Yeah, I don't agree with the idea of remakes in general (only when there is something to fix) and there is absolutely nothing to fix with OLDBOY! It is a perfectly harrowing movie that will have you on the edge of your seat. To have Spielberg and Smith helming it means that it would be a "brighter" more "American" version of it and there's nothing "bright" about the movie. Maybe they are shooting or a Departed effect and win awards and what not for being unoriginal lame brains. This movie is going to be remade whither we like it or not (but mostly not) and the thing we can do is not see this movie and hope for it to be total shit so as to prompt people to see the better and ORIGINAL version. Go see Slumdog Millionaire, best movie of 2008!

And that's the basic premise of a guy being put in confinement for 15 years for no apparent reason. Other than that the ENTIRE film is in service to its own vulgarity. And I mean that in a good way. It absolutely refuses to flinch. What exactly do they hope to accomplish here? While I don't think it's one of the best films ever made like a lot of the people on this site do, I think what it has going for it is so utterly original and un-American that its potentially career destroying among the cinephile set to attempt it in a big budget setting with two larger than life figures at the helm. It's novelty is it's subversiveness. The film hinges on where it ends up and where it ends up is so utterly twisted that it would immediately alienate any paying American uninitiated audience. I think the only reason most viewers could deal with the ending is that the film is so foreign that there is automatically a safe enough distance mentally by the time the hammer falls. And Will SMith????!! Why is Spielberg so eager to work with this guy?? I can see him now all false bluster and face twisting vulnerability with his hair slightly grayed but yet of course impeccably ripped and confident to a fault. Hell I hope its that way because I doubt he could competently pull off anything else.

This film is best in it's true, pure original form. As talented as Spielberg and Smith are the subject matter is, IMHO, beyond what they could do. To not represent it in a respectful manner is a travesty and an insult. 1.Harry did a commentary? I can't understand the idea of a commentary by someone who didn't work on the film / show - like Cody Diablo on Spaced. If Spielberg wants to do it I'm pretty sure he has a good idea for it. I don't know if anybody else has noticed this but the guy knows how to direct a movie. Go ahead and take a look at his filmography if you don't believe me. I think you will be surprised. There are some good ones on there. I say don't bother getting up in arms because there's about a negative 250% chance it will be a retread of the original. I imagine he is interested in the basic premise of a dude being imprisoned for reasons he doesn't understand and not so much in the ludicrous explanation at the end. It'll be a totally different entity and will be a chance for Tom Hanks to take a nap while Spielberg experiments with a different superstar. Don't get me wrong, OLDBOY is a good movie and all but I think you boys have put it on a bit too much of a pedestal. Just because it has a cool hammer scene doesn't mean it's a way of life we must die to protect. And I say a loosely inspired riff by one of the best living directors is better than the Americanized re-enactment we've been promised for years. I bet they won't even call it OLDBOY anyway. If they make it. Plus, isn't the movie based on some japanese comic strip or something? Could I request that the fans of that please express their shock and outrage at what the Koreans did to their beloved original version?

Is what we feel on the character's behalf for what's happened to him. The hallway/hammer scene is necessary to move the story on to what happens afterwards. Without this portrayed in a graphic, cathartic way, the character's trapped in the first act - we're still waiting for catharsis. The horrendous ordeal the first act puts the protagonist through calls for an equally horrendous climax/end of the act (look to Shakespeare). These 2 elements have to be equal or it fails. If they tone down the retribution for the kiddies, then they must tone down the ordeal (not as long in captivity): Again it fails. Don't wanna tell you how to suck eggs, but be true to the story Mr Spielberg, or it's a lame duck.

