If you heaven't heard of it, Pencak Silat, is the general name for all the different styles practiced along the Malay peninsula. Its heavily influenced by relgious and cultrural norms of the region. If they use the weapons and brutal take downs of Silat, this movie will be fun as hell.

Now the only question the remains is how many of these films will even be available on DVD over here after their European theatrical runs?

So from here on in, the translation of "Pencak Silat" is "Pencil Stab".

Also, I see that the Landmark theater about twenty minutes from my house is showing My Name is Bruce on November 14th with Bruce Campbell in attendance! That could be cool. It's the same day Let the Right One In hits theaters here in town, along with Quantum of Solace. Gonna be a crowded weekend at the theater.

Visually the hard styles of Silat are fantastic so on the screen they will look great. The soft styles are sort of neat looking to. The have some dance based styles kind of like Brazillian Copieria(sp). Added bonus, the weapons are tough looking and all kinds of beautiful.

There's this show on A&E with these two goofs that travel around the world, spend a few days learning a reginal Martial Art, and then get thier asses kicked. They did an episode on Silat. When I remember the name of the damn show I'll find it and the episode with Silat and give you a link to it. You'll like it.

I loved the whole atmosphere of the movie, the setup, the dynamic of the mom and her history. The ending is, of course, great. I would definitely say I liked this better than say, Devil's Backbone or Pans Labyrinth.

JPT, Im glad you loved Orphanage. I wasn't sure if you would or not. I can't always call your tastes. I think Orphanage had a better emotional through-line than the 2 Del Toro movies you mentioned. I personally prefer Pan's Labyrinth, but I don't think it had the same emotional punch that this film did. I can see Danny crying like a bitch at the end of Orphanage. I have a feeling it would really affect him. Im not saying that from some high and might place. I was very moved by that film's finale. And it's vibe was classic ghost story. Just a great film, for any time of the year.

Halloween isn't a big deal in the UK (though it has been gaining in popularity). How did it get to be a huge celebration in the US?

other than that not much, I just finally started watching season 5 of The Shield. The first episode started strong but after the 4th, it's pretty blah, I'm not really liking Forrest Whitaker's IAD guy. Of course after Glenn Close and Anthony Anderson as the bad guy in the great season 4, they have a lot to live up to.

You know what's funny? I thought season 5 was better then season 4. Different strokes I guess.

More importantly and impressively he was a member of the British T forces. During the run to Berlin in WW 2 T forces were forward operating units tasked with finding Nazi technology, scientests, labs and things like Pattten offices and the like.

The US T forces were highly organized and did a fantastic job, best out of all the allies. The Brits not as much, but man did they have style to burn. They were pirates in every sense of the word and Flemming was in the thick of things. See, badass.

I plan on adding music also (gotta have my tunes!) and could probably figure that one out, but want to find something appropriate and agreeable to more than just myself.

My submission is still on hold- I was going to rewrite it last week, but spent most of it being ill- and I'm still waiting for a pass from my quality control person- she keeps saying things like "stop reading shit like Generation X and recycling the style", so I feel she has a point. Both about me copying style and that GEneration X is shit.

First the ones I liked:

1)Rosemary's Baby: Still classic, but I think it could have done with being stopped before the end. Kept the ambiguity that the baby may not actually be Satan. 8/10

2) Jack Brooks: Monster Slayer- this flirted with greatness, but just missed. I loved the Goodfellas homage/ rip off at the beginning and there were other fantastic moments, but it just felt a wee bit unfulfilling. 7/10

3)Dead Set (You won't get this in America)- an E4 telemovie that blatantly ripped off DOTD and 28 Days Later. Also flirted with greatness without quite making it. The Big Brother contestants were magnificent in their narcissism and stupidity, the production staff were suitably odious, and Zombie Divina was fantastic but it suffered both as social commentary a la DOTD (Big Brother has been on 10 years. Do we really need to be told that it's vile TV and the contestants are morons?) and Zombie action in the style of 28 days- which it frankly stole from. 6/10

4)Doomsday- rocks. Simple as. However, on new viewing I became more aware of how jarring the medieval sequence of it was. It’s at that point that the film loses it’s way. 7/10

5)The Descent. Simply the best horror film made since 2000 (that I’ve seen). 10/10- but may decline with age. Interestingly, Craig Conway- who played Sole in Doomsday- was previously a Crawler in the Descent/

6)Halloween. Yup. Classic. Flawless. Definitive. 10/10

7)Halloween 2. Not as bad as I remember it being. Actually quite good 6/10

The year...who knows? Pick one you like and we'll stick with that.

