I just couldn't believe that Harry wouldn't have figured out Snape was on his side by then, this was especially annoying at the end of Order of the Phoenix but Half Blood kept it going. Still, I'm looking forward to seeing how they pull this off. The Movies have really grown on me.

My biggest concern is the way the early screenings described Harry's view of the big confrontation. If he's not physically there, hidden by his cloak, immobilized by Albus, I'll be very disappointed. It's one of the most powerful parts of all the books.

I like the way it looks and I can see big plot spoilers in that trailer, knowing them from the book. I dont mind if they change this book at all. This was a very weak book with only a few great parts. As long as they have those (memories, Greyback, Malfoy, Snape, The cave, Ginny, Rons drama) then i'll be satisfied.

I love the books but I'm not one of those people who can't handle things being changed for the movies. If it was exactly the same it would be boring, a lazy adaptation, which is sort of what the first two movies were like. You have to dare to change things to make a great movie. For example, the end of the book where Harry is frozen under the invisibility cloak - this would play like shit onscreen because if he can't move we can't see his emotions (we get them described to us in the book). It's way better that he watches from out of sight. Also it looks they've changed the 'romance' side of things to make it more believable, thank god. IMO it's the only thing that JK Rowling messed up on. Harry is suddenly this raging hormonal wreck, obsessed with Ginny even though he never previously looked twice at her. She doesn't show interest in him then they just throw themselves at each other out of nowhere. The movie is going to build this better. I hope the final movie handles this element better too. Looking forward to this a LOT regardless of the early reviews and also the crapness of Order of the Phoenix (effects aside). I still can't believe David Yates was given the last two movies. Just because he pulled in the bucks with Order doesn't mean it was a great film. Alfonso Cuaron made the best movie but the least money!

harry needs to be in the room in the scene at the end. and it needs to be freaking gut-wrenching. like "man, that was brutal" kind of gut-wrenching. Over-all i think that the way the movies has been pretty good considering the vast amounts of information that they need to cram into two and a half hours. granted it should be easier with this book, not really the longest one of them. sometimes people just need to let go and realize it's a loose interpreation of the book. oh, and read the books before you judge, they're not that bad. the limited vocabulary on this board alone proves that some people need a serious literary experience. granted, harry potter may not be the best place to get one.

...is what will kill this for me, if OOTP is any indication. Unmemorable, unaccomplished filler that doesn't do what it needs to do dramatically. Remember the powerful music up to and surrounding Sirius' death? Neither do I. Music doesn't make or break a film at the box office, so the producers were willing to let Yates bring along Hooper, who apparently passed some minimum bar in the stringing-notes-together category. But the film took a SERIOUS artistic blow in my estimation. Like the soul of the film was just sucked out, Dementor-style. Given Hooper's recent work, I have no reason to believe this one will be any different. And no, I'm not biased against "upcoming" composers ... this guy's no Michael Giacchino, let alone early John Williams. (Furthermore, Patrick Doyle was plenty more experienced and accomplished, and I didn't think his HP score was any great shakes either -- just monotonous "beat you over the head" themes droned out at top volume.) Look at it this way ... Hooper's first score was in 1985. He scored OOTP in 2007 -- 22 years later. As for Williams ... well, if you count episodes of "Playhouse 90" in 1956 as a comparable "start," by 22 years into his career he'd done "Lost in Space," "The Reivers," "The Cowboys," "Images," "The Poseidon Adventure," "The Towering Inferno," "Jaws," "Star Wars," "Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "Superman" -- just to name a FEW. The man is a bona fide genius, and you bring in a bench warmer to replace him? Anyway ... apologies to anyone who thought OOTP's soundtrack album was just the bees knees. (P.S. For the record, I agree with Nasty ... Bruce Broughton was BORN to score a Harry Potter film, and would be the ideal non-Williams choice.)

No one with any kind of awareness or appreciation for the power of movie music liked the score for the last movie, and this composer is set to ruin the next three movies. Write a big essay, include audio clips from Young Sherlock, Silverado, etc. Do something. And to the rest of you who care, flood the HP talkbacks with Broughton's name.

I hope it doesn't get glossed over like the Order of the Phoenix treatment. And yes, Dumbledore seems to get more Gandalfier with each movie. Too bad Richard Harris is gone. Not to say our current Dumbledore is bad, but Harris has that gentle lilt in his voice, and every time I read the books that is the voice I hear in my head.