If they do insist in fucking with this classic than atleast try and give a damn about it's origin and don't just make it another struggling lead actor (cough... Nic Cage... cough) cash in vehicle. The point of the Dae-Su character so excellently played by Choi Min-sik was that he wasn't a hard bastard to start with but became one through his isolation and psychological torture. The transformation is more akin to something like say James McAvoy in Wanted. Bad analogy but you catch my drift. Putting a hard bastard actor in the role defeats the object of the story. Hey, I love Spielberg the same as most other movie fans, and Jaws is pretty much my favourite movie, but I don't ever want to see a remake of this film - and especially not with Will Smith, who already butchered the character of Robert Neville for me. I love OldBoy. This is just wrong on every level. For a start, there is no way, no way at all that they will keep the original ending. No way will anyone in authority let Smith be depicted on screen (SPOILER) shagging his own daughter, consciously or unconsciously - and then specifically choosing to wipe his own memory so he can carry on shagging his own daughter. I just can't imagine a Hollywood film having the balls to go to the places that Park and his wonderful lead actor did, to make the audience almost pleased when the 'hero' gets a 'happy ending' that is really a fucking tragedy. You just know the reason they decided to remake this film was the fucking hammer fight - someone saw it and thought, check out this cool Asian flick - makes me wonder if they actually watched and understood the whole thing. And you just know the hammer fight is gonna be the centrepiece of the whole thing, in all the trailers. This is SHIT. OldBoy is the only film EVER, in all my years of cinemagoing, to literally make me jump up out of my seat and swear out loud at the end, and one of the few to stay in my thoughts for days afterwards. I've never ranted on this site before, but this has really pissed me off. Sorry Spielberg, but to hell with this crapfest. It you can't do it properly, don't do it at all. There's just no need.

Spielberg seems to want to return to his roots: a fourth Indy, a SciFi epic also coming up, and now he maybe wants to disturb and scare the freakin sh*t outa people again. He's a magic man, and I don't see why a dreamer can't make a nightmarish film. If he has a good rewrite of the original, it could work. He has to go for it no holds barred, though. Or they twist it into a totally different direction. Let's face it: Scorcese's version of "Infernal Affairs" was far inferior to the original, still the people loved it. BUT I don't see Will Smith in there. Maybe Smith wants to break out of the confines of the generic stereotype roles he's getting, but I don't see how he could pull it off. Will Smith as the bg mastermind? Yes, that could work. But Gandolfini? No way. I'd go for someone like John Leguizamo, Casey Affleck etc.

As a father, I can tell you this movie freaked me the hell out. I despaired of life for Dae-Su . . . I was trucking along, all cool with the revenge premise and the twist kinda made me want to puke. Spoiler: the tongue scene is very non-western; I can't think of anyone from the west thinking this is a solution. I never want to see this movie again in any incarnation - not because it was bad, but because it freaked and bummed me out for days. Unless they have a credit 'based on the premise' of "Oldboy", I can't imagine U.S. audiences buying it. For the folks knocking the movie, I just can't see the dislike of the product.... I disliked the way I felt afterward, but it's a compelling story. If you cast this, it has to be with someone unassuming; that's what the scene in the beginning is with Dae-su in the police station. Giamatti could pull it off. But I don't want him to. Leave this one alone.

I am most certainly and completely NOT on board with this idea. I am among those that absolutely adore Oldboy and I completely agree with everything Harry is saying here. That great, unexpected, shocking ending is the key to it all. To follow such brilliant setup and not know that we're being set up for such a disturbing conclusion is what makes this movie resonate for me. I am really afraid that an American remake (no matter who is involved) will be watered-down and ineffective.

It's a bizarre development. I'm just saying for a couple years they've been planning a straight remake by Justin Lin starring Nic Cage. OF COURSE that would've been either terrible or a limp re-enactment of the original. If Spielberg really is directing it I have no idea what it will be, except that it has a much better shot of being good or great. And most likely will be a completely different spin on the story. But I'd rather see him make 3 more Indiana Jones movies because I'm sure you weiners would have alot of worthwhile insights into why using CGI in that one part is on par with genocide.

