Valkyrie & Benjamin Button. Hands Down. Even though the Saw score is a little misstep. This is definitely my most anticipated flick of the end of this year, along side Button. This movie just feels right. I don't care if it doesn't do well at the box-office. (Really, a Nazi-thriller starring Tom Cruise on Christmas...I just don't see it.) But I'll be there. This movie will rule.

I hate Cruise and his crackpot religilous, but Im glad someone has finally had the courage to make this movie. I remember decades ago when this was supposed to be a Schwartzeneggar project - anyone else recall that? Got temporarily postponed so he could do a little low-expectation sci fi flick called Terminator. When that became a franchise, his nazi movie was shelved.

Do you know how many people in Hollywood are quietly members? By watching movies and TV shows, you are supporting Scientology. For instance, if you watch My Name is Earl, the two male leads are both Scientologists. It is pretty hard to boycott, not to mention silly. Go live in a cave, and then you can be sure you aren't supporting Scientology.

Andrew Morton has the theory that this project was chosen to raise the accaptance of Scientology by letting the Scientology poster boy play a German hero. I have to say, I don't think this theory is as stupid as it sounds at first when you look at all the fuzz that has been made in Germany by the media people. He was even a media award for "courage". On the other hand, though, this does not quite seem to work. Frank Schirrmacher, who is the editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Germany's most important newspaper, gave the laudatio and basically made a fool of himself. He was later criticized and ridiculed everywhere. In his acceptance speech, Tom Cruise made a very bad faux pas by in the end saying "Lang lebe das heilige Deutschland" (long live holy Germany) which left a bad aftertaste even to the people who attended the awards ceremony. These words are very much part of the jargon used during the Third Reich and while everybody knew that Cruise meant it in a different way, people weren't too happy about this nonetheless. After the awards criticism has grown constantly (mainly because of his Scientology involvement) and at the moment, his image is very low in Germany. from looking at the trailer, I have to say that I am curious about the movie and I don't mind Tom Cruise playing Stauffenberg, but I have some problem with the way the story is presented. While Stauffenberg was part of a conspiracy against Hitler, these trailers make it look like he was fighting for democracy. This was not the case. While Stauffenberg realized the danger and evil that came from Hitler, he was pretty much an extremist himself. I don't mind making a movie out of these incidents but presenting Stauffenberg as a fighter for democracy and freedom in the world leaves a bad aftertaste to me.

Why the hell should any of them have german accents? Do you think in reality they were walking around talking to each other in english? Of course not, they were speaking German. 'The Hunt for Red October' got it right forever ago. Have the first couple minutes be in their native language with subtitles, then just switch to English and let everyone use whatever the hell accent they normally have.

Why isn't it legitimate to be bothered by the mixing of accents? I find it strange at best that all of these Germans are using English and American accents. The film is a biopic, why not have the actors use German accents? For CHAPLAIN Robert Downey Jr. used an English accent because Charlie Chaplina was fucking English!

anybody would know how crazy his beliefs have been for about two decades. After Eyes Wide Shut he didn't give a fuck anymore about hiding his opinions. He fired his long time publicist that kept a lid on him and brought in his sister, who also is a scientologist and started his cattle call of the next actress he was going to marry. Penélope Cruz, and a few others and if you believe what you hear, Scarlett Johansson was one he courted for Mission Impossible 3 and for his trophy too. If he would have kept his mouth shut nobody, outside of his inner circle would have known that he is batshit nuts!

Actors faking a German accent when playing a character speaking German is ridiculous; it's just a trope that people have gotten used to, like a sweat drop appearing on an anime character, or sepia tone to illustrate a flashback.

I'm glad they're dispensing with that nonsense. They're Germans in Germany, I think the audience can figure out that we're supposed to "pretend" they're speaking German.

You can't compare having an english accent versus a german accent in this case. Of course when the main characters would ACTUALLY be speaking english to each other the accent they speak in is important. Obvious example here is the kevin costner 'Robin Hood'. In that case they definitely should all have proper English accents. Which they didn't and it was distracting. But when you know that all the characters in a film wouldn't have even spoken English, the accent they speak english in doesn't matter. They would have been speaking German in reality anyway.

