I'd call him a plant, but at least most plants are paid to see the movie... And if you saw that movie, and actually took your study time to "review" it, then you need to either stay in college for another decade, or leave right now, cause so far it hasn't done any good. Here's how to write a review. It's real simple. First watch the movie. Watch it with an open mind... acutally be in a mood to see a movie, but not so overly passioned-up you can't see it for what it is. Second, after wathing said movie write about what you liked, and didn't, and why. Show examples of where the filmmakers failed or succeeded. Write about how they accomplished either. That's one of Harry's good qualities as a reviewer. Mori and Quint too. And fucking shame on Beaks and Merrick for posting some of this shit. Just because it's a "review" of a movie doesn't mean it deserves to get on AICN. Have more standards when it comes to what you put up, let the bad illeterate, non reviews be put up in the talkbacks.

I'm not spending any money on this until I get a reliable review. DiCaprio has thoroughly impressed me in his last few movies - Blood Diamond topping Departed, IMO - but American Gangster, while a good movie, was at best a Netflixer for me. So before I spend good money in the theater I'd like Beaks' opinion. I just hope the movie lives up to this particular review.

not a BIG fan of his but he certainly improves movie after movie. i enjoyed him in Gangs of New York, The Departed, and Blood Diamond...and Body of Lies looks to further that trend of him doing more ballsy roles instead of that tripe that made him "heart throb"-famous instead of "talented"-famous, what a 180 he's done.

lets not forget Whats Eating Gilbert Grape? He took the possibly cliched role of mentally challenged brother, and made it his own.

This has the same problem of dynamics that Gangster had. Take Crowe and team him with an actor to go toe-to-toe with, but then physically seperate them, so they share no scenes together. I think that was one of Gangsters weaknesses.

It's not going to happen. They have to go through the people who own the property first. They can write as many scripts as they want but it won't happen. The Eagle Eye screenwriter is a fuckin retard. And it took Scott a few years to convince the property owners to make Blade Runner. So its obvious the sequel won't get made.

I know what Ridley said, but he didn't write the source material. That would be Phillip K. Dick, and in that story Deckard is a human. No questions asked.

Ridley decided on his own Deckard was a rep, and he never communicated this to Harrison Ford (who has repeatedly disagreed with the whole Deckard=replicant discussion). He has stated that Ridley only spoke of this well after the release of the film.

Apart from the PKD story, to make Deckard a replicant would completely blow his character's arc. He goes from seeing the reps as machines early in the film to appreciating their 'humanity' at the end. If he was a rep the whole time, that would tend to make the ending less impactful.

And the whole unicorn thing- another Ridley creation.

I love the guy- all of his films- but he got this issue wrong.

...I agree with those who say it's a great film. I can't compare it to the theatrical cut, though, because I never saw it (after hearing about the butchering it received from Fox, I opted to wait over a year to see the full film). Sadly, I saw the theatrical cut of Gladiator and found it enormously overrated, but found myself really connecting with the "Extended Cut". Though talented, Scott is also a shrewd business man, and has no qualms about allowing his own work to be truncated to more manageable size for more theatrical showings per day. Ultimately, I think that makes him more of a studio suit (like Spielberg) than a genuine artist. It sucks, because he's also a powerful guy who could do a lot to change the way things are done in the movie biz.

Have all been good but not great. They all feel like they kind of blend into each other and are following this Ridley Scott formula that is always a good movie but just never blows you away. I think Leo is good as well, but I think he is trying too hard for that Oscar and sometimes goes a little bit far with his performances. He always comes up against someone who blows everyone away whenever he gets nominated as well. He should just let it flow and the Oscar will come eventually.

Leo De Crapio is lightweight. Can't blame the guy for wanting to play the primo roles he's been given and not been right for. He's mostly just been miscast in roles which require more depth than he's currently capable of. In most cases he hasn't look or feel right for the part and the cringe is intensified by the heavy weight talent he's playing along side. He just about pulled of 'titanic' and 'catch me if you can' . but i would be very surprised if he isn't melted off the screen by Russell Crowe who on the other hand has genuine depth. Also why the truth can is still open. 'The Departed' wasn't actually a very good movie. Don't mean to be a hater but in this case the truth just needed to be said.

I think the jury is in on DiCappio's talent. Certainly not the "greatest actor of our generation" but he's certainly proven himself capable of doing good to great work.

As fas as Blade Runner...Scott simply did the practically impossible and expanded on a brilliant but short original Phillip K. Dick story. The story is good, don't get me wrong, but Blade Runner is so much more than just a story. But to even hint at re-visiting that story in any form is practically blasphemy (or should be). Half of the article sounds like even those supposedly working on this realize it's blasphemy but then part of it speaks as if there's forward movement regardless. I think for the first time in TB history, at minimum of maybe 95% of tb'ers would agree that this is a absolutely horrible idea from any and every angle. And though I would never disparage simple disagreement, if you think a remake of Blade Runner is a good idea then you've got ass for brains.

It's about a 6.5 movie. There's some good ideas floating around, but the execution is pretty shoddy at points. Crowe isn't acting so much as he is hamming, to the point that it doesn't feel like he and Leo read the same script. And whenever Crowe looks over the rim of his glasses, take a shot. You'll be shitfaced in twenty minutes.

And didn't much like it. The reviewer was correct in saying Crowe's part is entirely inconsequential, but referencing the Bourne series is way off. Basically the whole movie is the Americans -- DiCaprio included -- fucking up royally. Honestly, the American characters do not do a single significant correct thing in the movie, no exaggeration. Given that, and that "terrorist" and "Iraq" are each spoken 100 or so times, I can't imagine this catching on very easily despite the starpower.

The problem with American Gangster was that Scott didn't have confidence in his ability to tell the Frank Lucas story on its own merits. Therefore, he relied upon a parallelism that wasn't very interesting.

You BLOT that shit!" I liked American Gangster, and Denzel Washington proved once again that he's one of the best actors working. Or retired or dead, for that matter. I'm excited to see Body of Lies, but I'm done with a Middle Eastern setting for thrillers, no matter how current the topic is. Enough dust, Arabic, and more dust.
Bladerunner was great DESPITE actually being kinda shit

Let's be honest. There were a LOT of problems with the film and no alternative cut is ever going to fix that. The sheer number of people Ridley pissed off - who then turned in sub-par work...

Ford's dodgy voiceover for starters, Vangelis didn't even bother finishing the score - and a proper soundtrack does not exist to this day...

So why is it still such a great movie? Like people've already pointed out - Art Direction.

Without the art direction, well there's not much left of Dick's original story after it got the Noir treatment anyway. Anything else? Acting? I don't think so. Editing? Dialogue? Art direction, art direction, art direction.

So... What? A sequel could never possibly hope to reach such dizzying heights of... art direction???

Give me a break! As long as Deckard's not a replicant, I'm there.
