I gotta say that, even with pretty high expectations, I found Rambo to be absolutely sensational. Stallone grew leaps and bounds as a director and the final shootout (well, massacre really) was as spectacular and epic as the shootout in Heat. Some of the gore CGI was a bit dodgy, but the level of intensity, the sheer brutality of it, and the way Stallone put it together made it into an epic action sequence, on par with The Wild Bunch, The Killer and Scarface. Like those films, the Rambo shootout does not feel like a Hollywood action sequence and has a very palpable feeling of despair, as if you were watching real people fight for their lives. So, this movie sounds like a perfect follow-up vehicle for Sly. I tell you, the more I watch this guy, the more I love and respect him. Every time people had written him off, he turned around and came back faster and stronger. Rocky Balboa felt even more honest and real and gritty than the first movie. And, if anything, more compelling, especially Sly's monologue before the boxing commission.

by StraightToHell

is still not one of the best and most entertaining pure action films of the 80s. Just watched it again recently, and it's just so refreshing to see a cop be so brutal with murderers. Too many movies since try to paint shooting degenerate scumbag killers as an immoral thing to do. Considering that the laws now favor the guilty even more than the innocent, there is something so satisfying in watching Sly hang that bastard up on a hook at the end. And every time I see someone in the media nowadays wring their hands over some criminal thug that just got wasted because he " had a bad childhood", I just wish one of the cops said what Sly says in the beginning of Cobra, when a reporter bitches to him about not treating the killer right. Stallone grabs the smarmy cocksucker by the lapels throws open a sheet that's covering a body of an innocent shopper that was shot in the back by the killer, and says "You tell that to his family!!!" Awesome!

Come on! It was a Rambo movie. Rambo was on a mission saving the world from evil. What more do you need? It also had kick ass action and a great mercenary team. It also said something about if you really wanna "win" in a war situation, you gotta be ready to put youre on life on the line, unlike many soldiers that go to war to have a great adventure. This is real stuff, real bullets and some dangerous shit. So if you really wanna win you have got to sacrafice, something most people are just not willing to do.

StraightToHell, that last action scene in RAMBO is one of the most epic and amazing action set pieces put on film. It threw everything at you but the kitchen sink...I LOVED every bloody minute of it. BUT so was the scene when RAMBO yells "FIRE OFF A SHOT" and then what happens next with that amazingly shot set up action set piece involving that bomb that could be nuke-like! WOW. And VERN, yes, great title and if Sly plays his cards right this could be one action movie that stars aligned for...pure bad ass, pure testostorone...pure action...pure STALLONE!

Stallone Versus The Franchise Resurrection
by Spandau Belly
Nov 6th, 2008
12:34:28 PM
Seeing as Stallone is the only guy who can resurrect and old series and make a movie that actually feels like a reasonable sequel and not some sort of homage/parody I think we need a movie where Stallone has to travel back in time stop this thing where it started.

Yes, that's right, I want a movie where Stallone travels back to the early 1990s and takes down the production of Godfather 3. Francis will call in his squad of helicopters from Apocalypse Now, but Stallone will take them down, Sofia Copola will bust out ninja skills and ultimately get blown to dust, Andy Garcia will get wasted, and so will that little dog that runs around Pacino's dead feet at the end.

The film will end with an alternate history showing a brighter world in which there was never an Indy 4, Alien 4, Terminator 3 or 4, and all the children of the world dance in joy.

In praise of Jason Statham
by palimpsest
Nov 6th, 2008
01:58:25 PM
He's in grave danger of actually becoming a movie star. He knows the moves, he's authentically agile enough to pull of most of his own stunts, plus (and crucially) he plays this stuff straight. And that's what fucked up the likes of Diesel, Dwayne and the others who wanted to be Arnie more than they wanted to be action stars. Statham is more like an Eastwood - someone who's prepared to put 25 years in the trenches, and not fuck with the badass muse. He learned one thing early - don't attempt an American accent - and he's getting better and better in each movie. DEATH RACE may not be classic cinema, but just watch Statham in it. He knows what he's doing; he knows enough not to play ridiculous things for easy comedy.

by NoHubris

02:51:17 PM
Dirty Dozen is a favorite of mine and it'll be great to see Sly take up Lee Marvin's mantle - "You're not gonna hurt me, I'm gonna hurt you."(Lee Marvin as Major John Reisman in DIRTY DOZEN)
Cameron was king of sequels until he left the game
by ABking
Nov 6th, 2008
03:05:29 PM
James Cameron use to be the "god" of making sequels. The man directed ALIENS and T2...that alone makes Cameron the all time king. Add TRUE LIES 2 as a sequel the man was going to direct at one point and we all can only imagine what that would have looked like...maybe QUANTUM OF SOLACE. Anyways, since Cameron s last possible sequel was going to be TL2 (and his last action film was True Lies), the man has lost the throne to SYLVESTER STALLONE. Sly directed ROCKY BALBOA to amazing effect and then he finally directed an action film. What he did with RAMBO is what Cameron or Spielberg would have done...high octane, in your face, awesome fucking wild action. Now Sly announces a new action film called THE EXPENDABLES and most are giving the man high praise...and for great reason. If Sly directs this new film and it blows everyone away, then follows up and directs RAMBO 5 and destroys everyones expectations, James Cameron will have to bow down to the man like the shogun of harlem. It would take TRUE LIES 2 as a modern day action film (AVATAR & BATTLE ANGEL don't count) for him to come back to his T2 and TRUE LIES action days of god-dom. Thank you SLY for still making real hard ass action films!

The one major failure in Stallone's career was that he chose to be in too many movies that were vehicles to mainly feature himself. Two of my favorite Sly movies are "Assassins" and "Demolition Man" because he had a formidable opponent who was an actual somebody in Hollywood. So, news of sharing the screen with Statham and possibly Li is good news. Stallone definitely needs to co-star in more movies at this point if he wants to be successful.