Just hard to imagine it would be. Even harder to imagine is why? I can see Will Smith pulling this off. Say what you want to about I Am Legend, but he was very solid. As an actor I think hes willing to push himself, hes said multiple times the biggest regret of his career is not going further with Six Degrees with showing the homosexual stuff. I can see him pulling this charachter off. The strange part is why? Millions of people will go to this expecting Hancock and leave freaked out. It certainly doesnt seem to make buisiness sense. Then I think, yeah but cruise went and made Eyes Wide Shut and Magnolia which certainly pushed some buttons. So, we do have an example of a huge movie star taking risks with "good taste" and retaining most of his cache. But then the really weird part is Speilberg. Tom Cruise was given a pass because he was working with Kubrick and PTA not the director of Jaws. Speilberg even more than smith is a brand name. Yes he has made some great films, and some like Munich or Schindler can be very dark. He has never been subversive. The director of this film needs to be someone who has no empathy for this charater and that is one thing I dont think are among Speilbergs many gifts. Who knows maybe Im wrong, but this is ver weird.

Seriously don't get the "fanboy" reaction to the worlds biggest box office draw. I thought it had, grudgingly, been accepted now that he's a pretty decent actor. There a million ways to mess up this film, and a small number to get it right. Why assume that it's gonna be done wrong? More to the point if it is going to be messed up why assume Spielberg and / or Smith are gonna wreck it. The cuts, watering down (IF there is any) will come from the studio / money men. In fact the best hope for the fime reaching a LARGE audience intact is the 2 guys being complained about. Hell, if you can't get an audience to watch a SPielberg directed Will Smith starring, movie then you will never get it to a bigger audience. That's the problem, people not watching Oldboy just because it isn't in English, let alone because of how disturbing it is. more people watched "The Departed" than infernal affairs (prob 1,2 & 3). That was a good film, I'm sure there are those who'd actually try to argue for it above the original. (Not me, I own both but prefer the "grander" arc of infernal affairs 1 & 2, even 3 was good but not the same level I thought. I'm sure we all have our ideas of who we think might best do this, if it must be done, but I honestly have no reason to assume this version can't work. Ridley Scott and Denzel. David Fincher & someone totally unexpected... Robert Downey jnr or Christopher Ecclestone or Tom Hanks. How weird would Tom hanks be in that role? (get Vinnie Jones some work!! :) Seriously though, hating the successful guy who actually HAS talent is getting old isn't it? The Manga was much different than the movie. I've heard the original movie version is a more "Stir fried" version of the Manga. The manga is pretty straightforward. No real kink to it. Spielberg could base it more on the comic book. But really I think Spielberg's will be a movie more based on the jumping off point, "man imprisoned for 15 years for no reason seeks his imprisoner". There's a lot of ways you can go with just that alone. Ultimately I think they will be two way different things. Also if anyone knows where harry's commentary track can be found on the dvd let me know. I have the original release and the special tin box edition but I don't remember a harry commentary track on either.

Although there are many ways that a black person can have a child that appears extremely white. There are mixed race twins / siblings where one is "white" in appearance and another mixed race or black in appearance. Of course that's not what you meant so to answer that point: changing the colour of "white" characters to redress a historical imbalance, wherin more "white" characters were created as they 2sold" better, or would stand a chance of being published / filmed at all is no big deal is it really? many characters had their sex or colour changed simply to get made at all. Who knows what sex, or colour many established characters would have been if they'd been created in a more "liberal" media? You wanna worry about race in hollywood? how about their "any Asian will do" approach to to casting Oriental characters. You need aa Japenese character, hire a Korean. Instead of eating octopus at a diner, the first place he visits is a pet shop. Hamster? Snake? Both? Lots of directions to go there. Instead of fighting with a hammer it's a length of razor wire or maybe hatchet. In this version of the movie the main character should have no problem (ahem) completing his masturbatory television watching and this should be graphically obvious to the captors watching through the glass walls as well as to the audience. The incest gay sex scenes should be non-simulated and Big Willy should be the bottom. Now THIS would be a remake of Oldboy that would raise a few eyebrows in ol' Hollywood and get Spielberg and Will Smill the attention they deserve!

