That is why the teaser(s) for this was in front of Wall-E and Kung Fu Panda, etc. I saw the first one the other day on cable(some of it), and thought the only funny bit was the flash-back to where Martin is remembering the Chinese woman telling him who to look for. That they are just getting the comedy,What was funny about the originals, COMPLETELY WRONG!!!! I am it is so wrong that it is 180o and diametrically opposed to what is right. For one Sellers could completely disappear in the role. You knew it was him but at the same time you couldnt see him you only saw clouseu. The odd thing is that Martin is a good enough actor and comedian to do that but he isnt. The Other thing the th really funny thing abou tthe originals was the intelligent and subtle Ironies! hear that again Ironies! which takes more intelligence to get and also more talent to pull off. On the surface yes there was alot of slapstick but it was normally followed up by irony. It seems these versions are going all Slapstick. It also seems in these clouseu tries to "play it off" or tries to "ignore" his screw up. Where as Sellers played it where he was actually displaying some kind of skill and was dead serious about it. thats another thing that is missing the Dead Pan. anyways enuff ranting

Just because he makes a bad movie, even a bad comedy, doesn't mean he's not funny anymore. Peter Sellers made a lot of bad, unfunny movies, but I never would have accused him of being entirely at fault. Steve Martin makes movies like Cheaper By the Dozen and Pink Panther because they make studios money. When you make a studio money, they are more likely to give you money to make a better movie that may carry less appeal, like Shopgirl or Bowfinger. Don't worry about Martin. He'll be back. In the meantime, read his fantastic book, Born Standing Up.

Steve Martin used to be funny without really trying. The Jerk, The Man with Two Brains. He played oddball characters in that wild and crazy way, only Steve Martin can. Classic Martin if you will. But then he started taking more drama/comedy roles. It seemed Martin was trying to be funny and kind of winking at the audience and saying - Hey look at me! Aren't I funny? That's what he's doing in these Pink Panther movies. Trying way too hard. Kids will love it, but adults see right through it. Ironically the last time we really saw classic Steve Martin was making kids laugh in Parenthood. The scene where he entertains the kids at his son's birthday party. For that moment classic Steve Martin comes back to us. If only he could channel classic Steve Martin again. I'd go see his movies.

Humour is just so subjective I guess. Made me laugh anyway and this trailer made me laugh- out loud on a couple of occasions- too. And anyway, any value that I put on you as a critic was just about destroyed by your very subjective dissing of Battlestar Galactica. Now, how wrong you got that was genuinely funny.

Whoever is behind the absurdly broad physical comedy and over the top yelling has only scratched the surface of the old movies. Clouseau was simply resigned to being a klutz. So he would try to play things off or ignore them, but he was never surprised, wide-eyed, and instantly screaming. The accent joke in the new movies are basically the actor making fun of the accent, instead of the character becoming annoyed that people don't understand him. What a shame. I feel sorry for the pink panther main theme most of all.

Harry's right, Martin's mistake is playing Clouseau too loudly. Rather than just playing the role, he's CONSTANTLY winking at the audience and hamming it up way over the top. Looks from the trailer like he's doing it again this time. Oddly, one person in the first remake did get it absolutely spot-on... Jean Reno actually plays a better Clouseau than Martin does. He should take a cue. Although, of course, Martin's hilarity has never exactly been low-key. So maybe he was just wrong for this to start. Still love the man, though.

Granted the first movie was pretty cookie cutter but this is probably my daughter's favorite live action movie. I will say the "I'd Like To Buy A Hamburger" scene is a classic & very funny bit from the first movie. I DVR'ed it off Showtime and she always makes me replay it all the time. So when she went to see High School Musical 3 with my ex-wife and saw the previews for Pink Panther 2 she immediately called me after all excited to go see it. So Pink Panther 2 will make at least $18 on opening weekend. Hopefully Martin & company will learn the lessons from what didn't work in the first one as well as what worked.

Why would Steve Martin not consider a role in a movie that was a box office success? According to boxofficemojo.com PP1 had a production budget of 80 mil and ended up grossing 158.8 mil worldwide - that's not bad profit correct? I think the only thing really going for it besides that is that it is very family friendly, not only to kids but also to grandma and grandpa. I personally did not like PP1 and will probably not see this one either.

...but if there's a market for it I don't really care. It is too bad that they didn't "reboot" it by actually going back to the originals and making them a little more adult. Anyway, Harry whats the deal with your dvd post? Maybe you're too busy to post it once a week. That's cool but why not hand it off to someone else? Igt seems like it is too much trouble for you anyway. You don't list anywhere close to the number of dvds released in a given week. Also the ones that you do list, about half of them you haven't even seen(either the original or that particular release) so you'll say looking forward to this. And of the ones you do actually watch, about half of them are blue ray and your criticism is mostly "this looks awsome in blue ray". Hell I don't even have a blue ray(yet) but I could say that without even watching one. Be pretty easy. So why not give it to another writer that watches the dvds, actually reviews them, and maybe at the bottom list what else is available that week. And maybe they will actually post it on fucking time.

he just inhabited the character, someone who truly does not recognize how out of touch they are--Sellers was a genius at doing that. I like Steve Martin, but this Panther stuff is not suited for him at all, and his interpretation is just horrifyingly bad--like he is trying to be annoying and cloying rather than funny and interesting. Seller's Clouseau was a sympathetic character you liked, Martin's is one you want to see die--he has put us all in the role of the Chief. I bet Steve Carrell could have pulled of a remake better.... But there is no need for remakes of these.

SM had his hearing messed up when a blank round went off beside him during 'the 3 amigos'. Gave him tinnitus, permanent ringing of the ears, and it can mess with your head if you let it. Maybe it threw of his comic timing or something, although he did say he got used to it. I'm not his biggest fan , but he was great as the straight man in "Planes, trains and automobiles', and 'The man with 2 brains' is is funniest 'solo' film imo. I have not watched the trailer yet, don't know if I'll bother. Never ever want to see the Sgt Bilko remake he did either.

Do you have any idea how fucking wonderful The Jerk, The Man With Two Brains, and Martin's early stand up stuff is? Even reading "Born Standing Up" has convinced me he's still capable of greatness, I don't see why he doesn't push himself harder though. He can't need money, and that "I'm making films for families/children" can only go so far. I find it impossible to believe while Martin was filming this, he actually believed it to be funny. He probably did his scenes, went to his trailer, and just sat in contemplation. Maybe he needs to re-team with Reiner. And I'm glad to see someone else mention Matin's cameo in The Muppet Movie. Every detail of it is hilarious.

Since that is one of my favorite sounds in the world, I don't give a rat's ass what it is he's laughing at (well, I may draw the line at Carrot Top). You think I'm offering it as an excuse? Hardly. It's not an excuse--it's a simple fact: hearing your children laugh is a joy beyond compare, and for that gift I will put up with stuff I don't particularly like. Jean Reno. Rather than Clouseau-as-buffon, he could play the role straight, with the comedy coming from the wacky stuff that happens TO him? In interviews he comes across as pompous and self-congratulatory, consistently placing himself on a comedy pedestal he may or may not deserve. His book "Shop Girl" could have easily been titled "In defense of an old man fucking young women." I don't know if he's trying to hard because his material gave him a dunder-headed reputation when he was younger or what. But his I'm-so-intelligent-that-you-ne ver-saw-it-coming ruse seems thin to anyone with half a brain, and to step into the shoes of Sellers and The Pink Panther with anything other than reverence and demand for an absolutely hilarious script is an abomination.
