But anyone who has read it will tell you that a film version would end up being protracted and feeling like a cop-out. The HBO series might have done it justice if it had stayed on track. At least we can all agree that it is good to have Mark Steven Johnson off the project and having a classy film maker like Sam Mendes on board. I wish him all the best in beating his head against a brick wall fighting the studios and censors over this movie.

...in HELL can this be faithful to the series. Whatever Mendez makes might be good but it won't be Preacher. It just isn't possible to cram all that happens in those books into a 2-3 hour movie. Subplots that will be impossible to mesh into one movie...just off the top of my head: Arseface, the Vatican and Herr, Saint of Killers, Custer's fucked up family, crazy orgy party, the Duke, Cassidy's entire backstory, "Fuck Communism" backstory, Sheriff Custer, Masada, the two FBI agents... How can they even look at that and think feature film? I suppose they could put it ALL in there and give no depth to any of it. Adapting this will be ten times harder than Watchmen and there being no squid will be the least of our fucking worries.

Preacher won't work as a movie, not and still be anywhere near an accurate adaptation anyhow. I mean people were all bitching about how "impossible" it is for Watchmen, a mere 12 part series, to be faithfully adapted into a single film, and while I actually have high hopes for that one, Preacher took 60 issues (plus specials) to tell it's complete story, most of which was actually required to get the full impact across, so to me I'm actually going to have to side with the decryers this time around and say that there is no way that this works as a single film. Not as still be Preacher as we even remotely know it anyhow. I just can not see this working as an adaptation, and that's because we even get anywhere near just how toned down it's likely to be...

"Preacher" was a tremendous read almost without any filler; seems unlikely that anything even reomotely approaching its richness-- which is one the things that makes "Preacher" so damn enjoyable-- can be set up in a feature length film. Clearly would be most effective as a cable series.

It should be Lance Henriksen, because let's face it, no way Eastwood would ever do it, and you just know Henriksen could nail the role. Just take a look at Dead Man if you need any proof. I still say that there is no way that this can work as a movie though. Sure, it could work as a series of movies, but that doesn't appear to be the plan here unfortunately. And sure, Sam Mendes may well create a great movie inspired by the material, but there's just no way to do anything approaching an accurate adaptation of Preacher as a single film. Still, it'll be interesting to see how this progresses regardless...

Mendes is a major, MAJOR talent -- AMERICAN BEAUTY's content may have dated a little, but it's visuals and performances haven't, ROAD TO PERDITION is elegant and has a great sense of period style and JARHEAD is mesmerisingly good -- and his involvement should excite anyone. To me, this has almost a Heath Ledger-as-the-Joker vibe, meaning I like it because I have absolutely NO idea what to expect. Nothing in this artist's career has clued us in to how he'll approach this, but everything he's done to date is quality, and both that and the possibility inherent in the unknown is thrilling. I had exactly the same feeling when Ledger took on the Joker, and look how amazing THAT performance was. (I'm talking artistically here, so leave the tasteless comments in your holster.) And why can't it be a series of flicks?

I'm hopeful but extremely skeptical- this would be one of the hardest things to to adapt tonally, however hard hard "The Watchmen" will be hard to match in terms of it's feel, this has a dark sense of humour that is pretty unique in comic books. That said, Mendes did a hell of a job with "Road to Peredition", but getting Arseface just right? god luck Sammy..

I mean i love the idea of a live action Preacher. But the only way i see it done justice is as a tv series as was planned. Of course i'm happy the project isn't dead in the water but how could they pull this of and stay true to the story. I mean even if they did a trilogy (That seems to be so fucking popular theese days) they wouldn't cover all the stories of the comic books. And how would they deal with all the explicit material and dark subject matters. I mean if they dont push the envelope on this one then why even bother. But then again if they do that, the MPAA is going to have a field day hacking and cutting away. The again they might just slap an NC-17 on the movie and that will not sit well with the big studio execs, since everything is about money these days. I'm surprised they ain't going for a PG-13 family oriented Preacher. Okay maybe that was a bit over the top from my side. But who knows. As much as i think Sam Mendes is a good and competent director he does not seem to be the type for something like Preacher (Frankly i don't know what director could?). I mean he is a pretty artsy kinda guy so what if he goes and decides to be a little to creative and changes around with the story. That shit has happened before. I would not be happy and i don't think i'm alone there. Well i've said my piece. Let's just hope for the best of it...