Spielberg has made some of the most entertaining films of the past 30 years AD some of the best films of the past 30 years. Sometimes he manages both at the same time. ( you know what I mean). The fact that he has made a relatively tiny number of average films, and a smaller number still due to his direction should not earn him such disrespect. As for Will Smith. As I said earlier, apparently, it's still cool not to like him in places like this, as oppossed to the large number of people who like him as an actor and / or a personalatiy (velebraty). But of course they are all mindless idiotic sheep right? If the guy can't convince you he has talent after Ali & Pursuit, and even I am Legend, (Which I acknowledge SOME people don't like as a movie, even though I find trouble seeing how Smith's performance in that film makes them feel that way?), then he's never going to. The question is how much of that is down to the indiviuals watching more than his performance. A lot I'd say.

Look at The Departed... it treated the audience like slack jawed yokels and had a 100% inferior ending. So what makes people think that Spielberg is gonna surprise us? Well he did already... It was just all sorts of terrible. Why does James Bond get away with playing Jewish people in all of his non Bond movies? Now maybe because I had just seen Schindler's List for the first time like a month before i saw Munich, and i have seen One Day In September that my opinion was a little biased toward expecting something remotely as good as those two movies. It just felt way too Edward Zwick (minus the stolen scene from Rambo and the ending from Happy Feet like the Dimond movie). That being said, I agree with Harry, make William Smith as the bad guy (ala Denzel style, LOOK I CAN DO BAD GUYS TOO!) and Thomas Jane as the main guy. But if you can't get Thomas Jane PLEASE PLEASE! don't settle for that cheap Thomas Jane lookalike, Aaron Eckhart.

Oldboy is reasonably entertaining, but at the same time one of the stupidest movies ever made. It would be very hard to come up with a plot that is less probable (people have tried - see 'haute tension'). Maybe I am just overly sensitive to the hypnosis gimmick, which is about as exiting as 'it was all a dream'.

If you love the movie and don't want to see it remade then that's legitimate though, I understand that. But look, THE DEPARTED is a good example. I can understand some people liking INFERNAL AFFAIRS better. But then there are people who pretend THE DEPARTED is some generic Hollywood garbage because they saw the Hong Kong version. At that point how are we supposed to have a serious discussion? If you want to show off that bad just wear a sequined cape or something. In conclusion, FUCK THIS REMAKE, I bet it will be good though. They do it on the stage thousands and thousands of times, with little-known directors in small cities giving a different take to the story or staging, etc. So why can't Hollywood remake JAWS sixteen times if they want to? They've been "remaking" or "retelling" or "reimagining" books, plays, comics and movies for almost as long as they have been making movies. remake with sound, remake with colour, someetimes better, sometimes worse, sometimes just different. Shakespear shouldn't have had one of his plays performed for how many centuries now? let alone made / remade as films? That hack Kurosawa! How dare he make "Ran". That said "A Fist Full of Dollars" and "The Magnificent 7" should never have been made. Staying on Kurosawa how about Star wars, (a stretch but very tenuously a "reimagining" of "The Hidden Fortress". The hating remaakes game is a dangerous one to play as some of the best movies of all time are remakes of some form or other, and it is the right of any artists to want to put their spin on a "good" story. Every actor wants to be a goood "King Lear", or "Macbeth". (O.k not literally EVERY actor, but you know what I mean. OH and emeraldboy... I think that's why YOU hate Will Smith, evidence suggests that most people actually like him a lot. The money a mess like Hancock (good idea either edited / cut to death or ruined some other way. Almost any other actor and that movie makes sub $100m US and sub $200 worldwide. Everything is derivative. What people bitch and moan about here is the last 5-7 years of film remakes, requels, rewhatevers that have dominated the work of potentially creative filmmakers, studios that only want to cash in on films that have already been made in much higher quality. Don't go off on the books, TV shows, etc. In one way or another, everything is derived from the idea of something else but that is not the same as taking a title and premise from a previously made film and making it again for the sake of "updating it for a 'modern audience'", "bringing the story to western audiences", what have you. Here comes another diluted American adaptation of a FINE fucking film that left me feeling kinda dirty and sad after it ended. Spielberg? Really? This is more like Todd Solondz territory. I fucking dare Spielberg to recreate that fight sequence and not get shit on. Just retitle it and say "inspired by the original film..." and it won't have so much to live up to. This film might even be good in its own right if they go that route.

