Let me get this straight, being part Indian is good enough to cast Johnny Depp as Tonto? Talk about disrespecting the character. Can we not find an actual Native American actor to play the role? Depp is about as much indian as I am , and I am 99% Irish German. Yes, I am 1% Indian. And Clooney as the Lone Ranger? Wow, just when you think the Lone Ranger film could be a great, kick ass western you get glamour casting that immediately screams "this is gonna really suck". I don't know about everyone else, but this type of casting makes me think we are gonna get a "Batman and Robin" instead of a "Batman Begins". Not good at all.

But I don't like this casting at all. Suggests a campy, ironic, post modern approach. The Lone Ranger should be earnest, stopping just short of corn. And they should use the recent comic as the template.

I haven't seen it since, literally, 1982, when HBO ran it into the ground. I know I watched it every time it was on, but can barely remember anything about it (I was only 10 at the time). Anyone seen it recently? Is it really as bad as they said it was....?

Predictable? Not really...When I think of the pissed off version of Mal in the Serenity movie, after finding all his friends killed by the Alliance ordering his crew to strap bodies to the ship and whoever doesn't can leave or get shot...THAT is the version of Fillion we need here. ...since Depp stole Timothy Spall's shot at the Mad Hatter, then Spall as the Lone Ranger. Fat, Ugly, bad British teeth - I'd go see that.

Just for the idea of what they could do with scenes of the two of 'em riding into some shithole frontier town and heading straight for the local cathouse - The look on the mdam's face as these two stumble in through the front door - Spall's lumpen gargoyle vs Depp's pretty-boy exotique when the girls start sizin' up the clients - that'd be good for a few laughs.

It's only fair...

Okay, really - Clooney ain't bad. But I'd like to see some sort of brainy elitist-tinged smart aleck in the role - somebody like David Straithairn or....well....somebody LIKE Robert Downey Jr. Not ACTUALLY RDJr, but a too-smart-for-the-room wiseass LIKE Him....Get a sort of inverse Cleavon Little/Sheriff Black Bart kinda vibe goin'....

Although, as long as I''m typing while I think, just the idea of watching Jack Black flop around in that pretty blue pantsuit might be fun for a couple of minutes...

Okay, seriously - So much depends on the intended feel of the movie - are they going for a santized, glossy POTC/FX shitfest, or a grimy Andrew Dominick/John Hillcoat modern Western/revisionist kinda thing?

Hell - Why not Russell Crowe? He likes doing taciturn men-of-honor stuff, he wouldn't be half bad....

So Tonto will be a half-breed outcast, right?

Making him a fair counterpart to the "Lone" Ranger? Depp just wants to ride horses for a few months and sleep-quirk his way through another box office gross percentage. And I'm all for it. The Lone Ranger has been waiting for a faithful and fun screen update. If Clooney won't do it, fuck it, go after Pitt. If not Pitt, I'm sure we can cast an unknown who looks the part and have Patrick Warburton dub him over. I mean, why wouldn't it work?

By Zane Grey is the basis for the Lone Ranger story, and is the story of a young man, who happens to be the fastest draw in Texas, which leads him to have to kill a man and go on the run. Finally, after a foray across the border to a dangerous hole in the wall filled with villains he turns himself into the Texas Ranger hunting him, and rather than hanged the ranger enlists the boy to become a secret agent for the Texas Rangers, undercover in the old west. Now, that's awesome. Johnny Depp and George Clooney simply could not be those characters. Bale couldn't be that character. Matt Damon couldn't be that character. It has to be a kid.

Except that it has nothing to do with the Lone Ranger as presented for the last 65 years. The Ranger is introduced as a young man, but not that young. He is old enough actually to be a Texas Ranger and, depending upon the version of the story, is either a Ranger or an auxiliary drafted by his brother, the Captain of the local Rangers.

So the lone ranger and Tonto are riding through the mountains and they stop for a bathroom brake. The Lone Ranger gets off his horse, drops his pants and begins to squat, when a rattler pops out of the bushes and bites the Lone Ranger square on the ass.

feeling weak the Lone Ranger looks towards Tonto, and asks him to find a doctor in the closest nearby town. Tonto agrees, and rides off. After a few hours, Tonto reaches the closest town and finds the local doctor. Tonto tells the doctor that the Lone Ranger was bit on the ass by a rattler.

The doctor tells Tonto that the only way to remove the poison is to physically suck out the poison from the Lone Rangers ass.
Tonto nods, and recognizes what he must do, and rides off. Tonto finally reaches the Lone Ranger:

"Tonto, my friend...what did the doctor say," the Lone Ranger asks.

Tonto looks at the lone Ranger:"The doctor says you're fucked!"

How about an amalgamation of that young Lone Ranger mini-series and that Lone Ranger film from the 80's(the one with the poorly casted Ranger and bad dubbing). The Ranger "did" Tonto's sister, heh heh! Caviezel would be awesome, or Ben Browder.

and Hugh Jackman was who I came up with. However, I had also considered Nic Cage if they could find the right hair. Also Nic Cage and Johnny Depp were roommates a million years ago I think, so that'd even be cute. But yeah, my actual choice is Hugh Jackman. I also like the Eckhart and Fillion suggestions. The problem is all day when I was thinking about it, I never really felt like there was a perfect choice. It seemed to me that there is no true Lone Ranger type out there right now.

I’d love to see an unhinged Lone Ranger almost consumed with revenge for what Butch Cavendish did to him, his brother and the rest of the Texas Rangers who were tracking them down. Tonto would be the force that keeps him rooted in his own sanity – a touch base to the real world. Oh yeah… good stuff. I’m there opening night, no doubt. I hope that it happens.

I like the idea of Tom Jane playing the Ranger, but they must be aiming A-list for the part if they've already hired Depp as his sidekick -- Depp's marquee appeal will rule the hype; they can't let Tonto steal the movie.

Sheesh... I thought we got over this sort of racist "minstrel"-type casting of whites as minorities several years ago. Heck, they even make sure VOICE ACTORS are the same race as their characters nowadays!

Just based on the fact that they're screwing over some talented Indian actor out there, who would otherwise be getting this plum role, this film is a wash for me. It's like Jessica Alba's Sue Storm all over again! >:(

NEXT time, just hire a damn Native American!!! You already took their lands... you have to take one of the few famous roles made for them, too??? Idiots.

they really should have cast an American Indian for the part. They could have gotten the guy from Flags of Our Fathers, he's pretty good. Unless they change the race of the character, I just don't really dig Depp playing and Indian, and even if they do change the race of the character (a white man raised by Indians or something like that) it's still stealing a role from an American Indian actor.

Clooney and Depp are totally wrong for TLR and Tonto. The 1982 movie stank because the script was crap. Clooney and Depp will screw it up because the'll give it some kind of post modern twist that doesn't fit with the Lone Ranger mythos. Clayton Moore, who played the orgiginal LR back in the '50s-'60s, was about as perfect a LR as you could get. Find an actor like that and you have a winner.
