...how GREAT this news is for sci-fi lovers. i was having a pretty shitty night, and just the IDEA of Scott making this book into a movie has cheered me immensely. if Scott sticks to the "hard" science present in the book, then this could truly be a memorable film. i read this after seeing Star Wars as a kid, and i remember thinking how stupid it made the Star Wars universe feel. Haldeman handles things like space travel, laser weaponry, alien life, and military service (he's a Vietnam veteran) in a realistic way, that just make a lot of other sci-fi feel really dumb. i can't WAIT to see one of his battle suits with the "laser finger" come to life. i hope this doesn't get fucked up...

Richard and Ridley have been trying to make a deal on this for YEARS. Back when Ridley was Directing GI Jane, he would show the crew members storyboards he'd had prepared for the FOREVER WAR. I was supposed to write the script at that time, and when negotiations fell through, I ended up writing the script of the Sci-Fi channel mini-series which in a pre-Battlestar environ was seen as too "space battle-ish" for the channel that had done TAKEN, and shelved. I know that I speak for Richard Edlund when I say that it is fantastic that a deal has finally been struck. It may well be the Ultimate Sci-fi film directed by the ultimate Sci-FI director.

Man, I hope that's the first line in the movie. I've been tinkering with an adaptation for 13 years, seventeen drafts... I feel like I've already seen this as a movie. Huge cinematic potential. Going to be extremely interesting to see what they do about the Chronic, the monotonous trips to the collapsars, the unexpected seperation of main characters, which, cinematically, is fairly detrimental to the emotional throughline, and the somewhat hokey advent of Man, and how that affected the war's end -- to quote Mandella: "I wasn’t convinced, but I’d accept up was down if it meant the war was over." Can't wait to see what happens with this... though I'd always dreamed of a Cameron-helmed production.

And yet not very apt. Having a war during the social upheaval of the 60s is the entire point of The Forever War. The act of coming home and finding your country changed forever. Nowadays you get youtube videos of soldier killing animals. Sounds to me more like their going to combine it with elements of Starship Troopers. It's funny isn't it, that there's a genre of science fiction based around the philosophical effects of war with insectoids? Ender's Game being the third obvious example.

cause he let the studio run roughshod over kingdom of heaven and he let orlando bloom play the lead, he made hannibal a grotesque piece of shit that no one could enjoy, he somehow made american gangster less than the sum of its parts, he did that wine movie with russell crowe which was uniformly panned, and he just got his ass kicked by a chihuahua.

oh, and nottingham sounds stupid conceptually and russell crowe is over - no one gives a shit about him any more ever since he bullied a journalist and threw a phone at a hotel clerk. he's considered an arrogant bully.

In fact I was reading an interview with Scott in which he said he can crank the movies out these days cause he knows he's right on set and everyone else is wrong. well if that's what's been the problem lately, fuck it. blade runner was made under incredible duress and look at the results.

Scott is extremely busy still but, judging by recent output, he's significantly dropped his artistic standards.

The documentaries with the "Alien" DVD re-release show how hard Scott worked to turn a routine project into an outstanding movie. His brilliant story-boarding alone doubled the funding!

"Alien", its predecessor -"The Duellists" (still one of his best films), and "Blade Runner" (not the lame, dumbed down studio version) show what he was capable of when he was still artistically committed.

"Hannibal" was inexcusable. "Matchstick Men" was embarrassing. "Kingdom of Heaven" looked in places like a slavish copy of Peter Jackson.

The Scott/Crowe team is sadly inferior to Scorsese/De Niro or, for that matter, Spielberg/Hanks.

IMHO, Scott's true strengths are Cinematography and Set Design -he's a mediocre director of actors. He'll never be Pollack or Lumet so let's hope he gets back to what he's brilliant at - Astounding Visions on Screen.

...but the production value has rarely if ever been the problem. Editing out of his control and sometimes awful scripts have been the major issue imo. If he gets a good adaptation of this, I expect the movie to be excellent. But I think anyone who knows the process of large budget filmmaking knows how incredibly difficult it is for a great script to make it through into production without being fucked to bits by profit minded hacks.

As for Scott. He's VERY hit and miss. He ranges from great (Alien, Matchstick Men, Black Hawk Down) to ok (Gladiator, American Gangster) to shite (Legend, Thelma & Louise, GI Jane and Blade Runner. Yes, I said Blade Runner! Tried to watch it twice, theatrical and DC and its fucking awful. And how many versions of the same fucking film does he want to release? If you can't get it right the second time, you're not going to get it!). The theatrical version of Kindom of Heaven was terrible. I read that he regretted letting the studio trim it by almost an hour! What the fuck does he think is going to happen to a film if you trim almost a third of it? Anyway, watched the directors cut and its A LOT better. But the main problem with that film is Orlando Fucking Bloom. He CANNOT carry a film and the only thing he was good in was LOTR. As for this, I'm hoping it'll be great, but he should wait a few years because Avatar is going to come out and join the benchmark created by 2001 oh so long ago. Over and Out.

