What a huge bummer. This is the best family comedy on network TV, animated or not. (I said Network, cause I geekspasm all over Venture Bros.). It's sad we have to wade through yet another non sequitor Macfarlane fest - and I'm actually a big fan of Family Guy, but Cleveland - really? Decent supporting Character at best. I pour my 40 of Alamo to the curb for the Hill gang.

Fox just has so many dynamite shows, there's just no place for a consistantly good show which has to be vastly cheaper than starting up new shows.

Nope. They need room for the plethora of quickly cancelled shows and even quicker cancelled reality shows with ambitious/ horriffying goals. Remember Who's Your Daddy? or Married By America? Me neither. Remember when Dale did something stupid and Bobby just wasn't right? Fuck yeah.

This show, in its 13 years has been CONSISTENTLY funny, and has never seem tired. I love this show to death, and it pains me that so many people so easily dismiss it. Second longest running cartoon is a prety respectable honour too. Does that mean that the show will not have a proper finale, or did they more or less assume this season would be it?
Fuck you Fox...

seriously..... especially more so if you don't give it a proper series finale, since its the one primetime animated comedy with actual character and story developments. Of course, I'm guess that's probably why Fox and your 'joe sixpack' McFarland viewers short changed it.

I always found King Of The Hill boring. I love Family Guy, but I dont even watch American Dad. And Cleveland is a weak character to begin with, so I cant see how a whole show of him is gonna be good. I absolutely LOVE King of the Hill, and I think if you average KOTH quality per episode over time and compare it even to an average Simpsons quality per episode over time, KOTH is the better show. But this was really a long time coming, and I don't think Fox is really "cancelling" the show. This is the third year that was supposed to be the last season. Judge was planning to end it last year, but Fox convinced him to come back to the show one more year. It's long been in the plans for the show to end, and I didn't see it going another year anyway. Personally, I've enjoyed it the entire time it's been on, and will continue to do so. But I don't think that there should be any resentment toward Fox for this. If anything, I think they kept the show around for two more years.

I'll admit Family Guy was funny for about a year, but they run the same jokes today they ran back in 2002...American Dad is a complete piece of shit, without even an ounce of redemption possible for it. The fact that they gave this guy a HUGE contract to keep writing and producing horrible comedy makes me sick.

King of the Hill is absolutely terrible - everything about it is disappointing, from the "jokes" to the gentle "humor" to the shockingly bad characters to the shithouse setting. Everything about this show is a joke - a joke that just isn't funny.

The other thing that's really interesting about King of the Hill (or Smell My Finger as I call it) is that it doesn't travel well at all - trust me, you must have to be Texan or retarded Trig-level dumb to find anything about this rag-tag bunch of interconnect bollocks to be anything other than a desperate attempt by Fox to make a show that people with an IQ lower than their shoe size can relate to.

It's worse than According To Jim - a show that gave me stomach cancer just by seeing the previews.

I readily admit that I did love the show when it started. All that redneck humor was a nice change of pace from what the Simpsons were or weren't offering at the time.

Sadly, as time dragged on so did the premise. Dale's amusing paranoia got boring. Hank's propane devotion turned into a fetish. Bobby went from fat little obnoxious shit to fat obnoxious little shit. Well, at least that stayed the same.

There's only so many times you can play the same jokes before they get retarded. Kinda like those "Damn you, Michael Bay!!!" or "George Lucas raped my childhood." chants here on AICN. Funny as hell at first, but like sex with an Amish prostitute after a while.

Plus, with the show being constantly preempted or shuffled in and out of the "time slot of death" I long ceased to care.

IMO, the only things funny things ever created by judge were Office Space & Beavis & Butthead. Everything else, including the mildly entertaining Idiocracy, is a blip.