I, for one, am far too impressed by the cast to let incongruent accents keep me from being excited by this film. I mean, c'mon- Kenneth Branagh, Terence Stamp, Eddie fuckin' Izzard, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy- some of the finest British actors around. Throw in two excellent Germans (Thomas Kretschmann and Christian Berkel, who completely rocks in Downfall and has the "high explosives" line in this film) and I'm completely stoked. And yeah, Cruise is distracting, but he can put together an amazing performance (ex: Collateral, Minority Report). Fuck the haters, I'm digging this movie.

You're an idiot and you're fired. Singer hasn't always been good with action sequences (see X-Men) but he got better with X-Men 2 and Superman Returns. Even if you don't like Superman Returns, it was an absolutely gorgeous film, and never before or since I have seen flying look so kinetic and real on the screen. Singer is a great director who makes good looking films. I can't believe you seriously said this looks like it was made for TV.

I could kind of see how you would tout X-men 2 as an example of Singer's ability to shoot action (still a bit too obvious with the wire-work, but anywho), but Superman Returns??? Maybe you are astounded by Superman lifting stuff in successive order, but I wouldn't call that action by any means. In fact, I would just call it Singer's ability to film people posing and not much else (a big problem in X-men).

In any case, I wasn't referring to Singer's (in)ability to film action, but the scope and scale of the film and how it is shot. Didn't mean to get your panties in a knot, but Singer seems to always confine his shots to sets the size of a few classrooms. Now, I admit, I did see a scene or two in the trailer that showed an actual honest-to-God wide angle lense, but mostly the film looks as clostrophobic and small as every other Singer film. And please, don't give me the nonsense that Superman was huge or on a grand scale; all I saw were PJ shots (ie, close-ups of actors and real stuff and wide shots for cg).

Oh, and as for kinetic flying...
by moondoggy2u
Oct 31st, 2008
08:59:23 PM
I'm sorry, but you don't really mean the flying that was on display in full-on cartoon mode at the close-out of the film, do you? Look, the only time you ever saw any flying was when he flew by the camera at a hundred miles an hour--not much time for grace, detail, or, of course, convincing CGI. The only time we got up close was when he flew with Lois, at night, while the camera was football fields away. Mostly, I just saw dust motes flying through the city! And, again, don't even get me started on that awful, awful closing scene with the most horribly rendered CGI since the Scorpion King graced us with his presence.

The problem with Cruise's accent
by Monkey Butler
Nov 1st, 2008

is that everyone knows Cruise. So now, it's Cruise Fights The Nazis. Just like War of the Worlds was Cruise Fights The Aliens. Cruise is good at projecting himself onto a big screen, but absolutely none of his Blockbuster Performances!!! demonstrate that he's a good actor rather than someone who should be running an Tony Robbins knockoff seminar. So yeah, his American accent is a bit of a problem, not necessarily because it creates a problem for the internal consistency of the story, but because it creates a problem for the audience distancing the character (and real person) from Cruise Fighting Nazis!!! which, yeah, I'm really sure, was not the intention of the film.

ArcadianDS Watch desert fox.

It is interesting that the holocaust is an undercurrent of this movie ‘we must stop this ect’, and yet scientologist deny it. and singer is gay, and scientology is anti gay.

Accents: cause there is only one german accent right? Cause a dude in texas sounds just like a dude in boston.

plasticman2000: I don’t really care about the accent argument but people in early Norman England would not have what we would call a proper English accent. In fact depending on which legend you subscribe to the authority figures would all speak French, and the lower class people would speak something similar to german, or at it’s most similar to us would speak like the characters in Canterbury tales. Any way the language was way less homogeneus (as usual the bible was one of the things that brought the dialects together) and totally different to how it is today. Hmm. I can bang on about this. My missus is a speech therapist and tells me that the English accent changed a little after the settlement of America. It was called the great vowel shift. Consequently in many ways the American accent is more similar to olde worlde English than that of say London because they did not change as much. in many ways it is less the case that americans have changed than it is that the english changed, and the american settlement predates that change (although there is obvious influence from other languages)

I can't believe I'm weighing in on this but... I can't remember any of the British or American actors in Valkyrie attempting a foreign accent in any other movie they were in. With the exception of Wilkinson and Branagh, with his GOD AWFUL Woody Allen impersonation. Someone will prove me wrong I'm sure. It would have been ridiculous for Cruise to attempt one, because it would have distracted the audience, in the same way DiCaprio's accent did in Blood Diamond. Tom Cruise can be a great actor, in the right role. Born on the Fourth of July, Interview with the Vampire, Magnolia. Otherwise he's a strong screen presence. The same as Will Smith, who was great in Ali (which like Magnolia for Cruise, used the conventions of what we already know/think about the actor to its benefit). To the people who will boycott this film because they won't give money to scientology, you are deluding yourselves.

