I thought this movie was great! It sort of reminded me of SLITHER although the effects weren't quite as good as that movie (the monster at the end looks terribly fake here).

However, it's goofy fun and would have been great in the 80's. I loved the hell out of it.

HATE. You can be such a pedantic douchebag sometimes. The Happening is not "awful" or "embarassing." That would be the majority of your reviews. The Happening is a not Shyamalan's best film but it's still scary and entertaining. Your pile-on mentality on this film to stroke your readers' inflated sense of self-righteousness is pathetic. Hell, you were saying the movie was shit before you even saw it so how can anyone respect your opinion. Jagoff. Give the movie a chance people. This one is more suited to watch alone at home without the opinions of people scared to like something they think they shouldn't.

Boy, we've never fallen for that before, have we?

It could be the best drinking game movie ever though. Take a shot when Wahlberg has a dumbfounded look on his face, or take a shot when Zooey Deschanel says something goofy, which is practically every line of her dialogue. You'll be passed out long before the conclusion.

Harry used the words 'incompetents behind every fly buzzing turd' to insult people who made bad parody movies. Fair enough. But in the same review, he misspelled the word 'hear' as 'here'. Does this not make Harry as 'incompetent' a reviewer as those making the parody movies? Just something to think about.

Anyway, I was in a "Sleeping Beauty" last year, and the Disney obsessed director had me as the bad fairy in Maleficent horns. And wings. And it was REALLY hard to move around in our small backstage area with both... On the plus side, people liked my performance...and the black and purple spangly dress with fishnets and boots was probably the cutest stage costume I ever wore. :)

Shouldn't that set be called WWII: A Filmed History From America's Perspective? I'm quite sure it'll be biased towards America's side of things and yet again give the impression that the United States won the war single handedly. It worries me that history is rewritten or warped to favour some some nations whilst the efforts and loss of life of others are mainly forgotten or ignored.

The 40gb bundles don't have the ability to play ps2 games at all. The closest thing on the markets is the MGS4 bundle. All 80gb bundles after that and all future iterations of the hardware will not have it. Check the playstation website, they got the list of versions that can play ps2 games. No one could be as incompetent as the cock jockeys of DISASTER MOVIE.

Harry mentioned the last 15 years of parodies, which is unfair, as '93 had some good ones: LOADED WEAPON 1, ROBIN HOOD: MEN IN TIGHTS, HOT SHOTS! PART DEUX and (the one I'd seriously place next to AIRPLANE! and early Brooks) FATAL INSTINCT.

Hah! Theaters used to play it at midnight screenings and usually they'd hand out xeroxed copies of a faux death certificate saying something along the lines of "I survived Faces of Death"...I think they also passed out "Faces of Death" yack-sacks. I remember thinking even at the time that half of the shit was fake but some of the news footage of people dying was not at all fake. The guy who's paracute didn't open and then is visibly struggling as he hits the ground and bounces up in the air...well...I guess it could be fake but it certainly looked real at the time! Of course, we were all wearing trench coats with bottle after bottle of beer stashed away in our pockets...smoking cigarettes in the theater and my one friend putting on an impromtu musical number (Bal lap lap la Gorta! Sung to Valens "La Bamba"...la gorta means "fat girl", etc).

Gotta love the corpse bounce tho...even if it's fake...it's totally awesome.

Throughout my college years and even into my adulthood as a film fan, I worked in various video stores. My last job was managing one of the best video stores in the country, Wild and Woolly Video in Louisville, for six years. We even had a FOD section that included all the pseudo-reality stuff like "Traces of Death" and "Disgusting Menus" and "Bum Fights," etc. Then one day I couldn't stand it anymore, morally or financially, and we sold off the entire section. You see, if you EVER came in our store and asked for something from that section chances are we HATED you. The ONLY people who ever asked for "Faces of Death" were knuckle draggers, mouth breathers, inbred rednecks or completely irresponsible assholes with one foot already in the grave. NO ONE, and I mean absolutely NO ONE who had to sign up for a membership to rent anything from that section EVER brought it back. Eighty percent of the time they gave us all false information (hell, they're likely either homeless or live with their parents and they certainly don't pay phone bills), and the other twenty percent just isn't responsible or motivated enough or return anything. So, basically, carrying those titles wasn't financially productive, as they had to be replaced every time they rented to another worthless meatsack. We couldn't keep the sales copies on the shelves or they would be stollen within two days of being put out. We all got so tired of hearing, "Y'all got that Faces of Death?" that as soon as the person said it, I wanted to have them taken out back and beaten to an inch of their lives. FOD is like catnip for the lowest forms of humanity.

