Downey Jr. looks like Oliver! all grown up, and Jude Law might be uttering "I'm your huckleberry." I always liked the weird casting of "The 7% Solution," featuring Nicol Williamson as Holmes (he'd later play Merlin in Excalibur, and bears an uncanny resemblance to Kevin McKidd), Robert Duvall (!) as Watson, and Alan Arkin as Sigmund Freud, who tries to cure Holmes of his cocaine addiction.

As much as I enjoy Robert Downey Jr. in all his movies, I just can't see him as Sherlock Holmes. In these pix, Jude Law looks more fitting as Holmes than Downey. I am sure this is going to be a fun movie, and that I will enjoy it. But the characters have always been portrayed as Holmes being tall and impressive looking and Watson being short and rotund.

Law actually makes a good Watson
by chaplinatemyshoe
Oct 13th, 2008

Holmes is theatrical. Watson is quiet and contemplative, something Law does fairly well. The idea that Law could ever hold a candle to Downey as a Holmes type comes off as completely ignorant of the novels or the strengths of the actors.
Nobody EVER gets Watson right.
by ZeroCorpse
Oct 13th, 2008
12:21:26 PM
Watson of the early stories is supposed to be sort of ruddy-colored ("brown as a nut" was the author's description), and look a bit beat-up ("as thin as a lath"), because of his military service, illness, and injury in Afghanistan.

This looks fine for a later (middle years) Watson, but not as an early years (first meeting Holmes) version. In later years, he was supposed to have gotten a bit thick.

Of course, everything I read about this project says it's a "re-invention" of Holmes, which means all canon and lore is off the table in favor of whatever the author/director want. I haven't read the book this is based on (also a "re-invention" of Holmes) but I think it's madness to fuck with a character as iconic as Sherlock Holmes. It's been tried before, and the original always stands head & shoulders above the re-invented version.

Oh, and SpyGuy, you're wrong. Holmes was a bit bedraggled (he was a drug addict, and worked himself near to death), and in his prime Watson was a strapping, well-built, handsome man. I'd say they have it about right in terms of casting, although I'm surprised by Downey-- He's not exactly the Holmes archetype. He's not even British. The average Briton is going take issue with their most iconic character being portrayed by a Yank.

by ZeroCorpse

The movies kept casting a pudgy middle-aged man as John Watson, but the books make it clear he was a well-built, good-looking man who served as a field medic in Afghanistan. He didn't get rotund until the last of the books, when he had been married for a while and had aged quite a few years.

Hopefully Downey won't do a redux of The Singing Detective fiasco, but I'm hard pressed to think of many choices that would be better for a major studio movie. And at the least, Downey's acting style and past project choices have at least indicated he probably wishes he were British.

Are they going to make Holmes and Watson equals in this movie? Maybe that's what they are going for here. I really can't see Jude Law playing the dumb, bumbling sidekick convincingly. If they are equals, as far as their detective work, it could actually be pretty cool, although, it's not the definitive Sherlock Holmes and Watson as written by A.C. Doyle.

Downey Jr as Holmes
by Fitzcarraldo2
Oct 13th, 2008
02:17:20 PM
I don't mind Downey Jr being cast as Holmes, I don't mind what nationality he actually is as long as he seems British and Downey is an excellent actor and can do Brit as he showed in Chaplin. Actually Holmes is not meant to be typically British. He is strange, mercurial, brilliant, none of whcih were British traits in Victorian England. Watson represents the ideal Brit - not "clever" or intellectual like holmes but manly, brave, loyal and honourable.
Watson
by Fitzcarraldo2
Oct 13th, 2008
02:27:08 PM
I think it's fair to say that Watson was pretty fucked up when he first met Holmes. He had just left mediacal school and went out to India to join his regiment as a surgeon, got caught up in a battle, got shot and sawe his comrades hacked to pieces before his eyes. He then catches fever and is shipped home and discharged through ill-health. When we first meet him he is living on his tiny pension and looking for a flatmate to live within his means. He is weak and thin, in physical pain and probably traumatised by his experiences. All this when he is in his mid- or late twenties. Later on he regains physical and mental health and becomes a portly fellow in late middle age.

Holmes is British, very British. He even puts bullet holes in the wall of 221b Baker Street in the shape of VR, after the queen. Hey fucknuts, I'm the main character on fuckin' Deadwood. Do the arithmetic. Or are you one of them witless hoopleheads who hasn't actually seen the fuckin' broadcast but likes to run his mouth about it like a know it all cocksucker?

Republican? Not fuckin' likely. I'm just a businessman. And the only thing I hate more than a liar is a fuckin' politician.

The loopy fuckin' cunt stays in perfect character! Oddly enough, Swearengen's the first thought that jumped into my mind when I saw the Watson pics.

Though, I wish he'd just push his hairline back a bit. I mean, let it start at where the rest of it is. Don't hang onto that little bit in the front. It looks so silly sometimes, even though he's still got a terribly gorgeous face. I like his shirt. Very crisp. And Robert Downey Jr. is going to be... I can't even imagine what kind of a Sherlock Holmes he's going to be. Let this have a good story, please. That's all I hope for. Let it not be about style and what-not, but a good, solid mystery.

Where is Jason Statham? Isn't he supposed to be in every single Guy Ritchie movie? I thought it was a law of the universe.
