I love seeing various filmmakers known for dramas or comedies take a stab (pun sort of intended )at the horror genre. And bleak horror movies always get my excitement level. Either way, I hope someone forks over the dough for Red State. Oh, and good interview, Quint. Smith seems like he'd be a blast to chat with.

Not too much information has been released regarding the story. Kevin Smith has said it involves a Fred Phelps inspired villain, who's really fucking scary. YouTube him. Anyway, it has to do with crazy religious fundamentalists.... I think.

I'm more interested in seeing Red State than Zack and Miri, mostly because we've had a pretty good year with comedies, but I can't think of a good horror movie (assuming Red State will be good) that's come out this year.

Kevin Needs to call up Tarentino, who has been willing to put his name on other stuff, and get funding. Either QT puts his name on it, and that attracts funding, or QT funds it himself if it will be a low-budget horror film for the indie circuit like he said. Kevin, I love your comedies, but I'm really curious about Red State. Make it happen.

Seeing a dick
by enderandrew
Oct 9th, 2008
05:51:26 PM
Does this seriously bother people? I see my dick all the time. I've seen plenty of naked dudes showering in gym, or in the Marine Corps, or whatever. If you watch porn, there is usually a naked guy involved as well. When you watch a couple sex, there is dick involved. I think there is some stupid juvenile expectation that men have to freak out about seeing dick. If he whips it out really quick, who cares?

He's a writer who stands around while Seth Rogen takes over the movie, casts all his pals in it. And any douche who works in comedy who can't remember Danny McBride's name... Foot Fist Way is better than all of Kevin Smith's work combined multiplied by his weight in pounds.

This is the first Seth Rogen movie I have no interest in seeing.

Could it be a sequel to Blue State so we can see Anna Paquin being stabbed. Honestly I used to think she was a good actress, but looking at her performances from The Piano, through the X-Men, right to True Blood now - she's always acting the same.

i agree...the way alot of dudes freak out about it is just silly and immature. im a heterosexual male and im comfortable with it...so seeing a dick dosen't bother me at all, its just another part of the male human body. ive showered at a gym with naked dudes in there, conversating and all...its not weird unless youve the mental capacity of a 7th grader.

08:08:10 PM
I think that he should just sink about a five hundred grand of his own money into it and make the film he wants to make. Christ, Chasing Amy only cost 250 k. He could do it on a shoe-string if he wanted to. I'd love to see someone like him re-embrace the indie spirit rather than just keep eeking by on safe films that pay you. Despite all of the crap it got, I think Jersey Girl was a great film, and a step in the right direction for Smith. So what if the persnicketty little ass-clowns didn't get it? A man can't live on Snoogans and Snootchie Bootchies alone. He's always been creative as hell. He could make a great film if he wanted to, and he'd have no one to answer to. Even if he didn't secure theatrical distribution for it after it was done, he could more than recoup his costs by selling it straight to DVD on his website. JUST DO IT KEVIN! You'll be happier for it if you aren't fettered by Hollywood and their shitty little criteria for what is or is not commercial. This is an important crossroads in your career, don't fuck it up. Imagine 20 years from now when people are talking about how you broke out of the box (even as funny, and entertaining as that box might be) and surprised everybody by doing something that was completely different and real. Imagine people seeing Red State and realizing that your films have always contained social issues, and it wasn't all dick and fart jokes. You've got a gift. Your dialogue is top notch, and your visual style is getting better with every film. RETURN TO THOSE INDEPENDENT ROOTS, AND SHOVE IT RIGHT IN ALL THE ARMCHAIR DIRECTORS FACES. You can do it. Your real fans have faith.

Red State

10:36:26 PM
The only other interview I've read where Smith talked about Red State he expressed the idea that Fred Phelps' right of free speech is even more awful and insidious than Phelps himself...ummmmm, does that mean the movie's going to be anti-first amendment? If so, I'm not particularly looking forward to it.

by expert_40
Oct 9th, 2008

... and the Danger Rangers???

Because although I have no clue what it would be about, it is the most awesome title ever, and for some reason, I think of a hero like Space Ghost and the Danger Rangers are the kids who follow him around.

Holy shit, Ranger Danger could have a space monkey!!!

