They "broke" the stories on Will Smith as Captain America and Depp and Hoffman as the Riddler and the Penguin (i guess they re-broke that second one). Yes, the fact that this comes from the mouth of the director lends the story a little more credibility, but MTV's "reporters" have certainly shown that they can't discern a joke from a statement of fact.

It's not both characters being played by crowe. It's using the conceit that Nottingham actually IS Robin Hood. I don't think in a multiple-personality way either - More a secret identity thing.

The state of the economy. Last time Ridley and Russel made a movie by themselves it was about older Britishy dudes sitting around Italy drinking wine and being rich. To begin with they're doing a robin hood movie in which the sherrif of nottingham is the hero and robin hood is the villain, which during a financial meltdown is beyond stupid. To take the single folk hero who represents stealing from the rich and giving to the poor out of injustice and make him a villain now is like making a movie about about the CEOs of Lehman Bros as action heros. And now to have Crowe play both, even stupider.

CHUD believes that it's not some Peter Sellers/Eddie Murphy type deal but a gimmick where the Sheriff himself is the guy putting on the mask and becoming Robin Hood. This quote fits with that theory but doesn't exactly make it clear what the deal is.

Anyway, let's all hope he wears a fat suit for one of the roles.

Sheriff becomes Hood
by supertoyslast
Sep 29th, 2008
11:55:58 AM
If the Sheriff and Hood are two separate characters, then having Crowe play both would be a terrible idea. Previous reports have suggested that the Sheriff is the good guy and Hood the bad guy. So I would love it if the Sheriff invented Hood as a bad guy to frighten the populace and keep himself in power. The 'Power of Nightmares' scenario. Or if the Sheriff killed Hood early on and then, realising he needed an opponent, took his place.

None of this would explain the Merry Men's role. I guess, by necessity, they would be in the Sheriff's employ and in on the plan.

Will he also play Maid Marriane?

I recently watched the Final Cut, and it made me realize that I've unconsciously always preferred the original theatrical version -- voice over and all. Mostly because I don't think the idea that Deckard is a replicant is as interesting as if he's not. That he's a human who grows to have compassion for -- even love for -- replicants has always struck me as more profound than if he were predisposed/programmed to be sympathetic. Anyone agree or disagree?

i prefer to think that deckard is in fact a replicant, but that he never discovers it and that it's a detail that's tangential to the story, as well as being completely unexplained. if you pick up on the clues and realize his true nature, then you've discovered an easter egg. but the point is that as far as he and the overall story is concerned, he's as human as any human in the film. i love this friggin movie. if holywood only produced two films ever, blade runner and unforgiven, i would be content.

I have a feeling they are combining the real-life history of Richard the Lionheart with the tale of Robin Hood. Because of the usual Robin Hood tales, most people believe that Prince John was the villain in history and all was set right when King Richard returned from the crusades. However, in reality, King Richard barely spoke english, only spent 6 months in England and forced his brother to raise taxes to fund the crusades. I have a feeling that the Sheriff will be sympathetic to the poor in this version, and will create the guise of Robin Hood to try and set things right in the Kingdom.

Whatever the gimmick or whatever you might call it, at least they are trying something different. Even if he's just messing with us and its a plot device where the Sheriff goes out as Robin Hood or something of the like, at least it sounds like something fairly unique. As much as I love Bale, he doesn't need another iconic role for himself. This news was cooler than I expected when I clicked the link, basically. I was sort figuring it would read Guy Pearce, etc.

At first I thought MTV just had it wrong, or were deliberately misleading us in order to create a "scoop": perhaps they asked Ridley Scott if Russell Crowe was playing "the bad guy," to which Scott would reply "He's playing both!" to illustrate that despite normally being the villain, in this revisionist take the Sheriff would be the protagonist. That's just one way the news could've been misinterpreted.

However, the CHUD article supports the duel role theory, and I'm beginning to believe it. It sounds like a lame idea. A sympathetic Crowe facing off against an asshole Sam Riley as Robin Hood would've been cool. Going one step beyond the revisionism to create some sort of duel-role mechanic is going one step too many.

I'd definitely take the idea that the sheriff creates Robin Hood as a kind of insurgency against the brutality of the crown over the single most beyond tired gimmick of multiple personality disorders.

Here's hoping that they've got an awesome, rock-solid script, and that Sir Ridley is suitably inspired and returns to form with this one. And, oh yes, that he also completely drops the idea of adapting Blood Meridian and instead FOCUSES on a choice slice of ORIGINAL science fiction.

A fresh take is needed.

I don't get why all you whiners previously saying 'FFS yet ANOTHER Robin Hood adaptation...' aren't jumping for joy at this news because it means Scott is gonna take on the Hood legend in an original way. Like with the BBC's new Merlin series (and, indeed, Robin Hood) these 'legends' can be adapted for screen in ANY number of different ways. There's no such thing as a 'faithful' vision to adhere to. My guess is that Robin WILL be played by a different actor in the first part of the movie but when he is killed Crowe's Sheriff will secretly take up the Hood mantle to preserve the balance. Subsequently he'll turn into a good guy through and through but when he's found out he'll be executed and that's how the movie will end.
