I'm not a huge fan of this 'origin' tale but then I'm not a crazed trekkie either. BUT - the dude from Heroes is actually pretty damn scary accurate as a young Spock. Not bad at all. Karl Urban also looks a bit better than I thought he would (he seemed like a weird pick). Kirk looks completely wrong BUT Chris Pine was hilarious in Smokin Aces (an otherwise shitty film) so I'm betting he does a good job.

i've never been big fan of Star Trek...i DID watch Star Trek The Next Generation and Star Trek Deep Space Nine every now and then, if it was on and i was bored...and some of it was very entertaining. the ONLY Star Trek movie i enjoyed was Wrath of Kahn...the rest were dull and watered down in comparison...at least in MY opinion. this looks interesting...not necessarily in a "awesome"-way....but a more "curious"-way.

He looks incredible as Spock. Can't wait to hear how his voice sounds. Spock's baritone vox is so distinct and recognizable. One point though, Quinto's Spock hair in the EW photo is different from the shot of him throttling the guy. The hairline is clearly different. I hope it's not quite as it is rendered on the EW cover.

I was skeptical of this, but I do love how Pine, Quinto, and Urban especially, have the body language of these characters down. I'm excited that it's new, and old at the same time, that this will be big budget and could break the Trek slump. I was on the fence about the Bond movie, but now I'm definitely going to see it so I can catch the Trek trailer.

Honestly, it looks like a Dawson's Creek movie. This was a terrible idea. I say after this, wait a few years and bring the Next Generation crew back for one more adventure. That way they'll all be the perfect age for a "bringing the old crew back together for one last mission" deal.

His was the one bit of casting I truly could not grasp. I thought he was completely and utterly wrong for the role. But based on these stills, his might be the most dead-on look of the bunch. I like the glimpse of Pegg as Scotty, too. Now, just looking the role isn't going to make the movie work on its own, but these images look like a step in the right direction to me.

The Good: Quinto as Spock (minus the very Sylar esque-looking I'm going to choke a bitch photo). Pine has the look and the attitude one would expect of a young Kirk, just look at that smirk. The Bad: Winona Ryder? The entire premise has me wondering about this movie and how it might fuck with continuity. I can't accept the idea of a right out of the academy Kirk buddying up with the entire crew of the Enterprise and taking the center seat. I'll assume there's a good reason and by the end Spock and Pike will be on the bridge where they are supposed to be and Lieutenant Kirk is off to his assignment. Also Chekov would be much, much to young to be featured, he was the youngest crew member that joined as an ensign in the middle of the five year mission. These are continuity issues that I really hope the movie has a damn good explanation for. And while I like that they are using the "classic" uniforms as a base for the designs, I have to say I hate ribbing. Like Robin Williams said, "if you want ribs, get some barbeque." The undecided: The bridge design, not just the Apple-inspired look of the thing, but the layout as well. I'd have to see more of it. No doubt there will be cries that it appears too modern (which compared to TOS, it does), but I want to see more of it before I can really judge it. John Cho never really impressed me as a great choice for Sulu, Ando from Heroes would have been a better choice in terms of look and well, not playing characters that are stoners (although I suppose if I bring that argument up about Cho, the same should be said for Pegg, but come on, it's Simon Pegg... which could also be a detriment, same with Sylar-Spock, trying to see these characters as Kirk, Spock, etc, when we are so used to Shatner, Nimoy and company). Those are my thoughts on this, the jury is out, but it is nice to see more of the movie, which I am anxiously anticipating. We've sat through Kirk running away from God only to have him blown up by a Bird of Prey, how much worse could this be? (and nothing, nothing in Insurrection or Nemesis was nearly as bad as watching Kirk fight God).
I dig the costumes but...

According to trek lore, Kirk's the youngest person to make Captain, but Pine looks like he's in his mid 20s in those photos. If we're still using currenty military as an analogy, he'd be 22 before even leaving the Basic School and stil need at least another six to eight years to climb the ladder to Lieutenant even at an accelerated rate. Most Captains (equivelent rank of Colonel for you Army guys) are in their 40s at the earliest. But still, if that's my only gripe then I guess Abrams is a doing a good job so far.

by IndustryKiller!
Oct 16th, 2008
04:01:49 PM
The dialogue is tight and true to both their characters. They are brought together to debate over Kirks rigging of the Kobiyashimaru by the Starfleet council. Spock is suitably logical, disconnected, and condescending and Kirk is cocky but calculating posing a very good counterargument saying that if it's rigged for impossibility to begin with then all other riggings thereof are fair game and questioning whether Spocks lack of emotion really gives him a command advantage. The only flaw I felt in the scene was that Kirk at one point refers to Spock as "Spork". I'm not even joking. it seemed like such a cheap joke in an otherwise solid exchange.

