I hope Cedric can pull it off too. Willie Dixon was an intricate part of Chess Records. I don't get Chess from Brody though. Supposedly, you couldn't tell him apart from the musicians in the records they have of him. That's just me being ridiculously picky though. I am really looking forward to this. I'm a great admirer of Chess Records.

I hate it when I read what I just wrote and find I forgot a word. Why is it so hard to put a complete sentence together in these talkbacks!

When I first heard the beginning of the song I thought it was the original.

Go listen to Etta James sing that thing, then listen to Beyonce. NO. COMPARISON.

That said, girl is still easy on the eyes.
Other than a little more raspiness in Etta's voice

They are comparable. I think the nostalgia factor and the inability to welcome anything that isn't the old thing is clouding people's minds. I could give two shits about Beyonce, but I have to say I watched the trailer twice and she sounds good. I don't see a legitimate gripe about the singing.

Really, jimmy? The inability to welcome anything yadda yadda? Stick to your day job, bud. Mindreading is not your forte. I don't have a problem with breathing life into a old classic. Some do well with it ("Heard it through the grapevine" was cool because it went in a totally different direction than Gladys' or anyone elses).

Everyone has a preference. The music from that age has a purity and authenticity that many of the current performers lack. Maybe it was the time, the simplicity of the technology, or just the right set of circumstances. And admittedly, Beyonce just sang a piece of "AT LAST", which isn't enough to give it a real honest critique. But Etta James WORKED a song, like most of the acts back in her day.

And because it IS my opinion, I still say NO. COMPARISON.

The fact you pose like an expert on the Blues in Internet forums proves it. They are comparable. Beyonce could have sung it better than anyone has ever sung it before and you'd say the same thing. But Etta James, WORKED it, whatever the fuck that means, so there you go. Case closed. No comparison. What a twit.

Beyonce did a pleasant and safe enough version from the part I heard, but she's never had the vocal power of an Etta James...or a Jennifer Hudson for that matter, which was the whole point of casting Hudson in Dreamgirls. It doesn't embarrass the original but it isn't a speck on it either.

After reading your comment again, I'd like to reaffirm my statement that you're a douche. Using "Really? The inability to yada yada?" If had a nickle for every douche I heard say "Really?" since Amy Poehler and Seth Myers ran it into the ground. You're really clever with that.

I am with you as a Etta James fan. There is not comparison. Beyonce sounds like Beyonce singing at last. There is no soul to it. I know we only heard like 30 seconds. But those 30 seconds of that song are the part that grabs you in the original. Nothing grabs in this version.

There has to be an unknown that could have really nailed Etta James. Nothing sounds like Etta James singing "At Last" and I think the music is really the heart of the story here. She looks interesting in the other dramatic clips though.