Considering the show can't be cheap to produce, and considering how Fox has thrown NO money into advertising the show in the last six or seven years, it's unusual that they've kept it around for so long. I mean, I can understand something like Married: With Children running nine seasons, because that was a cheap-ass show, but KOTH? Anyways, it was a good show (never really was a dedicated watcher, but it's one of those perfect shows to catch piecemeal in syndication), and better this running 13 seasons than fucking Family Guy (the idea of THREE Seth McFarlane shows on the air simultaneously makes my blood run cold). And yes, Luanne was SMOKING hot with that pervesely sexy Brittany Murphy voice.

I cannot be confused for a Beavis and Butthead fan under any circumstance. When this show first came out I avoided it like the plague. Texan/Redneck Humor I thought... but when you actually give this show a chance (especially season 3) its one of the most consistently funny shows on tv. Admittedly the last few seasons have sort of fallen off but even saying that we're talking about falling only slightly. You don't have to believe in what they do to enjoy it... in fact the show is extraordinarily funny when you realize how horrible the characters are at parenting, acclimating to change, and understanding the way the world really works. They've had major stars as cameos which they don't even advertise... like Johnny Depp as the world's most annoying yoga instructor and Tom Petty joined the cast after putting in a simple cameo. I'm not sad to see it go because I'd hate for it to continue with without Judge involved, I just hope that they give it a proper series finale. Seriously though check it out in syndication or on FX and take it from the untrustworthy protagonist view and you may find that you will enjoy it.

This show is begging...
by JethroBodine

This show is begging to be translated into a non-animated format. It really didn't need to be animated to begin with, (other than for longevity sake because if it's animated Bobby never really gets older). I think if FOX were smart they would realize that and take this great property and simply transition it to the real world. And not in some stupid movie format either, keep it on the small screen, just non-animated. They'd get a lot of milage out of the uniqueness, hype, and curiosity factor, and that way they could keep it going for awhile longer. It always seemed to me like it was a bit similar to Malcolm in the Middle anyway. And it's not unusual to have cast members of television shows recast anyway, remember Bewitched, except this time they could just recast the whole cast. And non-animated television shows have found their way into becoming animated for years, remember The Fonz and the Happy Days Gang, or The Little Rascals. Fox just needs to do a reversal of that. It's just a thought. But I'd personally like to see it. I could be off in my own little world here, but at least it's an idea of a way to breathe new life into a dying/dead but great property.
That sucks, but there's always syndication!

The earlier Simpsons series focusing on the dysfunction of family life were fantastically funny and well written. KOTH has pretty much maintained that focus, and as such is easily relatable no matter where you come from.

Because, as a Canadian living in Britain, I also never managed to get the appeal of this show's sense of humour. And I say that as someone who loved Judge's other stuff, e.g. Beavis & Butthead. Still, it lasted 13 seasons and those who liked it seem to have *really* liked it, so ... kudos.

they have to do at least one episode of hank talking about the current oil and energy crisis and how the U.S. needs to turn to alternative energy sources like propane to become energy independent. Also Texas leads the nation in windmill energy. I'm sure Judge can find a way to make it funny like say a guest appearance from T. Bone Pickens.

OK...they are (once again) canning the best animated show and ramping up production on another Seth show? No offense...but one of those is plenty (what the fuck is up with all the oversized chins? And why does every show have to have the same voice cast...if not the same characters slightly disguised?) I reckon that's why I don't run Hollywood. KotH rules, and I will be sad to see it go. But anything with Mike Judge is comedy gold and I look forward to his new effort. DANG IT, BOBBY!

To quote Mr. Cartman. "I am nothing like Family Guy! When I make jokes they are inherent to a story! Deep situational and emotional jokes based on what is relevant and has a point, not just one random interchangeable joke after another!"

I thought it was a great compliment in 'cartoon wars' when the slapfight led into the KOTH offices, and they showed guys WRITING! KOTH is not everyone's cup of tea, but the humor and jokes organically flow from the true nature of the characters. Occasionally it's bizarre, but brilliantly. Buckley's trampoline, anyone?

With Family Guy, I'm reminded of Oscar Wilde's saying "If you can't be witty, be blasphemous. In a pinch it can pass for wit."