Faces of Death, Watership Down
by Kurutteru Yatsu
Oct 7th, 2008
11:50:14 AM
When I was young and staying at my grandparents' over the summer, the kid who lived next door used to rent the FoD films from the local video store. They were good ol' boys in a good ol' boy kind of town, so the age thing wasn't an issue. I vividly remember Part 4 for some reason. Koreans eating a dog, a guy jumping off a roof and smacking into the ground, a woman falling off her waterskis then getting decapitated as the boat came back around. Of course now I've seen things a million times worse (thanks internet!), but back in the day that was some "OH SHI-" shit.

And Watership Down? That fucker was plain old nightmare fuel. "Rabbits with British accents ripping each other's throats out? Hmmm, I dunno...what's that? It's a cartoon? Game on then! Show it to seven year olds!" *shudder*

Marl Wahlberg was fine. He was intentionally funny. If anyone thought his humor was unintentional they're an idiot. But it was Deschanel terrible dialogue and line delivery that had me cringing. The movie was bad but I still enjoyed it. But I love Shymalan so I'm biased. But even I think, he's been going downhill since the Village. After the Village, I mean, because I loved that film.

by TiVo1138

12:32:05 PM
And that's the point. You judge a movie on its own merits and what it INTENDS to do. For example, you don't judge The Happening on the merits of The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable or Signs.

The Happening is meant to be like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Them, or The Blob. It's in the score, the characters (the hysterical Army private, the craaaazy old lady, etc), and the outlandish plot. It keeps it tied to current events a la The Thing, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, or Night of the Living Dead.

These are why I defend it so much, I guess. I feel there's a real love of cinema that goes into every aspect of it, and it's his most fun film.

M Night himself referenced The Exorcist as an influence. He thought he was delivering an Oh-My-God-I-Can't-Believe-What -I've-Just-Seen Horror film. And I didn't say THE HAPPENING was supposed to be like that, I said THE CHARACTERS were supposed to be like that, thus justifying the acting. You may not like that, sure. You may not like the silly premise, even though is the exact kinda extended Twiliogt Zone episode shit Shyamalan has pulled many times before... But the apocalypse of film? Hardly. I thought all the horror was pretty straight faced (the old lady crushing her head, the crash car, etc.). There was silly, sure (Marky Mark talking to the plants, for instance), but I thought it was "character silly", just like the kids in SIGNS. I don't know, man... I won't defend it that much cuz I didn't like it that much in the first place, but still... Not the shit everyone claims to be. I liked it better than SPEEDRACER, for instance, and that got several good reviews here on this site. Sometimes I don't get where the bile is coming from... well, to each his own, I guess.

...it was a visceral R-rated experience. He also said the same about The Godfather.

But he ALWAYS said that this was inspired by the 1956 Invasion of the Body Snatchers.

And skimn, the scene where Wahlberg is talking to a plant was a moment of HUMOR. The movie consistently made fun of itself, which is one of the reasons it works.

This reminds me of how everyone thought the scene in Unbreakable where Joseph pulls the gun on his dad produced "unintentional" laughs.

It was dry, and Marks odd Teacher voice was annoying at first, but overall it wasn't the Dropped Ball people make it out to be, and I hate Sixth Sense, Signs, The Village, and Lady in The Water. I'm a few fries short of a Shamalangadingdong hater. I think what people hated about the film was how small it felt. The movie could have been made with a very small budget and still manage to tell the same story. reminds me of Flash Modding.

I'm gonna rent this tonight to give it a second chance. Tivo, I know he referenced The Exorcist and The Godfather as R-rated visceral experiences. He wanted audiences to walk out kind of stunned, like "whoa, that was something". He even mentioned preview audiences having that expression.

