i always thought the natural progression of titles would have been Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, Day of the Dead, Week of the Dead, Month of the Dead, Year of the Dead, Decade of the Dead, Century of the Dead..... i guess i was wrong. but isnt the natural follow up to Land of the Dead actually World of the Dead? Election Of The Dead
by Franklin T Marmoset
Oct 3rd, 2008
04:25:33 AM
It is about time zombies got into politics, so that is what I would like to see Romero handle next.

Romero can be a little heavy handed with his subtext, so this will likely be a film about a black zombie and his nondescript white zombie running mate taking on an old white zombie and his dim MILF zombie partner in crime. In the end, everyone dies or runs away to an island or both. Also, someone will have their guts eaten by, let's say, the dim MILF zombie.

In this one, the zombie Bub from Day Of The Dead returns, this time with his cute as a button zombie daughter, and they star together in an anodyne sitcom for children, with spin-off anodyne records and t-shirts and whatnot.

In the end, everyone dies or runs away to an island or both. Also, Mombie Zombie outrages the world by posing nude for FZM (For Zombie Magazine).

Is There Any Chance I Can Stop This Shit (Of The Dead)?
by Franklin T Marmoset

04:34:39 AM
In this one, former film maker George A Romero returns from the dead to demand the opportunity to direct a romantic comedy or a lesser action film, maybe something with Steven Seagal or Wesley Snipes in it.

In the end, everyone dies or runs away to an island or both. Also, Romero directs Out For The Dead, a zombie action vehicle starring zombie Steven Seagal.

“It’ll be about three weeks in (past the initial zombie outbreak) and it doesn’t start with the people in the mansion (at the end of Diary Of The Dead)," says Romero to Shlock Around The Clock. "It starts with the blonde who drove away and the national guardsmen who robbed the people. So those are the only characters that return."

Returning characters there. So - sequel. (Happy news for me, who love Diary. Sucky news for, y'know, everyone else.)

I love the first two dead films. Day wasn't bad but it wasn't on the same level either. Since then he's really lost it. Land of the Dead had a couple of great moments intercut by mostly poorly directed scenes and way too heavy handed social commentary (that's saying a lot for Romero). Maybe he should just give up on the whole dead thing.

come on mate, the actors were laughably bad, totally cardboard and the whole thing reeked of amateurish sci-fi tv movie shite.. but fuck it, i like battlefield earth so what the fuck would i know lol.. to me Romero is the first 5-10mins of Dawn, absolute fucking genius in setting up a world falling apart, the whole thing still sends a chill down my spine, every frame just oozes total and utter impending doom.. now why the fuck he cant get that back is beyond me, but these should be DTV and not theatrical, the Remake Dawn is the way to make a zombie movie, full on and to fuck with this social commentary bullshit that permeates his movies like a fucking 800lb pink gorilla.. i dont need a fucking commentary on scoial or political shit, i want a world thats on the brink, i want gangs preying on the weak, governments & countries in total collapse and i want fucking millions of zombies ripping the shit outa the survivors.. not a fucking in your face commentary about how we lead our lives, nope, Romero if your reading this, i love your first 3 movies and always will but like John Carpenter who made absolutely undeniable horror classics, its time to hang up the mantle and produce the movies, write the scripts or whatever but for the love of god, hand the director duties over to some newcomers

but it's a lot better than the crap known as Cloverfield. That one makes the acting in Diary look Oscar worthy. Diary's biggest flaw was taking the social/political subtext of the other films, and making it so blantent you can't call it subtext, but the text.

you have got to be kidding me.. id hand out Oscars to the cast of cloverfield before even acknowledging the fact that the "cast" in Diary were even actors let alone competent ones... but that's the problem with Romero apologists, they're like a cult, they cant see past the blatant awfulness of his recent movies based on the sheer brilliance of his early ones. Diary was a fucking abomination along with Land.. fucking smart zombies...and that shite at the end.. "they're just trying to find there place in the world just like us" or some bollocks.. i mean.. what the fuck!!!?? THEY'RE FUCKING ZOMBIES, relentless, unwavering, unthinking eating machines.. does my head in that those two movies where so shit...

I'm really glad he's back this quick on his next zombie flick and that it indeed isn't a sequel to DIARY. Although i didnt hate that film, i wasnt too keen on the small scope you had of things going on in that world, in NIGHT it was a different case. My appreciation for LAND did sky-rocket after it though, but hey, you gotta try something new once in a while. This concept for his new film reminds me of the original script of DAY OF THE DEAD where they travelled in a boat and there was a religious element to the zombies, that they were waiting for their souls to be let into heaven or something....keep 'em coming George!

