This was the last film of BNAT 9, and I've been telling people ever since that "next Halloween, there's a really sweet movie you gotta check out!" Folks have been stoked to see this. I've been looking forward to seeing it again too. It's a terrific franchise just waiting to get started and Mike Dougherty poured his heart into it. And it's positively corporate INSANITY to not release it already.

I'm sure it's all related back to Superman Returns. Did some studio executive find out that Dougherty was spending all his time on the Trick R Treat film instead of SR and decided to punish him? Or did he badmouth some suit after SR didn't do a Dark Knight? Maybe he signed a contract that demanded a theatrical release and refused to back down when they wanted to go direct to dvd with it? Any rumours?

by HarryBlackPotter

07:15:34 AM
Something twisted and gay has gone down here folks. I'd be very surprised even someone in Warner Bros has a grudge against Dougherty - maybe Dougherty refused to blow him at a part, who know - point is people are asking a lot of questions about this movie and are DEMANDING answers. It doesn't help that Dougherty hasn't said much at all, but it looks like something 'personal' is behind all this. Someone needs to get this shit sorted as this film should have been released AGES ago - and should have been on most people's DVD / Blu Ray shelves by now. Seriously, WARNER BROS AND DOUGHERTY, BURY THE HATCHET AND RELESE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw this book this weekend at Barnes & Noble, prominently displayed: http://www.amazon.com/Trick-Tr eat-Mayhem-Mystery-Mischief/dp /1933784512/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8 &s=books&qid=1223988040&sr=8-2 It made me think we were finally getting the movie. Seriously WB, WTF? I'm not sure I've ever seen a lavish making-of book for a movie that has no release date. But the book was very cool and based on the screen shots and concept drawing looks freaking awesome.

I don't see how this movie would have NOT made money if it was released this week or next week.

just more proof that movie execs haven't got a fucking clue. The movie's made the hard part is done. How does it even have a chance to earn money for you if you just sit on it? Idiots.

...and the movie was a blast. The audience ate it up. Some great moments of dark comedy; one involving chocolate-blood vomit, and another a cat. Dylan Baker and Brian Cox -- both of whom have played child molesters -- were superb. The practical creature design for the Sam character was terrific. WB are absolute fucking morons for sitting on this. Had they released it this weekend instead of Body of Lies, it not only would have beaten Quarantine, but it would have slit Beverly Hills Chihuahua's throat.

I am entirely shocked T'R'T has not made it to theaters this year. I have been looking forward to seeing it again since BNAT9, and I could not have imagined this would have happened. For my eleven bucks plus popcorn, that cut was ready to go ten months ago. I can sort of see how somebody could go crazy perfectionist in the editing room shuffling things around forever (in fact, no matter what the final result in theaters, this would be a great project for playing around with experimental amateur recuts), but it wouldn't have been necessary, and if there was a problem, I don't think it was that at all. I really think the problem is most likely that Warner just doesn't know what to make of this movie. It's scary, but it's also intensely fun. I haven't seen anything like it in years, maybe ever. It does have kind of that "Goosebumps with a budget" (@killianx) feel in a way, but no, it's actually scary too, and not without more mature themes here and there. Maybe more like Goosebumps grown up: Fun without being tediously corny, scary without being senselessly depraved. I utterly loved watching this as an adult on its own terms, but I can't help thinking how much I would also love to be a father with a 12-14 year old beside me in the theater for this movie. And there, I bet, is the problem. What you might not get with this movie is stoned frat boys sitting around the Sigma house afterward saying, "duuuuude, it was like, he was all *skwsh chonk thwash* and she was all AAAAA!" And I'd almost bet Warner is seeing that as The Audience for horror. In short, Warner can't figure out who the audience is and how to sell it. It's easier to sell another soulless revel in hand-tool-themed depravity than it is to risk taking a movie everybody would love, aiming it poorly and having nobody actually go see it to find out they love it. And if this is the case, they should be ashamed. This movie deserves the warm, sticky feel of your eyeballs upon it.