I was never a big fan of KOTH but for the people defending American Dad... Really? That show sucks. Truth be told I think it's really hard for anyone to strike gold with one of their creations twice. Just because it's on the air doesn't mean it's good. I"ll admit that McFarland struck gold with Family Guy and it is half way decent, and now he's using that success to launch more shows that are... Inferior. I'm not judging him for cashing in, hell I'd do the same thing, but to actually think that American Dad is a funny and interesting show? I'm sorry I just don't get it. But I'm sure some rage filled McFarland fanboy will enlighten me on how American Dad has changed the animation landscape on network television.

Only 13 years. Maybe this is a sign that they'll eventually get around to canceling the Simpsons (and 24) one of these days.

On average though, KOTH was Fox's best animated sitcom. A lot of people here are posting about how stupid they thought the was show was, but the writing was far more intelligent than the Simpsons or Family Guy. And it was consistently good, which is an amazing feat when you consider how long the show has been on. The only people who didn't like this are NY and LA elitists who can't put aside their hatred of middle America long enough to appreciate the clever jokes. And it's not that I don't hate some of the characters. Peggy is one of the most vile characters on TV, but Hank was certainly respectable, even if you disagreed with his beliefs and lifestyle.

I was once a NY liberal myself and now that I live in Colorado and still visit NY from time to time, I appalled by how much hatred NYers have for people who are different. When I grew up in NY, I use to think on some level, that we were somehow more enlightened than the narrow minded hillby bumblefucks out there, but after spending more time with redneck types, I realize that NY is much more close-minded and backwards. For instance, it's easy to find people of any political persuasion in Colorado and they're all use to having friends on the other side so they're more open to a fair debate. In NY, they are almost all, with very few exceptions, devout liberals who can't stop yapping about how much they hate Sarah Palin or whatever. Not that I'm a fan of hers either, but it's like they have no sense of perspective and it'll be someone else, once she's gone. So many of their friends reinforce their beliefs to the point where anyone who thinks otherwise is considered plain stupid. Even liberals out here find NYers insufferably arrogant. Ironically, this is why lightweights like Palin manage to do well in the red states, people think that if the NY and LA types hate her so much, that she must be good. I've never seen that much conservative hatred for Obama (some, but not nearly as intense). Anyway, KOTH is a great show that open-minded people tend to appreciate, was my point.

King of the Hill was never meant to be a jaw-aching comedy. It was just a silly character piece that hoped to entertain you. It was the "Friends" of animated television, and one of the last to actually attempt to follow some sort of storyline. McFarlane's stuff seems to be funny only in that 'what the hell was THAT random thing?' kind of way. Its a mashup of disconnected set pieces whose comedy relies on the fact that you find jarring right turns in the story to be funny.

This cancellation reminds me of that time I was an astronaut, in which nothing having anything to do with cancellations of any kind or in any possible way, took place.

See, thats really funny right there what I did. oh yeah, its funny enough to support THREE television shows.

Anyone who dismisses it as "redneck humor" hasn't really watched it or just doesn't get it. If you really watched it, you'd notice that many episodes have Hank, despite being so "traditional" about everything, coming to accept or at the very least tolerate something he hadn't before. It made fun of the usual Texas redneck stereotypes, but also kind of showed that they really just are stereotypes, and that Hank is a good guy, even if he's a little old fashioned. Plus, Dale Gribble is one of the best television characters around. But much of the humor is subtle and not just random slapstick with barely any continuity or faithfulness to characters, like the McFarlane shows. Oh, and I liked Family Guy, but since it's resurrection it's gone downhill thanks to making the entire show about the "offensive" and "outrageous" humor that was once only a part of it. American Dad, while not great, is sometimes better than much of the new Family Guy.

I for one am amazed King of the Hill stayed on this long, considering how little Fox promoted it these last few years. Great show, and destined to be one of the most underrated shows on TV, ever.