I tend to believe the expression was "whoa, what the fuck was that".

There ARE scenes that are effectively staged like the construction workers and the passing of the cop's gun from victim to victim. And there were much worse major studio releases this past year. But to say the movie purposely makes fun of itself, but wants to taken seriously also (I'm sure M Night's pro-eco message is sincere), is trying to have it both ways. The script and performances are so bad in places it verges on the surreal. Again, I'll watch it again tonight and see if it has improved with age, so to speak.

And, alas, it peaks with its title. And perhaps its pre-kink.com suspicion that someone out there wants to see women having sex with machines. In this case, vacuum cleaners. I recall it being really slow, and even if for some reason you were into the femme/appliance matchup, there was little action to it, nor much nudity nor, uh, eroticism, nor was it even ha-ha funny, just sort of slow, a lot of stop-motion and lame. Also, genuinely amateurish.

Wait, that doesn't work.

Anyway, if you knew what hd (whether HD-DVD OR Blu-ray) was like on a decent system, you'd understand the disappointment every time something cool comes out - and isn't HD. You can't blame Harry for that. As for the supposed Sony-shilling, no... Blu-ray stuff comes from all sorts of different studios and manufacturers (fees are paid no differently to regular DVD). The idea that Sony are the evil overlords that suck up every bit of the profit is pretty ignorant. I think even HD-DVD fans would admit that it was pretty much the other way around as far as hardware at least (and so ironic that they became the Sony/Beta of the noughties). Tosh/MS were the only ones producing players, and subsidised them so damn much in the name of winning the war that it backfired on them because no other manufacturers wanted to produce stuff they were going to lose money on.

Anyway, if Harry shilled for anyone it was at the start of the war when MS/Tosh "sent the boys 'round" (HD-DVD evangelists) with all the free swag and Harry posted that infamous thread where he sang it's praises and stated incorrect info on the competition without bothering to check it's inaccuracy. That's internet journalism for ya! But like I say, don't blame the guy for loving HD content in general. It IS that much better! Having said that, DNR is the devil and must be defeated.

Slacker uprising does more for the cause then Fahrenheit 911. Ill be the first to agree that Micheal Moore manipulates his footage to serve his purpose, but I found Slacker Uprising much more enjoyable and powerful then 911. Maybe its just because i had low expectations for it after Sicko... either way I think anyone interested in the elections should check it out. People who support Bush wouldn't like it, and that's fair enough because the film is seemingly biased about which bush supporters it chooses to put on screen.

yep...it sucks. i walked into Blockbuster aiming to rent it on DVD and instead got "lucky" enough end up renting the Blu-Ray version...yay...now i get to see a highly detailed turd. anyway, the acting is HORRIBLE across the board...no-one escapes this movie unscathed when it comes to the performances (though John Leguizamo had me fooled a couple times), it sucks from every direction and every bit of dialogue (which is downright atrocious). i mean, how many times did someone say the word "happening"???...like every 5 minutes and when Mark Wahlberg said "whatever happening is happening because of" i nearly shot beer out of my nose. when someone mentioned this as a unintentional comedy...they were SO right, at first i tried to take it seriously...then i started looking at it as a dark comedy and started enjoying it...strangely. even moments meant to disgust were just too wacky to take seriously...like that old lady (whom is batshit crazy i might add...even WITHOUT the assistance of plant spunk) bashing her head into the wall and windows...what a fucking riot that was, too rediculous...too funny. honestly, rent this expecting a dark comedy, watch it with your friends...tear it to pieces and forget about it. someone mentioned making a drinking game out of this movie...like drink every time Mark Wahlberg has a dumb expression on his face...but i have a better one...drink every time the acting is bad...damn youd be SO hammered, youd need a spotter to bring you pitchers of beer left and right.

Uh Spud, Harry might love HD, but where exactly was he LOOKING DOWN on those who can't afford it? Sounds like you're the dog in the manger, mate.