Its a case of recognizing that the guy is pretty much the godfather of the zombie genre but what he needs to do is get out of the directors chair cause lets face it, he just doesn't cut the mustard these days. His last two films where straight to video nonsense and i'd be willing to bet a night night of sweaty monkey sex with girls aloud that his latest one will also be complete and utter shite. The guy is living off his past glories and thinks that his fans want more of the same shit, but this is 2008 and his heavy handed social commentary bullshit might've worked in the 70's but were all a heckuva lot smarter these days and don't need that shit in a zombie movie, we want as the poster above said.. total and utter fucking mayhem!
Actually, I like Battlefield Earth, too.

But what I liked about Diary was that it was a smaller, more intimate movie. The actors were not playing flamboyant macho stereotypes like they do in the bigger budget dead movies, they were trying to portray real people doing what real people would do in a crisis, try to get home to their loved ones. And it definitely was a better movie than Cloverfield because the shaky cam didn't make me barf. I'd say, next to Day and Night, Diary was my favorite Romero Zombie flick.
Like I said above Cloverfield
by Samuel Fulmer

Cloverfield=No logical sense why idiots are running around with cameras, first 25 minutes was like watching a bad MTV reality show, baby godzilla raptors rehashed from the '98 Godzilla crapfest, Character moments conjured up to make characters likeable/realatable fail miserably, acting is hammy but since it's shot to look real it comes off as even hammier. Diary of the Dead=Logical reason (though still a not quite believable) for filming, Movie starts with a bang and goes from there, characters are not likeable and not made to be likeable, Cool zombie deaths/horror moments...no rehashing from the cinema of Roland Emmerich, and acting is more low key. I'm not claiming that Diary of the Dead is the best film of the year, but definitly the best of the recent Blair Witch Rip-offs. As a whole I hate the found footage genre in general, and hope the fade ends soon.

short story in one of the zombie anthologies with this plot (the zombie plague on an Island)? Regardless, what the great thing in in my humble opinion, is that Romero generally presents a micro-cosm within his "dead" universe and then is free to layer in subcontext at will. I enjoy ALL the Romero zombie movies just for that reason. I would really love to see how Romero would do, say, a big budget the siege of NYC a la WWZ in the Diary of the Dead universe (ie the present)...

I know this is pretty much blasphemy on this site, but isn't there a pension we could create, either from voluntary donations or a chunck of ticket price and rental revenue, to put icons like this out to pasture when they're so obviously done? Land of the Done was shallow, boring and nonsensical. Diary of the Done made Land look like Godfather I and Citizen Kane rolled into one film. How is it possible to get actors to give such poor performances? Diary's acting was worse than the cheesiest novella and the childish "message" hammered on the audience like a Neil Young song, was embarrassing. The first two dead films worked so well because they were horror films with a subtle social commentary as a subtext. The next three blew because Romero seems to have made the films about the social commentary taking place in a horror film and, frankly, he is not talented enough as a director or writer to pull it off. Making a great horror film is hard. Some very fine directors have tried and stunk the joint up. (Mike Nichols's Wolf, both of the abortive Exorcist prequels)Romero was great, in the dead films and even outside of the zombie genre. But he now is part of the problem. I say, screw the wall street bailout; use the 700 billion for pensions for greats like Romero, and rock and rollers (rod Stewart, etc)!!!

it would overwhelm him and lead to the total death of the zombie genre, what i'd love to see is a larger zombie flick ala WWZ, but unfortunately the studios wont throw that kinda money on a genre that unfortunately is in decline no small thanks to Land & Diary's piss poor reviews and box office, but fuck me how cool would it be to see the opening shots of NewYork from I Am Legend then stick in thousands of zombies all over the camp, then add in the Army fighting them to reclaim the cities.. hey i can dream of seeing massive scale apocalyptic zombie shit on the big screen, at the minute the best zombie shit were getting is the Resident Evil series for fucks sakes with the occasional gem like the Dawn remake and anyone who doesnt like that flick, doesnt like zombie movies in my book cause that film hit every fucking nail on the head in how to make a zombie movie and i wish to fuck Zack came back and give us a proper Day of the Dead remake... now man that would be cool as fuck

All blacks should be canonized as saints (the usual condescension), all military appendages are evil, there's a government conspiracy of some sort; humanity, bad...zombies, good. God, do anything--maybe a tapdancing competition--to circumvent the deja vu routine.

