Overall I think I like the U.K. version better. In particular, Philip Glenister is a hundred times better than Harvey Keitel. Still, it's not bad, and better than most of the pap on ABC these days.

I've never paid attention to the next show. I mean it's on, usually because I forget to change the channel while I'm online going "OMIGOD! Did you see that?" and looking for enhanced photos and translations of Korean. And then I do realize that the next show is on when I rewind LOST to zoom in on something or see something I missed that everyone else is talking about, like dharma sharks. Maybe "Life on Mars" should do itself a favor and get a lighting guy before this change takes effect. Maybe the spillover LOST fans will like it if they can see it.

Which would also mean at 22 eps, the US version would have automatically outrun the original. Fingers still crossed for Pushing Daisies. Couldn't care less about Dirty Sexy Money or Private Practice though.

Pushing Daisies, Lost and Life on Mars would be a great block. All very different in tone, but all appeal to genre fans to a certain degree. I personally like LOM - I'm a sucker for things set in the '70s, since that's when I grew up. I never saw the British version, but I'm liking the lead character, Gretchen Mol, and even Keitel's growing on me. It fills the hole that Journeyman (and Swingtown, to a degree) left. I'm looking forward to January - 24, Dollhouse, Lost, BSG, Obama's inauguration. January 09 could be a damn good month.

Everytime ABC has tried to use Lost as a lead-in, it has failed. The show's audience simply doesn't stick around for the next program.

I've tried hard to like LOM. I'm a sucker for 70s stuff. It's just so boring to watch. I feel like I'm doing a friend a favor by screening their shit. All the elements are there: great setting, actors, etc, but the final product is disappointing. This show is a dead man walking.

I want to poke my eye out when I hear prime time networks lable something as "Sci-fi Block". Why don't they just label it "Nerd Block" or "Won't Likely to Succeed" block. Sorry, I'm projecting Fox anger. Actually, other than Pushing Daisies, the new Life on Mars is the only other show I am watching this season. I am totally facinated with it. The set design thrills me and the music...Wow. I have only have one request and that is they play more Donavan.

Yeah, the UK version is superior (so far), but the US version turned out far better than most of us expected. And there are enough subtle changes to make the US version seem fresh even if they're recycling the UK stories. Presuming they completely rewrite the UK finale, the last third of the season should be very interesting.

My problem with the US version is of all the episodes aired so far (including the one next week) they have taken story lines right from the UK version. (Except for one) It's like I'm watch a remake. If they came up with their own story ideas maybe I wouldn't be as bored by it.

I like Jason O'Mara's Sam and the cast overall, even though I think the show might be writing itself into a corner. Still, I want to see what happens, how it all turns out. However, the only thing that makes me kinda sad is Michael Imperioli in such a minor role.

I'd say any show that ends it's Pilot episode with a monster tearing down trees in the woods and a French womans voice playing on a loop for 16 years is pretty deep in the "sci-fi" category. Just because something isn't in space or the future doesn't mean it's not sci-fi. Science + Fiction = Lost.

I think this move will help out both Life on Mars and Lost for ABC, which is a good thing for the network, for the genre, and for us fans. For me, Life on Mars US just surpassed the British original with last week's episode. I prefer O'Mara to John Simm (although O'Mara needs Simm's black leather jacket), and I think a good portion of the supporting cast is better in the US version. Mike Imperioli is a much better "Ray" than the UK original. However, Keitel is not as good as Glenister was as Gene Hunt. It is too bad that Glenister turned down the offer to reprise his role in this version because they could've easily explained that Hunt emigrated to the US after the Korean War and became a law man. Oh well, maybe they can get Glenister to guest star somehow. Now there are ways to improve the series further. For one, ABC needs to shoot it better; it looks bad in HD and in standard definition it looks even more dreary than the UK original. Just because it takes place in the 1970s does not mean it needs to be artificially drab. The show also needs to adopt the UK theme music for the opening titles. The US version is totally deficient in terms of dramatically opening titles. And dump the coma routine and go straight to meta physical for the time travel explanation. There were shades of this in the last episode which was a good move. I'll save some of my guest star suggestions for some other time.

Since there were only 16 total UK episodes, it's a safe bet we'll see some entirely original episodes in 2009 provided there's a full 22-episode season. Actually, wasn't the Vietnam vet/Maharishi episode (#3) an original story? That one wasn't too bad.

...like with many BBC hit programs [cough Doctor Who cough], the original Life on Mars was not shot on HD. "Future proofing" is a near alien concept at the BBC which apparently is more concerned now with showing that white and/or straight people are truly a minority in the UK and speaking proper English English is no longer fashionable. i'm loving Life On Mars. maybe the UK version is better for some reason other than firsties, but until they learn that real cameras are not just for documentaries in the UK, i will not watch. i don't get the bashing of the lighting. i love the choices they have made it is conciously slightly amber/sepia with a very light grain when it is in the 70s, the setup, sam's flashbacks, and the scenes with the rover are all crystal clear. it is a device for the show that mirror's sam's point of view and shapes audience perception. what is purported to be dream seems more real than what is purported to be real. the cast is superb and the story has kept my interest. the best new show on this year hands down. oh wait, i won't be watching lost after all, unless ghost hunters is in reruns by then. that and house are required viewing for my wife. sorry lost.

I've tried to like Life on Mars, too, but StevenScorsese put it best: it falls short despite having good character actors, good production value, blahblahblah. Why? Because the writing sucks. If you haven't figured out all of the plot "twists" halfway through each episode, you've got problems.
