On the other hand, if the trailer description is accurate, I don't care very much. What I read I liked - except for that rebellious teen shit. Trek has the potential for a new start with fresh faces and fresh stories. Only the universe and mythology should remain constant at least in the broader strokes.

Maybe it's my cynical side, but I wonder how folks would react if Kirk did in fact bed the programmer to beat the test -- but the programmer turns out to be a disgusting old man? That would definitely qualify as a new twist on the characters sexual hijinks during TOS.

Glad I'm lukewarm about Star Trek, or I'd probably be screaming. And though I may be lukewarm, at least I remember from it that Vulcans are not emotional. But you can't have a teenage drama a la Smallville without emotions, right?

Of course, why would anyone expect a decent film from the man responsible for "Cloverfield" and "Superman vs Flying Kryptonian CIA Agent Lex Luthor"?

So, if you don't want a teen with angst, what do you want?
by JumpinJehosaphat
Nov 9th, 2008

A teen filled with purpose and stoicism? Would that make for a better story? I'm hard pressed to think so, but I'll admit it would be the road less traveled script-wise. Oh, and I'm sure Paramount doesn't typically hire those who've not graduated from high school, V'Shael. However, high schools in America do tend to graduate those without basic grammar and composition skills.

from the trailer they're focusing on right from the start, which is good are Kirk's daredevil hijinks (especially in the later movies he loved to take stupid risks) and Spock's human side being much stronger in his younger days. It makes a lot of sense to have a guy almost in exile from Vulcan because he wanted to join Starfleet, angry and barely able to control it. It wasn't until quite late that he became the cool and logical Spock. They're reinventing Trek so "normal" movie going fans might want to take a look while still keeping enough hooks to interest long time geeks. Nipples on the Batsuit, flames on Optimus, Indy in a fridge and now what? Kirk being emo? I can live with that, I managed to put up with all the rest. Can't be worst than Nemesis.

I'm not even that big of a Trek fan, and even I know Spock is half human. Maybe this won't be the fanfic every trekker hopes it might be, but that also means it might just be a GOOD FILM. I can't believe I'm typing this, but as a medium-grade Star Trek fan my whole life, I can't help thinking of "The Concience of the King," and how it was one of the more powerful episodes of the series. I thought the fact that, as a boy, Kirk narrowly escaped colonial genocide informed his character in an interesting way. And I don't see any indication that they've included that in this movie; and the fact that he's a tweener on what looks to Earth is evidence against it.

Well as a long time Trek fan I'll point you to the fact that Kirk was born in Iowa, 2233. If he was "around 11 years old" during this car thing seen in the trailer it could be the very reason he was sent to Tarsus IV in the first place, he was punished (He was 13 when the events of genocide talked about in The Concience of the King took place.) Who knows how it's going to happen in the finished movie? Everything so far though is pointing to proper Trek continuity. Except maybe Chekov.

I think Abrams is a talented guy, but I can't say I am a fan per se. I like some ST too, but, like many franchises, I am disappointed as many times as I am entertained.

Also, prequels like "The Young Adventures of (Insert any well known franchise here) don't really work for me... There are exceptions of course, but for the most part, that style of storytelling is heavy on excessive exposition and is often trapped by the canon of what has come before.

So I think I will wait to hear what the word of mouth is before I stand in line for this. My hope is that JJ will refresh ST the way Bond and Batman were is recent years.

Sounds super corny, but could be fun...
by Chewtoy
Nov 9th, 2008
10:54:13 AM
I'll be happy when the whole "prequel" phase of storytelling is over and done with. Who the hell are these people who have been dying to see classic characters in their youths? "Sure, Ahab is interesting in Moby Dick, but what was he like as a lovestruck teenager? Now *that's* a story to tell!" But aside from the stupid prequel angle and the cheesy dialog suggested above, this will probably be fun... which is really all I need out of a Star Trek flick.

Nov 9th, 2008
11:02:50 AM
Funny you mention that... In a previous talkback about this new ST film, I asked the same question about Chekov and the continuity problem. Someone reconned it for me by suggesting that Chekov was always on the Enterprise, but was not promoted to the bridge crew until the second season of TOS... hence allowing for Khan and the continuity issue in the new film.