Gil, Digital copy is a lame IMO marketing ploy where if you want to view the film on a NON high-def player or drive, or your iPod or a car/portable player etc. etc., they give you a standard def disc you can rip to iTunes or whatever. Although if you bought it in HD there's a good chance you'd RATHER watch it in HD. And if you bought the regular SD DVD you CAN play it in most of those devices (and ALL if you rip the thing). But they don't give you a choice with a version that includes it and one that doesn't, because then they couldn't charge you FIVE dollars extra. It's the same sorta ploy as HD-DVD "combo" disks.

I have seen this. We reviewed it for a movie review show we had in college...10 years ago. It was dated then. Basically this bum discovers this vacuum cleaner. A famous Stanley Kubrick parody ensues. Some awful claymation aliens did some stuff to the bum. The bum takes interest in the vacuum. The vacuum goes on a mad spree of rape. Yes, vacuum cleaners raping half dressed women! That's the movie. It's SUPER BAD, and not in the good Apatow sort of way. Worth a rent. You won't believe what you see. I have some VHS clips of the movie's few highlights, but no means of analog capture. I don't recall the original VHS cover, but what is depicted here can't be it. That creature is definitely not in the movie. This movie was VERY scarce on VHS. I'm actually delighted it is finally reaching DVD. It could not look better on blu-ray. I think it was shot on bad 16mm, and some of it may have been 8mm. Now only if someone would release Ninja Zombie. That movie isn't even on IMDB. That whole movie was Super 8 I think. I missed out on my chance of buying one of the few copies in existence from a North Vernon, IN video store that was going out of business. Has anyone else seen Ninja Zombie? A white guy gets killed by this guy with a spider on his face (another white guy), and comes back as a Ninja zombie. He's got green make-up ala Dawn of the Dead, and dresses more like a gay cowboy than a ninja. It has a classic scene where he rips of a guy's arm, but instead of baseball bat Toxic Avenger action, he does some martial artsy fighting with the arm, the coolest part of the movie.

I went ahead and checked out "The Happening" earlier today, and it's not that bad. From what I understand, Wal-Mart(?) and Target (or maybe some other store and not Wal-Mart) each have separate SEs of Speed Racer with different extras. Of course the Blu-Ray gets the most shit, but frankly they're all pretty sparse from what I hear. Trying to decide which to get, as each differs and I don't have a BluRay player. The film flopped so hard they don't get any really in-depth stuff. I hope someday the film will get the full recognition and DVD treatment it deserves. As for Forbidden Kingdom, the movie was silly timewasting nonsense which I only watched to see Michael Angarano shirtless.

DVDs being around for a while is a given...but you can bet Blu-Ray has at least a good 5 to 10 year life-span tacked on it. Building Blu-Ray into the Playstation 3 was a business move to push the format (and use the extra space for games)...and given the life-span of their consoles (and stand-alone Blu-Ray players being in the market) you can bet its not going anywhere any time soon. another thing, maybe you need to take a vacation to the "real world" because you can get a KILLER HDtv for WAY less than "a few thousand dollars"...i got a highly rated 50" Samsung 1080p TV for half of that, and i understand $1500 isn't "cheap" for alot of people but its WAY lower than that number you blindly threw out. money is a pain, i understand...but some that whine about money are MORONS, like these idiots that have half a dozen kids on a minimum wage job...i've no sympathy for douche bags that make things hard for themselves then feel they can justify bitching about it

Well, of course Harryhausen is a god, but blu ray means nothing to me at the moment. Peak oil: it's already happened--are you ready?

Harry, the Israelis are the good guys, the Palestinians have made themselves the bad guys. End of story. Which side are you on?!

I wish they would hurry up and lower the price of Blu Ray in the UK already. They try to charge something like £18 a disc, that's in the region of $35 if I am not mistaken. Sure they do some 3 for 2 offers, but not many and the selection is limited. It is still too expensive for me, I am greedy that way. What do you pay for a Blu Ray over in the U.S?
Superjim, it has absolutely NOTHING to do with Blu-ray.

Did you forget your DVDs were always also as expensive as fuck? I'm from Oz, and even I never bought DVDs from there, even from Amazon UK or other British online places.

