Dalton was a great Bond. Daylights is fantastic, more like Craig's films than Moore's or Brosnan's. And Merrick - quit the shakeycam bitching. Bourne Ultimatum was perfect. The action was amazing!

Here's the thing: Dalton was great; his movies sucked warty cock. We may all remember that Dalton's films were an attempt, again, to reinvent Bond. Something that has only with Craig been met with success. Parts of Brosnan's reinvention were ok, but still a shock. And Die Another Day? Sigh, at least the keys invisible car has been misplaced. Dalton's films had a stranger introduction, and I remember in, if I'm correct, Living Daylights, the intro involved a model handling a camera. The camera was an Olympus. Perhaps the most blatant product placement since Pierce Brosnan shaved his beard off with a Norelco. anyhoo, i agree Craig is the best bond ever. I think that there's still work to do on the franchise (a Bond movie less than 2 hours? UNHEARD OF! 1:46? It's nuts! Even Tomorrow Never Dies was 1:59). Anyhow, I'm looking forward to lots more with Craig.

Have you looked at a list of movies that have gotten to No.1 in the US Box Office this year? The majority of people have mild down's syndrome. But I'd say the majority of GEEKS would agree with Kirk that Nolan does have a bit of a problem shooting action, even if they loved the movie.

I said 'critical' as well as commercial success. Please, find me one bad review for The Dark Knight (apart from complaints that it's too violent - should never have been a 12A). Regarding his action direction - it's improved beyond the ability of your usual Bond director - problem with the Bat finale wasn't the direction but the over-complex concept of the 'cellphone-goggles' trying to potray multi-levels at a fast pace. BTW, cheers thedeadnextdoor ;)

what i never understood about the finale was this. If the Joker was such an evil bad ass, and if both ships were truly wired, why wouldn't he have just blown them up on his own? I mean on a timer. He's that smart. The script wasn't. Dark Knight was a major let down. I was pissed when it ended. That being said, whether Nolan's failed action sequences were a result of him or his overly complex script remains to be seen, but I wouldn't let him have a chance at the franchise. I would just keep letting Martin Campbell have a crack at it until he finally kicks off. Cause he's consistent and excellent (except in The Legend of Zorro's craptacular CG ending).

well maybe I'm a bit harsh but watch dalton in anything.... The guy has no range. John glen was a hack and despite" licence" actually having a plot, it still sucked. Brosnan was a little better as he has low key charm but little charisma. Looking forward to QoS as I thought casino a bit overatted, especially the final act, but craig is terrific as bond. If QoS is action packed fine by me.
captain_kirk - the Joker's motivation
by DC Films
Oct 30th, 2008
01:59:43 PM
The Joker certainly could've blown up the ships himself. We can infer that by not blowing up the ships, but instead giving them such a Riddler-esque choice, he wanted to prove a point - the question at the film's heart: when it comes down to it are we all just animals out for ourselves (Mad Dogs, as the Joker termed it). Hence he was gutted when the ships didn't blow - proved instead that we're not all mad dogs at heart.

What if the mystery guy that Bond hauls in at the beginning of the movie (after shooting him at the end of the last movie) becomes...wait for it...Q? I was watching the trailer again this morning and it suddenly dawned on me, "This guy is WAY too mysterious...and he seems to be channeling Desmond Llewelyn pretty well...wait a second...if he's got all these ties to stuff that's going on 'everywhere', maybe he has access to weapons technology, too..." I agree with many, TDK even though a good film (not great, but good) had all kinds of flaws (counting the shitty fight scenes). The only good action scene was the street scene with the batPod. Hopefully when the fanboys take a moment and slip there lips from the ass crack of all things TDK, they'll watch it on DVD and finally see that it's not a perfect film and not the greatest superhero film either.

