How can people say "Perfect Casting?"... It's not like Burton would choose a film where he COULDN'T cast Johnny Depp (Or Helena BC, for that matter...) It's not like much thought was put into agonising over who would be "right for the role"...

Now that would've been an actual surprise (and one I wouldn't mind). I thought Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was really bad (Gene Wilder was vastly superior in that role, as was the original film) - Tim Burton (to me at least) is more miss than hit. But then again, my favorite film film of his is Pee Wee's Big Adventure.

I hope this turns out well. The Disney Alice is one of the most haunting movies of my childhood. The scene with the sweeping dog thing always creeped me the hell out. The whole feeling of being alone, Alice is confused by everything around her. And the adults aren't any help cause they're all insane. The crazy characters in that film are creative and cool, but they feel dangerous and threating too. And as a kid I had a fear of strangers, I always was wary of being kidnapped, mustve been all those commercials about not talking to strangers and fliers at school about suspicious vans in the area at three o'clock.

It is a shame, cause I love the guy. he has got some serious acting chops. But man!!!! Seriously, aren't we seeing a little too much of him in these kind of roles? He likes to choose challenging parts. Characters that don't exploit his pretty boy looks, and I commend him for that. But he has dug himself into a hole and chooses nothing but kooky. And Burton really needs to look other actors. Stop being safe!!!!

Certainly good to see you around. Well...I was disappointed. You know, I thought about a lot of shit they would or could fuck up but it didn't occurr to me that within a decade of script-quest they wouldn't be able to think of some Indy-worthy set-pieces and basically manage to kill Indy off in the second half of the movie. Even huge amounts of some of the magic stuff (Apfelwein) couldn't wash down the bad impressions. It is what it is. There certainly were things in it, that I enjoyed, though. What did you think?

Alas, I felt similarly, AllieJamison. I was trying my hardest to stop myself from doing doubletakes in the darkened theater at what I saw on-screen. Especially in the first 15-20 minutes. And I felt pretty let down by the underuse/under-written role for Marion. I don't know if Karen Allen was just so thrilled to be reunited with the Indy crew or what, but this was not much of the Marion we saw in Raiders. I suppose Ms.Ravenwood must have mellowed over the years and after having a kid. I never really dug the aliens part, but got over it in hope it'd come out ok (I mean, people probably felt similar about the Ark of the Covenant before Raiders), but in this case it just felt incredibly contrived and like that or didn't really cover any novel ground, or at least do it in an engrossing, novel way.

I found myself questioning why the characters were doing certain things a lot of the time. It just felt like everyone was going through the motions for the sake of making another Indy movie and wasn't worried about how well the story held together or even made sense.

it felt like "Diet Indy" compared to the red-canned boldness of "Indy-cola Classic" (Raiders). That was how I felt about it when I walked out of the theatre. I wanted to see it again. Without all the release hype, without my expectations, and just watch it. See if I could enjoy it after some time had passed, but I never got back to the theatre again for it. Still want to, though. I've since been trying to read post-release stuff from the filmakers to help illuminate the reasons for why they went with the story and details they chose, etc. And I just keep finding the stuff over and over: they made it for "the fans"; they made it "for fun"; Lucas finally wore everyone down and beat them into submission about doing the aliens thing. But no real explanations about why things had to happen the way they did in the film. I read the big-ass Complete Making of Indiana Jones book that recently came out (fascinating details on the original films) and for as much detail as they go into on a film made 27 years ago, there's comparatively little thought revealed on Crystal Skull except that people wanted to make another Indy and that's it.

so, crap in, crap out I guess. That was pretty long-winded of me.

all the negative stuff aside, I did really enjoy seeing Indy on-screen again doing some Indy-like stuff. Shia wasn't the bane of the film. And there were some fun, enlongated chase/fight scenes. I just have a lot of unanswered questions about things in the movie that I hope to iron out with future viewings.

Yes including the dour, well art directed but passionlessly directed and acted over-all Sweeney Todd. The last thing I need to see is Depp team up with Burton again. Their last two outings have been as straight down the middle and boring as it could possibly get. It's safe to say at this point that Burton has completely lost it. His latter films are mere poseurs devoid of any real wonder compared to his earlier work.

I agree with each one of your points, finky. Marion, Ford's weird delivery of lines in front of the warehouse and then there's Mac's legs, "the skull told me this and that", even John Williams recycling Last Crusade's theme when the film is already at a low ...and so much more. And I'm still asking the same questions you hinted at. I also can't help but think of this film as a huge misunderstanding. Does Spielberg really think he did well? Er, yeah...I've been bad about posting for a while. Work's kept me begging for daily doses of the Apfelwein it's been so damn busy. Anyone that tells you Fannie Mae or Freddie Mac is in danger doesn't work in the multifamily mortgage industry!

but I digress :)

all your points are dead on. I really felt underwhelmed by William's score, too. I didn't really like the continum keyboard effect, though I think it kind of fits for a sci-fi film, but not an Indy film. The parts I ended up liking a lot were often the recycled pieces from earlier Indy films. Which is too bad. But I felt somewhat similarly when the SW prequels first came out and over time, much of the "new" music grew on me, some of it a lot more than I ever expected. Maybe in three years I'll feel the same way about Crystal Skull's score.