Kevin, I know you read this shit because like me you're a bit of a self loather, but man, I hope what you're making is the Ranger Danger movie!

by V'Shael
Oct 10th, 2008

When the Lord of the Rings DVD came out, people world wide were willing to shell out cash to get an end name on the credits.

Does KS have a large enough fan base that his fans world wide could contribute to the Red State funding? I mean, he has a reputation for making relatively low budget movies. What sort of budget is he seeking anyway?

Is he on a Shez long?
by FILMFUNK
Oct 10th, 2008

Sounds like he's only interested in making movies for the $$$ when I thought he actually had a voice and whatever change of direction Red State is he should have the courage and put up a bit of his own dosh and make it for making movies sake and the viewers not critics and test audiences. I'd go and see a Smith Horror! or something bleaker than Batman! Hell movies are meant to do that!

And you are a director/Movie maker! still all the bullshit with the self depreciation!!!

Dogma Problem=The Budget was too small
by Samuel Fulmer
Oct 10th, 2008
09:49:24 AM
I always felt that Dogma could've actually benefited from a bigger budget. It had an epic story quality to it, but wasn't able to deliver due to the miniscule budget (10-15 million). I think (I know this is Smith's style to a degree) the overabundance of dialogue in Dogma would've been a little more bearable had there been more meat to the action/sfx scenes. It's probably a film that could've benefited from being shot now, as opposed to 1998. It's not bad, but definitly not all it could've been.

and put his money (which I'm sure he's got to have some after all the toys/comics/tie-ins he's sold) into Red State if he feels so strongly about it. I'm sure if he showed a studio that he had enough faith to put some of his own money into it, then maybe they'd go along for the ride.

Don't be gun shy. You seem to be trying to find a reason to avoid being labeled a failure or a one trick pony. Alot of people enjoy your writting styles and your movies in general so I say take the risk and make Red State or Ranger Danger or for God's Sake please have some input into the next Superman or Green Lantern movie. Give us something outside the box. If it sucks you can always take time off and then do a big come back, it happens all the time.
Quint's Headline
by GPolice
Oct 10th, 2008
11:05:53 AM
I knew the moment I ready Grunty and Klytus' posts regarding the headline (which I agreed with) that is was going to be justified by the "fat" defense. While I don't think Quint was being intentionally homophobic, that doesn't change the fact that the title conveys homophobia, as it obvious by several people's reactions. I mean, if Kevin Smith was an overweight woman, would the "gross" adjective really have been used? Come on!

bdc777.....Chasing Amy
by Quake II
Oct 10th, 2008
01:59:21 PM
(as you stated) was made on a 250,000 budget and offered up the best performances of any Smith movie to date. Amy is actually my favorite Kevin Smith film to date. I would PREFER Red State to be shot on a shoestring budget. Directors sometime do more with less because they have to. John Carpenter movies got progressively worse as the studios gave him more money (The Thing being the exception).
Chasing Amy
by enderandrew
Oct 10th, 2008
05:40:24 PM
Chasing Amy was his best story because of the honesty involved, and it is one of the only (if not the only) rom-com I've ever seen where they don't just patch things together to have a happy ending. That being said, Smith hasn't gotten any worse as a director. His films look progressively better visually, and I think he still gets decent performances out of his actors. Compare Ben's performance in Chasing Amy to pretty much any other film he has ever done.

by Duck of Death
Oct 10th, 2008
05:43:01 PM
Seriously, I think his podcast with Scott Mosier is the finest work he's produced in this decade. As for Red State, who even knows what the minimum budget could be for this film, when no one seems to know what it's about, other than being inspired by Fred Phelps. I'd rather see Smith's vision done right than have him hack it down just to meet someone's budgetary threshold for indie credibility. I guess my own armchair quarterback suggestion would be that he self-finance some test footage and shop that around, generate some interest. Assuming he's not already doing that.
Chasing Amy
by Duck of Death
Oct 10th, 2008
05:47:12 PM
I think the deal with Chasing Amy is that he had pretty much perfected his early style with that movie. He was exploring themes he'd been developing since Clerks, and as an artist he figured out whatever he was trying to work out, and hit the right balance of low comedy and drama. Since then, he's been trying to move on and develop as an artist, and necessarily his films are going to suffer for being less assured than the films he knows how to do.
