he's too gruff, and too much of the everyman.

Sounds like a pretty good idea fot Hex though.

You could always get the guy wo remade 310 to Yuma to do it. He probably doesn't want to do something else in the same genre, and I know it's a bit of an obvious choice, but I'm pretty sure it would be good.

None. Give us the movies we want. Where's Wonder Woman? Where's Captain America? Where's the good stuff? If you want another Howard the Duck then go ahead and make this. Just don't be suprised when it's parked in the back of the discount rack at Wal-Mart right along side Catwoman, Elektra, The Phantom, The Shadow, Dick Tracy, Ghost Rider, and the Swamp Thing.

And the recent comic book is superb. It's about time studios started looking beyond superheroes for their comic book inspirations. If they don't diversify soon people are going to stop being interested in comic book movies. I just hope they bring the appropriate level of grit and dust to this film.

was a snoozefest. As far as Brolin playing Hex, he can't. As I mentioned in the Green Lantern thread he MUST play Hal Jordan. Think about it, not too old, not too young, he'll attract the Goonies geeks, and the girls who want to ogle him.

would have been great as Jonah. Thank Crom they didn't take the bait with that pic of Thomas "I'm a devoted comic book fan therefor I think that I should have been cast as a comic book hero" Jane. The guy's acting is pedestrian at best. And yes, I've seen his performance in The Mist. Brolin is definitely a better choice.

Have you seen STANDER? If you don't think Thomas Jane is good in that one then your standards might be too high. He's great in it and it's a real good and unique movie about bank robbery and apartheid. I'm not saying he should play this character whatever it is but I think you're unfairly dismissing his acting.

As for the Crank guys, I assume they have common sense and would not make a western in the unwatchably hyperactive moron style of CRANK. On the other hand I watched a little bit of them on "The Movieblog Podcast." Not like I expect the movieblog dude to get a good interview out of anybody, but they just sit around smiling smugly and making lame gay jokes. I think Crank might be the highest level of intelligence we'll ever see out of these frat boys.

The post was way up in the talkback, but I am so sick of people shitting on Dick Tracy. I just dont get it. Sure the Madonna lovefest is a bit much but who gives a shit. The art direction on that movie blows me away every time I see it. you know guys are blowing there loads over 300, Sin City etc. ,"Because they look like comics come to life." They arent terrible movies, but Warren Beatty brought a comic strip to life damn near 20 yrs ago without computers. It didnt shy away from what it was. There was no sense of irony or detachment. He wasnt ashamed of what he was making. He didnt try to make it "cool" or "realistic". He was true to matierial in a way few films are. Especially back then. I would think the fucking fanboys would hold it up as an example of what to strive toward. I know I do. And so concludes my off topic rant. Thank you for your time, and in conclusion . . . Dick Tracy was the shit!

I swear they did this episode where, someone (I can't remember) was telling this story about Jonah Hex, and they did this whole episode with scenes of Jonah peppered in. It climaxed with a battle on a zepplin type thing. Am I rembering that right? Or am I crazy. That is the only exposure I have had to the character (if it even was Jonah Hex) and its enough to make me pumped for a movie adaptation.
Yup.

Josh Brolin will not win the Oscar for "W"...
by Leafar the Lost
Oct 11th, 2008
09:23:33 AM
...as Best Actor, because Heath Ledger will win it for playing the Joker. There is no way in Hell that he will not win. I think there is a rule in Hollywood that if you do a great job in a movie, and you die, then the Oscar is automatically yours. Do I think he would do well as Jonah Hex. No, I don't think so. I wish he would have been cast as the Lone Ranger. I HATE Clooney. Ever since he phoned in his performance of Batman in the horrible "Batman & Robin", I have prayed ever night for his career to end. He should be doing dinner theatre in Orlando, and even that would be too good for him. Brolin is a good a good actor. He is not a great actor like Depp and Downey, but he is good enough. He just needs to stop drinking and smacking around his "wife" Diane Lane.

Not all comic book movies have to be supernatural
by Bat185
Oct 11th, 2008
11:27:07 AM
I'm all for a Jonah Hex movie, but I don't think they should do the zombie storyline right away. The first movie, or two, should introduce us to Jonah and other villians that he faced in his first run. One of my favorite comic book based movies is Road To Perdition with Tom Hanks. That movie didn't rely on special effects, monsters, superpowers, etc. The first movie should introduce Quentin and Jeb Turnbull. It should be a period piece set during the Civil War and should do the storyline where Jeb is murdered and Quentin vows vengence on Jonah because he holds Jonah responsible. In the second movie, Quentin can hire El Papagayo to try and take out Jonah. They can bring the zombies in for a third movie.
I agree that they should hold off on the supernatural stuff.

Of course they could imply that it exists in Jonah Hex's world. I don't mind the supernatural storylines, but I think this movie should try and distinguish itself from other comic book movies.

I think Heath Ledger would be in the supporting actor category. Also if that really is a Hollywood rule they must break it alot because I looked it up and Peter Finch won for NETWORK after he died, but that's it. So Brolin has a good shot, but let's not count out Viggo Mortensen in THE ROAD this year. (just hopin)
