Wouldn't have put Experiment in terror on this list but good to see it. The Dunwich Horror was a film I always wanted to see and finally got around to it a couple of years ago. Was surprised at how good itg was. Just wish Lucas would buy the rights to it and cgi the effects at the end. Only problem I had with it was the shitty spfx. Am jealous that you have I saw what you did. Was looking to buy it not too long ago but they want a fortune.

Guten Tag Quint There is some delightful stuff on your list (and some pretty awful - I still curse myself for the ticket I paid to see "The Wraith" - dammit another 90 minutes lifetime down the drain) and I am really looking forward to read them. Yes, of course, there are some "huh, never seen?" items like THING and SALO on it but everyone has something in the closet like this. You should enjoy especially "Die, Monster die" and "Dunwich Horror" both HP Lovecraft adaptions, which doesnt really function as such but fuck me, Daniel Haller is one of the most unsungest moviemaker of all time. He had to work with chickenscratch as budgets and made visually masterpieces out of them. Which should suprise no one, as he was the set-desinger of most of Cormans Poe adaptions. ...you should try to find the Reincarnation of Peter Proud. It's not on dvd, but I found it on a bootleg. Audrey Rose is creepier, but I've always had a soft spot for PP. It kind of reminds me of the Dead Zone where you know things are not going to quite work out for the guy and just creats a feeling of dread.

I'm surprised you had the guts to put Salo on the list. That's probably going to be worse to watch than all the rest. Personally I went through the last 40 minutes on fast-forward. It's not so much a scary film as an unsettling one. I don't even consider it a very good film.. It's too graphic. And I'm not sure I understand the changes that was made from De Sade's book (although truth be told, I didn't understand that at all).

My impressions of both those movies have them as thrillers, about people being stalked by other people. Southern Comfort might fall more in with Deliverance than Friday the 13th, but it doesn't have to have a machete slicing a tit open to be horror. But then again I still get upset when people forget that Silence of the Lambs was a horror movie... seems like when a horror film is done well, with good actors and great script it suddenly becomes a "thriller" instead.

My dad took me to see this at a drive-in double feature along with The Omen. RWTD scared the crap outta me while the Omen creeped me out just a little. (I was 9 years old and was only scared at the night time grave scene with the attack dogs). Enjou Squirm... good effect that will make you, um, squirm. Quite gross at times.

lookslike a lot of fun. And if you're going with suspense abd horror you should check out The silent Partner. Saw it in a military theater when I was a big bad soldier ans Christopher Plummer's villain stayed with me all night. There are moments in that film that definitely approach horror.

If you have not seen it (and can find it) take a look at 'SEIZURE'. The first feature written and directed by Oliver Stone, which makes it more of a historic curiosity than an example of great horror cinema. It has any interesting premises (the blending of reality and fantasy, the artist as victim of his art) and a interesting cast. Mary Wovonov, Herve Villechaze, Christina Pickles, Troy Donahue, Martine Beswick (as the Quenn of Evil) and Jonathan Frid (as the writer the some major issues). At the time of it’s release in ’74 (well more of a escape, it was an obscure item even when it was new) I was a big ‘Dark Shadows’ fan the main draw for me was Frid’s involvement.. Does not live up to it’s promise, but does show the promise of things to come. At lest in hindsight.

Well, it certainly is horrifying, Quint, but I wouldn't consider it a horror flick, per se. Still, watch it, cause I can't wait to see your write up -- ooh, boy, you're in for a tough 90 minutes! And "Dead & Buried" is one of my favorite guilty pleasures on the list! Not a terrific movie, but there's something so demented about it, that it's held a place in the inky-blackness of my heart. But, conversely, every serial killer film isn't a horror. I wouldn't call Zodiac a horror - and that is a far closer match to this. The film is essentially about the impact of the case - South Korea's first serial killer - and mainly about the men who work it. Sounds like marketing have sexed it up into a different genre to sell it instead of hyping the fact it is a superb film and one of the first from the new South Korean cinema to break out to international attention. Much as I love Dr Phibes, and have long been a fan of The Thing From Another World, it is easily the best film on the list.

But at least you get to see Clint Howard in the Wraith! Skank and Gutterboy are lots of fun. The Hunger has lots of style but it is slow moving. Dunwich Horror had some moments. I never found Lovecraft to be that exciting (even if he did write a story with Houdini and was friends with Tolkien and Robert E. Howard). I have always found the interpretations of Lovecraft to be much better. He has inspired many people and I look forward to seeing Del Toro direct the Mountains of Madness. Jeffrey Combs is the man to go to for Lovecraft, whether as Herbert West, Lovecraft himself or Milton Dammers (a character I would have loved to see make an appearance on X-Files in some fashion), Combs brings the otherworldly and shoves it into your face with a wicked sense of humor.