The US ending for The Descent is supposed to be totally different from the UK version. What happens in the US ending?

2)The Devil's Rejects- the much lauded sequel to HO1KC. And just as shit. Who on earth thought that it was a good idea to give the Halloween remake to that complete twat Zombie? They should have given him TCM remake- it's stylistically much nearer. And the end of Reject's is one of the most truly abhorrent pieces of glamorised violence ever. Crap and if I could give it less than 1/10 I would.

3)Transformers. Ghastly. I now OWN it because one of Mrs. Jarv's work colleagues told her it was good and I was being an elitist snob about it. I wasn't. It's every bit as bad as I remembered it being- except this time I fell asleep in the climactic battle and someone needs to bitchslap Turtorro. 3/10 and that's all down to the ILM work.

That's all. Not a bad hit rate- 7 to 3 and I also watched The Charges play against The Saints when they were in London. And didn't hate it, but it may have helped that it was on the BBC so there were no ads.

Fuck knows why- it stops after the cheap scare with Juno in the car.

Apparantly for The Descent 2 (how the fuck they think this will be good is beoynd me), there are returning cast members. I don't see how seeing as they all die in the proper version.

Watched Kung Fu Panda, Tropic Thunder, Journey to the Center of the Earth and Wall-E. I enjoyed them all but Panda was the best of the bunch. But I can safely recommend them all, although Journey needs lots of booze and the 3-D version to entertain. Otherwise you'll throw something at the screen. And everything you've heard about Tom Cruise in Thunder is true. As a bald fat producer with Popeye arms he steals the show.

If no one has listened to Palin getting punked yet, I highly recommend it. It's comedy gold.

I heard the call to Palin, it's rather amusing. She's sharp as a marble.

I hate that sort of bullying shit that "comics" get up to. The BBC are tying themselves in knots trying to get out of a stupid prank call situation here at the moment.

As much as I dislike Palin, that call just made me cringe. And the fact that they made me feel sorry for her is a very bad thing.

Not being a fan (I bareley remmeber the toys or the movie) it struck me as immensley stupid that these alien robots should have faces. And not just faces, but recognisable human faces- they don't need lips to speak, and they don't eat so why do they have them? Not to mention the fact that they looked rubbish.

And what was with all the animal-esque growling from the Transformers. Their robots not tigers for fuck's sake.

It was rubbish- although I will give you that the initial attack by whatsitsname in the desert was cool, once you waded through some of the most pathetic, trite, cliched dialogue ever put to screen.

Fred is not married, but Fred's girl friend would love that room as well.

There's nothing forced about any of the dialogue in Transformers- "are you in here masturbating? don't worry, we can call it something else like 'Sam's happy time',"

Yuck. Not funny. Not clever. Just awful.

I do give Shia Props though for actually being less annoying than the dialogue.

I didn't stop and go 'ow' or study the damage. I just started walking round the house really fast! Nothing was broke but the toenail turned black and eventually fell off, not before disgorging a load of blood and pus.

Everything about Transformers was stupid. On a much better note, Close Encounters of the Third Kind was on last night on AMC. What I just love about that movie is all the 'extras' and how they give sort of classic reactions to the Aliens' arrival. The dude that races to the portolet when the first show up always makes me chuckle.

Alas, Fred's efforts at creating a story ran into several roadblocks, not the least of which is that Fred is more comfortable writing dialogue than prose.

When you spend $60m on the signing fee for Schevchenko and then a further $300,000 per week on his wages (and he turns out to be a colossal waste of cash) then you are frankly wasting money.

Roadblocks are designed specifically to plough through at great speed. Makes a satisfying noise when they bust. Just go for it, sunshine!

Screw them for making it impossible for others (even relatively big clubs like the clowns I'm stuck with) to compete without a billionaire owner.

Fuck the big 4 for selling out to American "Franchise" owners (Gillette, Hicks and the Glazers) that bought the clubs with no understanding of what a football club is in our culture and lumbered them with hundreds of millions of pounds worth of debt- so that they pushed up ticket prices/ shirt prices and alienated their fan base and the country.

I have the exact opposite problem, I find it so much more comfortable to write prose and really struggle with dialogue- to such an extent that characters seem to be telling stories themselves (hence Mrs. Jarv's mean Generation X analogy).

Got bored not seeing any football though, so I started going along to a local non-league team. Maine Road FC play in the Vodkat Premier League, one league up from the very bottom of the Football Pyramid. Currently, we're 3rd from bottom!