I think that it would be fascinating if , not necessarily directing , but Romero producing a new zombie pic with the idea of going back and doing it during the very first night. The story would not involve any of the original characters, but take place on the same "Night of the living Dead" with other events and circumstances. They did some of the "Plague of the Living Dead" comics in this time frame, i.e. late 1960's and I would love to see something like that.

Dawn of the Dead 2004 > Land of the Dead

You bitches know this to be true. Romero lost his touch big time. Day of the Dead was his last good movie and that is mainly because the zombies looked awesome. But Land of the Dead was a contrived piece of garbage that everyone wet their undies for while trashing the far superior Dawn Remake. So what if it had running zombies? I'm the type of person who has seen so many horror films that it's impossible to scare me. So a well paced action film with running zombies and good acting was what the genre needed. And that's what Dawn 04 provided.
When "Island" Takes Place

Diary of the Dead technically was a prequel, not a reboot. All the Dead films take place in the same fictional universe and timeline, but have the characteristics of the era they were filmed in. Dawn took place weeks after Night but looked like '78. Day took place months after Dawn but looked like '85. Land took place years after Land but looked like '05. And Diary took place during Night but looked like '08 instead of '68. Diary was called a "reboot" by Romero in the sense that he was going back to his indie roots and the beginning of his series after making Land, which was a moderately big-budgeted Hollywood project that cost $16 million and made a $30 million profit. Given that the plot of "Island" involves people living on a remote island and debating whether the their zombified loved one can be saved, this seems to take place somewhere during or after Day and Land. I'm sure we'll see some intelligent zombies in the tradition of Bub and Big Daddy
DIARY Sucked, But It Was Better Than CLOVERFAIL

Seriously, DIARY was lame, but CLOVERFAIL was ridiculously bad; epicly awful.
This is kind of pathetic

Romero is like one of those one hit wonders on a VH1 "where are they now" special, constantly trying to jump-start his career by trading on nostalgia and ripping himself off in the vain hopes of a comeback.

I mean, seriously! Why doesn't Speilberg re-hire the guy? Val Kilmer has been selling his signature at British conventions. Tap into http://www.chillertheatre.com/ gt/gtc4.htm for a "has been" venue. Linda Hamilton??? Yikes! http://www.chillertheatre.com/ gt/gtc4.htm

That's the one where they milked the zombies for their special no-fat dead milk, right? The kind that Ben and Jerry uses?

really? Yeah? So 3 good films in a 40 year body of work makes you the master?
I dunno if I can even call him the master of the Zombie genre anymore, after Land and Diary...

Seriously, talk about a guy stuck in a self-cannibalizing cycle.

I met Romero, he's a great guy, but his best works are far behind him, and I'd like it if he'd just go out on a limb again and try some different film genres.

Martin wasn't great, but at least it showed some balls.

You have a screw lose, really there was nothing good about this film. I didn't think it could be worse than 'Zombie diaries' but it actually was. Beyond bad acting, awful 1 dimensional characters (and no I'm quite sure it wasn't done on purpose) that I had absolutely no sympathy for, and 'wry political observations' that would make a 9 year old blush with embarassment. And how many times does someone in a 'found video' film have to say 'do you film cos it doesn't seem real if it's on tv?' Straight out of Blair Witch. How could the man who made 'Dawn'make this? I cannot believe it's the same man. I wish he'd just say 'Look, sorry it was a terrible mistake' and either make one more great zombie movie or leave it alone. Plus all those saying that it seemed more intimate with the scale- I don't think so, there's plenty of intimate zombie movies... He needs to move on- The one movie that could revive the Zombie flick is an epic of World War Z proportions.

its to big in scope and apart from us zombie fans and general horror fans, it doesnt have the mass market apeal to warrant any sort of bug budget that would be required to make it even half decent, so for now zombie flicks will stay small scale and intimate, even adapt the walking dead, take the prison part and you could make a decent zomb flick with a small location with lots of room for scares and dark corners
Dawn Remake

I really like the Dawn remake. It's great. But it is not better than Land or Diary. Why? There is no eating of people. Sure we got some bite closeups of people being attacked but not full on cannibalism. Romero zombie films-- even they are 'bad'- they are good.

Then it went down hill in the second half since it brought in too many secondary characters when they should have been concentrating on the initial band of folks. The ending was horrible. They should have left it with the boat sailing out to nowhere to parallel the ending of the Original.

I can't believe he didn't get his license taken away after Diary. Can't his friends do an intervention or something?

"George, put the pen down. George, for the love of horror movies everywhere just put the pen down!"

Best line from Diary: "It's just like your stupid horror movie!" Indeed.
