Very true. Visually, Parker broke a lot of ground. I do, however, think it's a durable story. The tricky part will be finding someone who can imbue the thing with more than style. I mentioned Derrickson because he's got a solid handle on atmosphere, but he's not even close to Parker's level. Other suggestions?

I don't usually care for most remakes. But every now and then one justifies the idea. I know I'm in the minority, but Jackson's King Kong is my favorite version. The Christopher Lee Dracula easily trumps Luosi's. I could go on and on about remakes that I actually liked but I feel for the most part that there are so many scripts and novels that haven't been touched that I wish hollywood would cool it with the remakes. Who needs a friday the 13th remake, face it the first one was a shitty halloween ripoff. And tghey remade halloween, not well. But while I don't care for most remake, I don't understand gungans point. Why not rwooemalkes of 20 year old films. Would you rather see a remake of the matrix? Titanic. Minority report? Angel Heart is right up there on my list of favorite movies (there's something about the physical manifestation of Satan). The visuals and imagery, for instance, the fan stopping and then starting again, but spinning in the opposite direction, really stuck with me. It's a very well done film and I can't imagine anything new being better. Who could possibly make you forget Mickey and DeNiro? It's been quite awhile, but I did read the novel after seeing the film to try and get more insight into certain transactions between Cypher and Favorite. If I remember correctly, the movie was pretty faithful to the book with the main difference being that the book made it very clear early on who Johnny Favorite was. We didn't need an updated "The Hitcher" and we sure as hell don't need a new "Angel Heart."

I blame the celebrity media who spends way too much time concentrating on non-threatening soulless douche bag actors who care for nothing more than starring in the next big budget mess so their clout can quickly take them on the road to fleeting pointless fame. This site is no different either. Look Shia Labeouf may get a raw deal from some, but he's esteemed way to highly by many others. the kid is likeable in Transformers, nothing more. How that become a yardstick of the next big thing is totally unfathomable to me. He's, thus far, totally inconsequential as an acting force. The young actors we should be talking about are Ryan Gosling and Joseph Gordon Levitt (who had to be in a raped GI Joe to get noticed...ugh). Those are the only guys who can hang nowadays.

Unfair. Parker makes some excellent films. The first time I saw Angel Heart it created a bizarre and unnerving mood and was loaded with atmosphere and aesthetic. The twist was spoilt for me by a 'friend' who'd seen it already, but it was a dark noir film that doesn't need a remake. The book most certainly does NOT make it clear early on who Johnny Favorite is. Just like the film, it's structured as a Chandler-esque mystery, and the reveal is doled out at the climax in exactly the same manner. The primary difference between book and film is that in the novel Harry never goes to New Orleans but instead enters small Haitian enclave in New York. As for the remake, fuck this. ANGEL HEART is bar none my favorite Parker film (not half-full of shit at all) -- it's perfect the way it is and doesn't need to be remade. Twenty bucks says fucking De Luca decides to go with a modern-day setting. Fuck! Is nothing sacred?

It's only worth remaking a film when the original is - A - not very well done in the first place & a missed oppertunity. Angel heart doesn't fall in to this categoery, I am Legend does. B- so old that it is incredibly dated ( king kong) & most people have forgotten it (dam busters). An Angelheart remake will fail in the same way that the remakes of all those other 1980's horror films did. A pointless excercise. Spielberg's war of the worlds, deserves a remake because it feels rushed & largely ignores the, (very original), novel & instead mimics independance day.

FALLING ANGEL is a terrific, larger-than-life, endlessly entertaining and atmospheric book. Parker's film version, on the other hand, is drearily pretentious in an '80s spinning-fan-cutaways style (JACOB'S LADDER is another film sunk by that style). So I say, do the film faithfully. Hire Ridley Scott (he writes an intro to the latest edition of the book, after all). Get a good composer. Have some fun.

I'd put Parker in the top 5 directors of the last 30 years. I'd also say The Wall is one of the best films Ever. I remember the first time I saw it when it was shown to us during a local film-making class for kids during the school holidays - utterly inspiring. I still am amazed each time I see it nearly 30 years later that a) someone ponyed up the cash for such a bizarre concept, and b) it still looks and sounds so fucking good. The day that every friend and family member I care about bite it in some alarmingly contrieved attrocity I am going home and watching Bugsy Malone and Hudsucker Proxy, and then going to sleep with a shit-eating grin on my face. As for Angel Heart - I read the book just after seeing the film too - and I can see an argument for retelling a film version without leaving New York. Would be interesting to see how that affects the tone of the film. (Does anyone else still find themselves sometimes cupping their hands over their mouths and subconsciously singing "girl of my dreams I love you"? I do it 2-3 times a year without realising it)

Totally forgot about that. I reviewed the DVD, like, four years ago, so that little sliver of info escaped the ol' noggin'. (Obviously, I've never read the book.) And MISSISSIPPI BURNING is completely full of shit. Nothing like the FBI being painted as the heroes of the Civil Rights Movement. That movie trashes the historical record. It's garbage.

Buddy, by declaring Angel Heart is half-shit you made me lose faith in you as a film reviewer for as long as you are here. Man, that movie is a certified horror-classic, it's a one of a kind film that's worth seeing 100 times, it doesn't get better thriller-horror movie wise. And yes, another big vote here for Rose's Paperhouse, his best and most intriguing movie (Why are debut movies often the best in a Director's Career ?). A remake for Angel Heart ? Most useless movie attempting to re-do I've heard so far, I hope it's gonna bomb really hard and will run everyone involved with it out of the movie-business for life. Yes this news annoys me. There's no way a spanking new version could come close to the originality and brilliance of Parker's movie, that's just not gonna happen. Fuck it.

Other classic noir novels ("The Maltese Falcon" by Hammett and "Farewell, My Lovely" by Chandler) were made more than once into movies. In both cases, the second or third time was the better one. "Fallen Angel" was a favorite book of mine, because of the heavy chandleresque dialog and hero. And when I saw the movie, in 87, I was a little disappointed. Ok, the music was f***** awesome (I bought the Trevor Jones soundtrack in CD), the photography was haunting, the acting of the main cast (the detective and the client) pretty intense (in one scene with De Niro, Rourke was so nervous he was keeping an ice cube in his pocket). BUT, the book was better. The most shocking scene, the orgy and the fight in the subway, was cut from the movie. I was expecting NY, not New Orleans. The detective was supposed to be more city tough and less...charming and fragile like James Dean (it´s a praise, in a sense). Ok, the discovery of the final twist, the sex-bloodbath scene, the flashbacks with the creepy-as-hell fan, the elevator-to-hell scene at the very ending, all of them were superbly done by Parker. Alan Parker was the man, amen. But I will watch the re...oops, the new version, hehe. Time will tell.

It's been so long since I've seen the film that I barely remember anything about it, except for Mickey Rourkes performance. Brilliant. I'd say a remake of (virtually) anything is superfluous, but the comment itself is superfluous! The only need to remake ANYTHING is if it’s a great idea that didn’t work the first time. And only if you know how to improve it. Anything else is cashing in. All I seem to hear about are sequels and remakes! Elm Street, Bad Lieutenant, Poltergeist and now Angel Heart. What are they going to remake next? Godfather? Jaws? Back to the Future? C’mon!!!

They’re about two years two late for a remake, because the only actor (in that age bracket) I can think of that could've put in a performance like Rourkes was Brad Renfro. That kid had the goods. Damn shame.