King of the Hill was an intelligent comedy. McFarlane's shows are lowbrow "Ow! My Balls!" level shit. Way to cater to the dumbest people in your audience, Fox!

I guess they want programming that appeals to the same people who watch FOX News.

I'll gladly tune in to ABC to watch Mike Judge show Seth McFarlane how animation is supposed to be done. If there's any luck, his new show will run opposite "Family Guy" and wipe the floor with it.

So Sunday has officially become the Seth McFarlane Crapstravaganza. I bet they're doing this because it's cheaper to feed manatees than it is to pay real writers.

Family Guy never tried

to make its characters as likable as Judge does. Watch season one of Family Guy and then watch the new episode on Sunday. It's almost painful to see how much Macfarlane missed the mark in terms of fitting even the most basic cliches and going just a little further to create likable characters that keep your audience attached. So he resorts to the manatee jokes. I really find them funny. I don't watch Family Guy expecting a plot (ranging from decent to great) like I do with KotH or The Simpsons. It's just hit or miss bullshit like Robot Chicken now. That said, it's fine that KotH is being canceled as long as Judge is still working. Its had a good run. I'm surprised he stayed at Fox so long anyway after the Idiocracy debacle. As for Beavis and Butthead being all poop jokes as someone said...there's actually some much more subtle humor in there if you go back and watch. The joke isn't always in how they're spreading genital warts with a spatula, or their immature remarks. They're constantly victimized, ridiculed themselves, and most of the time they're taken advantage of to a ridiculous degree and the situational irony is pretty hilarious even though it's not explicit. I'm not saying there's a deep social commentary to the show, but Judge's more subtle sense of humor is there in between the crass humor that's attracted the most attention.

But as some others have noted, it seems like the show has been coasting the past few seasons. Personally Lucky really kind of made me sour on the show (and I like Tom Petty); just really didn't like the character at all. Then again, I didn't like Didi Hill from the early seasons either, but the show usually made up for it in other ways. This feels like its probably time for the show to wrap up. Also, whatever happened to Connie? Was she written out? Last episode I watched (from this season, the one with the McMansion), Kahn Souphanousinphone was there, but don't think Minh or Connie were.

Family Guy is a funny show, so is South Park, so is King of the Hill. There is no rule mandating that if you like one you got to hate the others. I'm bummed out that KOTH is dead, being born and raised rural Texan: I love that show. Also, I disagree with Seth's politics and, more importantly, wasn't born in 70's, but I still find Family Guy hilarious. And South Park. American Dad and the Lisa-wallowing Simpsons... a different story.

I gotta disagree with you about Lucky. I actually know guys like Lucky and Mud Dobber, and I can't get enough speeches about the most prized of the "trophy woods," aka marled walnut (truck stops always have white trash eye candy made out of that stuff). I just wish they had made Octavio a regular.

Hank becomes manager of Strickland Propane?
Luanne gives birth?
Lady Bird dies and they get a new puppy?
Peggy finally gets pregnant like she wanted?

There are all kinds of things they could do.
But apparently (I hear) its actually going to end with Hank flushing Cotton down the toilet.
Fox has treated the show horribly

NO promotions at all- except for "after an all new King of the Hill" between long expositions about Family Guy and the Simpsons. That said, it seems as though Mike Judge was closing up shop on King of the Hill anyway.
King of the Hill is a sitcom. Well its more than that..

but the point is, it's not fair to call it a cartoon. It's really the only animated series I have ever seen that has created a completely realistic and logical universe for itself. In other words, these are normal families that have somewhat normal lives. Contrast that with the Simpsons, which sees Springfield suddenly have weird geological features that never existed before.

FAMILY GUY gave props to Judge...

The "Surfin' Bird" episode re-enacted one of the funniest Judge moments ever, the "Fax Machine Beatdown" from OFFICE SPACE, substituting the loathsome 45 for the hated office equipment.

KOTH had a good run of it, what the hell.

Why are people bummed, it had a good run.