My point is : The franchise is now bloated and lost. Like the later Bond films became. It could be Dungeons and Dragons or anything.... it lost the ambiance made it special in the beginning. Harry looks too old, acts like a rock star and now his walking around naked on stage to prove he is an actor with range. What a nightmare for the producers trying to maintain a perception of childhood..... it has become TOO MUCH. What's next, is Sarah Palin going to have a walk on cameo ? or David Letterman as old Professor Whapadiddle ?....too much....too commercial......not enough respect for the material or genuine film making.

Really looked like Gandalf in the opening of that trailer. Also was it just me or was there something a bit off with Gambon's performance in Goblet of Fire? He seemed very aggressive, whereas in the book's Dumbledore always appears calm even when things going pear shaped, but has this fierce glint in his eye when pushed too far, but always remains stoic. I thought Gambon was good in POA and had moments in OOTP however, but still wish Richard Harris was alive as his Dumbledore was excellent. These days when I read the books, I think of Harris...but when it comes to Dumbledore in action scenes think of Gambon, if that makes sense. BTW- trailer was ok, but I was expecting more, and where the hell was Ron?

The 1986 film TROLL is about a family, with a young boy, who discover that a 'magical world' filled with trolls and other creatures has set up a gateway in the house they're moving into. The main character, the young boy, is named HARRY POTTER JR. Not only that, but the character's father is named HARRY POTTER SR! (imagine that, I know, what a coincidence!) Did Rowling lift the name from there???

The similarities are entirely superficial. Harry is a common first name and Potter is a very common British surname. The stories aren't even vaguely alike. And Rowlin's Potter's father's name is James, not Harry.

There is nothing childlike about the series or the characters anymore. They are in their late teens at this point in the story and in their late teens in real life- at most 2 years off their character's actual ages... which is still WAY closer than the ages of most people playing teens in Hollywood these days. maybe I just don't remember that book so well, but it's exciting seeing stuff i'm not that familiar with. Like a whole new Potter adventure! Def has a follow-on look from Order of the Phoinex, which I thought was great. Wish we didn't have to wait so long! The voice-over may well refer to a school year, but it def sounds like he means 2008. as in "This Holiday season, he's going to find his world turned...upside down! etc".

Gambon has stated in interviews that he has never read any of the Potter books and has no intention of reading any of them. He based his portrayel on a very strict headmaster he had growing up in England. I think for the most part Gambon is alright in the part, but at certain times, like the scene you noted in GOF and his line in OoTP "Dont you all have studying to be doing?"

THE WHOLE MOVIE IS ABOUT SCHOOL CHILDREN YOU IDIOT. More and more thrown in impersonal exploding crap doesn't make the movie better...it makes it worse. It has totally lost focus from the spirit of the original content. They have stolen ideas liberally from LOTR and I even know scriptwriters whose ideas and concepts have been used and arbitrarily thrown in these by the WB producers. They are grasping and grasping trying to stop the audience feeling bored. To stop the audience feeling any sense of repetition, so, like Americans do on talk shows, they throw in guest appearances and novelty acts for stupid people. IT PRECISELY that sense of regularity that defines English culture......maybe Dr Dre or Sarah Palin should have a guest appearance ?...that would keep it hip.......IT IS TIRESOME. Daniel Radcliffe BTW is starring in Equus. Trying very very so desperately hard to gain some sort of credibility for his acting skills to compensate for the fact that he was chosen by his looks not his skill. He never acted before.

Anytime Michael Gambon is on screen in these movies - I replay the scene again in my mind with Richard Harris and his beautifully calm, misty voice and I so wish he had lived to see these films out. Michael Gambon never "got" Dumbledore (he even said as much) and never seemingly recieved any decent direction in the role. He's far too loud and aggressive (in short, he's too headmasterish) in the part and unfortunately - the fatherly and protecting character of Dumbledore underpins far too much in the overall story to be left in such careless hands. I hope some of this is addressed in HBP. Even if it is though; seeing someone with the gravitas that Richard Harris had, summoning up a swirling maelstrom of magical fire to protect Harry during the cave scene would have been SO much cooler. So much more weighty than it will with Gambon. Ho hum. Teaser Trailer looks OK. Nice new scenes added by the looks of it (corn field attack at the Burrow anyone!?). I'll be very dissapointed also if Harry isn't right there in the vicinity of Dumbledores final moments - as the early reviews seem to suggest. That would show a catastophic misunderstanding of the power of that scene. Anyway - whatever. I'm expect by next year I probably won't care quite as much...