I worked a bit on the set. I didn't think it was terribly pertinent information and Im not kidding when I say the set was so pleasant and everyone was working so hard and JJ Abrams and his Assistant director Tommy (who is Scottish) were such nice fellas I didn't want to ruin any surprises. But now enough is out that I don't think im ruining anything by saying that that scene at least is solid. In it Kirk is called out by the Academy for cheating and calls out Spock so he can defend himself. It's a lively exchange with a few insults thrown back and forth. At one point Kirk says something like "I suppose you think me an idiot" and Spock responds something akin to "That's a fair assumption." That was totally paraphrased btw. It was hard to get a reading on Pine's Kirk since the scene is very straightforward but he delivered the lines solidly and seemed to have a bit of defiant arrogance without coming off like an asshole. You kind of root for him in the scene because Spock drops the "You are human and therefore weak" gauntlet. Quinto was very subtle, almost underplaying it, I'll be interested in seeing how it looks on screen in the finished version. The scene ends with a planet that shall remain nameless being attacked.

...most complaints i hear refer to an "apple store" look and being too "SHINY". HAS ANY OF YOU SEEN STAR TREK!!!! This is not STAR WARS people! Star trek has always been "bright and shiny". In fact, that's what Lucas was designing against, the star trek shiny look. And the apple store look was itself inspired by old Star trek mid-sixties future design. Apple is riping off star trek, not the other way around. I see nothing in these photos that doesn't reek of Trek inspired ascetics. I know you all want dark and dirty all time kids, but that isn't star trek...so lay off.

Not that many notables. actually, just stuff here and there. Star Trek was the last big one. here in LA these little odd jobs are just what people do when you want to get involved in the biz so to speak. Pine is actually 28 years old. Granted, he does look younger. Shatner was only 4 or 5 years older than that when he made the Trek pilot. Certainly not way off base.

Quinto is 31. Nimoy was 34.

Urban is 36. Kelley was 45.

Pegg is 38. Doohan was 45.

Saldana is 30. Nichols was 33.

Cho is 36. Takei was 28.

Yelchin is 19. Koenig was 30. (Chekov was supposed to be younger than that.)

This concludes my long waste of time and effort. I'm still thinking this flick could be good.

The look really reminds me of Galaxy Quest, which isn't a good thing when you consider GQ is 10 years old and was a parody of Trek.

I totally agree though about Urban, he was the one I thought would be least like Bones and amazingly appears to be the one most like his character. Good for him.

Maybe it could be a good film despite doing stupid things with the bridge design, but it is being written by Kurtzman and Orci, who already ruined Transformers (with Bay's help) so if the story and the look suck, what does this film have going for it?

And I can't understand why some people are so obsessed with the great unwashed mass of humanity thinking Star Trek is "cool". Star Trek is not cool. It never has been cool. It never will be cool. Many of us have no problem with that and have loved (portions of) it anyway. Embrace your geek, people. Let your geek flag fly.

Everyone is 30 plus except for the kid playing Chekov or how ever you spell it. Pine isn't 30 but 28 is close enough. I don't what some are complaining about cause everyone looks like freaking adults and not the Hills or 90210 cast. What a bunch of stupid motherfuckers. Star Trek is NOT a summertime adventure flick and how typical of Paramount after all these years to not understand something as basic as that. A new approach with fresh eyes. I think it looks cool. I don't think it looks " Gay ". which seems to be the term people love to use when wining on the internet about something. I think this movie will do well because Abrams seems to have a proper handle on what's needed for this. Also Nimoy has given it his approval. Star Trek Dead? Ha! Long live Star Trek! Can't wait!