I realise many people masturbate incessantly over their love of Ridley's 'Do Androids...' (i pre-empted that in my post). But to me, great visuals does not mean a great movie. I was fucking bored because it was FUCKING BORING! I even gave it the benefit of the doubt and tried it again. The DC was still FUCKING BORING! Yes, i think Matchstick and BHD are great films. Matchstick, like House of Games and The Sting, is a great con artist film, and they are hard to pull off successfully. Just watch the shite Oceans films. But if you're trying to tell me that you believe Legend is not an embarrasing piece of shit, then you are not one to question anyone else's opinion. Not to mention Hannibal! Scott COMPLETELY fucked up a character thats IMPOSSIBLE to fuck up. Even Ratner couldn't completely fuck it up. Over and Out.

...I have decided that this book is unfilmable. there are too many sub plots, and the themes of "government-encouraged homosexuality, to control overpopulation" will never get past the studio intact. there are FAR too many things in this book that the executives will decide aren't necessary. for instance, the protagonist returns to Earth several times after tours of duty, and i know they will cut that down to one, in the interest of time. the problem, is that those multiple returns are crucial to show the way society's change has been amplified relative to his experience through time dilation. there's a lot of Relativity in this story, and i doubt (sadly) there are enough ticket buyers, with enough brains. in other words, the masses are too stupid to understand this story, and the suits know it. the movie will not get made, or it will bomb badly if it does. maybe that's a good thing.

But Legend being shit movie? Give me a fucking break. Its some of the best photography, make-up effects, set design in film fucking history. Only a brain dead ape would say Legend is a shit movie. This is incredibly exciting news! That is, for me, Mr. Nice Gaius' post that Scott has bowed out of cranking out his adaptation of that other "unfilmable" masterpiece: "Blood Meridian." But Todd Field!?! With all due respect, I'm not so sure that he's a better choice. I still think that they should just save it for John Hillcoat. "The Proposition" was pitch-perfect, and "The Road" will rule this year's Oscah's.

Unfortunately, I think John Hillcoat may have already inadvertantly made his BLOOD MERIDIAN with THE PROPOSITION. While it's a really good movie, there is so much borrowed from McCarthy's book in terms of tone and atmosphere, I really don't see how he could do it again.

I think Todd Field's involvement is a VERY interesting development. He may be able to get away with more of the book's central themes and infamous scenes than the now more commercial Ridley Scott. Let's hope he has got a good grasp of the material. Apparently, it's still slated for a 2009 release.

As for THE ROAD, I've been searching the web for any and all new updates. Since it opens next month, we should be seeing our first glimpse sometime soon. I anxiously await to see what Hillcoat's done with that one!

Wait. There are actually people who liked this movie? Tom Cruise was laughable, the story was tediously boring, and the only good thing about this horrible piece of crap was Tim Curry. All of my friends and I were stoked to see it in the theater, and all of us walked out thinking it was the worst move Scott ever made.

Huh? Wouldn't there be ten thousand books with that kind of "tone" and "atmosphere"? It sorta comes off like you're saying McCarthy has copyrighted a feeling. I'm not having a go at you, great post and all, but that was a bit weird dude.

And he HAS done that "tone" before (and therefore again), but I'm guessing you're not Australian, or typically American (wait, don't take offence yet) in that you've only seen the ones that got mainstream U.S. release and haven't sought out earlier ones, and haven't seen Ghosts of the Civil Dead, which he also worked with Cave on, which is similar in "tone and atmosphere". BTW, American audiences have also missed out on some of Russell Crowe, Eric Bana and Heath Ledger's best stuff (especially Crowe, who hasn't topped what he did back then). Like I say I'm not having a go at you MNG, just saying that unfortunately that's usually the way it goes - most here on AICN judge these directors and actors from the time they hit Hollywood to they point where they say "EVERYTHING in their career to date"... etc., meaning Hollywood. With rare exceptions. Chopper and maybe this being two of them - although Guy Pierce and most of the actors in The Proposition have long Hollywood track records...

But yeah, are they keeping The Road that quiet on purpose? It's not like your average geek will have even read it, so they're not going to have the knives out...

Cheers!

He's too cold, caluclating. Blood Meridian needs Alejandro Jodorowsky or Walter HIll.

BTW, American Gangster is nothing but a completely subpar two hour movie of The Wire with nowhere near the depth of character, theme, and authenticity or import.

One last thing about Crowe - Crowe has failed the essential leading man test. Women don't want to be with him any more, and men don't want to be him.

Alison Lohman and and Sam Rockwell put in strong performances, but they didn't have a chance.

Scott seemed unable or unwilling to exert any discipline over Nicholas Cage - who turned in his worst, scenery-chewing, twitching, eye-rolling, schtick since "Vampire's Kiss".

It's not as if Cage can't act - "Leaving Las Vegas" and "Bringing out the Dead" show what he can do in the hands of a strong actor's director.

Scott himself admitted that Matchstick Men was "just a quickie" but that's a sad excuse from a director with his ability.

Cheers to you, sir. Long time, no talkback!

As for your thoughts on Hillcoat, no worries. And for the most part, I agree with you. I honestly don't recall and doubt if I've ever seen any of Hillcoat's other movies aside from THE PROPOSITION. So, I can't really comment on his work beyond that. (I think the first film I ever saw with Crowe was ROMPER STOMPER...)