Siskel & Ebert Hated "I SPIT ON YOUR GRAVE". This of course made it a must-see for me. I kinda liked it. The bathtube castration scene is painful. "I can't get it to stop bleeding." The filmmakers should be sued for bait&switch because the great girl on the movie cover is not in the movie. The heroine is more of a plain jane type. I really would have LOVED the movie if it had the HOT covergirl. No such luck.

THE THING is a great movie. I really liked the romance between the lead guy and girl. The movies dialogue between all the characters is so cool. I believe JAMES ARNESS (the thing) is almost 6'6" tall and shrinks quite well. Lastly, Don't forget to KEEP WATCHING THE SKY.

I ended up pulling Southern Comfort from the line-up. We have so much true-blue horror that I figured I can give Southern Comfort a go during the regular AMAD run. As for MoM, I have no idea how I can connect into it and out of it int he regular AMAD list, so I'll keep it on here in hopes that I pull it and get a chance to watch it here.

When I was younger, in my early teens, I picked up a bargain bin horror flick called REVENGE OF THE DEAD, directed by Pupi Avati. Apparently it's the cut down version of his flick ZEDER. Anyway, I watched it and it was like no experience I'd ever had before.. I was bored to the point of tears, it made zero sense, and was just all-around terrible. Since then I've kept the Pupi Avati list, placing any film worthy of inclusion on to it. Films that I'd rather be shot than watch again. It's a rather short list... that's how bad REVENGE OF THE DEAD was.

As a horror freak it's good to see someone else's take on some of these movies. I try to talk to people about them but it falls on deaf ears. If it's not a guy with a mask or has a number after it, they're not interested. Looking forward to reviews of Squirm, because I love that movie and Mother Of Tears because I loathed it. Can't wait to see what you have to say. And dude, Zombies of Mora Tau...classic! Middleman (the show) referenced that movie and I was like, "Whoa. Someone else has seen this piece of shit?!".

though the schtick at the end worked better as a play - which, of course, it was based on. If you like early home invasion movies, try one of my nobodys-ever-heard-of-it faves, 'Lady in a Cage' - it was, I believe, James Caan's first film appearance and features a really disquieting opening title sequence that was shocking for the early 1960s. (I guess - i wasn't alive) I got Silent Partner after someone made an impassioned plea for it and agree it is a sadly overlooked little gem from the 70s - written by the guy who directed LA Confidential - Elliot Gould as a devious bastard of a bank teller - again not really a horror film - though one death certainly was icky-squicky. - It bears repeating Quint - you're doing a really amazing job with this column. A lot of people out here admire what you're doing.

...that you pulled Southern Comfort from your list, as it's one of the best films that you had listed, and I've seen all but 6 of the films on your master list here. Sure it's not really horror, but then neither are a few of the other candidates. I really hope you get to it once the regular AMAD starts back up, as it's a must see film, as is Hill's massively under appreciated western, The Long Riders, which he made around the same time. As far as horror goes, and given your proclaimed love of 80's horror in particular, four more films that you should consider checking out, if you haven't already seen them that is, are Alone in the Dark - the 80's one with Jack Palance, Martin Landau, Dwight Schultz and Donald Pleasence, directed by Jack "The Hidden" Sholder, which is just pretty much a forgotten gem in my eyes. Tobe Hooper's The Funhouse, which I've always had a particular soft spot for. Pumpkinhead, the original Stan Winston directed film that has both a great creature, great lead performance from Lance Henriksen, and tons of genuine atmosphere courtesy of director Stan Winston (RIP) - too bad the Pumpkinhead name has since been diluted by a host of truly crappy sequels. And finally, if you can get your hands on a copy, The Reflecting Skin, with a pre-fame Viggo Mortensen, in a genuinely different, creepy and atmospheric, but sadly all but forgotten, gem of a flick. A must see if you can find it. And venturing into the 90's, you have seen Nightbreed, the director's cut of Lord of Illusions, and the original Candyman, right?

Awesome movie. Seen it twice on the big screen (thanks Alamo Drafthouse!) and have it on DVD. And the first Pumpkinhead was one of the few movies I had as a child that felt taboo... it wasn't like the horror movies I loved to watch... the Nightmare on Elm Streets, Friday the 13ths, etc... that was for real scary.

Just looked at what you have left -- my advice is put on Mother of Tears, The Sentinel, Road Games or Rabid for Halloween. All are way better than Student Bodies, dude. Hell, I'll look the other way on the "pick from the hat" rules. The movie gods are throwing you a shit hand.