Its good to call quits to a show before it really starts to stink. Like the Simpsons, which should have been put to bed about 8 years ago. For everything, there is a season.

...is because with KOTH gone, now the only cartoon shows on Fox will be the LUDICROUSLY past-it's-prime Simpsons and THREE Seth McFarlane shows.

...but can't stand The Family Guy. I've tried to watch, repeatedly, but just can't stomach it. It might get a smirk from me, but that's it. I don't understand the love for Bevis and Butthead I'm seeing here, either. Loved me some King of the Hill, though. It had a good run, but will still be missed by many.

KOTH was not a cuddly little version of Mayberry. Lots of character growth. People that think it's the same thing over and over again haven't watched it.

Remember when Dale found out his dad was gay? And that he had been working with a traveling gay rodeo as a clown that would catch a goat and put panties on it?

Remember when Hank accidently caught his Mom screwing her boyfriend on the kitchen table? Hank promptly went blind.

When Hank's weird friend Bill had a breakdown and started wearing his long gone ex-wife's dresses and hats?

And their kid's truly bizarre obsession with being a prop comic?
Don't let the gentle feel of the show hide the weird, weird stuff they did.
Good riddance

This show ran out of life years ago, then it just got into silly patterns and increasingly over-the-top situations. Hank Hill continuously became more and more 1-dimensional a character, more of a cliche, which held back Bobby and Dale and Bill. Peg and Luanne pretty much mired on their own, but Dale and Bill were tied neatly to Hank's growth and lack thereof, it's like after about 4 years the show just emptied the idea well and went on autopilot. Bobby has kind of grown as a character, but they never do much of anything, and ultimately he falls back to being the foil to his semi-intolerant dad. Then once in a while they'll whip out the middle-America "common sense" harping on urbanites, bureaucracy, any cliche where "good local folk" are superior to everybody else - there's nothing learned, nothing funny, it's just spouting like every other show that takes itself more seriously than it deserves (though I will grant Judge the conceit that he represents the other side of that coin from most TV). Ultimately, KOTH stopped being funny and stopped saying anything, leaving us with endlessly lazy situations and character writing, and it's long past time for it to ride into the sunset. The Simpsons has a slanted view on the world, it's a silly, sardonic parody so it gets away with staying around despite losing more and more of itself every new episode, but KOTH doesn't deliver laughs and doesn't grow itself. Where are these characters going if they're not going to mine the comedy in the situations? Nobody writing KOTH seems to care, they just come up with a new gag situation that's outlandish, then use pseudo-folksy reactions to fill 22 minutes.

YES! I have made a snarky, nasty, yet somehow insightful talkback on AICN, I am now a fully-fledged cliche!

...or work outside the US: you are wrong.

I'm English and love the show, and the only time I've been to Texas was when I passed through it on a Greyhound coach. Still, it's easy to get a feel for the demographic the show portrays (with a nice mixture of affection and satirical deconstruction), and it's easy for comedy fans to appreciate the wry, often warm character-based writing (and lack of any reliance on surrealism. It may not have been consistently excellent throughout its entire run, but it's given my friend (a comedy writer) and me many hours of hilarity and enjoyment. Sad to see it go, though I suppose it was time.

Why do we need three versions of Family Guy. One is good enough. American Dad is just Family Guy with different names.

wow, this is pretty lame. I guess it won't be the end of the world if King of the Hill is canceled if all of the episodes are going to be promoting other Fox owned properties...
Thank god

I hated this show from day 1, and I was over joyed to know it will finally be over, waaay long over due. I could never say enough bad things about this show, and I hope fox doesn't throw it into the daily rerun timeslot. I just wish they would burn all of the tapes, so I never have to see glimpse of this terrible, terrible, just not funny show.

It may be hit and miss but Family Guy is almost always a miss. And how did American Dad last this long? That show seems pretty terrible.

King of the Hill SUCKED!!!!!!!!!!! It was never funny and the characters were totally annoying (and this is coming from a person who lived in both Dallas and Austin for a while). It will not be missed.