The idea is so simple I can't believe I never thought of it before.

ok, maybe. But that Bones dialogue sounds a bit "off". Maybe if Kelley were still alive he would've had something to say about that -- but it just doesn't sound like something Dr. McCoy would say to me. And I might add that if you intend to add the kind of background situation mentioned by both of these tipsters in the opening scene, it would be smart for the filmmakers to take it very seriously and not as a simple "device". It sounds rather BOLD, but hopefully they haven't destroyed their own conceptual ideas of the characters by pulling punches, i.e. holding back on the realism. One last thing, these descriptions make it all to obvious that this film will definitely suffer without Shatner's involvement. If only in flashback, his presence will probably be demanded by the audience, once they really get into it. This is in fact a story which seems to revolve around both Spock and Kirk, respectively. Having one appear and not the other...just doesn't work, given the way this movie sounds to be devised. How can you have the emotional punch of one without the other.

The OS and NG were like lightning in a bottle. They shouldn't have worked but they did. The OS especially had it's share of terrible, campy cliches that somehow worked due to the fact that the cast took everything seriously and had some sparkling chemistry. The good & great Star Trek movies all had just the right amount of camp goodness, totally self aware moments, and dead serious situations, often at the exact same time. ("KAAAAHHHNNN!!!," and McCoy's summary of the plot to iv: "You're proposing that we go backwards in time, find humpback whales, then bring them froward in time, drop 'em off, and hope to hell they tell this probe what to do with itself!") I hope he has the chops to pull it off but rarely has anyone been able to make it happen.

Hey Chewtoy, don't give anybody any ideas, this might be the impetus Hollywood needs to stop remaking movies directly and focus on prequel shit. We've already had young Indy and the Star Wars debacle. We don't need Robocop 0: Murphy the early years, the Young Freddy Krueger Adventures or Rambo: The Nam saga.

Call me easy, but even with the glossy "Gossip Girl/90210"-ish Pine as Kirk, I still want to see the rest of the cast. BTW, isn't Spock's mom human? And what is up with Spock going all Sylar on Kirk? Spock was always completely unemotional from the beginning - why would he lose control at Starfleet then regain it while on the Enterprise? I hope Abrams attends to little niggling things like this, or all the Trekkers will have his head. I still can't wait to see this, though.

...you know why? One reason: it's written by crapmeisters Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci, they of shiftest The Island, horribly written Transformers (zero plot or character development), and the crap Zorro sequel (not that the first was amazing, but compare what Kurtzman & Orci did with the sequel with the work of Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio with the first). They suck. And if the writing sucks, the movie sucks. Maybe it'll be mildly entertaining at best, but that's it, so stop hosing your shorts. And don't give me any of this, "who cares if the script has any depth or character development, we just want fun & explosions!" Wrong, Iron Man & Dark Knight proved the best path to great thrills is an intelligent script, and these two jerkoffs have proven over & over that they cannot deliver.

My curiosity stems mainly from the fact that JJ Abrams is behind it-- and really, I'm not sure why somebody would abandon a show like "Lost" to work on stuff like "Mission Impossible" or "Star Trek". Sure, they might be good, but they aren't his creations-- it's a bit weird for him to leave one of his own behind. That said, just because I'm not a "Star Trek" fan doesn't mean I'm not curious about the franchise in general, or that I haven't enjoyed it now and again. It's just not a high priority for me, the way "Star Wars" is. Perhaps this is the better statement-- JJ's "Trek" could go either way with me. If it's good, fine. If it's bad, I'm not going to care too much, because I don't have any real emotional investment here. Not in the way a real fan does, so I'm mostly just an outside observer. Besides, if it opens on a Friday, I'll probably be at home watching "The Clone Wars", anyway, so it's a moot point.

I just hope they have strong chemistry together, like the OS and NG casts had. They were a family-unit. If these guys jive with each other on that level, this might be the first of many. JJ has his moments, right? LOST is great, and I've heard Mr. King has considered him to interpret the Dark Tower series...not that I'm sure if THAT'S a good idea or not.