This is not the way to do a revisit to the 60's-era Trek. It must either be done authentically (and that means 60's era design, tightened up slightly, perhaps), and must fit into a loop with 60s Trek. Judging by the pics, it looks laughable and like Star Trek 90210. I'd like to see a serious, edgy Trek with period detail. Maybe add realistic effects and physics, but leave the original bridge set intact. Or do it 100% CGI, with Shatner and Nimoy's voice, or qualified imitators. Don't use pretty boy actors. Lame.

Since the movie starts off during the NEXT GENERATION era, they should show Picard and the Enterprise try to stop the renegade Romulans, but are unable to stop them from going back in time, luckly Nimoy Spock is on hand to try to save the day. As for why the bridge looks different, who's to say that when the renegade Romulans went back in time that they didn't destroy the original Enterprise being built in space, and that's why this "new" enterprise is being built on Earth (so it can't be attacked) and that the look of the inside is different now because of the renegade time bandits. Ah, that old chestnut. Nobody serious is expecting "cardboard sets". The bridge is a nice update / translation – it’s brighter and easier to film. If you notice the shot is taken from the science officer (Spock)’s position. The command chair looks as iconic as it should and navigation and helm are in their appropriate positions. The standing console that is next to Bones 2.0 harkens back to Christopher Pike’s ship from the original pilot and re-imagined in “The Menagerie”. I assume that engineering is located either to the left of the console or is part of the console itself. The Turbo lift behind Kirk is gone replaced by other consoles. I bet this bridge has a bathroom. The shots look jaw droppingly amazing and I can not wait for this film to open. No doubt, 12:01 showing. Too cool.

SPOILERY SPOILERY SPOILERY THEORY
by Alex Childress
Oct 17th, 2008
12:02:53 AM
I'm not yet sold on Pine as Kirk (how can any but Shatner master the self-confident swagger of James T.?), and Aussie Urban doing DeForest Kelly's southern accent scares me. But, I've got a theory as to how it plays out. I bet it follows Nemesis, and the upheaval in the Romulan Govt after that, but mentioning no more than that. That explains the Romulan space pirates, and lets say that they stumble upon something kept secret from Starfleet for decades - The Guardian of Forever. Nero, realizing a way to go back in time, decides to destroy the Federation responsible for the end of Romulus as he knows it. A young Federation, unaware of the full might of Romulan weapons, is stunned by random attacks by a ship that can fire while cloaked. Its up to one of the men who's kept the secret of the Guardian, Nimoy Spock to go back in time, and warn the one man in Starfleet with the mental capacity to understand what's going on - himself. This leads to Spock's constant assertations throughout the Original Series and especially on 'The City of the Edge of Forever' that time travel is scientifically impossible - to keep a dangerous weapon secret. Its up to a young Kirk and crew to go on a MacGuffin mission while the ulterior motive, with Spock guiding it, is to track down these renegade Romulans and stop them. There's just one problem - this never happened before, and the Romulan's have already changed the timeline irrevocably. History as Nimoy Spock knows it has been re-written, and he will cease to be. Leaving this ship, this crew, to truly and fully journey on their own into a new frontier.

I like the uniforms, nice blend of retro design and futuristic fabric. The actors are good likenesses, and I look forward to seeing how they handle their roles. And the bridge, wow. I really like it. It needs to be updated and given more of a futuristic look. The old angular and featureless surfaces lit up with bright colors just wouldn't do it anymore. Fine for a low budget show, but not for a movie. Trek needs a reboot to revitalize it and make it relevant again. The Next Generation and all its spinoffs failed to do anything exiting with the potential they had...frankly they were boring. I just hope that they do something really wild and exciting with the story. To hell with moldy old continuity....give us a reason to get excited about Trek again.

I think the deal is that today, people tend to look younger than people from two or three generations ago who were the same age, especially if they're an actor. It's all due to how we dress, style our hair, and take care of ourselves compared to prior generations, along with a mental (and somewhat immature?) outlook on life.
Alex Childress: It's not the Guardian of Forever
by Prof. Pop-Cult
Oct 17th, 2008
03:14:26 AM
Because Harlan Ellison raised a stink about this possibility, threatening to sue if this was true. If it is true, then maybe Paramount paid off Ellison for the complete rights to have the Guardian of Forever be used in this reboot.

But I have another theory that could work: Maybe this reboot movie ties in (although indirectly) with the series Enterprise. Eric Bana is actually FutureGuy from that series. The screenplay could reference the Enterprise series, without actually needing to explain things in geeky detail to the audience: Bana could be a Romulan from an undetermined future timeline, and he could be shown in a few scenes protected by reptillian humanoid -- these alien bodyguards wouldn't need to say anything, but Enterprise series fans would recognize them as Suliban.