Yeah, I'm aware of Iron Man. I pointed out Midnight Meat Train because it's another R-Rated horror film that got screwed. It was also a joke. And I keep seeing "anthology" thrown around, but this isn't a true anthology film. It's not four divided stories with bookends, but overlapping stories that play with time, a la Pulp Fiction, Go, and Amores Perros.
Intentional lowering of the bar...

Oct 14th, 2008

...Ever feel like there is a conscious, concerted effort to get everyone used to remakes and sequels and lowbrow-concept garbage, also sequelized to infinity? Ever feel like the bar is being intentionally lowered, to minimize overhead and avoid struggles with "pesky" creative types? That the Hollywood money machine just keeps getting more and more efficient? Ever feel like a worthy movie is not being so much neglected as suppressed? And not for some Entourage-inspired party-blowjob-scenario reason either. No petty personal revenge...more...long-term planning. Ever feel like movies such as Beverly Hills Chihuahua or the SAW series are more of a socio-anthropological experiment than just bad ideas turned into movies? Market research? Does any other explanation for the Trick R Treatment of a long-finished, reportedly excellent AND "lucrative" movie make more sense than this one? Or should I be wearing a tinfoil hat?

Simple research will show you movies, even with the factor of inflation, are costlier now than they ever have been. This bizarre belief that the modern films are somehow "dumber" than movies of yore ignores the massive popularity of Smokey and the fuckin Bandit as well as the - what was it - 6? 7? Ernest goes to ___ movies. Dumbness in movies goes back as far as they go - the only thing is the bad movies of "back-in-the-day" slowly fade away until all you are left with is are the best and brightest. The argument of "movies as thrillride" goes all the way back to Jaws and Star Wars - gonna blame them? Hell - Id argue its been around ever since Cecil B DemIlle came up with the idea "bigger is better" in the late !910s. And I'll take the original Saw over 98% of "classic" horror movies - the "man in mask killing teenagers" was a fucking cliche by 1974.

Sorry, just because you want to be called "James" now doesn't mean you're a better actor. I'll still remember him as the idiot from "Boogie's Diner", which also had Zack Ward. Anyhoo, I remember seeing the trailer and that whole Brian Cox plotline looked disturbing. As in, TV censors would allow that weird stuff that would scare children, but something as mundane as a navel or a married couple in a double bed was a no-no. I am disappointed, as I really wanted to see the story with Anna Paquin and the Vampires...although I could just catch something like that on HBO now.

Trick 'r Treat was a fucking fantastic movie... but I think it's pretty clear why Warner has been so skittish about releasing this. They kill a whole lot of little kids. Not just teens. Kids. Naughty kids, mostly - but I'm sure that breaks some kind of unspoken Hollywood taboo nonetheless. During the Q&A after the show, Dougherty admitted that he thought this was also probably the reason it hasn't been released. He confided that the studio was pushing hard for him to turn it into a typical teens-get-picked-off-one-by-on e flick the entire time. I'm really, really fucking glad he didn't give in... except that noone else may ever get the chance to see this now.

As succinctly as possible - Trick 'r Treat feels like the kind of movie Stephen Kind might have made 25 years ago... if he had Tim Burton's artistic sensibilities and fascination with the morbid. It's like a hard-R Goonies-meets-Corpse Bride-meets-Poltergeist-meets- Amazing Stories-meets Scream. That's about as good as my description is going to get, because it's not scary-horror so much as fun-horror... if that makes sense.

And venturing into mild spoiler territory (stop reading now if you don't want any spoilers... not that you have a chance of seeing this ever), Trick 'r Treat has one of the most badass Werewolf transformation sequences of all time - second only to An American Werewolf in London. Really, though, all four of the anthology stories were fantastic... and the 100+ minute run time literally felt like 20 minutes (I can't even think of the last time I was so entertained that I lost track of time like that). If Warner manages to ever fucking grow a pair and release the film, I think they might find they have an amazing new franchise on their hands.