I grew up with the mighty Sheffield Wednesday and so every week now is a fucking torture- but at least the Championship is competitive.

Since I moved south so long ago there are plenty of away games I can go to if I need a fix- and it isn't excrutiating at this level.

In baseball, there was Cal Ripken, Mark McGuire, Sammy Sosa, even Bonds.

Since they are a form of entertainment, I think they should make decent wages (like your equivalent of lawyers seems about right to me) and have a decent medical plan for after sporting life.

The average players career is 3.5 years. 3.5 years to make some money, and that is it. And the only money guaranteed is the signing bonus. A contract is a worthless piece of paper because the team can void it at just about anytime. Rookie contracts outside of top ten draft picks, are comparitively small. The superstars take most of the money, which means the majority of the players are not making millions of dollars a year. In the most violent sport on the planet, where life spans are demonstrably less than any other group, where crippling injuries are greater than any other sport, where life long debilitating injuries that require medical care on small pensions are greater than any industry, football players need to make as much money as possible. I begrudge not one dime to them.

Sports viewing. Hockey, Boxing and Spring league baseball in Arizona are the three best to watch live. Nothing beats an NHL and boxing. Spring baseball is great because the stadiums are small so you're close, they're really nice, the tickests are cheap, the weather is great and the scenery in the stands fucking rocks.

But just like the CEO's it gets to a point where the pay is so astronomical its just mind blowing. Clearly no one on the planet is worth this much money unless they are discovering the cure for cancer or fucking 300 men in under 2 hours with only one bucket of ice. I guess I'm sort of Socialist in my thinking that no one needs to be that rich. I know HOD would agree with me on that. The country seems to be skewed in a very fucked up way at the moment. The middle class is getting smaller, and more and more families are dropping into the lower class income level and the fat cats and CEO's continue to bring in insane amounts of money with massive bonuses. I see all of this as being cyclical . Somewhere along the line the class lines in this country got all fucked up. Working stiffs don't really see much of the rewards anymore, and the insanely rich continue to get insanely richer. Its not just sports, its everything in our society. And to point out how these guys are damaging their bodies and the sport is so violent and all that. I can really care less. End of the day...its a fucking sport. If anyone is in danger and damaging their bodies, its the military. I would rather see them get a big boost in pay and benefits, as well as teachers. Our priorities in this country are fucked. And as long as people continue making excuses for the way things are, things will never change.

Now I want the Jets to make the playoffs, but do you really think that we'll see a good playoff game involving them? They blow. Just like the expanded playoffs blow. Just like expansion blows. There is not a big enough pool of "special" players to pick from where they should have expanded.

And what makes football great for those of us who like it Danny, is several things: the strategy involved, the violence of the game, the level of skill involved in one play vs. the sheer brutality of another, the fact that even the smallest and gifted (Barry Sanders) can excel at a position where someone succeeds with almost pure heart (Walter Payton).

What do people owe "society"? I think they "owe" being responsible, obeying the law and letting others live their lives as long as they are doing the same. Past that I don't think anybody "owes" anything to anybody.

But I do differ with Obama on some of the things he's said about college. I don't think everyone should go to college, as it has been argued to some degree that's why we lost manufacturing here in the U.S. (besides the cheaper labor of course). Trade schools should be a vital cog of the U.S. economy. Here in the Northeast, that has been part of the reason why the home of manufacturing has gone the way of the dodo bird. I'm very hesitant about throwing more money into the educational system, as that does not work. More money does not equal better education. At the local level, we pay way too much in taxes for what little services we receive. School budgets are outrageous and are ill conceived in nature. The pension that teachers receive is ridiculous as compared to what you or I receive in the business world.

I do, however, love his idea of doing community service in return for a $4,000 credit towards college. I think that provides a "real world" learning experience and would hopefully make kids more thankful for their opportunity.

I do agree though, that they should be required to have both feet in bounds.

Rupert Murdoch, Tiger Woods, Brett Ratner and Miley Cyrus could all be out of work nobodies if only people decided they were tired of giving their hard earned money to people who provided nothing of worth in return.

As human frickin' beings, we should feel obligated to help out the less fortunate however we can. If someone is on this plane only to serve their own interests, I'm not sure what the point is. There is no better feeling than improving the life of another person. If you can do it through devoting time and not money, all the better.

I think corporations have a social responsibility that they should adhere to, because without the society that is in place, they would not be profitable/successful.

Voluntary giving has started universities like Duke and Stanford, the NY Public library system, broadway theaters and numerous arts. All these things were started by robber barons who thought they were good things do.