It won't replace the old ones, obviously. Cause they're the originals and they're totally hilarious and campy and smart and dumb and awesome in a way that can't be recaptured, and really shouldn't be. Their sole job here is to reintroduce the original characters in a way that is both in touch with the original shows, but smart enough to connect with younger audiences without dumbing it down. Kids are smart these days. Well, you know, more tech savvy, more in tune with the actual future we're entering into. Don't be afraid to make it smart AND fun. And don't crawl up your own backstory's ass like the SW prequels did until the 11th hour redemption of the series (imho), ROTS decided to do it all right.

Only this site, maybe those douchebags at CHUD think their warped views on the "Star Wars" prequels is somehome god's honest truth, which of course they are dead fucking wrong. People love those movies, if not they would have made TPM a flop and no one would have bothered with the other two. The movies are under-appreciated, they will gain more respect as time moves on- fuck! TPM is ten years old almost! I've always said and have yet to be proven wrong, if you think those movies stink, you were never that big of a fan to begin with. As for Trek, I dig it and this shows some promise- there is at least some non-Berman life to it, so far at least. The Vulcan woman holding the baby is not Spock's mom you ignorant fuckholes! Wynona Ryder plays Spock's Ma, Amanda. Also, as long the Lord of the Rings exist, the prequels will never be considered "bad" in my book.

(Just out of curiousity, why do you think he would he have been sent there as punishment? It wasn't a penal colony, was it?)

I'm sure the movie will still be okay without this -- a facet of Kirk's past that was used in one episode, and then completely forgotten about and never mentioned again for the rest of the series -- but for whatever reason, it did stick with me. It was good pathos.

He needs to come in and write a star trek script with more Shakespeare and Sherlock Holmes references. Then ramble on about them on the director's cut DVD commentary track. Seriously, I do think he made the two best Trek films ever, at least the ones I enjoyed the most (II and VI), and I can't understand for the life of me, after how many episodes with the original cast, and how many Star Trek movies, what more there can possibly be said about Star Trek. Just quit milking it for money, leave it alone, let us enjoy what was because it cannot be brought back again. The original cast had unmatched chemistry. Let be.

08:43:55 PM
He's as big a star as ever (not just his girth). Emmy winner. And Shatner's not involved with this in any way? Hmmmm... that makes no sense. Actually, it does. Because if we heard the real Kirk's voice in this film, or were treated to short interludes of old Kirk reminiscing with Spock during the film, we'd be reminded how much no one else can play Kirk and anything else is an exercise in futility. And the filmmakers don't want that to happen. They're hoping we don't remember the real Kirk and compare Shatner to the new guy. Nothing against anyone working on this film, I'm sure they're giving it their all, I just think it's a losing battle. Especially if the script was turned in by two hacks.

Star Trek Reboot Problem
by Thunderbolt Ross
Nov 9th, 2008
09:59:45 PM
I think Star Trek is a unique property, in that it works on two very particular levels, but doesn't necessarily work on a third. The third is characters. The ST universe doesn't get by on its amazing characters - it gets by on the basis of its concepts and - and this is the point germane to this reboot - on its ACTORS. Yes.

The original ST is about those actors, and - let's face it - it's about the Shat. HE is what makes the character timeless. I think McCoy and Spock are similar, if to a lesser extent (nobody outshits the Shat!) and so the backstory on those characters isn't that compelling without their bizarre charms.

Ultimately TNG was the best way to continue ... Try and keep the spirit and expand on the concepts, flesh it out, enrich it. But with new characters. Revisiting the original crew with different people in the roles is a fool's errand. That being said, the movie may work but it's not going to really hit the spot for anyone.

As for that TPM trailer, it was the greatest movie I never saw.

great points there... yes, i think the love of ST comes almost purley out of its characters. Next is its innocence. The original actors are old or dead, so to do another one with those guys is out. To replace them with new actors and place it in the same time line as the original series would cause too much backlash, so where to go.. the only way is back.. it is wrong but it is the only way they can milk the cash cow one more time... forget integrity, its about the green back. Lets face it, the rule is if we watched the original series as kids on tv then this movie isnt for us. Remember how our parents used to tell us to turn down the music and that 'it wasnt like that in our time...' well guess its come full circle eh?