Here's a few other things we picked up at my screening: The kid with the sack-head is named Sam (Dougherty said there wasn't really a reason for this and Sam doesn't have a backstory - he felt that too much exposition makes for shitty horror). Currently, there are no plans to release the movie in any format anywhere at any time. There are no DVD or theatrical plans. Dougherty worried that, worst case scenario, it might become an annual underground film festival hit. There's also apparently a ton of merchandising deals that are now rotting on the vine on account of there now being merchandise but no movie (like the coffee table art book and the Sideshow Collectibles Sam figure... both of which were given away to lucky attendees at my screening). Had we seen a proper release, I don't doubt that Sam would have become just as much a horror icon as Freddy or Jason. Also, the Screamfest screening was the first time any of the cast had seen it on the big screen (now that's just sad). Oh, and Sam is played by a canadian kid that is literally like 3 feet tall.

Anyway, yes. The movie is fucking amazing and the fact that it's not getting released is a crime against anyone that loves movies. Doubly so when you consider the torture-porn anti-horror bullshit we're being fed these days. Oh, and "Daddy, I just need help with the eyes." *cringe*

Whoever is holding back this movie, for whatever reason...I want their head on a fucking stick. A goddamn moron could make this movie turn a profit....fucking shit like Quarantine made 15 mill in ONE WEEKEND. Pussies at WB catering to teeny-boppers. Think back to the extreme horror that was released on a ROUTINE BASIS back in the early 80's....garbage, but extremely graphic. Now we have a movie that *might* offend a handful, so it doesn't get released. This whole situation is extremely obnoxious. :P
Would love to see this.

It's all new. It feels like a modern Creepshow cut up Pulp Fiction style. Everything looks and smells of that wonderful holiday in this film. The laughs are genuine and not cheesey. And a new face in horror is born...Sam, and he's wonderful. A very well made character that you will only want to be seeing much more of after this. Thaks to mister spoiler above, yeah they kill kids. But so what. Isn't that when you become truly scared, when you see the director is not holding back or sticking to a safe formula. Which is frankly all these PG-13 horror movies from Hollywood are about, safe predictable formulas. As much as I'd like to, I won't go into details because you need to see this if you want something new but also surprisingly familiar in a horror movie. This movie is solid right down to the score. I wish it would release sooner than later, but it will be worth the wait... trust me.
Killing kids? The precedent has already been set.

And Halloween III kicked all kinds of ass, and I'll defend that flick until I die. It just should have been called "Season of the Witch." The music and cinematography are fantastic and the plot is so fucked that you can't help but love it. Which means this movie HAS to be good, if it has at least something in common.

Dougherty cited about a dozen precedents for killing kids right off the top of his head, but there's no accounting for studio stupidity. Just look at how Lionsgate is treating Repo! The Genetic Opera. In showbiz there's no fucking justice at all.

Is that rag still in existence? It functions only as press release, it's circulation consistently dwindles. At any rate, I've been awaiting the debut of TRICK R TREAT for more than one year. I thought the film was a shoo-in for this month. It's only competition would have been another SAW snoozefest! Jesus, it was produced on only a fraction of SPEED RACER's megabudget and would certainly draw $$$ (the HOUSE ON HAUNTED HILL remake, negative reviews notwithstanding, minted serious revenue as a result of its Halloween engagement. It's not a good film but, for some nebulous reason, I'm hooked on that B-movie. One helluva cast, too). Bottom line: if a turd like BOOGEYMAN can somehow escape (and that gobbler actually made a big profit), why can't TRICK R TREAT find some visibility?

First off, you don't come across as actually having seen the movie as you spend most of your time comparing it to a movie that it's not comparable to. Second, I wouldn't argue the movie is genius, but if you've seen it, it's virtually undeniable the movie would be profitable. It's finished. There is no need for a re-shoot. Anna Paquin's profile is arguably at an all time high because of True Blood. There's really no reason for the thing to not see the light of day. Unless of course you can specifically give reasons why the movie you apparently saw wasn't that great or even good.
I want to see this now!

I have the book and it was awesome! The look of the film captures the feel of halloween. And a BIG PLUS FOR ACTUALLY HAVING KIDS PLAY KIDS in the film! I'm tired of twenty somethings always playing teenagers in films! At least this film actually got real teenagers to play teens! Japan t.v. shows gets real teens to play teens all the time. How come Americans always hire 20 somethings? Oh well......
