been frankly disturbing how prevalent this trend is today in movies and television...moreso the former, of course. Why do they do it? Lack of original ideas? Appeal to the adults who grew up with the originals? Saving money? The (inaccurate) belief that things always need to be reimagined to appeal to younger audiences who hate anything "old"? Whatever the reason, a stand needs to be made. And hopefully it will begin NOW. I propose that if you believe what I believe, to join this petition to get a couple of standards established: 1) Remaking older movies or using "hipped"-up versions of classic television shows should be looked upon as a form of PLAGIARISM. Someone does a movie, it's DONE. THAT'S IT. 2) There should be a time limit on making sequels; i.e. you can only do one within a to-be-determined amount of time. 3) Exceptions can be made for a character or franchise that lends itself to multiple continuities. (mostly applies to comic book characters, cartoon characters with more than one continuity, etc. However, it must be agreed to have source material available to follow AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE, and/or a source that has worked extensively with the source material.)