But I think it's important to distinguish between great characters as WRITTEN and great characters as the actors PLAYED them. I think Bones Spock and Kirk were good characters, but it was really about that group of actors, and that includes Sulu, Scottie, Uhura ... the whole gang. But the characters aren't so well-defined on the page that they can be played effectively by someone else. Well, I doubt it anyway.

I don't think it's going to be Muppet Babies or 90210. And I don't for a second think it will be TOS. I'm just anxious to see if it has the stuff. Listen, I love Star Trek and I always will. JJ is an overrated hack, and that Trek, however much you want to over-write it, is lame. Always was, always will be, no matter how much you try to 'Top Gun' Kirk no-one in a mainstream audience will want to see this. Its too uncool, period. Star Wars fans expect too much, the prequels aren't nearly as bad as you make out, and some Trek films are pretty good too, at best. Says a lot about Hollywood that they can't even write an original space movie any more, given all the remakes and reboots, surely a Galactica remake is due again? The times he did disobey orders were for those reasons alone, never because he was trying to be "the cool guy who gets chicks". I will not be seeing this garbage, and I suggest as many of you who have better things to do (a stretch, I know), should join me in boycotting this muck. PINENOTKIRK.COM should be going up soon. It says that he's a spoiled rich kid acting out rebelliously to get attention. I realize that most people assume that he comes from a rural poor farming family, but this isn't actually true. His family was traditional military officers, and they had some money to go with that. It shows that even the most valuable vehicle one could possibly own in that time period was nothing to him. ...who are genuine fans of ST:TOS is that this film is going to infuriate long-time fans, for a bunch of reasons. A.) the script plays like "Top Gun in Space." B.) The production design (including the exterior of the Enterprise" is absolutely abysmal. People who've seen it says that "Galaxy Quest" has better set design; the Enterprise interiors look variously like "a sci-fi theme restaurant" or "the cosmetics counter at a department store." The Enterprise exterior is atrocious -- the ship has been enlarged to BSG size (it's way bigger than 1000 feet), and the proportions are awful -- a tiny secondary hull and gargantuan engines. (As my friends said, there's a reason Paramount isn't showing the whole thing yet -- the fans are gonna hate it when they see it.) C.) J.J. Abrams isn't a Star Trek fan -- he's a Star Wars fan, and it shows. D.) The scriptwriters have no love for TOS -- they grew up on The Next Generation, and their take on the characters is simply wrong. And finally, here's a plot detail that you read here first, to prove that I know what I'm talking about: there's a scene where the Enterprise does an atmospheric drop just like the Galactica in the "Exodus" ep (Abrams is a big BSG fan.) I'm seeing this film, but mainly for the ILM effects, the Michael Giacchino score, and because of Simon freaking Pegg as Scotty. (And don't get me started on how stupid it is to have a pre-teen Kirk driving a vintage Corvette 200 years in the future.)

And that's why anyone who's a fan of the original show is going to hate it. However, kids today who think of ST:TOS in the same way that 30/40-somethings think of Captain Video in the 1950s, or even Flash Gordon in the 40s, will probably eat this crap up, and not even realize that the characters of Kirk, Spock and McCoy are totally off from their original counterparts.

But Kirk wasn't really a hellion, right?

I mean, didn't that "Shore Leave" episode wherein Kirk sees his old tormentor Finnegan establish that young James T. was a kind of bookish, nerdy guy? I haven't seen that episode in years but I thought it was stated or at least very strongly implied that he wasn't a crazy kid. Picard was but I didn't think Kirk was. Thinking of Kirk in that way always made the character more interesting to me. I could be wrong though.

blah blah 60's corvette..at least it's a something different!!! Piques my interest more than if they went for the space scene with the original Kirk monologue or something similar-lets face it, we will ALL see this movie! And then whine about it here 3 hours later! Bring on the trailer.....

I've seen rumors but nothing more. And has anyone other than these 2 "insiders" confirm that the trailer was previewed at Paramount?

Just asking...

Wasn't his father just a redshirt on a starship?

Why does every show have to involve high school?

Let me answer that question: the fags of Hollyweird think of nothing but teen boy meat.

I'm watching the directors cut (again). This version is so great and is really the only trek movie in my opinion that captures the feel of the OS, I doubt the new movie will capture that, although I do hope so.
