Show me one iota of evidence for your point of view. There was nothing in Diary that even remotely echoed the (reprhensible) Loose Change, save, perhaps, the conceit that it was made by college students. Diary was echoing the Blair Witch/Cloverfield "found footage" genre (yes, I know Cloverfield was made after Diary) which Romero has become attracted to thanks to its low cost. If he was going after Loose Change, it would have been made as an "after the fact" documentary, assembling footage from numerous sources instead of 1 or 2 primary cameras. None of that, though, can hide the fact that Diary is drivel, and I say that having a very low threshold when it comes to getting pleasure from a horror film. The acting was atrocious, but the directing was terrible too. It failed to capture the "found footage" feel - every "kill" is in center frame. Characters have private converstations right in front of the camerz. There is no real sense that this is an unstaged event captured spontaneously, which is the entire point of this sub-genre.

Bullshit. For vampires you got DRACULA, FRANCIE FORD'S DRACULA '92, various versions of DRACULA, and JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES.

Then there's Romero's DEAD movies, about zombies I'm told. So, yeah, there are more vampire movies but most of them are about DRACULA and a lot of them suck.

Then I've seen a lot of shitty zombie movies. By a bunch of Italian hacks. Fuck zombies.

While I admire someone for recognizing their interests, acknowledging their limitations, and finding their niche, this guy has turned his niche into a rut, like, 20 years ago. What was the last movie Romero made that didn't involve flesh-eating dead people? Monkey Shines? What was that - 15? 20 years ago? George, try a romantic comedy or something! Get the taste of zombie out of your mouth!

The droning, overly-dramatic, and manipulative narration is a direct mockery of Loose Change. Romero himself has stated that he was aiming his satire at the theatrical YouTube/video blogger generation and not trying to make a hyper-real cinema verite movie. He captured that look so well that a lot of the angrier internet bloggers didn't realize that they were the butt of the joke.

Albeit only a helicopter shot. They had closed down University Avenue in Toronto, a 'grand' downtown boulevard, and were flying a helicopter low along the road filming what I assume was supposed to be a human-free city. They had stopped traffic for several blocks up and down the avenue, which is a pretty big deal but Toronto seems to bend over backwards for Hollywood.

I love Romero and I love zombie movies, but in a way I agree. I would love to see Romero make a romantic comedy or a buddy comedy. That would blow my mind. But I guess that would mean my head would explode, and that would be a bitch for the theatre staff to clean up.

I stated based on my persona taste. I never saw Day of the Dead, mildly enjoyed Dawn of the Dead and Night of the Living Dead is unwatchable for me. I still have yet to see Lucio Fulci's Zombie. I also was pretty fond of Return of the Living Dead but upon revisiting it I cannot say anything special about it. So, I'm unable to point out one great zombie flick. But vampires on the other hand, just saw Legosi's Dracula and Near Dark, two great vampries movies. I also have always loved Interview with a Vampire and can't wait to see Let the Right One in. I still need to see Coppola's Dracula and the Dracula with Christopher Lee. I still think zombies are cooler but there movies sure aren't better.

on myspace. I so wish Hollywood would make a sequel like that. The Squad has to fight against Freddy Jason Chucky and Michael Myers. Ash is enlisted from the local Towns S Mart. It's his damn book that brought the 80's slasherspack into our relm. The Squad opened up the protal he made when they sent Dracula and the monsters into the one they created with the Amulet. Fuck.... Hollywood make that movie man. Some fans did, and it's a beyond cool concept, but it would be even cooler if Fred Dekker said- Um, Yes! lets make this film. There has to be a way to get all of the studios to do this. Think of it this way studios! You will secure the branding power of these characters for another 20 years if you drop them off into such a film.

DAY OF THE DEAD is my favorite zombie movie. Completely unappreciated in its time. I also forgot to mention SHAUN OF THE DEAD, which I'm sure 90% of the world loves.

Coppola's DRACULA is one of my favorite movies. Again, doesn't get the attention it deserves. True, casting Keanu was a mistake. But it's just too much damn fun doing impressions of him, so I can't say that he hurts the film too much.

I have to see coppola's Dracula. been wanting to. It does have the great Gsry Oldman after all. I loved Shaun of the Dead but felt the film lost its way towards the end. As soon as they arrived at the Winchester in went downhill for me. I know the movie had to eventually get serious but it just didn't work as well for me. My old buddy from work loved Day of the Dead oto, it's his favorite so I'll definitely give that one a shot too.

Coppola's DRACULA is definitely style over substance, but done very well. All of the effects are done in-camera, using old school methods. Interesting stuff.

aka far superior methods. I know I heard all about Bubba. I'll check it out. I've been doing a horrorfest at my house since September 16th. I've just been watching all kinds of horror movies. I have a lo of movies on the list I've already seen but I'm getting the urge to watch new stuff. What I've seen this year has really made it fun. I saw the original Dracula, Frankenstein, Wolf Man, and Creature from the Black Lagoon for the first time. I saw Night of the Creeps (which was directed by the same Fred Dekker who did Monster Squad) and Near Dark which were great. It's been fun.

Fulci's "Zombie" is fucking awesome. Probably one of the creepiest films I've ever seen. Before watching it though, get yourself in the right mindset by pretending you're back in 1979 at a midnight screening at some dingy theatre somewhere. It's a fantastic movie with one of the craziest fucking scenes you will ever see in a Zombie movie or any other movie for that matter. ...all of the bad romero dead films from _day_ forward, that is. not a one of them is great. not _day_, not _land_, not the OK _diary_, neither. admittedly this is splitting hairs to an infinitely small width, but i am utterly mystified how any of you could profess love for _land_ and despise _diary_. yes, xander, i am looking at you. per the above, neither was great but damned if _diary_ didn't have more juice to drive the oh-so-effing labored zombie metaphor. plus the use of "real world" news footage made it feel like a more timely, trenchant film. i also concur with everyone who urges el jorge to hang up his "they're us" rotter booshit once and for all and make thrillers that OTHER PEOPLE WRITE!!! the problem with romero since _dawn_ has not been his direction -- hell, _bruiser_ is pretty well directed. the script, however...so, please, get rudy wurlitzer or richard price to write george a script and i bet he bats it the fook out the park. i further bet this is not a scenario we will ever see...kindly shoot me in the head before the next romero zombie flick. thanks in advance.

As a self-confessed HUGE fan of Romero's first three zombie movies, I simply don't understand why he is making these small scale reboots now. Surely the audience want a continuation? Surely it would be great to see an epic zombie movie that follows on from "Day of the Dead" or even "Land..."? Where the living dead have overrun the Earth?

I don't understand it George, why are you doing these small-scale reboot stories? They're just like any other idiot's straight-to-video zombie films. There's no need to re-boot it in a small 'slasher movie with teenagers getting killed' sort of formula. That's just totally undoing all the great work you did with the bleak epic world-scale horror of the first three films!

"Diary" was still better than most zombie films
by Ben Addiction

Let's face it - there are maybe a dozen actual good-to-great zombie films and the rest are complete trash. I wasn't crazy about "Land" but it was still worth watching. Despite Romero's inability to write dialogue or coax realistic performances from actors, he still has a good track record, and "Diary" was pretty good. Aside from a grandpa's attempts to understand the kids today and their wacky innernet blogs and texty phones, "Diary" was a decent, if modest, return to form. If anyone else had made it, it would have been more warmly received. There are Kubrick-style expectations on the guy, and we should be having Spike Lee-level expectations (occasionally great, sometimes only so-so, but at least he's putting ideas out there and trying, instead of obsessively holding out for a masterpiece).