I keep getting mixed up with a Sidney Poitier / Tom Berenger movie from the 80's. Anyhoo, the problem with License to Drive was that Joe Don Baker must have been the only villain to ever not die in the end, but rather get carted off by the police. Yes, Blofeld was around for several films, but he was never arrested. That was weird. A statue fell on him and Bond busted him. Lame ending. Great Bond, lame ending.

I'll say this for the Bond producers, at least they're consistent with their inconsistency. Just about everything that fans praised about Casino Royale has been thrown out in Quantum of Solace. Bond is back to being invulnerable, and the script once again favors stunts over story. 007 Magazine has been unconditionally supporting and hyping this film all year long, yet they found it to be a crushing disappointment. http://www.007magazine.co.uk/b ond22/bond_22_review.htm

I know most reviews are saying it's nowhere near as good as "Casino Royale" (my candidate for the best non-Conery Bond, and besting even most of those), but I'm still excited. My only issue is the run time. Bond movies should be over 2 hours long. This series doesn't need more action packed into a smaller space, it just needs for the action scenes it does have to hit us with the impact of those in "Casino Royale." Everyone who has played the role has made a bad Bond film, except, oddly, Lazenby. "Her Majesty's Secret Service" might be at the top of everyone's list if Connery were in it. Connery made "Diamonds Are Forever." Moore made "A View to a Kill" (maybe the worst ever). Dalton made "License to Kill" (I actually like "The Living Daylights" quite a bit). Brosnan made "The World is Not Enough" and the second half of "Die Another Day." Craig is the first actor ever given the opportunity to play the character before he was truely James Bond. I can't wait for this one!

I think you have it a bit mixed up. Brad Whitaker (Joe Don Baker) was killed by Bond at the end of TLDL. Bond used his key chain with plastic explosive to kill him by blowing up the statue of Caesar.

However, General Georgi Koskov (Jeroen Krabbé) was another villain that was arrested by the KGB shortly after Whitaker's death.

I just popped in the DVD to check... Regardless of the details, I see your point.

I'd have to agree with you... the series went haywire during DAF - parts of that bond film were jaw droppingly bad (Mr Kidd & Mr Wint... YIKES). A shame it was Connery's farewell to the Eon series.

Moore's tenure in the role was hit and miss with slightly more misses than hits.

Craig does a great job with the material. Funny how there was so much blowback from fans about his casting before CR was released. In hindsight, he's up there with Connery.

Bond vs. Rambo

I'm not sure Bond should ever be compared to Rambo. It wasn't that long ago that the idea of James Bond wielding a machine gun was ridiculed, and considered too over the top. In fact, that was pretty much a recurring theme in the wake of Casino Royale. The reboot was supposed to be a departure from the Bond films that were little more than a loose collection of stunt sequences. Instead, that's exactly what the producers have returned to after just one film. I'm beginning to think they should take a longer hiatus in between films, because that seems to be the only way they can get off of autopilot. But anyway, to answer your question, I'd have to go with Rambo. (For that matter, I'd probably have to pick Stallone over Craig as well. Even at 60.)

Stallone pulled out all the stops with Rambo on a 50 million budget. It makes you wonder where he is going with the 5th (which he recently just said he is taking his time with cause he wants a worthy story). JAMES BOND seems to have gone back to the over-the-top-ness of past but in more of a BAD ASS way. I say Craig is the best BOND ever besides Connery. His BOND films puts PIERCE BROSNON's to shame sans GOLDENEYE.

Kirby seriously. The Living Daylights and License to Kill were hardly Bond's best moments. Joe Don Baker, new-slut Moneypenny, Bond in khakis going for a stroll and a sleigh ride with Olivia D'abo, and the weight of an unclear vision for "reinvention" almost destroyed the franchise. I will say that The Living Daylights had some of my favorite and awesomest Bond moments, but fell apart in the finale. I'm sorry, but if a statue is going to fall on a bad guy, it (a) must be a f*cking huge statue; and (b) must crush the mother f*cker to death. As for License to Kill, there was no reason why Felix Leiter survived, delimbed and all, and the topless psychic bit it. Very good opening sequence. Very shitty rest of the movie. And, as if I ever needed more proof, let me remind you of how bad License to Kill was with two magic words: Wayne Newton.

