It's like Hollywood has all of a sudden decided all of the '80s properties aren't worth developing. First Masters of the Universe, now the A-Team...don't get me wrong, I wasn't exactly salivating at the notion of a new Mr. T, but it's a trend that concerns me. All the worthy properties of the '80s may get overlooked if the overall stigma of making '80s-related films goes south. I mean, they just GOTTA make Voltron...

Don't forget Higher Learning. I watched that when it first came to video. I just saw it again for the first time in years, and it ages like milk. You can study all the filmmakers and writers and editing techniques you want, but if you don't have the talent, or at least enough to last more than one movie, then it's going to show. Boyz N The(a?) Hood hasn't aged like wine either.

O, no, the other way. Just leave it as it is, Fox. Well, given the talent that Fox has scared off in the past decade or so this does not surprise me. Ironically, the best A-Team version was 'made' by Fox (The Family Guy spoof). They should've done this either 10 years ago or not at all. Since it's not ten years ago they can better leave it and do something completely different: DEVELOP SOMETHING FUCKING ORIGINAL!!!!!

by Vern

If somebody smart was doing it. Yes, the TV show is dumb, but it's the perfect '80s style action movie concept: team of colorful badasses with different expertises framed by the military, on the run, using their skills to help people. So you got heroic rogues, you got a con man, a crazy man, a big muscle dude with a mohawk, a cigar chomping leader. Forget the show, the movie could be completely badass. COULD be. Probaly wouldn't be, but could be.

Singleton talked the right talk too, saying he wanted to recapture the fun action movies of the '80s, mentioning PREDATOR and LETHAL WEAPON. He said he wanted Bruce Willis as Hannibal, Woody Harrelson as Murdock, ECW guy as B.A. - all brilliant. I'm not sure Singleton could've pulled it off though. But I expect them to replace him with somebody worse.

By the way I would like to see Nick Nolte as Hannibal, John McTiernan as director, A.B. King as executive producer.

Is anyone actually a fan of this show?

Many of the complaints of tv shows into movies is that the movies end up injecting huge amounts of action etc - they lose the actual spirit of the show. You couldn't do this with The A-Team. I'm of an age where The A-Team show didn't really do anything for me anyway, I was a little bit too old when it came out - though my girlfriends brother loved it - he's four years younger than me. But I think that it's a property that could translate well onto the screen.

A lot of people hate Starsky and Hutch - me, I quite like it. But much of the hatred seems to come from the fact it went a bit Brady Bunch, self aware comedy - ideally it should have been a little more Magnum Force / French Connection but I'd have rather they did the comedy than turn it into Lethal Weapon

Singleton is a smart Smart man....an A-TEAM film would suck

I've rewatched Hancock in it's extended form and the additions (which i enjoyed and were only taken out to get the PG-13) are in the first half. As i said in my post, he fucked the 2nd half of Hancock. I thought the first half of Hancock was good. I agree that the producers (see my Goldsman rant) and studio were also responsible, but i don't consider Berg a complete 'gun for hire', so he's the first person i hold responsible. Michael Mann should have made it years ago. It's a shame he backed out.

Everything that was good about the A team was due to the prevailing thoughts and attitudes of the mid 1980's. It is therefore impossible to replicate its success today because all those things have changed. Which means it will be made in line with modern sensibilities and will therefore not resemble the original to any degree and so will not be the A team. The only real questions are the peripherals like, will they get a decent cast ? keep the van ? will they get to make something in a shed/garage ? all else is a forgone conclusion.