I have huge respect for will smith. as it happens. I dont agree with his beliefs. not at all. Smith has made more money than all those gangster rappers combined. Will smith is a genius. He used his rap skills to launch his tv career. Which ran for 7 years. He had the smarts to end his career on tv with an episode where he ends up going to hollywood. The final episode of the fresh prince was as joyous a piece of tv. as you can get. as far i can recall the whole crew did the conga, leaving the set and out of the studio. Smith knows that real colour of hollywood is green. but he has never forgotten that he is actor. He is very talented. Rent six degrees of seperation. He had to play a liar and conman and he was great. His success his simple. He is an optimistic and positive american and he exudes this in interviews. People like will smith. and finally he was brought to respect his elders and his grandmother was strict with him. He went to church on sundays. I like will smith. and I respect him.

OLDBOY is one of those movies that my friends have been telling me for some years to check and that its just one of those films that grabs you by the ball and squeezes while telling you "whose your daddy bitch!" I've seen some of it and even know most of the parts, and DAMN! if I didn't bust my ass trying to find it. Now Whorewood wants to remake yet ANOTHER movie that CANNOT be duplicate in any way, shape or form. Like some have mentioned, call it something else and tag it "...inspired by the filme OLDBOY..." then you can do what you want, but a fucking remake?!?! Look at the fucking track record of remakes/rehash/reimagined/refu cked movies that came out!! They SUCK PIG ASS! And NONE comes close to the dark subject that OLDBOY deals with. There is absolutely no fucking way that OLDBOY can be rewhatever, in WHOREWOOD, with the same dark subject matter! Plus Speilberg has sucked for years, and for him to EVEN think of directing this movie is ridiculous! OLDBOY is just way to dark and twisted for him. There are other directors that have more grit and a fucked up mind to actually TRY to pull this off--but not Stevie! What is the darkest subject that Stevie has ever done? The Holocaust, slavery; those are some dark subject but is it even close to the crazy shit in OLDBOY? And Will Smith has too much of "clean" image. A few people have mentioned the film having a different title ( I believe The Departed is not Infernal affairs?) and then it's easier to be "inspired" by. I'd like to know why we all KNOW that aint gonna happen anyway. How we know it's meant to be some direct English language translation of the "oldboy" script instead of a new version of a film where a guy gets locked up for years and released to find out why. We don't, so why complain? Remember Ran, The Magnificent 7, A Fistfull of Dollars, Ben Hur (3rd version!), Maltese Falcon (3rd version .ta Vern), pick a version of Romeo & Juliet you like (Baz's was brave) hell even argue for Dark Knight / Batman begins. As with almost all things in life, it matters if something is done well, pure and simple. I find it quite incomprehensible that there are people oout there that prefer Willy Wonka to Burton's Charlie and the chocolate factory. As a kid who loved the book I found Burton's version far more faithfull, and thus to ME a better film. I also found other aspects far superior, but there are plenty who think the "original" version is far better. ( a disturbing number of them never read the book I find.) Anyway, why not wait and see how it turns out eh?

All countries contributed something to the filmmaking process at the start. America created hollywood. Hollywood ignored the rest of the world in terms of cinematic output. actors, directors and writers come to hollywood to escape the narrow confines of their own countries filmmaking process. hollywood, for better or worse is where it happens. nobody in hollywood has possibly ever seen oldboy. america is america. Hollywood knows that americans couldnt really give a shit about a korean film about a man who has spent a long time being impriosend and taking revenge. hollywood also understands that americans are ignorant about korean films(the host is being remade). How many americans have seen oldboy. apart from the people on this site. not many. so Speilberg comes along and says that he and will smith are remaking oldboy. I am a huge fan of roald dhal and I loved Charlie and the choclate factory. Why is it such a heretical thing to remake a film that few have seen. its like music. Remakes is the wrong word. recycling is a far better word. MOrdern artists redoing old songs. maybe heresy to some. however. these artists are bringing old songs to new generation. so the logic goes. some directors like the berg have grown up on foreign films. and have used them in thier movies to those filmmakers those foreign are very influential. US audiences are not going to know about those influences and will have never heard of oldboy.
