I had the pleasure or meeting him during the Drive-Invasion at The Starlight Six Drive-In in Atlanta a few years ago (a badass annual event here in the dirty south). He was a total class act, although his facilities were a bit limited by then. The coolest thing I remember about him was that he still had a posse! I was quite impressed. Sorry to hear the news. SO LONG DOLEMITE!

when I open up Ain't It Cool. I knew he was gettin up there because I saw him perform in a wheelchair on his 80th birthday. But it's a shame to see the man go. He was actually a big inspiration to me - even to the end he was doing his own thing and working independently on whatever shoe string budget he could. Following his own filthy mouthed dream. And flying to Seattle to perform with a broken hip on his 80th birthday. "That's right, I really did that shit!" RIP Petey Wheatstraw.

Here's a review I wrote of that show if anybody cares:

What can you say about the passing of a legend?

A few years ago, while I was managing Wild & Woolly Video in Louisville, we brought Rudy to town to do his comedy act at the local comedy venue and to sign some autographs in our store. Everytime he called us on the phone (before and after) he introduced himself as Dolemite, which alway got me excited. Damn, I just talked to Dolemite! Rudy was in the process of staging a late career comeback, finishing "The Return of Dolemite" and bringing his stage show back to the masses. His friend and bodyguard/ manager Napoleon was a damn nice guy too. I asked the store manager if he thought any kids today would remember Rudy or come out to see him. He said, "You don't bring Rudy Ray Moore to town because he's hot with the kids. You bring him to town because he's a legend." He was right. They came to see him in droves, selling out 5 out of 6 shows. Only the early, no smoking show didn't sell out. I was lucky. I not only got to see his act, but I got to shake his hand and tell him that I laughed my ass off. He replyed, "Y'all have made me feel so loved." Seriously. This bad mutha will be missed.

Moore was interviewed in Giant Robot magazine a few years back and it was great. As he's not Asian, their excuse for interviewing him was that he invented "pimp fu." I also agree that "Petey Wheatstraw, the Devil's Son-in-Law" is one of the most amazing spectacles you will EVER see.

I remember in Disco Godfather ( well the copy at my video store was titled Black Avenging Disco Godfather) he's outside the drug manufacturing hideout in full kung fu glory , and some guy goes jogging by. He stops the runner and says "Can you help me ? ..Man?" The jogger stops and says " What is it ?" Rudy pauses and says " Angeldust factory ....Man" The jogger nods " Let's kick some ass!" It reminds me of 64 oz bottles of Colt45 and a big ole joint!

I saw RRM live in East Austin in a small nightclub on Montopolis, probably around 1993. The only reason I knew he was in town was a text-only old fashioned show poster that the bar had pasted up on some lightpoles on the East side. Rudy Ray personally sold his records, posters, and other assorted stuff in between sets. He told us he was doing a movie called Stagger Lee (must have fallen through). I'm pretty sure he did something mind altering between sets. He came back out and was trying to redo the same jokes he already told. It's was great fun though. I called the phone number on his business card and left a message saying that I thought he should come back to town and that I thought with some advertising or publicity he could make a lot more money. I was shocked to get a message on my answering machine from the legend himself. I think he thought that I was a promoter, or something. He was very friendly. He also sent me a postcard from Vegas. I mean, wtf? Who does that? He did come back to austin about a year later and did a sold out show on 6th street and a mobbed guest appearance at I Love Video. What a legend. You will be missed.

I leave the interwebs for a few days and I come back to this... Can't trust you people with nuffin... Rudy Ray Moore is exactly why I love movies, rather than just like them a lot... Sure movies are an art form, that can compete with any others, but it is stuff like Dolemite that makes movies the greatest artform of them all... That's what RRM said at the end of the radio spot for HUMAN TORNADO. Watch out mister, here comes a twister. I highly recommend the DOLEMITE soundtrack CD. I never got around to buying it until last year or so but I don't know what the fuck I was doing before that. Just from watching the movie I never noticed how funky the music is, and the album is very much in the spirit of Dolemite's crappy home made feel because the songs don't fade out, they just abruptly stop like somebody hit eject on the tape. Then at the end it has a bunch of radio spots, all narrated by Rudy. Every time I hear them I think they oughta do that for movies now. "Max Payne starring me, Mark Wahlberg, and that baaaad Mila Kunis. Rated PG-13, parental guidance suggested."
Damn it...

I think it was "Let me tell you a story of the bad-ass Easy-E. He was drinking whiskey and gin at the age of three." My first experience with Dolemite was in "The Big White Hype" when Damon (Jimmy 'The Grim Reaper' Roper)Wayans is watching it before his fight with Peter ('Irish' Terry Conklin) Berg. Dolemite screams a great line that sounds like "You rat-soup eatin' honky MOTHERFU@#%$!!!" Classic.