Are you kidding me. I've always been saying if John Singleton didn't have this, it should go to Fox's it mega filmmaker JAMES CAMERON so he can get back into a modern day action film. Cameron has two heavy sci-fi films with AVATAR and BATTLE ANGEL. Maybe after AVATAR, Jim could direct a 80 million budget THE A-TEAM film and get his best action star friend ARNOLD SCHWARZENEGGER to play HANNIBAL. This is the best news Singleton is now off. Fox, if you read this...give Cameron and Arnold a call. You owe them this project since us fans never got to see the Schwarzenegger/Cameron/Fox PLANET OF THE APES team-up!

by ABking
Oct 24th, 2008
09:36:24 AM
Singelton is a good director, but fuck him! Stallone can carry this entire production and for a reasonable price. Fox should hire him to star (as Hannible if Arnold or Bruce don't bite), produce, co-write and direct this thing. He brought Rambo in on a 50 million budget and not only made the film look like it cost much more, but he made one of the best action films in the last decade. Sly knows how to take 80's properties and breath life back into them. Singelton said he wanted an 80's vibe ala PREDATOR and LETHAL WEAPON...Stallone was/is THE 1980's:)

Sure, Magnum had its share of silly episodes (and God did I wish Magnum would’ve blow away Jessica Fletcher Ivan style during that horrendous crossover ep) but if it weren’t for the stache (and one of televisions first extended portrayals of Vietnam veterans) there would be no A-Team. Just watch Did You See the Sunrise (parts 1 & 2). The quality of the show speaks for itself. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m gonna go run around the backyard in my Hawaiian shirt and Tiger’s cap. Oh, and my pick for Magnum in the upcoming (?) flick is Aaron Eckhart.

I found the full quote where Singleton mentioned PREDATOR: "it’s kind of in the tradition of the 80’s action pictures, the man’s movies like Die Hard, Predator, Commando, or even Lethal Weapon – more so than anything else. The action is very serious, but there is humor. That’s what we are going for."

I like the sound of it because I love most of those movies and I think very few if any modern action movies capture the feel of those ones. So I was excited that he was looking at those as models.

As for the "'80s retro" thing everybody keeps mentioning, okay, this is based on a TV show from the '80s. But other than that I don't think it was retro, it was going to take the same premise in the modern day. I'm pretty sure they wouldn't be playing with Rubik's cubes and going to see E.T. at any point.

I know nobody likes it but I think MIAMI VICE was actually a good movie and the right attitude for this type of thing, he went and did a modern take on what he was originally trying to do with the show, a moody, gritty, astmospheric look at the world of undercover narcotics officers in Miami. I would like to see the same sort of philosophy applied to the A-Team - without nostalgia taking the original premise, capturing a similar mood but going further to fulfill the potential of the concept. It would be more lighthearted than MIAMI VICE of course.

Hey, maybe as long as Steve Soderbergh has gone nuts somebody should trick him into doing it. The OCEAN'S series has obviously dried out, this could be his new all-star vehicle.

No Vern, not Soderbergh...Sly or Cameron

Vern, thanks for the full quote. Given the fact Singelton was going to do THE A-TEAM like how two Arnie films (COMMANDO & PREDATOR) were in tone, why not see if Arnie is coming back to films and wait. Wouldn't it feel like a real EVENT action film if the first film he did was a remake of a LOVED tv show? And if Arnie is too busy with PREDATOR 3 or even another CONAN or TRUE LIES movie, Stallone or Cameron should direct it. Sly is one bad ass action filmmaker!

Fonz jumped the shark in the 1977. You're a bit off-base with that one as far as clever punning goes. But I get what you mean! They should introduce a cute little kid to make A-Team "fresh" again! ;)

I have the 1st two series on dvd and they are a hoot, I was wondering how i would react to teh show after all this timje as i loved as a kid. This could so be done with serious action,we could have a great series of movies. The only person i can imagine equaling MrT would be Adawale AA(MrEko, Adibisi from Oz). Christian Bale as Face(as was rumoured yrs ago) and the idea of Bruce willis as Hannibal sounds good to me. Don't know about Murdock though, that part has to be cast perfectly, I think Woody Harrelson is funny in some things, but thought his part in Scanner Darkly was a little overplayed.

Murdock = David Cross. OR, RDJ = Murdock & Stiller = Hannibal/Face. Yes, that's right. Steal the casting of other entertainments.
