I find myself laughing. A lot. It's the dialogue. I have never seen a more shallowly written movie, at least not one that wasn't pornographic. So much of the narration and story is devoted to telling us just how badass the Spartans are; everything's about how they were born to fight, it's all they apparently do or know. It's a damn good thing it is an overly stylized fantasy, 'cause if you met any of the 300 douchebags in real life, you'd chew off your arm to get away from them at a party. All they'd talk about all night is how they were born to fight, they're the greatest warriors ever, how many people they've killed, yada, yada, yada. I guess that's the main critique of the movie, it's a non-stop, shallow, ultimately completely meaningless barrage of slow motion action sequences and ridiculously machismo dialogue. The "war/gay/homophobe porn" designation is correct at least in that 300 truly is about as close to porn as any major Hollywood movie ever made in terms of writing.

...the weaknesses of the movie are more evident when you watch it at home on TV. In fact, I think more aspiring filmmakers should study great movies (and not so great movies) on the least flashy TV possible, something like a ten year old 27 inch crt television. It reduces the crutch of visual impact of a movie and you can more easily study the story,editing, pacing and characterization.

Looks like someone beat me to the fact checking. Cost ~65Mil, Take ~$210Mil domestic, ~$465 Mil worldwide. Not bad. And a lot of hype at the time, so it was NOT just fanboys. 300 may not have been everyone's cup of tea, but overall it WAS well received and, although added it's stylized monsters and such, follows recorded history (for however much you can trust accounts) closer than people give it credit for. Most 'quotable' lines from that film were taken from Herodotus, for whatever that is worth.

As a filmed translation of Miller's 300 comic I absolutely LOVED the movie but I can see how people with no previous knowledge were put off - same with Sin City. It was thrilling as a reader to see stuff translated so faithfully and forcefully and much of what was exciting about those movies to me was seeing Miller's splashes and compositions on the big screen. I'm not saying that they can't use the style to create something new but it seems like an odd play that discounts some of what made 300 effective in the first place.

After reading through several talkbacks and such I thought I’d through in my 0.02. 300 was a fun time at the movies. I loved the adaptation of Miller’s story. After reading that Wiki you can’t say there isn’t enough to hang a motion picture on. Also, “Master and Commander” was an amazing piece of filmmaking, and as much as I wanted to like it, “Beowulf” was pretty awful and yes, Zack Snyder would make a jaw dropping Conan movie. Jaw dropping. And one more thing, I’ve grown tired of being an Alan Moore apologist – Snyder’s “Watchmen” will rock. Bottom line.