I haven't read all the responses so I don't know if anyone else addressed this yet, but Ginny has always had a thing for Harry. This was addressed in the first book/movie. And if you have followed the books all the way through then it's more obvious that she's had this crush on him forever...the only reason she wasn't so bad in the 5th book (I think that one) is because she had a bf. Her attraction was always there...and Harry's attraction came after spending the ENTIRE summer with the Weasleys as addressed in the 6th book so it makes total sense. And he became hormonal in book 4.

I'm going to give Yates the benefit of the doubt; I thought Phoenix was a little underwhelming, but that was one of the toughest books to adapt, especially for a director who was jumping into the series after the half-way point. I thought he did a great job with the action scenes and the photography was slick and stylish--but not overly so. "Half Blood Prince" is my favorite of the books... I think I read it entirely in one sitting, where as I labored through Phoenix and Deathly Hallows. From the opening with the Prime Minister, to the twist in the second chapter, to the brutally emotional ending... the book offers up a lot of prime material for a GREAT movie. Also, I agree with almost everyone that Gambon seems to be a bit too curmudgeonly for Gandolf. but I didn't really fall in love with Richard Harris' portrayal either, he just seemed lethargic and almost TOO soft-spoken. reading the books I always pictured a somewhat jolly man that could flip on the intensity when needed; a Richard Attenborough type.

the early reviews are shite. If they really excised almost the entire flashback plot to Voldemort's youth, then I take serious issue with the adaptation (isn't Steve Kloves back again? yech!). "Half Blood Prince" is all about the backstory. As far as I'm concerned, the "present" is mostly incidental until the very end of the story (mostly it's about Slughorn, who ends up being a maddeningly unimportant character). The Voldemort backstory is imaginative, rich, evocative, and manages to flesh out the character without cheap sentiment or reducing our fear of him (Mr. Lucas, take note). If they miss out on this to focus on the painfully shoehorned romance, it'll be a huge loss. Still, the trailer makes it look pretty serious, so maybe (hoepfully) the early word was wrong.

An evil little troll who used to be a wizard abducts the daughter and puts her in a glass coffin and takes her shape and place. The son is the only one who is suspicious of the "daughter's" odd behaviour. Slowly one by one the troll starts to turn the residence of the other apartments into fairy folk and their apartments into fairy land. At the end of the movie the son with the aid of an old lady who lives in one of the apartments who happens to be a witch manages to defeat the troll, or so he thinks. Now apart from the fact that this is a fantasy movie it doesn't have any serious similarity with the Harry Potter books but one. The family are called Potter, the father Harry Potter SR, the mother Anne Potter, the son Harry Potter JR and the daughter Wendy Anne Potter. Considering that Harry Potter is a common name that many real people have had and we know JKR got the name from neighbours of hers when she was a child the similarity can be put down to coincidence. If the film maker genuinely believed he had been copied he has had 10 years, seven novels and five films to take legal action. Another strange thing is that the Potter family did not appear in the movies Troll II and Troll III. One could argue however that a B movie film maker might take advantage of a name coincidence to gain free publicity when planning to do a remake of their original movie. Another point is the popular British movie Carry On Camping features a character called Harriet Potter who befriends a character Charlie Muggins and features a big character who works at at boarding school called Miss Haggard. Likewise the Monty Python Science Fiction sketch featured a Harold Potter. Not forgetting the classic childrens series Chigley which featured Harry Farthing the Potter. Finally lets us not forget the book Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm.

Harris was perfect casting. They should have got someone else to play Dumbledore. I hated the "last" book. All over the place. and anyway its not the last book. Rowling says she will do another one in ten years. SHe came under huge pressure from her daughters mates to write one more.

A lighter tone would just ruin what this series has been building up to. Yeah, it's great to have some humor from the characters and some marvelous sfx, but no pissing about with the actual story. These movies just got better as they progressed, the darker tone raising the quality above the average all-ages fantasy film.

Can seriously piss off to some harry potter fan site, where they bitch and moan about house elves being written out of the script of whatever. They are the LOTR equivalents of people who could not enjoy that first film because Tom Bombadil wasn't in it. Once and for all: a BOOK is a BOOK and a FILM is a FILM.

What's up with you? I don't see the producers desperately grasping for ideas - they've got huge big books to adapt. Daniel R has got great reviews in Equus, and is better and better in the HP movies, so who cares if he didn't act before? He was about 11 years old, for god's sake! (Although you are wrong - he did act before, in a BBC adaptation of David Copperfield.) The franchise becoming bloated? I thought the most recent movie was much smaller scale than the one before it. If you want to see a franchise becoming bloated by movie 5, take a look at James Bond. (That's You Only Live Twice.) But... surely all that anger... you're just joking, right? RIGHT?