Sean, George and Timoty were the true Bonds! Moore was fun, but he became to cartoonish. Pierce was good, but he only did one decent Bond movie(Goldeneye). I'm not sure if I want to see Bond in a 100% action film. Whats wrong with going back to doing realy spy-missions? So the gun barrel isn't shown in the beginning? That sucks big time! It's a trademark, everytime I see that gunbarrel I know it's bond... but now they have to change it every goddamn movie.

Timothy Dalton a bad actor??

WTF? Timothy Dalton was maybe the most skilled actor out of all the Bonds. Any of you shortbuses ragging on him ever seen "The lion in winter"? He could've been the best Bond save for the fact that his movies were unevenly written and directed. His performance and attitude however were top notch.

Yeah, when it came out it was exactly the return that Bond needed but the film hasn't exactly held up against repeated viewings for me. It has the slick look and feel of a great 90's action movie, and Brosnan is convincing in the role, but too much of the movie and story feel silly and overblown. I know a lot of fanboys love Xenia but she strains credibility, and though Alan Cummings is a great actor, his Boris character is incredibly grating. Perhaps Goldeneye is best remembered as a fun Nintendo 64 game. Then again, I prefer my Bond to be lean, mean, and gadget-less: see Dr. No and Casino Royale.

Goldeneye lost me with the whole chase a plane off a cliff on a motorbike and then just step in and fly away trick. The bit on the Dam was top though. And the N64 game is my alltime favourite. Is the new one any good anyone?

The reason a few people were upset with ArcadianDS's comment (and I still think he was joking) was that it suggested a complete disregard for Remembrance Day.

It's a bit like if, on the Independence Day TBs a few years ago, someone had said "Independance Day? What the fuck is that? Is it important?"

The first Felix Leiter was... Jack Lord (Dr. No, 1962), more famous as Steve McGarrett in 271 episodes of Hawaii Five-0. // Also, the villain should be interesting, as the only other thing I've seen him in (The Diving Bell & the Butterfly) had him completely immobile about 90% of the time.

It's funny you say that, I'd have to agree with you... I was so looking froward to Goldeneye because it was marketed as "the return to the book Bond". but when it came out it was more of the same... silly names... silly gadgets... overblown action scenes for the sake of overblown action scenes... and the FX miniature work was, well horrible (ie: the water running backwards during the radio telescope scene). The worst was that they set up the BMW by having Q explain the whole thing and then they never even crack it up. Joe Don Baker was like "Thx Jimbo for the car" and he drives away. It didn't help that HEAT came out around the same time which had on of the best shoot outs in cinema history.

The irony is that the Goldeneye video game was one of the best for its day. I missed countless university classes using multiplayer mode with my roommates. That sniper rifle killed.

I personally thought there was improvement with Tomorrow Never Dies... but I'm sure there are plenty who would disagree.

I honestly don't think I've seen Tomorrow Never Dies since it came out in the theater, but I do remember enjoying it more than Goldeneye. it had a great opening, and I was a big fan of Michelle Yeoh from her work with Jackie Chan in Police Story 3: Supercop. My problem never was with Brosnan, he was always a very capable Bond, it was just that he seemed to get saddled with the most underwhelming scripts and was yet somehow able to ride this surge of popularity to the point where everyone of my generation (i.e. people too young to have grown up with Roger Moore) recognize him as "the BEST Bond" when i would beg to differ...

Craig recently had some shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum; that's a sling he's wearing on his right arm. And the poppy lapels are worn in the days leading up to Remembrance Day (Nov 11) in the UK and Canada. Oh yeah, did I mention I really want to see this movie?
