I love Dahl by the way. Kind of sad to see his career did'nt take off. Loved Rounders, Red Rock West, and You Kill me.

She provided this show with some sorely needed tits, ass & sex, cause apparently everyone else on the show has 'no nudity' clauses in their contracts.

I thought the first season was average with hints of greatness, but Dexter being the only really well written character. The second season drastically improved things, had a wonderful plot, and the supporting cast actually did improve. This season unfortunately seems to be a step back. Deb and everyone else besides Dexter have reverted to their one-note nature of season one. Deb's stuff in season two trying to deal with trust issues, and her relationship with the older guy were all great and we got to care for her. But as you guys have stated, she's just back to swearing. I loved the idea of Dexter killing someone he didn't want to, and this in fact turned out to be an actively GOOD person. I think that's wonderful material t o explore, but of course they had to negate this by making the guy in fact bad. All the same, the stuff that happened in episode 2 was good, and I am enjoying this season more, and I do remember that season 2 didn't really step up until it was a bit in. All I'm saying is this show is capable of greatness, and DExter himself is a good character, but the writers really need to trim the supporting cast, or at least make them less of stereotypes. I feel people are giving this show a break just because it's high concept and a cool idea with lots of killing.

True Blood, Dexter, Battlestar Galactica...what are the odds someone can get him to direct an Aqua Teen episode?

Did Dexter actually start to have a decent story with characters you cared about outside of Dexter and Deb?

Besides Deb and Dexter, who else is there? La Guerta is doing the exact same thing she did last year with pursuing some love interest that nobody at all cares about, but at least her blind hatred towards Deb is gone; Angel is pretty superfluous even though we HAVE seen instances of him. We see him struggling through divorce, and his child, and now he gains a promotion, but I honestly don't care at all. On something like "The Wire" when people get promoted, it was done at a point where you not only cared, but knew the character deserved it. What has Angel done at all to imply he is very capable at his job? I suppose Rita is complicated and complex and had reasonable material to deal with, but one character being fleshed out doesn't justify the rest. Last season Lila and the guy Carradine played were both immensely interesting and not one-note at all, but of course they are gone now. Smitt's character seems like he'll follow the same suit, but I would be highly surprised if he sticks around to season 4, if he even makes it through the rest of the season. Again, I do enjoy this show, and I think some of the plotting and decisions in season 2 were some of the best I've seen in a show, but when you have a very large supporting cast that is treated negligently and haphazardly, obviously there will be issues. I just wished they'd resolve these. I'm pretty positive nobody watches this show for any character BESIDES Dexter. I mean, on something like Mad Men, Lost, BSG, there are obvious main characters, but it's more than plausible that you'll have people tuning in because they like Pete or Betty/Ben or Sayid/Six or Baltar the most. They need to fix this problem, because it inevitably stifles creativity. They're stuck always doing "Dexter" episodes, because they know no one is going to give a fuck if they do an "Angel" or "La Guerta" episode.

Carradine WAS good last season, I'll give you that, but he was underused... the promise of Dexter/him showdown never happened. Hopefully with a writer of Six Feet Under on here they'll start getting into more quirk and meaning. Disagree about Rita being fleshed out... has she ever been shown as anything more than just a really good mom? Give the woman some personality and maybe a hobby or two already. Hell, have ol' Darla make a joke once a season.

Ya, the [REC] remake was surprisingly good, I thought. It starts a lil slow, but builds up to an "oh fuck! they're all fucked!!!" vibe pretty fast.

I only really know if it was good by the end of the season. The individual episodes are fine, but it's the overall story-arc that does it for me. First season was great fun, season season was enjoyably uncomfortable, so here's hoping the story they've introduced now keeps building like the last couple.

Since Season One followed the first Dexter novel (Darkly Dreaming Dexter) pretty closely as far as the characters go, Jennifer Carpenter is only playing what's on the page. Deborah is introduced in the book as someone who uses a tough demeanor to cover her awkwardness - no wonder the cursing doesn't come off as 'sincere'.

and i hope it goes on for a while. i wish they wouldn't have killed off brian in S1, and though i use to wish they would follow the books, i realized it's like getting more volumes of dearly devoted dexter. for me, its a toss up between dex, lost, & friday night lights - for my fav current show. lost barely edges em out, but they're all legit. btw, i had no idea the 2 were dating, but i think its pretty cool. she is remarkably hot, and i think we've only seen the surface of her talents. i hope when the show gracefully winds down, they both succesfully transition to motion pictures. though if the relationship doesn't work out, will they have to off deb?!

I agree!!! Season 3 is so damn good, can't wait to see where it's going. Also, I'm not gonna watch Heroes, I think I'm done with that show now.
This show is so shockingly consistent.

Every season has been great. It tends to get a bit implausible towards the end of a season but I can handle that. The only bad element of Season 1, the flashbacks, have been removed. And with Doakes now dead all the actors are good. I love it. Every other show that has returned recently has been awful.

I just watched it and man this was a terrific episode. Anybody else see sparks flying between Deb and Andre? He's got to be an undercover cop or something, because Deb hasn't fucked anybody yet, and that bald headed detective boy is way too boring for her.
Dexter's 3 for 3

How about the fact that Dexter is 3 for 3 in the non-killers department this season? The first one was an accident, and the second one a mistake, but tonight he made the decision. I'm not shedding a tear for Cheerios guy, but you kinda have to feel bad for poor dumbass little Freebo. May be part of becoming a master means Dexter's figuring out where his own limits are, or he is beginning to spiral out of control. I like this season a lot so far. It's different - again.

it will be a huge and possibly unforgiveable coincidence if the "patch" killer turns out to be the third brother (the sheriff).

I agree 100% with what you say about looking at it as "getting more." I'm a MUCH bigger fan of the TV show than I am of the books, but I see them as being separate, in the same way that something like Legends of the Dark Knight is separate from Detective Comics.
First Season Still the Best

I loved second season and third season is starting off interesting but nothing beat the Ice Truck Killer mystery. I'm a sucker for mystery storylines and even though I knew who the Ice Truck Killer was right when the character was introduced the ending was still shocking! That's one reason I was disappointed with season 2. I missed the mystery aspect of the show. =(

Dexter is bringing in quality recurring guest stars ala The Shield. A very strong move IMHO. Last year Carradine seemed to raise everyone's game.

Really?

I think Mike can do better. Deb really doesn't do it for me.

I mean good actress, no problem there.

But, Julie Benz is way hotter.

Lila, on the other hand, just scared me.
