The first time I saw the trailer I was like "Well that just fucking Julianne Moore." Then I realized that Moss was in Disturbia so it could possibly be her as well. I hate it when I recognize the "voice" that is the bad guy on the line in the trailer. Like when I knew that Leland Orser was the killer in the Bone Collector or Joseph Cross in Untraceable.

Will Spielberg get sued for this one too?
by I Dunno

First he gets sued for The Island, a blatant ripoff of that MST3K movie, then the Rear Window people sued him for Disturbia and now I keep hearing this movie being compared to North By Northwest. Of course, you can't sue Steven Spielberg, I imagine he has command over the Jewish god of lawsuits but buy an original script once in a while already.
Yep, this solidifies how terrible this will be.

It showed its cards WAY too early -- I knew who the villain was going to be, and they shouldn't have given him typical end-of-movie 'superpowers'.* (He didn't have real superpowers of course, but the way the ending was framed and the things he did sure SEEMED like it.)

But I didn't like Disturbia either. This is a check your brain at the door action movie. I hoped I was going to like this, because this is the guy that wants to bring "Y The Last Man" to the screen. At this point I think the odds of him pulling that off are slim to none. I'll be surprised if other reviewers are as kind to Eagle Eye as Harry..

was Rear Window updated with modern technology (cell phones, ankle braclets, etc.), this looks to be the "wrong-man-accused" plot with modern technology. The trailer makes it appear to take the office scene in the Matrix, and expand it to feature length. I will see it this weekend though, thanks to free movie cash stickers on "specially marked boxes" of on-sale DVDs.

Anyway, nice review. I can't wait to see EAGLE EYE. This Autumn looks very promising IMO, we've got FROST/NIXON, QUANTUM OF SOLACE, BENJAMIN BUTTON, THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL, THE TIME TRAVELER'S WIFE, VALKYRIE, THE ROAD, MAX PAYNE, AUSTRALIA and W! Looks very promising.

Then prepare for a North by Northwest lawsuit! Although that may be a bit of a harder sell, since some consider North by Northwest to basically be an unofficial remake of The 39 Steps. But Disturbia = Rear Window is painfully obvious. DJ Caruso is no Hitchcock and Shia LaBeouf is no Jimmy Stewart / Cary Grant.

So the fact that she is in no Promos makes me believe she is the voice. What a stupid mystery. Ooooh what celebrity is the voice? That's not a how a movie should be structured, a secret that has more to do with the person being a C-List celebrity just shy of tvland versus WHY? is this person doing it. Seems overshadowed. The great acting, tight directing and the frenetic pace had me won over for the entire film. I even shooed away that little voice in my head that was saying "hey, how come everything electronic works perfectly and no one in this film ever has to call tech support?" What ruined the film for me was the tacked on Hollywood ending. Way to chicken out, Spielberg! Lame! So totally wimpy and lame. Here you had a character we'd all invested in make a crucial sacrifice only to resurrect him like a gumby doll and have him kiss the girl at the end. Stupid. This film was never about the two leads hooking up. Never. That ending came out of nowhere and simply does not fit. The director can NOT be happy about this. I hope they let him do a director's cut someday.

What do people think? Someone mentioned above that they hope a director's cut is done of Eagle Eye to improve the ending. Is it just me who thinks that the original theatrical version is the story told, and any changes released after just don't feel right. Like, which version of I Am Legend is the real one? Or Bladerunner? Wasn't Obiwan Luke's father in one version of Empire? Where do other people draw the line?

People say things like Shia Lebouf should have stayed out of Indy IV. Right. Who in their right mind would say "no?" I'm not going to blame him for that. He gave it his all in the material that was given to him. I'd sooner blame Lucas, Koepp and Spielberg. Spielberg because of his massive hard on for the kid which clearly clouds his judgement, Lucas because he is creatively bankrupt, and Koepp because of the ending. Collectively they should have tailored the role more to Shia's personality. You can't fit square pegs into round holes.

Spot on. Shia LeBeouf is the easy target, mostly because of what was given to him. George Lucas is certifiably insane, Koepp was trying to piece together five or so different scripts a la Frankenstein, and Spielberg just became everyone's bitch.

---SPOILER Warning--- It reminded me of Enemy of the State meets 2001 and Wargames. It was ok, but they could've cut the entire "Circuit City" scene as it destroyed the mystique of the film for me. It turned the film from a running around taking orders from a female Morpheus on a cell phone a la Matrix into every cliché machine vs. humanity film since 2001, Terminator, Wargames, and Matrix. Seriously, did the computer have to take a moment aside in Circuit City to explain itself to two people it intended to off in the end -- didn't fit into the rest of its logical actions. In fact that scene made the computer seem more humanly out of character. There was no reason for it to explain itself to them and it would've kept the tension high until the very end when they walk into the room to see that its a computer. It still would've been cliché, but at least more of a surprise at the end than giving it away half way through.