Have the origin story of the three main characters, with them being hanuted by the Saint (freed by the moronic Angels ala issue one) across Texas. You can hint at the Grail, but like a Batman film there's no need to have all the villians in one movie. I have high hopes this can work, as the series is very cinematic in nature (unlike Watchmen)

They need to just give up on it, I think. Some things are better left on the page and I just can't see any way for it to be faithful enough for fans and yet mainstream enough to make a profit. Scorsese got death threats for Last Temptation of Christ and Kevin Smith got them for Dogma, how do you think people are going to react to the film adapation of a comic book that depicts the last human descendant of Jesus Christ as a drooling inbred retard? I love Preacher as much as the next comic geek, but I'd rather not see a Preacher movie/tv show than see a toothless one. And mark my words, if this actually gets made it'll be watered down almost to the point of insignificance.

We can but hope. With Paul Bettany in the role, and bringing back Tilda Swinton occasionally for that scary-as-hell Gabriel she did so brilliantly. SEA OF SOULS had an episode with Paul McGann that had an almost-authentic-HELLBLAZER vibe, but... not quite. Good attempt, though. Not to get political (TOO LATE!), but if we had governments in the goold ol' USA AND the UK (my backyard), that understood the true importance of real democracy and free speech, and had the brass cojones to actually enforce the rules that allow free speech and true democracy, then we'd be coming down with great vengeance and furious anger on ANYONE who puts a death threat out on someone who has written, drawn or performed something that causes offence. Preacher would have been better as a tv show in all fairness...like The Sandman, its only toward the endo of the sereis that the ACTUAL plot line becomes apparent and your'e given a stisfactory conclusion...but you need all the stuff in between to let you actually emotionally attach to the characters...in the that respect it would be nearly impossible to pull off the storyline in one two hour flick. Unless they make up a story that just revolves around the characters, but then thats not really Preacher is it? I mean it would be tough to stray off the whole "getting God to answer for himself/saint of killers" etc storylines cos...well, thats what Preacher is fundamentally. I don't think that he is overrated because I don't think people treat him like Welle's reincarnated anymore like they did when American Beauty first released. for the Saint....and to those throwing in the whole Lord Of Te Rings arguement, you over look the fact that they set out to make three films with little doubt the film wold be successful...with something like Preacher you cant greenlight a series as A)its too offensive to people and B) a lotta people wont bother going to see it due to its relative obscurity outside the comic buying public. LOTR and Harry Potter were HUUUUGE before they were made into flicks whereas Preacher...not so much.

There's not enough time in a two hour film to cover any of it; I've just got a bad feeling this will be Constantine all over again. The show wasn't a bad idea, it was just being done by a hack director; if you could get a good list of rotating directors on a TV version of Preacher, it might be salvageable, but what book of preacher would they do for one movie? There's so much golden material, and when you hack it all up and condense it, you get something akin to the 2003 Garth Ennis influenced Punisher movie bullshit fiasco. I rarely comment, this news just upsets me and everyone I know who loves this book.

The "What Happens in Vegas" movie poster makes me not want to see Cameron Diaz in anything again, ever. That thing is dripping with self-absorbed smugness. Plus, Diaz is a bit too old to play Tulip. I'm not a huge Katee Sackhoff fan, but I think that she would make a much better Tulip (and she wouldn't cost as much).

The time to put "Preacher" on the big screen was a decade ago. Now it's old hat. Since a 2 hour motion picture couldn't possibly do right by the series, the studio will get a middling actioner that strips all the "controversial" religious elements out of it and leaves us with, I dunno, "Constantine" or "Max Payne." If it's going this route, just fucking kill it already and move on to something else. I don't want another half-assed comic adaptation. I don't think anyone does.