However, I am curious...have you ever read BLOOD MERIDIAN? (It's unique among McCarthy's work. Few books can match its tone or its depravity. As a novel, it's about as dense and bleak as it gets.) Because I definitely think Cave and Hillcoat read it before they set to work on THE PROPOSITION. Strangely enough, I discovered BLOOD MERIDIAN by reading reviews of THE PROPOSITION - it was so heavily referenced as an influence, that I decided to check out the book. And from what I understand, it's Hillcoat's familiarity with McCarthy that led him to doing THE ROAD.

As for the point I was trying to make earlier - it's not that Hillcoat couldn't do an adaption of BLOOD MERIDIAN, its that I think he has sort of already done it with THE PROPOSITION. In my opinion, it's VERY familiar territory.

Word on THE ROAD has been rather quiet...at least on this site. But there have been some recent newspaper articles with photos and CHUD has run an update every now and then. I've got a feeling that things will change though once the first trailer hits. The book was a monster hit and there will be a LOT of people interested in seeing it on the big screen no matter how depressing it may be!

is not calculating at all, or clinical, it is an orgy of all that is wrong in man. i don't think stanley kubrick himself could've done justice to blood meridian - it's far too biblical as opposed to intellectual. honestly it needs someone insane. the closest we'll ever get to blood meridian that has any proximity to the book is probably jordowsky's El Topo.

And seriously, Ridley Scott, you're fucking amazing, get your shit together. You're turning into the highbrow George Lucas.

Well, the story of BLOOD MERIDIAN could definitely be described as an "orgy of all that is wrong in man". And yes, it is very Biblical in scope and brutality. Everyone in the book (with the exception of the Judge and maybe the Kid) seems capable of nothing more than brute instinct.

However, the manner in which the story is told is another matter entirely. McCarthy's language (a mash-up of arcane, Biblical, and Faulkner/Melville-style flourishes) especially in terms of describing the violence is cold and matter-of-fact. I think it's this matter-of-fact telling that makes the impact of the violence so disturbing. It's like the idea of bloodlusting insanity told through an indifferent and callous voice.

I think if the film were "told" in an insane manner, it would border on FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS territory = total sensory overload and incoherence. And while some of that is essential to the story, it should never lose the matter-of-fact or indifferent perspective to the viscious horror taking place on the screen.

BLOOD MERIDIAN is not an easy property to adapt...but I think a cold and calculating director (i.e. Field) might have as good a chance at making something truly disturbing.

Thanks for mentioning EL TOPO. I'll check it out.

I'm so goddamn sick of Ridley Scott's earthbound movies. They fucking suck. 10 years ago I was screaming, "Enough! Get back into outer space where you belong, you shithead! No one wants to see your boring movies about earth!" Fuck that fat pig russel crowe and boring di caprio. Fuck leonardo's 'serious role' facial hair. Gladiator was fine but Scott was born to direct certain movie genres and 'realism' is not one of them! Jesus fucking Christ, thank god he's going back to sci-fi where he belongs. Iraq movies, gangster movies, russel crowe vacation travelogues...stop the madness!! Back to space with you...and stay there!!! (Or fantasy is fine too.) Goddamn it!!!

In its scope, it's truly impossible to film every single chapter exactly as it leaps from the pages. If Fields has it in him to pull this off, I have not seen it yet, but I'm hoping it's in there alright. If he does, Blood Meridian is going to be one hell of a movie.

What drturing is saying, I think, is that the clinical narrative does give way to several scenes of extreme surrealism, horror and madness (carnival in the night, whore's banquet, ending, etc...)

I think someone like Herzog would have gotten the humanity/depravity right, but he would have been reluctant to do it on the scale it demands.

As for Hillcoat, I think that, while The Proposition was certainly influenced by Blood Meridian, the stories, characters and locations are really quite different. The tone and pacing of the film does serve as a perfect template for how one might adapt Blood Meridian properly.

Again, whatever we get will have to be abbreviated, and who knows if anyone can really pull it off. I was hoping for a big-budget HBO miniseries directed by the Coen Brothers, but, this too, is madness.

You'll see that Moynahan is no longer attached, with Field writing the adaptation himself. The great Scott Rudin (No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, etc...) is producing. I sincerely wish them well and hope they have all the time and money that this project deserves.

Glad you took the post in the spirit it was intended. No I haven't read it (well I started to while in a bookstore, forgot the time, went onto other things and then walked out of the shop without it!!) I know what you're getting at though. I just thought that if he could do the 'familiar territory' first with Ghosts, then again with Proposition, maybe third time's a charm eh?

Yeah Crowe was great in Romper Stomper - and went straight from that to playing a gay guy in The Sum of Us. There's a stretch for ya. The great Jack Thompson was his Dad. He does have a temper though. Almost ran me over once in his fancy Porsche 4WD, too (I think the speed limit was like 20kph, too - not whatever he was doing). And I saw him blow seven bells out of a journo... still, shouldn't confuse the singer with the song I guess. Shared a dressing-room with Thompson too - he's cool. O.K. enough being a wanker for now...
