Seriously I have a memory of watching Universal Soldier 2 on TV then seeing no 3 the next week. Anyway WTF I love Dolph at least as good as Jean - they should bring in Grace Jones so that they have three soldiers for the third movie.

At least sequels are the next logical step in the storytelling process. But the universe of a prequel can't logically spring into being AFTER the original.

yes there was a Universal Soldier 2 and even a Part 3. but as i mentioned earlier, they were shitty canadian DTV movies. Part 2 went even as far as to redo the last few minutes of the first movie. i'm sure they're not available much outside canada so The Return is probably considered 2 hence why this new one would be part 3 but yeah....its still wrong on so many levels.

but I dug Sound of Thunder. I know the CGI was pretty corny, but that's what gave the movie this kind of odd charm. Hyams is also a superb DP and this movie looked pretty damn great. Very dark. I think that Hyams really was a very underrated director in his prime. For a while he was going from a solid movie to a solid movie non-stop. Capricorn One, 2010 (which is a pretty awesome film on its own apart from 2001), Outland (one of Connery's best films), The Star Chamber, Timecop, Narrow Margin. And lets not forget one of the best buddy action/comedies of all time - Running Scared. This is a movie that just keeps getting better with age. It's crammed with hilarious one-liners, has terrific action sequences and features the best performances of Gregory Hines and Billy Crustal's careers. I can quote this movie all day long. "Hey, you shot my partner!" "Takes it easy, you're upsetting the prisoners." "Why should THEY be upset you didn't shoot THEM!!!"

...Dolph is retired from acting. Supposedly had a bad experience making his last film. He might have said no to them and they are just spinning it. On the other hand if Mr. Hyams is attached, and the paycheck is good, why say no?

Seriously, Dolph is important to those of us who might actually care to see it -- ESPECIALLY if it is a straight-to-DVD release. I'm a fan of the original and I'd want to see them both in it. That is what made the movie special. It wasn't the story. It wasn't just JCVD. It was watching JCVD vs. Ivan Drago. And today, I still want to see them duke it out or pair up. Either way, if they don't bring back Dolph, the jokers behind this movie are making a big error. If you are going to make a movie that needs to appeal to the fanboys, do it the f*ck right. What a way to kill the excitement about this movie.

Outland and 2010. Outland is unbelievably atmospheric and is photographed on the level of Alien and Blade Runner. In fact, I'll go as far as to say that Cameron got the majority of the look of Aliens from Outland. The whole blue-collar workers in space (albeit started in Alien) was clearly a big influence on Cameron in Aliens. And Connery is just magnetic. Probably his most sublte and underrated performance ever. His moments of silence (especially towards the end) have more to say than pages of dialogue. But Hyams clearly deserves a lions' share of credit for the movie. And 2010, if it wasn't related to 2001, would probably be considered one of the best sci-fi's of last 20-30 years. It has a brilliant cast (Scheider has never been better), has special effects (NO CGI you fuckers) that STILL hold up to this day, and is very very smart and respectful of science. Again, Hyams deserves tons of credit for this. Now, The Relic is not a great movie, but the monster is pretty cool and there are some truly scary moments, like seeing Tom Sizemore clean and sober :-) But I can't quite put my finger on what happened to Hyams of late. he did what he could for End of Days, and there are some effective scenes in the film, but it just didn't work. I didn't even bother seening the The Musketeer. Remember the one with John Ritter, Stay Tuned? Again, a few funny bits, but WTF? The Presidio is ok, with some pretty effective action scenes (and Connery in fine form again.) But the guy is clearly way more talented and competent to have this much of a drop in quality work. I wonder what happened. Interesting trivia, but, apparently, Hyams is pretty close friends with Cameron, and Cameron is the one who got Hyams the gig directing End of Days when Arnold was looking for a director.

aka Universal Soldier 2 (but really 4) was Van Damme's last theatrical film in the states. It was the final straw that resulted in all his subsequent films going DTV. So it's kind of amusing that a 3rd one will be a part of his attempted comeback.

And instead of Dolph, the Return had Goldberg and Michael Jai White. It was fucking terrible in every sense of the word.

I did a photoshoot here in LA of this guy's drum set for a music company. The guy happened to be the young kid/star of The Last Starfighter which i thought was cool. But what was more interesting was that, he told me, his uncle-in-law was Peter Hyams. I said "holy shit i love Peter Hyams!" and dude was like "how the fuck do you even know who Peter Hyams is?". Clearly he underestimated my geek credentials. Sorry for the lame story but if i was ever going to tell it, it was here in this talkback.

IMDB (yeah, I know) shows Hyams is currently directing / DP / screenwriting a Michael Douglas movie, a remake of the minor noir classic BEYOND A REASONABLE DOUBT. Hopefully he can pull off a good movie here - from PEEPER through to THE RELIC he had a solid 20 year run of geek-friendly movies, and he's got the best eye for lighting in the business.

Universal Soldier was a great movie... when I last saw it! Which was about 15 years ago! The Relic was the last Hyams movie I remember really liking, but I haven't seen that in 10 years either. Dolph Lundgren IS the epitome of the 80's Action Movies. Stallone, Arnold, Van Damme, and Seagal should all bow to this man's greatness. Red Scorpion, I Come in Piece, Showdown in Little Tokyo, the Punisher, Masters of the Universe, and Rocky IV. Van Damme should go back to making classics like Street Fighter or the Quest.