Depp as Lone Ranger, huh? I guess we'll see how that turns out. I don't think a fey Ranger is necessarily the best way to go with it, but it seemed to be okay for Pirates. Then again, it's already been done with Pirates.

Depp doesn't strike me as a guy who feels he is qualified to fill these roles, but rather as a kid who can't wait to play dress up. And I don't blame him for that one bit. I'm not againt a new Lone Ranger. He's a pretty positive character, and it could be fun. Don't know about Depp in the role, but it could be worse. The guy at least knows how to have fun with a role.

Westerns are a hard sell unless more adult themed in general now a days..I for one love a good western but the days of public consumption of western comedies may be gone..

Even though Lloyd was in the tv alice, he'd make a great older, stoner caterpillar. And of course Burton will make the queen of hearts a transvestite, and he should. Alan Cumming? Crispin Glover? They both have to be something in this movie.

IMDB says Alice has been cast and it's Mia Wasikowska. Can't say I've seen here in anything.

But then he was reportedly a sour-puss when it came to adaptations of his work so no surprises there. Seriously, what did other people want from that flik?

Wasn't horrible, just a pale pale imitation of the original movie...it really was not any different then the first movie except that it did not have the charisma of Gene Wilder and the great music. I think that Chris Walken would have been the better choice for the role...a rare bad performance by Depp-he was just creepy (not in a good way) and weird - not a good protaganist.

Hoping this scene is all sorts of fucked up- Like the Dinner Scene in the original 1974 Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Since gore could be an issue- You cut away to shadows on the wall when the clam killings begin. Hearing them scream for help, watching their shadow silhouettes being ripped apart with black goo splattering onto the walls, as the Walrus tears them out of their shells and devours them. A nice messy close up of the clam guts dangling from his Mustache when the Carpenter comes back out ready to eat..

Oh please make this scene terrifyingly bliss, a true child giving nightmare!

I agree, I like Burton's last couple over Spielberg's last couple, as well as Lucas, M. I haven't enjoyed Spielberg's, Zemeckis, Night, last few films at all, and I've only liked one Lucas directed movie, and that was from 1977.

OK, this is just me, but I adored the role he played in DONNIE BRASCO. He was amazing in that film. But somehow, he has decided not to revisit that sort of role (NB bar his role in the new Michael Mann, which I think I'll like) and do - to my mind - rather too many of those 'child-like' characters. Now, when he does them with sensitivity - like Edward Scissorhands, or William Blake in Dead Man - it's wonderful. But enough with the Willy Wonka/Captain Jack shit. Please, enough! DEPP, YOU ARE A VERY TALENTED MAN! USE THAT TALENT!!!

Ok cool, I had the exact connection wrong between Green Hornet and Lone Ranger...but I do think its fascinating how concepts come around again(same way Indiana Jones and a Batman vs. Joker movie resurfaced after 19 years) Somewhere the creator of Green Hornet and Lone Ranger (George W. Trendle and Fran Striker) are smiling. Unfortunately two different companies have the rights here, so you can't really get away with a little reference...although here's an idea..cast SETH ROGEN AS LONE RANGER...he'd effectively be playing how own uncle (which I'm pretty sure how it was done on the old Radio Shows-same actor)

Depp's Tonto
by Forsakyn
Sep 25th, 2008
11:38:39 AM
According to the voices in my head, Depp is doing his interpretation of Tonto... In Depp's interpretation, Tonto is actually a Caucasian who thinks he's Indian, and was raised by wolves (that partied a lot) near some indians. He designed his own indian costume from thrown away garments, and while it comes across as rather patchy and effeminate, it's Depp's spiked hair that really sells his version of Tonto. He also has an unusual walk as it's part-wolf and part-human - some might think it looks gay, but they're just homophobic! Finally, he has an addiction to fire water, but this is mostly played for laughs (and tastefully done) as to not offend any Indian viewers. Did I mention his Tonto also slurs his delivery when speaking?

I think it's awesome that Burton is not "above" making movies for his alma mater, Disney. In the early years of his career, there seemed to be a discord between his artisitic sensibilities and Disney's, so he left. Later, his NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS was a big hit for Disney, but it by no means signalled a long-term collaboration. Now, it looks like he's back in the Disney fold. I guess he trusts his vision to work anywhere, and he doesn't care about being perceived as selling out. Can't wait for ALICE.

Sep 25th, 2008
02:17:34 PM
One: It's sad to see the day when Johnny Depp and Tim Burton--previously two of Hollywood's most unconventional and interesting artists--have become utterly predictable.

Two: I'm noting all the "Paul Ruebens would be the best Mad Hatter evah!" comments, and find them just as quixotic and groundless as the claims that Crispin Glover would have made the perfect Joker or Willy Wonka.

Three: I knew it was coming, but the Lone Ranger movie is going to be damn near impossible to make convincing. Pirates are easy, people like Pirates; but cowboys haven't been cool since the early sixties. Good luck, Disney.