He's a crackpot head of a religion which preys and manipulates vulnerable people into giving up huge sums of money to be told they're decended from clams after we exploded out of volcanoes, Yadda yadda. It looks like an awesome film, I love the supporting cast and director and I think McQuarrie is hugely underrated as a one-off talent, but I will not put money into Cruise's pocket, until he pops his clogs. Maybe I'm cheating myself but fuck it the guy needs to be told. Would you support fascism?

Your response to my post: "Just say you cant stand anyone that doesnt have the same belief system as you." I never said that I hate Tom Cruise or any Scientologist; rather, I wrote that I wouldn't spend my money on this project, knowing that at least some of my money would go to sponsor, albeit tangentially, a stupid "religion." Learn to read before you call someone out, moron.

Your response to my post: "By watching movies and TV shows, you are supporting Scientology. For instance, if you watch My Name is Earl, the two male leads are both Scientologists. It is pretty hard to boycott, not to mention silly." Well, I don't watch "My Name is Earl," so I'm not supporting Scientology there. That's not so hard. Watching movies and tv shows does not in itself support Scientology; however, knowingly watching something that results in putting money in Scientology's pocket, even tangentialy and thereby suporting it, is something I avoid. If you think that's silly, then you don't know enough about the cult of Scientology and your opinion is less than worthless.

The problem I have with the trailer is theres not enough Hitler. He's presented as this being who is barely around, rather than the person at the center of the Nazi cult. What this movie needs is Bruno Ganz from Downfall. Bruno should forever make himself available to play ONLY movies with Hitler in it.

By the way, if you ever rent Downfall, watch the interviews at the end. I can't tell you how bizarre it is to see Bruno Ganz, dressed as Hitler but who is obviously a very flamboyant actor, talk about playing Hitler, with the full mustache and everything. He's so good as Hitler it's like watching Hitler playing an actor talking about playing Hitler. He is that fucking good.

When I was in college I was in a laundremat at at 2am and this freak approachs me and keeps telling me how I have to take my free personality test, read dianetics and have my life completely transformed. All I could think was....I don't want to end up harassing people in landremats at 2am, so I will skip the "free" personality test. Story two, the scientology center in Tustin California has been bombed repeatedly by people who were former members. Like many cults basically scientology feeds on week minded neurotic fools who tend to have grand delusions of their own importance. With the leveling up and payment plans it is like world of warcraft where the more you pay the higher your level.

You need to read up on your scientology. They're not just a religion, they're entire methodology aims to drain you of your financial resources, independence, family, friends, and sometimes even kill you.
http://www.scientology-kills.o rg
Say what you want about any other religion... I even take issue with those super-church christian churches that want you to commit a ton of money and time to the church. As misguided and selfish as I think they are, Scientology is just in another whole universe worse. Just read on Wikipedia about Theatans and find the so called sacred documents online. Those TV scripts.. erm.. I mean sacred documents are scary as hell in that people believe it.
Celebrity scientologists have no idea what they are supporting and it's really sad that they do this.

Last saturday morning on my usual train journey, a man started talking to me about the weather. Typical banter here in Ireland. But before long he had swayed the conversation to religion. Turns out he was a born again christian. He felt the need to save me. I am an atheist and fairly well read so I had heard his arguments all before in one shape or form. What got me was how agreesive he got as the conversation went on. He basically told me that before long I was going to murder and rape people if I didn't change. I can see how for someone ignorant on the topic of religion this would have been a very frightening experience. Me, I gave him no creedence because he was a crackpot. I actually felt sorry for him. He thinks the universe is 10,000 years old. Anway my point is ALL religions can be threatening.

Aside form Cruise's p.r. blunders (a real douchebag), the film has suffered from drastic post-production compromises (e.g. Cruise's accent was gauged as "atrocious"; an early preview was disappointing, audiences branded it as "boring", "confusing", et al). I'll definitely pass on this one.