The movie cannot cover all the cool shit in Preacher, it's just a question of what exactly they'll decide to tackle. I see them maybe throwing Cassidy out the window, tying in a Vampire to this story seems too much for a movie to explain. Starr would have to be in it, but the allfather? The divine retard? Saint of Killers is a must, but could they even tell his story? I guess if they designed it as a trilogy, then maybe they could add people in. The only reason I could see a studio would back this is for a love story, rock star named Assface and killing god. Am I the only one that hated the ending of the series? Besides the fact that they ruined it by telling people what the Saint was going to do years before it happened, the whole riding off into the sunset shit between Jesse & Tulip was just gay. I really thought it should have been a much more tragic ending. And while I don't need to be spoonfed everything, I just wanted to see what exactly happens to heaven, hell & earth with no God or Devil? Does someone take over? Does Genesis destroy the universe? Come on Ennis, help me out here. Jesse-DiCaprio(Gangs of NY style, Timothy Olyphant or Joaquin Phoenix), Tulip-NOT Diaz or Watts, Saint-Henrickson, Arseface-Elijah Wood, Starr-Hugo Weaving, God-Doug Jones.

When I was reading The Preacher, I was casting Rufus Sewell as Jesse and Tim Roth as Cassidy, but I never could pinpoint Tulip. Lance Henriksen is ideal for The Saint of Killers. If this ended up at HBO, I'd fear they'd stick Adrian Grenier into Jesse's boots. I can't come up with a modern choice for Jesse, but I would like to see Ewen Bremner as Cassidy.

Yes, this would have been better on HBO (although I heard HBO was insisting on James Marsden, who's been in too many comicbook movies as it is) But on another note, has any movie's reputation taken more of a hit in a 10 year period than American Beauty? The only thing that comes close in my mind is "Ordinary People." Anything else that comes to mind?

For one, it's very clear that Cassidy is Ennis' pet character, very similar to his take on Constantine. But with Cassidy, ultimately one of main storylines (if not the main one) is the redemption of Cassidy. Such a great character. At first you think he's just a decent bloke who happens to be a vampire, and he helps out the good guys. But then...Cassidy doesn't turn out to be "evil" but he does turn out to be a total shit with only his own best interest at heart, damn the consequences. I can't help but think that Buffy's Spike was modeled after him. Anyway, the uplifting character arc is Cassidy's, whereas with Jesse, Ennis started out with a good idea, but didn't know what to do with him. So by the end, I don't feel that Jesse changes or learns anything. Though the HBO series would have been cool, I don't think all the stories are essential, and I think it could be made into a decent picture. It will just have totally different pacing. And I totally second the notion of a Hellblazer series that's British and removes the memory of the Keanu Reeves crapfest (okay, it wasn't a terrible movie, but it wasn't Constantine). And an Invisibles series? Never happen. At least not in this country. Maybe in England or Scotland, like they had originally planned. Hell, I'm up for any Vertigo title at this point. The superheroes have had their day - it's time for something more interesting. How about a Swamp Thing remake that adapts Alan Moore's stuff and not the Len Wein stuff? Sandman animated, but for adults?

I love Sam Mendes' work, but this needs more than one film. They should have gone the 'Song of Ice and Fire' route and put this on HBO after all. It's the only chance the thing has to do justice to the original work.

American Beauty was nothing but an overrated pretentious bore. Why would the director of Road to Perdition (or Jarhead for that matter) be a good fit for the extremely dark and disturbing humor of Ennis? And what characters are going to need to be excised to get this ANYWHERE near 3 hours? Assface? Saint of All Killers? Jody and TC? Jesse's Mom? The meat fucking guy? Featherstone? The All Father? All of the above? What story arcs will need to be completely eliminated to get this story truncated into a 3 hour movie? Cassidy and Tulip's relationship? The gay detectives? Jesse's back story? Casssidy's origin? The New Orleans voodoo stuff? All of the above? 75 issues into a 2 or 3 hour movie? This will be a complete and utter abomination.

Also, while Mark Steven Johnson seems like a pretty mediocre director, he at least had the right ideas when he was working to produce this thing on HBO. Remember the news from last year about Cronenberg and Verenhoven being approached to direct episodes?