I liked it. Didn't blow me away, but it was worth the cost of admission. Some of the action scenes were shot with the camera way too close to the action ("Transformers" had this problem, too), and there were a couple plot points that seemed a little weak, but nothing killed it for me. The epilogue after the climax, though, was totally unnecessary. I won't spoil anything, but I don't see anybody disagreeing with me on that point once they see it.

The first third? Very interesting and entertaining....after we realize who/what is calling all these shots...it becomes absolutely refriggindiculous. I mean, just beyond belief stupidity...I was bored to the point of lunacy for the rest of the utterly predictable plot=unfolding....Totally unoriginal idea, with a totally unoriginal "villain"...just terrible... I blame Lucas. LUCAS OUT OF IRAQ NOW!!!!

This is the most disappointing movie I've seen in a theater this year. I'm stunned by Harry's positive review. Avoid this crapfest. Stay home and clip your toenails instead. It will be more entertaining.

is the cunt then. So now I can't even read a thread before a flick officially comes out for even a day. Oh and this is the net, btw. Some people live outside the supposed only country that matters. Do you arseholes have a brain spasm where your self-importance makes you forget there's a fucking world outside? And makes you forget spoiler warnings because you're so fucking desperate/starved for attention? Thanks.
How could you possibly enjoy this movie?

I thought it was damn near unwatchable. I love the cast, but they were reduced to flavorless mannequins in this movie. The action was badly done. The way the lamely ludicrous story was handled was lazy, unconvincing and overwrought in almost every way. It was bland, generic and monotonous. The score was terrible in a very noticeable way. Then it wants to pull your heart strings too. Ugh. I really dug Disturbia but this movie made me want to walk out on more than one occasion. That's rare. It was insulting, mind numbing and boring. What a wonderful combination.

Since when are movies supposed to make sense? If it made sense it would be called "reality". But, easily 75-80% of the movie made sense. Don't listen to the critics they think they know everything. SPOILER --> One would be surprised what a computer cold do when in control (AI).

Obviously fucks like you guys are contributing to the 'opening weekend' every bit as much as the marketing goons.

I meant the whole bullshit phenomena where you "must" see it the first few days/the pathetic sleight-of-hand where people are fooled into giving the film all it's money before word-of-mouth gets out and they realise it's crap.

Although obviously "word-of-mouth" at AICN now means giving away the ending 5 minutes after the film has opened. Goodbye.

This was fucking terrible!

I was intrigued by all the trailers and really wanted to love this thing. Plus I really enjoyed Shia's and Caruso's work on Disturbia enough to be one of the folks who was looking forward to seeing them take the reins on Y The Last Man, one of favorite pieces of fiction of the past five years.

But yeesh. If this is their version of a big studio pic, you can count me as one of the folks who want them off of Y, stat. This was a political/techno thriller with no smarts, ingenuity, or tension. Instead of gradually turning the up knob on the suspense and mystery before giving us a payoff as most films would, we just got a series of incoherent explosions strung together with plot threads that were simultaneously cliched but incomprehensible. It was a movie where things just seemed to randomly happen. First some cars get smashed, then a crane rips them in half, then some lab is blowing up crystals, then some guy gets exploded by power lines, etc.

At least it was punctuated by an ending so heinous and reeking of 'studio intervention' that it made the whole theater laugh and shake their heads.

I never ranted like this before, but that is just how freaking shocked I am with how this thing turned out.

It got applause from the crowd at the end of the film. The ending was a bit hoaky in that I can guarantee you 100% that Lebeouf would not have survived doing what he did, much less get in a position to be able to do it. Thats just fact. Other than that though it was grand. For those complaining that the previews and what not feel a tad bit 'ripped off' from the Matrix? THATS FOR A REASON DUMBASS. Use thy brain! As per the North By Northwest comparison... gee.. ya think there is a reason William Sadler played with the biplane when he was talking to Lebeouf early on in the film? They knew what they were making, were confident in doing so, and absolutely planted this one in the deep seats. Go see it and decide for yourselves.

The ending almost ruined it , if you just take walk out of the movie when they flashback to the twins when they were little then it is an amazing popcorn film, an 8 out of 10 as far as popcorn films go but with that stupid ending I have to take off a point.

It was a poor mash-up of 2001, Wargames, Enemy of the State and I,Robot. So many plot holes and blatant mistakes. It was entirely implausible being placed in January of next year, the week after the inauguration. Chances are the new chain of command wouldn't even be decided, and there won't even be a fraking state of the union, there never is after a new inauguration, it would be an 'administration goals' speech. And 'hex' being a sound triggered explosive? At high F, during 'land of the freeeeeeee?' Get the frak out of here. Steal this movie, don't see it in theaters, don't encourage them to make more shite like this.