However, I predict the most likely explanation is that they will just present a completely different time travel plot device which has not been used in any prior Trek TV show or movie. Boring.

This is a fresh start, so why would they cast actors in their late 30's and 40's? Chris Pine doesn't have to look like a young William Shatner, who has become a fat, bloated, living mockery of himself. The original intent for Captain Kirk, as I recall, was as a young, hotshot, Star Fleet officer who given his first command and put on a dangerous, 5 year mission to "explore strange, new worlds". In other words, Pine is perfect for Kirk, Quinto is perfect for Spock, and all of you haters should shut your pie-holes.

What happened to the days when actors were cast that had real acting experience? Chris Pine's biggest claim to fame is Princess Diarheas 2. All this hollywood fluff is being cast like reality television. Get very good looking young people, have hacks like Dick Kurtzman & that little porker Dorky Orci write a quick silly story, and all the young people will spend twelve bucks to come and see it. I was dragged to an indy film called "Bottleschock", which was surprisingly good. The star was Chris Pine - he was excellent...I have a lot of faith, based upon that movie, that he can definitely make a good Kirk.
I'm late to the party here but here's what I think.

Here's what I think:

1) Zachary Quinto looks nothing like Leonard Nimoy in his profile.

2) The guy playing McCoy looks like he just walked off "New Voyages" or some other amateur fan film.

3) The Romulan scene scares me. It looks EXACTLY like the Remans from Nemesis.

4) Uhura is way hotter than Nichelle Nichols ever was. AND

"looking like crap" is not only vague, but very subjective. Should we all just take that literally: you think it looks like they're all in a room built out of feces? In set design class, its the first rule: try not to use excrement for your materials when designing science fiction sets that should reflect a sense of optimism in the culture that designed it. What set do you want Mr brownstone? And, you know, try to not say " i want a set that isn't crap."
For all you people who "know" star trek...

The writers of this film have already mentioned the Next Gen episode "Yesterdays" enterprise (one of the most acclaimed episodes ever) as a huge influence on this new story. Now, if all of you out there complaining about continuity and the new design of the bridge would just think about Yesterdays Enterprise and how time travel effected our heroes and their environment, you'll see that all this bitching and moaning is a waste of time. Cannon is safe and sound people. To spell it out for all the trekkies; remembering the Next Gen episode mentioned above, it would be like seeing the Enterprise D bridge after the Enterprise C went through the time rift and saying "What the fuck happened to the bridge? and what's Tasha Yar doing there and why is Wesley Crusher an actual officer, this totally shits on next gen cannon." UNDERSTAND PEOPLE.
FYI: Those EW photos are by Jill Greenberg...

Timelines, reboots, refits bla bla bla. The enterprise and especially the bridge should have been a reproduction of TOS set. I mean dammit if we wanted a new look we watch somthing else like um.."galaxy quest". If the Discovery in 2010 was diffrent than the discovery in 2001 and hal was a diffrent voice it wouldnt have the same feel. WTF is wrong with the hacks in hollywood that want to sell the public what the sales dept. want them to buy? Come on guys i understand your intentions with the new design but YUCKY YUCKY!It makes the enterprise look like a joke! big deal the saucer section is close if everything else is way off. Im sure an exact copy of the TOS enterprise would have been better received by fans old and new considering all of us on earth have been looking at the real thing for 40 years. You used the old sound effects the original characters and NCC-1701 why break symetry with a cheap looking generic bridge? there is much to consider here and im sure that if in future Captain Kirk ST movies if it was decided that the bridge should be a repro of TOS bridge (with maybe better lighting than TOS) the veiwers would love it more than you could imagine and forgive instantly the gross waste of eyesight seeing the new bridge. The old bridge was kinda crude with toggle switches and jewel lights and yes it would seem by modern hollwood standards arcahic but this is STAR TREK (captain Kirk generation) Not TNG! The movie was awesome, the actors were great, But the sets SUCK! PLEASE, PLEASE PLEASE! put back the old bridge or take the money made from this film and make galaxy quest sequels at least the story would fit the look.
Saturday night live had a better bridge