If the goverment forces people to be "giving" that's nothing more then stealing. It uses the coersive force of the goverment and it short sighted. The people with money will just hide it from the State and everbody loses.

Im seeing My Name is Bruce not this weekend, but next, with Campbell in attendance. I'm hoping the movie is fun, but the reviews aren't really positive.

Just read some reviews and it sounds like great fun.

Training Day I thought was a half movie. First half was good second half fell apart for me.

First time writer long time reader. I just wanted to say that I caught Splinter this weekend in Oklahoma, and I haven't really seen much about it, maybe one review a while back. I missed the premiere but saw it the next day. I don't know if the movie is going to get a huge release, but it was on HD Net movies and probably coming to DVD soon. Overall it was a pretty fun little horror movie. Yes the monster was very reminiscent of The Thing, which I am in an argument with someone right now as too which version is better, I say Carpenters. As you've probably heard that this movie is a hearkening back to the good old days of monster movies which is true. Though it does have a big problem of the new form of quick cut editing that has become a favorite to the horror genre thanks to Saw, which was probably my biggest prolem with the movie. The monster looked like it was really cool looking, but you never got a good shot of the monster. I mean you saw more of the cloverfield monster. There really is not that much to dive into about this film, its a simple plot and effective with building tension and the Road Trip guy does a passable job as the geek turned hero. The girl in the movie is passable as the man of the relationship, but not too butch. There was a scene involving an attacking hand that was my favorite scene, though some people thought it was silly. Also Shea Whigham (reading his IMDB page nothing comes to mind as where I would remember seeing him in) character was interesting because it was not the typical bad guy role, and the sound effect when his arm breaks was pretty gut retching (i've broken my arm three times so I've got a good idea of what noise it should make). Overall I would say if you really like horror movies and are burnt out on torture stuff and J-horror check this out, especially if you really liked Slither.

Another thing I would like to say is that even though this was directed by a blimy Brit, he did a good job at ensuring that it was Oklahoma. Even though its only a gas station in the middle of the woods, but it was filmed in Oklahoma. You see stickers for the Oklahoma National Lottery, and there is a scene where there is a stack of Choc beer (brewed in Oklahoma) which I thought was a nice touch.

I have no objections to someone with an effective working life of 10 years earning a lifetimes worth of moolah in that time, but at least have the decency to be grateful and appreciative.

Hilariously, every so often you see cricketers or Rugby Players (a sport as brutal as NFL, but on a fraction of the salary)- the highest paid tend to earn about the same as mid-top lawyers- say things like "we're fucking lucky that we get to play sport for a living".

All I want to see is a bit of appreciation and a bit of fucking gratitude. And that's what's missing from the spoilt fuckers.

I was very restless last night and couldn't fall asleep for the longest time.

I can't wait to watch Hellboy 2 again as I think it will be better the second time around. I plan on watching it back to back with the first one for the full effect.

Hulk is worth picking up. I quite liked it.

Since I can't concentrate on work I'm looking at all my friends on Facebook and realizing how behind in the race I am. All these people younger than me earning twice what I do and looking all J-Crew with the Great Wall or the Eiffel Tower in the background.

Granted, I'm the only one with a kid so I guess I'm the "lucky" one, or that's what I keep telling myself to stop from hanging myself in the shower.

The Hulk was good, I'm just concerned Jarv will be disappointed.

Overall, I think it was a great summer. Oddly, I've watched most movies a second and third time (with my mom and then my wife) and they generally get better or remain OK. Hancock, Get Smart, Zohan and Wanted for instance.

And needless to say Kung Fu Panda, Iron Man, Wall-E, Speed Racer, The Fall, Tropic Thunder, Hulk, Mongol and Hellboy 2 were either all good or great.

Going to watch Prince Caspian on the weekend on that will cap off the summer season.

I have a confession to make guys. I don't what was going on with my life at the time-- but I saw Van Helsing 3 times in the theater. And I was piss drunk every time. I just remember it being hilarious.

Also, it was only a month after Hellboy had been released, and due to the somewhat similar feel, the two drew some comparison and to say that Vanhelsing came up lacking is an understatement.

Even when he's good in the movie, he's hindered by a bad script. The Bodyguard, Rumor Has It, For the Love of the Game and 3000 Miles to Graceland did nothing for me.

I have yet to see Mr. Brooks or Swing Vote.

Still, I loved Robin hood Prince of Thieves, regardless of his lack of an accent. That was one of my favorite movies as a kid, along with the Errol Flynn version.