Sad for an Aussie to say because sometimes we get the short end of the stick too, but at least we don't have to wait forever for movies to come out at the cinema and then have them be horrendously expensive on home video. You guys get fucked both ways!

Don't quote me but I think the Cinema thing is nowhere near as bad as it used to be. We get releases pretty much the same time (or at the same time) as the rest of the world. As for DVDs, yes they were expensive but not as bad as Blu-Ray. I believe, again don't quote me, they used to be between £10 and £12 for new new movie releases. As I never knew the prices in other countries, this didn't seem excessive to me. It has been a VERY long time since I bought a new release DVD, instead chosing to wait until they came down to £5-£7. What are the prices like in Oz? We get fucked from all angles with TV boxed sets though, that I know to be true.
Oz is weird dude

In general! Prices range from pretty good compared to the U.S. (that's my barometer for decent pricing and therefore where I get most of my stuff) to a bit bloody rich. TV season sets are weird though. Stuff like Deadwood or Six Feet Under could be had for 39 bucks a season even when they came out, while HBO were charging over a hundred U.S. for 6FU. Must be some strange regulatory thing that says they can't gouge us on some TV gear.

Of course it was awesome importing U.S. stuff while the Oz dollar was at 95 U.S. cents a coupla weeks ago. Not so much now it's at sixty fucking five. I know their economy is fucked up, but I don't know what WE did to be dragged down with 'em!

Usually we get movies either the same day (well actually 2 days before when it's a simultaneous worldwide release because of the international date line and our stuff opening on Thursdays,,,) or a couple of weeks later. But every now and then we get stuff delayed for months for no discernible reason. And obviously Buena Vista in Oz is peopled by fucknuts who don't WANT to make money, because the last few Pixar releases have been delayed for MONTHS. It's not a 2nd-run print thing either. We have school holidays a few weeks after these Pixar films open, but they MISS those and delay the film 'til the FOLLOWING term break. I think it started with Nemo, so they couldn't exactly plead risk or anything as that one was a licence to print money. Of course it's finally changing just in time for their next film - which actually WILL be sorta uncommercial. At least I won't have to ban myself from the interweb spoiler arseholes again...

seen Les Enfants Terribles?

Dreadful crap. Although, in fairness to Melville, he was forced to co-direct with Cocteau.

Bob Le Flambeur is not much better. Sentimental and wet.

However, something amazing happened to Melville in the 1960s - maybe it was his studio burning down - but he started making great movies: Le Samouri (a template for Scorsese, Woo, Mann) - featuring Alan Delon as the coolest hitman in cinematic history.

Then "Cercle Rouge" - the coolest crime caper movie ever - at that point - and a model for the "Ingenious Heist" movie. Steven Soderberg was an obvious student - see his "Ocean's" movies.

"The Army in the Shadows" (forget the French title - L'armee Ombres?) - a brilliant, scary movie about the French WWII Resistance - of which Melville was a member, as an Alsatian Jew. Boredom, terror, dread, doubt and intense moral dilemmas. Starring the great Lino Ventura

I think the last movie he made was "Un Flic"- starring Delon - maybe more style than substance in that one.

Fantastic to see Melville/Grumbach finally getting recognition.

Harry, please keep proselytizing for this guy - maybe the most underrated director (and most influential - amongst good directors) of the 1960s.

It was mostly an attempt at humor. I can appreciate multiple formats, and I'm sure I'll be on the Blu Ray bandwagon sooner or later. However, there is a certain grittiness to the old VHS in all its heat damaged glory that occasionally I genuinely get nostalgic for. Call me crazy. On another note I'm very happy that the MUNSTERS complete series is available in standard def.

Just watched the uncut version of the Plague Dogs for the first time in 25 years. Amazing. Why wasn't Martin Rosen constantly funded to carry on making these stone-cold classics of animation..? It's a mystery to me. WD kicks Disney into touch every time. Still, when it comes to nightmares, you've got to hand it to 'Dougal and the Blue Cat' for being the best animated 'childrens film' ever.

Can't wait to pick that up. Ive been wanting to get this for a long time. I have memories of watching it and it being so vastly different than any animation I had seen as a child. Which of course is because its not a just for kids type story.