My Scientology Experience

To mock the belief system inherent in Scientology is hypocritical for the most part and simply rude on the other part; there are many believers who don't hurt anyone and just follow their particular (holy) book. Now the actions of their higher-ups, their false promises laced with escalating financial demands, and their wanton and dangerous disregard for medicine and science... those are all reasons to attack. My own experience was going to their drug treatment program Narconon. We talked to ash trays, did insanely repetitious exercises, and everyone was afraid to get sick, because that didn't mean you caught a bug, it meant some negative force was suppressing you. It was pure insanity, and we were indeed weak and vulnerable, however no one I knew was caught in their web. No one continued with Scientological studies, but I was able to see how their teachings all served to paint you as a potentially perfect being if you followed what they said. It would take a very gullible and weak person to fall into their trap...but if it helped them and no one got hurt, fine... BUT I saw people's friends and family there being branded as suppressive people. I saw how Scientology had the potential to break up families, and that turned me off to them intensely.

Big Willy is close, but he ain't there yet. I don't go see every Will Smith movie.

I meant the movies he was the lead, the star! But I would say most of his supporting roles went over 100 mill (including Tropic Thunder, Magnolia, etc.)

As for his Scientology faith. I wish people would just get over it. If he was Jewish, would people be mentioning it?

Personally, I don't believe in any kind of organized religion. But I have to say. . . I can't remember Scientology starting wars, genocide, terrorism and political corruption throughout the centuries.

Not to flood the talkback with another South Park quote, but on why scientology is picked on over other pretendo religions- "Is it any more retarded than believing Jesus died for our sins or that Buddha sat under a tree for 10 years?...Yes, it's way, way more retarded." Regarding Valkyrie, the movie looks cool as hell regardless, or maybe partially because of, the craziness of the lead actor. I just wish that Katie Holmes could be had by a man who has the sexual orientation to enjoy her hotness. What a waste.

...Than most other kooky beliefs, and South Park actually gave a free pass to another religion that's about in the same league, Mormonism (which has a history of racism, sexism, homophobia, formalized child abuse, and even managed to massacre some of its own followers in an ambush...top THAT Scientology!).

This is all about low-hanging fruit and the nervous little skeptics who pluck it, unable to muster the balls of a Dawkins, a Maher or a Harris, who actually take on the "Big Three" (Christianity, Judaism and Islam) with similar zest.

I say, be all-inclusive with your atheism, or run the risk of looking like a small-minded bigot singling out Tom Cruise for his wacked-out beliefs, but giving a day-pass to Sarah Palin for hers. Where's your backbone?

Is it just me, or does a narrator saying the title just as you see the title just take any trailer and make it seem cheesy as all hell? I hate that. The entire thing was cut together really well and well-done, and then "Valkyrie". I hate that so much. It's like "in case you can't read, here's the name of the movie". I dunno. Maybe it's me.

I think what that particular episode of south park was trying to get at was, while other religions might be retarded, Scientology is based on the half-assed writings of somebody who living people knew and describe as a fucking charlatan and pederast. That is what renders scientology more retarded.

People still routinely get conned out of their money by pyramid schemes (shit, the stock market is one gigantic one). Scientology just cloaks it in carefully constructed mysticism and pseudoscience and shoots for a wealthier clientele. Done right (and it is), that could actually work on somebody educated but naive...

But to believe something just because it's "old"? Because everybody you know has a copy of your book and buys into it, even though it's inconsistent and unverifiable? And knowing full well it comes from a time when they thought that the Earth was flat and was at the center of the universe?

Now, THAT'S retarded. Leave Tom Cruise's ditzy beliefs alone...you're surrounded by gullibility and manipulation.

Sorry, guys, but this film just doesn't do anything for me. It's ludicrous and assinine for soldiers to group together to kill Hitler but the film is heading for huge disappointment because we all know Hitler DIDN'T get killed by Cruise German IMF team. So... Who fucking cares? I would appreciate these actors would at least carry an accent to give an illusion they're german and the movie translator gives us some sort of authenticity. Well this is usual Singer filmmaking: change the rules as see feet. From making Cyclops into a dick to Superman having a bastard child. Sigh. Enjoy this piece of shit all you wish, Boys, because I'm going into the next theater room enjoying David Fincher's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Buttons.