This really wasn't very good. It was completely inane. How can a movie that wants to use technology, and the concept of big brother in today's paranoia-saturated culture, be effective when it turns ridiculous so fast? Billy Bob's fate? Terrible. The ending, with Shia suddenly dressed in the uniform? Awful. Its hard when the antagonist has zero personality. This just doesn't work unless it can be semi-realistic and the reality this film is grounded in isn't realistic. Yea, I believe in suspension of disbelief - for a far superior example of this type of flick, watch Enemy of the State.
You guys seem to miss the point...

Its a SF movie, morons. As SF, it gets a pass on the Realistic-ness of the Big Idea its trying to examine. Its no different then WarGames taking liberties in showing that all our Nuclear Missles were put under control of One Computer. Was it even technologically realistic(WOPR itself wasn't even a realistic technological possibility for the time) or politically plausible? No. But people ran with it and its referred to as a Cautionary Tale. Here is what can happen if you go down this road. And yes... I can easily see the government thinking that one big computer system to accumulate, collate, and provide analysis of all the information in the world in order to combat terrorism would be a Good Idea. Well.. HERE IS WHY IT ISN'T. If you don't grasp these fundamental facts.. go back to watching Modern Marvels and How Its Made. Thats more up your alley. Just wondering.. when you guys were kids.. did you imagine you'd grow up to be the two old hecklers from The Muppet Show? Was that your goal in life? And btw... Sebrilazen.. you forgot Colossus: The Forbin Project. If you have ever even seen it that is. How technologically plausible was that? This movie is going to find a good life on DVD in combination with its solid opening and box office.

Wargames creates a subculture. A world of war-rooms, blinking monitors and digital text filing across the screen. It went a long way to creating THAT reality. The one where its movie takes place. Then its earned the right to have a talking computer trying to understand the futility of playing a game that can't be won - that's intelligent. That ask hard questions about technologies place in the world and the dangers of developing beyond our control or its own. Eagle Eye develops none of that. Sure, it tries to create a modern reality where BIG BROTHER has his eye on everything - that's creepy. Like Enemy of the State. But then it ruins that with the awful twist of making HAL's fucked-up sister the villain. In no way is it hinted at that a computer is controlling this reality. Its introduced, as a device. In Wargames, its not just a device, it is the main conflict. In Eagle Eye its an excuse for some truly stupid action sequences that are barely discernible. Point is: For a movie like this to be credible, to work - it has to make the reality in which it exists, that it hopes to manipulate - plausible. Thats not the case here. The better story would have been to wax the twin brother concept. And just stick with the military programmer struggling with an all-knowing computer designed to run the country in the case of meltdown. There's tension there.

If the movie wanted to be a comic book - it should establish those sensibilities. Like The Matrix. It is clearly inspired by the ordinary guy becoming a fantastical hero. Eagle Eye doesn't have that. It's all grey and opens with an action sequence striking close to reality. Then, as it unfolds, it doesn't adhere to the rules it laid out initially. If it wanted to be transformers, the matrix, then it should have stated so at the outset. If it wanted to be Enemy of the State meets North By Northwest, then it should have found a better way to combine the two.
Why support this crap?

What happened Harry? Why can't you recognize shit anymore when you see it? This movie is garbage, it will be forgotten quickly, it is a waste of time, and Shia Leboeuf is a deusche bag. Transformers was unwatchable, Indiana Jones was a travesty, and I never saw Disturbia and wont watch this. Don't praise this garbage, please its okay that it exists, but dont sit there encouraging it. I love this site and dont want to have to rationalize why I keep coming back.

WarGames didn't *create* the hacker subculture. It certainly was nice PR to middle america but hacking had been going on since at least the mid-to-late 70's.

As per 'In no way is it hinted at that a computer is controlling this reality.'... flat wrong. Just because YOU weren't bright enough to pick up on the clues didn't mean they were there. The allusion to the Matrix when he was picked up should have been your first clue, the second should have been how fast this person was breaking into systems, the third and final clue should have been giving exact speeds to drive at to miss impacts and the controlling of cranes precise enough to hit the cops and not them. The clues were there, you just overlooked them. I won't fault you for missing them during the movie, but not realizing them AFTER the movie places is just WTF. Public School? Or maybe you're still there.

DJ Caruso is just like bad sex. The only memorable thing about Salton Sea is Vincent Donofrio. The only memorable thing about Disturbia is whatever that hot chick's name is. And the only memorable thing about Eagle Eye is going to be that for about 30 seconds I thought it was going to have a ballsy ending. Oh, I almost forgot that the same no talent hacks who wrote Transformers/Fringe produced this so I am increasingly afraid for Star Trek as well.

I thought the ending was kind of cool.. and then they had that thing attached at the end where Shia is accepting a medal. That was the breaking point for me. That would have redeemed the whole thing- both brothers dying to keep the country safe. But no.. couldn't do that.
